Most current prevalent iterative methods can be classified into the socalled extended Krylov subspace methods, a class of iterative methods which do not fall into this category are also proposed in this paper. Comparing with traditional Krylov subspace methods which always depend on the matrix-vector multiplication with a fixed matrix, the newly introduced methods (the so-called (progressively) accumulated projection methods, or AP (PAP) for short) use a projection matrix which varies in every iteration to form a subspace from which an approximate solution is sought. More importantly, an accelerative approach (called APAP) is introduced to improve the convergence of PAP method. Numerical experiments demonstrate some surprisingly improved convergence behaviors. Comparisons between benchmark extended Krylov subspace methods (Block Jacobi and GMRES) are made and one can also see remarkable advantage of APAP in some examples. APAP is also used to solve systems with extremely ill-conditioned coefficient matrix (the Hilbert matrix) and numerical experiments shows that it can bring very satisfactory results even when the size of system is up to a few thousands.  相似文献

In the present paper, we propose block Krylov subspace methods for solving the Sylvester matrix equation AXXB=C. We first consider the case when A is large and B is of small size. We use block Krylov subspace methods such as the block Arnoldi and the block Lanczos algorithms to compute approximations to the solution of the Sylvester matrix equation. When both matrices are large and the right-hand side matrix is of small rank, we will show how to extract low-rank approximations. We give some theoretical results such as perturbation results and bounds of the norm of the error. Numerical experiments will also be given to show the effectiveness of these block methods.  相似文献

The solution of large linear discrete ill-posed problems by iterative methods continues to receive considerable attention. This paper presents decomposition methods that split the solution space into a Krylov subspace that is determined by the iterative method and an auxiliary subspace that can be chosen to help represent pertinent features of the solution. Decomposition is well suited for use with the GMRES, RRGMRES, and LSQR iterative schemes.  相似文献

The Ritz and harmonic Ritz values are approximate eigenvalues, which can be computed cheaply within the FOM and GMRES Krylov subspace iterative methods for solving non‐symmetric linear systems. They are also the zeros of the residual polynomials of FOM and GMRES, respectively. In this paper we show that the Walker–Zhou interpretation of GMRES enables us to formulate the relation between the harmonic Ritz values and GMRES in the same way as the relation between the Ritz values and FOM. We present an upper bound for the norm of the difference between the matrices from which the Ritz and harmonic Ritz values are computed. The differences between the Ritz and harmonic Ritz values enable us to describe the breakdown of FOM and stagnation of GMRES. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The regularizing properties of the Golub–Kahan bidiagonalization algorithm are powerful when the associated Krylov subspace captures the dominating components of the solution. In some applications the regularized solution can be further improved by enrichment, that is, by augmenting the Krylov subspace with a low‐dimensional subspace that represents specific prior information. Inspired by earlier work on GMRES, we demonstrate how to carry these ideas over to the bidiagonalization algorithm, and we describe how to incorporate Tikhonov regularization. This leads to a hybrid iterative method where the choice of regularization parameter in each iteration also provides a stopping rule.  相似文献

A new iterative scheme is described for the solution of large linear systems of equations with a matrix of the form A = ρU + ζI, where ρ and ζ are constants, U is a unitary matrix and I is the identity matrix. We show that for such matrices a Krylov subspace basis can be generated by recursion formulas with few terms. This leads to a minimal residual algorithm that requires little storage and makes it possible to determine each iterate with fairly little arithmetic work. This algorithm provides a model for iterative methods for non-Hermitian linear systems of equations, in a similar way to the conjugate gradient and conjugate residual algorithms. Our iterative scheme illustrates that results by Faber and Manteuffel [3,4] on the existence of conjugate gradient algorithms with short recurrence relations, and related results by Joubert and Young [13], can be extended.  相似文献

