Tikhonov regularization is a popular method for the solution of linear discrete ill-posed problems with error-contaminated data. Nonstationary iterated Tikhonov regularization is known to be able to determine approximate solutions of higher quality than standard Tikhonov regularization. We investigate the choice of solution subspace in iterative methods for nonstationary iterated Tikhonov regularization of large-scale problems. Generalized Krylov subspaces are compared with Krylov subspaces that are generated by Golub–Kahan bidiagonalization and the Arnoldi process. Numerical examples illustrate the effectiveness of the methods.  相似文献

LSQR, a Lanczos bidiagonalization based Krylov subspace iterative method, and its mathematically equivalent conjugate gradient for least squares problems (CGLS) applied to normal equations system, are commonly used for large-scale discrete ill-posed problems. It is well known that LSQR and CGLS have regularizing effects, where the number of iterations plays the role of the regularization parameter. However, it has long been unknown whether the regularizing effects are good enough to find best possible regularized solutions. Here a best possible regularized solution means that it is at least as accurate as the best regularized solution obtained by the truncated singular value decomposition (TSVD) method. We establish bounds for the distance between the k-dimensional Krylov subspace and the k-dimensional dominant right singular space. They show that the Krylov subspace captures the dominant right singular space better for severely and moderately ill-posed problems than for mildly ill-posed problems. Our general conclusions are that LSQR has better regularizing effects for the first two kinds of problems than for the third kind, and a hybrid LSQR with additional regularization is generally needed for mildly ill-posed problems. Exploiting the established bounds, we derive an estimate for the accuracy of the rank k approximation generated by Lanczos bidiagonalization. Numerical experiments illustrate that the regularizing effects of LSQR are good enough to compute best possible regularized solutions for severely and moderately ill-posed problems, stronger than our theory predicts, but they are not for mildly ill-posed problems and additional regularization is needed.  相似文献

Regularization techniques based on the Golub-Kahan iterative bidiagonalization belong among popular approaches for solving large ill-posed problems. First, the original problem is projected onto a lower dimensional subspace using the bidiagonalization algorithm, which by itself represents a form of regularization by projection. The projected problem, however, inherits a part of the ill-posedness of the original problem, and therefore some form of inner regularization must be applied. Stopping criteria for the whole process are then based on the regularization of the projected (small) problem. In this paper we consider an ill-posed problem with a noisy right-hand side (observation vector), where the noise level is unknown. We show how the information from the Golub-Kahan iterative bidiagonalization can be used for estimating the noise level. Such information can be useful for constructing efficient stopping criteria in solving ill-posed problems.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the problem of approximating the solution of infinite linear systems, finitely expressed by a sparse coefficient matrix. We analyse an algorithm based on Krylov subspace methods embedded in an adaptive enlargement scheme. The management of the algorithm is not trivial, due to the irregular convergence behaviour frequently displayed by Krylov subspace methods for nonsymmetric systems. Numerical experiments, carried out on several test problems, indicate that the more robust methods, such as GMRES and QMR, embedded in the adaptive enlargement scheme, exhibit good performances.  相似文献

Uncertainty quantification for linear inverse problems remains a challenging task, especially for problems with a very large number of unknown parameters (e.g., dynamic inverse problems) and for problems where computation of the square root and inverse of the prior covariance matrix are not feasible. This work exploits Krylov subspace methods to develop and analyze new techniques for large‐scale uncertainty quantification in inverse problems. In this work, we assume that generalized Golub‐Kahan‐based methods have been used to compute an estimate of the solution, and we describe efficient methods to explore the posterior distribution. In particular, we use the generalized Golub‐Kahan bidiagonalization to derive an approximation of the posterior covariance matrix, and we provide theoretical results that quantify the accuracy of the approximate posterior covariance matrix and of the resulting posterior distribution. Then, we describe efficient methods that use the approximation to compute measures of uncertainty, including the Kullback‐Liebler divergence. We present two methods that use the preconditioned Lanczos algorithm to efficiently generate samples from the posterior distribution. Numerical examples from dynamic photoacoustic tomography demonstrate the effectiveness of the described approaches.  相似文献

