This paper uses both the non-parametric method of data envelopment analysis (DEA) and the econometric method of stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) to study the production technology and cost efficiency of the US dental care industry using practice level data. The American Dental Association 2006 survey data for a number of general dental practices in the state of Colorado in the US are used for the empirical analysis. The findings suggest that the cost efficiency score is between 0.79 and 0.87, on average, and the cost inefficiency is mostly due to allocative rather than technical inefficiency. The optimal output level for a dental practice to fully exploit the economies of scale is estimated to be at $1.68 million. Average cost at this level of output is 50.6 cents for each dollar of gross billing generated. The DEA and SFA approaches provide generally consistent results.  相似文献

Using data envelopment analysis (DEA) in conjunction with stochastic frontier analysis (SFA), the aim of this study was to measure the relative efficiency of quality management (QM) practices in Turkish public and private universities. Based on the extant literature, a set of nine critical QM factors and seven performance indicators for Turkish universities were identified as input and output variables, respectively. SFA confirmed the existence of significant relationships between QM factors and performance indicators. DEA findings indicated that private universities with higher levels of QM efficiency on stakeholder-focus indicators achieved better performance in terms of fulfilling the expectations of their stakeholders. In contrast, public universities were more successful in managing QM practices for a superior teaching and research performance. Finally, after eliminating the managerial discrepancies, no significant structural efficiency difference was found between these two groups of universities through stakeholder-focus model, though some significant variation was noted in both factor-efficiency and total-efficiency models. As for total-efficiency model, we may infer that the structural differences found in favour of public universities for factor-efficiencies are counterbalanced by private universities which tend to focus more on their stakeholders in managing QM applications.  相似文献

This paper uses a mechanistic frontier approach as a reference to evaluate the ability of conventional parametric (SFA) and non-parametric (DEA) frontier approaches for analyzing economic–environmental trade-offs. Conventional frontier approaches are environmentally adjusted through incorporating the materials balance principle. The analysis is worked out for the Flemish pig finishing case, which is both representative and didactic. Results show that, on average, SFA and DEA yield adequate economic–environmental trade-offs. Both methods are good estimators for technical efficiency. Cost allocative and environmental allocative efficiency scores are less robust, due to the well-known methodological advantages and disadvantages of SFA and DEA. For particular firms, SFA, DEA and the mechanistic approach may yield different economic–environmental trade-offs. One has therefore to be careful when using conventional frontier approaches for firm-specific decision support. The mechanistic approach allows for optimizing performances per average present finisher, which is the production unit in pig finishing. Conventional frontier methods do not allow for this optimization since the number of average present finishers varies along the production functions. Since the mechanistic production function is based on underlying growth, feed uptake and mortality functions, additional firm-specific indicators can also be calculated at each point of the production function.  相似文献

Quantile regression for robust bank efficiency score estimation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We discuss quantile regression techniques as a robust and easy to implement alternative for estimating Farell technical efficiency scores. The quantile regression approach estimates the production process for benchmark banks located at top conditional quantiles. Monte Carlo simulations reveal that even when generating data according to the assumptions of the stochastic frontier model (SFA), efficiency estimates obtained from quantile regressions resemble SFA-efficiency estimates. We apply the SFA and the quantile regression approach to German bank data for three banking groups, commercial banks, savings banks and cooperative banks to estimate efficiency scores based on a simple value added function and a multiple-input–multiple-output cost function. The results reveal that the efficient (benchmark) banks have production and cost elasticities which differ considerably from elasticities obtained from conditional mean functions and stochastic frontier functions.  相似文献