The FEAST eigenvalue algorithm is a subspace iteration algorithm that uses contour integration to obtain the eigenvectors of a matrix for the eigenvalues that are located in any user‐defined region in the complex plane. By computing small numbers of eigenvalues in specific regions of the complex plane, FEAST is able to naturally parallelize the solution of eigenvalue problems by solving for multiple eigenpairs simultaneously. The traditional FEAST algorithm is implemented by directly solving collections of shifted linear systems of equations; in this paper, we describe a variation of the FEAST algorithm that uses iterative Krylov subspace algorithms for solving the shifted linear systems inexactly. We show that this iterative FEAST algorithm (which we call IFEAST) is mathematically equivalent to a block Krylov subspace method for solving eigenvalue problems. By using Krylov subspaces indirectly through solving shifted linear systems, rather than directly using them in projecting the eigenvalue problem, it becomes possible to use IFEAST to solve eigenvalue problems using very large dimension Krylov subspaces without ever having to store a basis for those subspaces. IFEAST thus combines the flexibility and power of Krylov methods, requiring only matrix–vector multiplication for solving eigenvalue problems, with the natural parallelism of the traditional FEAST algorithm. We discuss the relationship between IFEAST and more traditional Krylov methods and provide numerical examples illustrating its behavior.  相似文献

An overview is given of the simplifications which arise when p-cyclic systems are solved by iterative methods. Besides the classic iterative methods, we treat the Chebyshev semi-iterative method and the OR and MR variants of the class of Krylov subspace methods. Particular emphasis is given to equivalent iterations applied to the cyclically reduced system.  相似文献

Typical behaviour of the solution of a linear system of equations obtained iteratively by Krylov methods can be characterized by three stages. Initially the residual diminishes steadily; this is followed by stagnation and finally rapid convergence near the algebraic grade. This study examines this behaviour in terms of the concepts of approximately invariant subspace and what we have called the analytic grade of a Krylov sequence. It is shown how the small Ritz values play a vital role in the convergence and how this knowledge helps in the construction of an effective preconditioner. Krylov subspace methods and their variants are presently the favorite iterative methods for solving a system of linear equations. Although it is a purely linear algebra problem, it can be tackled by the theory of formal orthogonal polynomials. This theory helps to understand the origin of the algorithms for the implementation of Krylov subspace methods and, moreover, the use of formal orthogonal polynomials brings a major simplification in the treatment of some numerical problems related to these algorithms. This paper reviews this approach in the case of Lanczos method and its variants, the novelty being the introduction of a preconditioner.  相似文献

Despite its usefulness in solving eigenvalue problems and linear systems of equations, the nonsymmetric Lanczos method is known to suffer from a potential breakdown problem. Previous and recent approaches for handling the Lanczos exact and near-breakdowns include, for example, the look-ahead schemes by Parlett-Taylor-Liu [23], Freund-Gutknecht-Nachtigal [9], and Brezinski-Redivo Zaglia-Sadok [4]; the combined look-ahead and restart scheme by Joubert [18]; and the low-rank modified Lanczos scheme by Huckle [17]. In this paper, we present yet another scheme based on a modified Krylov subspace approach for the solution of nonsymmetric linear systems. When a breakdown occurs, our approach seeks a modified dual Krylov subspace, which is the sum of the original subspace and a new Krylov subspaceK m (w j ,A T ) wherew j is a newstart vector (this approach has been studied by Ye [26] for eigenvalue computations). Based on this strategy, we have developed a practical algorithm for linear systems called the MLAN/QM algorithm, which also incorporates the residual quasi-minimization as proposed in [12]. We present a few convergence bounds for the method as well as numerical results to show its effectiveness.Research supported by Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.  相似文献

We consider the approximation of operator functions in resolvent Krylov subspaces. Besides many other applications, such approximations are currently of high interest for the approximation of φ-functions that arise in the numerical solution of evolution equations by exponential integrators. It is well known that Krylov subspace methods for matrix functions without exponential decay show superlinear convergence behaviour if the number of steps is larger than the norm of the operator. Thus, Krylov approximations may fail to converge for unbounded operators. In this paper, we analyse a rational Krylov subspace method which converges not only for finite element or finite difference approximations to differential operators but even for abstract, unbounded operators whose field of values lies in the left half plane. In contrast to standard Krylov methods, the convergence will be independent of the norm of the discretised operator and thus of the spatial discretisation. We will discuss efficient implementations for finite element discretisations and illustrate our analysis with numerical experiments.  相似文献

Tikhonov regularization is a popular method for the solution of linear discrete ill-posed problems with error-contaminated data. Nonstationary iterated Tikhonov regularization is known to be able to determine approximate solutions of higher quality than standard Tikhonov regularization. We investigate the choice of solution subspace in iterative methods for nonstationary iterated Tikhonov regularization of large-scale problems. Generalized Krylov subspaces are compared with Krylov subspaces that are generated by Golub–Kahan bidiagonalization and the Arnoldi process. Numerical examples illustrate the effectiveness of the methods.  相似文献

We consider numerical methods for the incompressible Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes equations discretized by finite difference techniques on non-staggered grids in body-fitted coordinates. A segregated approach is used to solve the pressure–velocity coupling problem. Several iterative pressure linear solvers including Krylov subspace and multigrid methods and their combination have been developed to compare the efficiency of each method and to design a robust solver. Three-dimensional numerical experiments carried out on scalar and vector machines and performed on different fluid flow problems show that a combination of multigrid and Krylov subspace methods is a robust and efficient pressure solver. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We consider the GMRES(m,k) method for the solution of linear systems Ax=b, i.e. the restarted GMRES with restart m where to the standard Krylov subspace of dimension m the other subspace of dimension k is added, resulting in an augmented Krylov subspace. This additional subspace approximates usually an A‐invariant subspace. The eigenspaces associated with the eigenvalues closest to zero are commonly used, as those are thought to hinder convergence the most. The behaviour of residual bounds is described for various situations which can arise during the GMRES(m,k) process. The obtained estimates for the norm of the residual vector suggest sufficient conditions for convergence of GMRES(m,k) and illustrate that these augmentation techniques can remove stagnation of GMRES(m) in many cases. All estimates are independent of the choice of an initial approximation. Conclusions and remarks assessing numerically the quality of proposed bounds conclude the paper. For large systems of linear equations, iterative methods provide attractive solution techniques. We describe the applicability and convergence of iterative methods of Krylov subspace type for an important class of symmetric and indefinite matrix problems, namely augmented (or KKT) systems. Specifically, we consider preconditioned minimum residual methods and discuss indefinite versus positive definite preconditioning. For a natural choice of starting vector we prove that when the definite and indenfinite preconditioners are related in the obvious way, MINRES (which is applicable in the case of positive definite preconditioning) and full GMRES (which is applicable in the case of indefinite preconditioning) give residual vectors with identical Euclidean norm at each iteration. Moreover, we show that the convergence of both methods is related to a system of normal equations for which the LSQR algorithm can be employed. As a side result, we give a rare example of a non-trivial normal(1) matrix where the corresponding inner product is explicitly known: a conjugate gradient method therefore exists and can be employed in this case. In this paper we revisit the solution of ill-posed problems by preconditioned iterative methods from a Bayesian statistical inversion perspective. After a brief review of the most popular Krylov subspace iterative methods for the solution of linear discrete ill-posed problems and some basic statistics results, we analyze the statistical meaning of left and right preconditioners, as well as projected-restarted strategies. Computed examples illustrating the interplay between statistics and preconditioning are also presented.  相似文献

We consider the use of a class of constraint preconditioners for the application of the Krylov subspace iterative method to the solution of large nonsymmetric, indefinite linear systems. The eigensolution distribution of the preconditioned matrix is determined and the convergence behavior of a Krylov subspace method such as GMRES is described. The choices of the parameter matrices and the implementation of the preconditioning step are discussed. Numerical experiments are presented. For solving least squares problems, the CGLS method is a typical method in the point of view of iterative methods. When the least squares problems are ill-conditioned, the convergence behavior of the CGLS method will present a deteriorated result. We expect to select other iterative Krylov subspace methods to overcome the disadvantage of CGLS. Here the GMRES method is a suitable algorithm for the reason that it is derived from the minimal residual norm approach, which coincides with least squares problems. Ken Hayami proposed BAGMRES for solving least squares problems in [\emph{GMRES Methods for Least Squares Problems, SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl., 31(2010)}, pp.2400-2430]. The deflation and balancing preconditioners can optimize the convergence rate through modulating spectral distribution. Hence, in this paper we utilize preconditioned iterative Krylov subspace methods with deflation and balancing preconditioners in order to solve ill-conditioned least squares problems. Numerical experiments show that the methods proposed in this paper are better than the CGLS method.  相似文献