Performance-based budgeting has received increasing attention from public and for-profit organizations in an effort to achieve a fair and balanced allocation of funds among their individual producers or operating units for overall system optimization. Although existing frontier estimation models can be used to measure and rank the performance of each producer, few studies have addressed how the mismeasurement by frontier estimation models affects the budget allocation and system performance. There is therefore a need for analysis of the accuracy of performance assessments in performance-based budgeting. This paper reports the results of a Monte Carlo analysis in which measurement errors are introduced and the system throughput in various experimental scenarios is compared. Each scenario assumes a different multi-period budgeting strategy and production frontier estimation model; the frontier estimation models considered are stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) and data envelopment analysis (DEA). The main results are as follows: (1) the selection of a proper budgeting strategy and benchmark model can lead to substantial improvement in the system throughput; (2) a “peanut butter” strategy outperforms a discriminative strategy in the presence of relatively high measurement errors, but a discriminative strategy is preferred for small measurement errors; (3) frontier estimation models outperform models with randomly-generated ranks even in cases with relatively high measurement errors; (4) SFA outperforms DEA for small measurement errors, but DEA becomes increasingly favorable relative to SFA as the measurement errors increase.  相似文献

Multiple imputation (MI) methods have been widely applied in economic applications as a robust statistical way to incorporate data where some observations have missing values for some variables. However in stochastic frontier analysis (SFA), application of these techniques has been sparse and the case for such models has not received attention in the appropriate academic literature. This paper fills this gap and explores the robust properties of MI within the stochastic frontier context. From a methodological perspective, we depart from the standard MI literature by demonstrating, conceptually and through simulation, that it is not appropriate to use imputations of the dependent variable within the SFA modelling, although they can be useful to predict the values of missing explanatory variables. Fundamentally, this is because efficiency analysis involves decomposing a residual into noise and inefficiency and as a result any imputation of a dependent variable would be imputing efficiency based on some concept of average inefficiency in the sample. A further contribution that we discuss and illustrate for the first time in the SFA literature, is that using auxiliary variables (outside of those contained in the SFA model) can enhance the imputations of missing values. Our empirical example neatly articulates that often the source of missing data is only a sub-set of components comprising a part of a composite (or complex) measure and that the other parts that are observed are very useful in predicting the value.  相似文献

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is widely used to estimate the efficiency of firms and has also been proposed as a tool to measure technical capacity and capacity utilization (CU). Random variation in output data can lead to downward bias in DEA estimates of efficiency and, consequently, upward bias in estimates of technical capacity. This can be particularly problematic for industries such as agriculture, aquaculture and fisheries where the production process is inherently stochastic due to environmental influences. This research uses Monte Carlo simulations to investigate possible biases in DEA estimates of technically efficient output and capacity output attributable to noisy data and investigates the impact of using a model specification that allows for variable returns to scale (VRS). We demonstrate a simple method of reducing noise induced bias when panel data is available. We find that DEA capacity estimates are highly sensitive to noise and model specification. Analogous conclusions can be drawn regarding DEA estimates of average efficiency.  相似文献

A Monte Carlo study is conducted to compare the stochastic frontier method and the data envelopment analysis (DEA) method in measuring efficiency in situations where firms are subject to the effects of factors which are beyond managerial control. In making efficiency measurements and comparisons, one must separate the effects of the environment (the exogenous factors) and the effects of the productive efficiency. There are two basic approaches to account for the effects of exogenous variables: (1) an one-step procedure which includes the exogenous variables directly in estimating the efficiency measures, and (2) a two-step procedure which first estimates the relative ‘gross’ efficiencies using inputs and outputs, then analyzes the effects of the exogenous variables on the ‘gross’ efficiency. The results show that the magnitude of exogenous variables does not appear to have any significant effect on the performance of the one-step stochastic frontier method as long as the exogenous variables are correctly identified and accounted for. However, the effects of exogenous variables are significant for the two-step approach, especially for the DEA methods.  相似文献

In data envelopment analysis (DEA) an inefficient unit can be projected onto an efficient target that is far away, i.e. reaching the target may demand large reductions in inputs and increases in outputs. When the inputs and outputs modifications planned are large, it may be troublesome to carry them out all at once. In order to help an inefficient unit reach a distant target, a strategy of gradual improvements with successive, intermediate targets has been proposed. This paper extends such approach to the variable returns to scale (VRS) case. In the VRS scenario we distinguish between units that are technical efficient and those that are not. On the one hand, for those units that are not technical efficient the proposed approach determines successive intermediate targets leading to the technical efficiency frontier, i.e. the priority for those units is to attain technical efficiency. On the other hand, for those units that are technical efficient but not scale efficient the proposed approach computes a sequence of targets ending in the global efficiency frontier, i.e. when technical efficiency is guaranteed the goal is then to attain global efficiency. In both cases, the successive targets are obtained by iteratively solving specific DEA models that take into account given bounds on the rates of change in inputs and outputs that the unit can implement in each step.  相似文献

The variable returns to scale data envelopment analysis (DEA) model is developed with a maintained hypothesis of convexity in input–output space. This hypothesis is not consistent with standard microeconomic production theory that posits an S-shape for the production frontier, i.e. for production technologies that obey the Regular Ultra Passum Law. Consequently, measures of technical efficiency assuming convexity are biased downward. In this paper, we provide a more general DEA model that allows the S-shape.  相似文献

This paper develops a DEA (data envelopment analysis) model to accommodate competition over outputs. In the proposed model, the total output of all decision making units (DMUs) is fixed, and DMUs compete with each other to maximize their self-rated DEA efficiency score. In the presence of competition over outputs, the best-practice frontier deviates from the classical DEA frontier. We also compute the efficiency scores using the proposed fixed sum output DEA (FSODEA) models, and discuss the competition strategy selection rule. The model is illustrated using a hypothetical data set under the constant returns to scale assumption and medal data from the 2000 Sydney Olympics under the variable returns to scale assumption.  相似文献

The purpose of conventional Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is to evaluate the performance of a set of firms or Decision-Making Units using deterministic input and output data. However, the input and output data in the real-life performance evaluation problems are often stochastic. The stochastic input and output data in DEA can be represented with random variables. Several methods have been proposed to deal with the random input and output data in DEA. In this paper, we propose a new chance-constrained DEA model with birandom input and output data. A super-efficiency model with birandom constraints is formulated and a non-linear deterministic equivalent model is obtained to solve the super-efficiency model. The non-linear model is converted into a model with quadratic constraints to solve the non-linear deterministic model. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis is performed to assess the robustness of the proposed super-efficiency model. Finally, two numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed chance-constrained DEA model and sensitivity analysis.  相似文献

An ellipsoidal frontier model: Allocating input via parametric DEA   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper presents the ellipsoidal frontier model (EFM), a parametric data envelopment analysis (DEA) model for input allocation. EFM addresses the problem of distributing a single total fixed input by assuming the existence of a predefined locus of points that characterizes the DEA frontier. Numeric examples included in the paper show EFM’s capacity to allocate shares of the total fixed input to each DMU so that they will all become efficient. By varying the eccentricities, input distribution can be performed in infinite ways, gaining control over DEA weights assigned to the variables in the model. We also show that EFM assures strong efficiency and behaves coherently within the context of sensitivity analysis, two properties that are not observed in other models found in the technical literature.  相似文献

This study surveys the increasing research field of performance measurement by making use of a bibliometric literature analysis. We concentrate on two approaches, namely Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) as the most important methods to evaluate the efficiency of individual and organizational performance. It is the first literature survey that analyses DEA and SFA publications jointly, covering contributions published in journals, indexed by the Web of Science database from 1978 to 2012. Our aim is to identify seminal papers, playing a major role in DEA and SFA development and to determine areas of adoption. We recognized a constant growth of publications during the years identifying DEA as a standard technique in Operations Research, whereas SFA is mainly adopted in Economic research fields. Making use of document co-citation analysis we identify Airports and Supplier Selection (DEA) as well as Banking and Agriculture (SFA) as most influential application areas. Furthermore, Sensitivity and Fuzzy Set Theory (DEA) as well as Bayesian Analysis and Heterogeneity (SFA) are found to be most influential research areas and seem to be methodological trends. By developing an adoption rate of knowledge we identify that research, in terms of citations, is more focusing on relatively old and recent research at the expenses of middle-aged contributions, which is a typical phenomenon of a fast developing discipline.  相似文献

Despite the fact that Taiwan’s high-tech industry has gradually secured a leading position in the world, enterprises in Taiwan have striven to strengthen their technical advancement by providing employees with various internal or external training programmes. These institutional training programmes are designed to sustain competitive advantage, enhance the quality of manpower and improve operational efficiency. Much literature assesses the efficiency of an internal training programme that is initiated by a firm, but only a little literature studies the efficiency of an external training programme that is led by a government. Various efficiency measurement tools, such as conventional statistical methods and non-parametric methods, have been successfully developed in the literature. Among these tools, the data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach is one of the most widely discussed. However, the DEA's capability to discriminate efficient decision-making units from inefficient decision-making units requires much improvement (Adler and Yazhemsky). In this paper, a two-stage approach of integrating spatiotemporal independent component analysis (stICA) and DEA is developed for efficiency measurement. stICA is used to search for latent source signals where no relevant signal mixture mechanisms are available; and DEA is used to measure the relative efficiencies of decision-making units (DMUs). We suggest using stICA first to extract the input variables for generating independent components (IC), then selecting the ICs representing the independent sources of input variables, and finally inputting the selected ICs as new variables in the DEA model. To find the effects of environmental variables on the estimated efficiency scores, the Tobit–Bayes (censored) regression is applied. A simulated dataset and the training institution dataset provided by the Semiconductor Institute in Taiwan is used for analysis. The empirical result shows that the proposed method can not only separate performance differences between the training institutions but also improve the discriminatory capability of the DEA's efficiency measurement. The study results can serve as a reference for training institutions wishing to enhance their training efficiency.  相似文献

This study uses slacks-based data envelopment analysis (DEA) to examine the performance of electricity distribution districts (EDDs) in Taiwan in 2004. It also explores the relationship between a knowledge management system (KMS) and variations in the efficiency of EDDs in the Taiwan Power Company from 2000 to 2004. The findings show that the EDDs performed well in terms of managerial efficiency in 2004, and 75% of the districts exhibited an increasing performance variation when using cross-period analysis for that period. We show that there is a positive relationship between a KMS and variations in organizational efficiency. In addition, we present a decision-making matrix and conceptual map to help EDD managers improve their managerial efficiency and skills. This study contributes to the field of knowledge management research by applying the DEA model to link the performance between KMS and an organization. Several significant findings emerge from the study.  相似文献

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a methodology extensively applied to measuring the relative efficiency of decision making units with multiple inputs and multiple outputs. Herein, a DEA model is developed to measure the efficiency of forest districts which are divided into a number of subdistricts called working circles (WCs). The idea is to construct district production frontiers from the WCs of individual districts. Superimposing the district production frontiers of different districts one derives the forest production frontier. The closeness of a district production frontier to the forest production frontier indicates this district's efficiency. As an illustration, the developed model measures the eight districts, with a total of thirty-four WCs, of the national forests of the Republic of China on Taiwan. The results provide the top management with an idea of how far each district can be expected to improve its performance when compared with other districts.  相似文献

The usual Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model for measuring the relative efficiency assumes that all plants belong to distinct firms superior to them. For firms with more than one plant, Koopmans proposes a procedure for deriving the short-run production frontier for each firm. Modifying his idea, a DEA model is constructed in this paper for measuring the short-run efficiency of each plant within a firm. Based on the theory of production economics that the long-run production frontier is an envelop super-imposed upon all short-run production frontiers, another DEA model is constructed to measure the long-run efficiency of every plant. The long-run efficiency is always smaller than or equal to the short-run efficiency. Consequently, it is possible that an inefficient plant can only be improved in the long-run. With the models constructed in this paper, a decision-maker is able to distinguish between what can be achieved in the short-run and what in the long-run. To clarify the idea, an example of Taiwan forests is adopted for illustration. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

This article deals with the comparison of technical efficiency results through various stochastic frontier analysis models. Effects of model type, possible frontier shift, distribution of inefficiency term, different output variable, and estimator selection were explored. For this purpose, aggregated annual data within the EU construction sector from 2000 to 2015 were used for the efficiency estimation. The resulting efficiency values were compared by correlation coefficients. Among others, it has been shown that estimator selection may strongly affect efficiency estimate for particular models.  相似文献