This paper gives the truncated version of the Minpert method:the incomplete minimum perturbation algorithm(IMinpert).It is based on an incomplete orthogonal- ization of the Krylov vectors in question,and gives a quasi-minimum backward error solution over the Krylov subspace.In order to make the practical implementation of IMinpert easy and convenient,we give another approximate version of the IMinpert method:A-IMinpert.Theoretical properties of the latter algorithm are discussed.Nu- merical experiments are reported to show the proposed method is effective in practice and is competitive with the Minpert algorithm.  相似文献

Given a square matrix A, the inverse subspace problem is concerned with determining a closest matrix to A with a prescribed invariant subspace. When A is Hermitian, the closest matrix may be required to be Hermitian. We measure distance in the Frobenius norm and discuss applications to Krylov subspace methods for the solution of large‐scale linear systems of equations and eigenvalue problems as well as to the construction of blurring matrices. Extensions that allow the matrix A to be rectangular and applications to Lanczos bidiagonalization, as well as to the recently proposed subspace‐restricted SVD method for the solution of linear discrete ill‐posed problems, also are considered.Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The FEAST eigenvalue algorithm is a subspace iteration algorithm that uses contour integration to obtain the eigenvectors of a matrix for the eigenvalues that are located in any user‐defined region in the complex plane. By computing small numbers of eigenvalues in specific regions of the complex plane, FEAST is able to naturally parallelize the solution of eigenvalue problems by solving for multiple eigenpairs simultaneously. The traditional FEAST algorithm is implemented by directly solving collections of shifted linear systems of equations; in this paper, we describe a variation of the FEAST algorithm that uses iterative Krylov subspace algorithms for solving the shifted linear systems inexactly. We show that this iterative FEAST algorithm (which we call IFEAST) is mathematically equivalent to a block Krylov subspace method for solving eigenvalue problems. By using Krylov subspaces indirectly through solving shifted linear systems, rather than directly using them in projecting the eigenvalue problem, it becomes possible to use IFEAST to solve eigenvalue problems using very large dimension Krylov subspaces without ever having to store a basis for those subspaces. IFEAST thus combines the flexibility and power of Krylov methods, requiring only matrix–vector multiplication for solving eigenvalue problems, with the natural parallelism of the traditional FEAST algorithm. We discuss the relationship between IFEAST and more traditional Krylov methods and provide numerical examples illustrating its behavior.  相似文献

We study the roundoff error propagation in an algorithm which computes the orthonormal basis of a Krylov subspace with Householder orthonormal matrices. Moreover, we analyze special implementations of the classical GMRES algorithm, and of the Full Orthogonalization Method. These techniques approximate the solution of a large sparse linear system of equations on a sequence of Krylov subspaces of small dimension. Linear discrete ill-posed problems are difficult to solve numerically because their solution is very sensitive to perturbations, which may stem from errors in the data and from round-off errors introduced during the solution process. The computation of a meaningful approximate solution requires that the given problem be replaced by a nearby problem that is less sensitive to disturbances. This replacement is known as regularization. A regularization parameter determines how much the regularized problem differs from the original one. The proper choice of this parameter is important for the quality of the computed solution. This paper studies the performance of known and new approaches to choosing a suitable value of the regularization parameter for the truncated singular value decomposition method and for the LSQR iterative Krylov subspace method in the situation when no accurate estimate of the norm of the error in the data is available. The regularization parameter choice rules considered include several L-curve methods, Regińska’s method and a modification thereof, extrapolation methods, the quasi-optimality criterion, rules designed for use with LSQR, as well as hybrid methods.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider large-scale linear discrete ill-posed problems where the right-hand side contains noise. Regularization techniques such as Tikhonov regularization are needed to control the effect of the noise on the solution. In many applications such as in image restoration the coefficient matrix is given as a Kronecker product of two matrices and then Tikhonov regularization problem leads to the generalized Sylvester matrix equation. For large-scale problems, we use the global-GMRES method which is an orthogonal projection method onto a matrix Krylov subspace. We present some theoretical results and give numerical tests in image restoration.  相似文献

The Generalized Minimal Residual (GMRES) method and the Quasi-Minimal Residual (QMR) method are two Krylov methods for solving linear systems. The main difference between these methods is the generation of the basis vectors for the Krylov subspace. The GMRES method uses the Arnoldi process while QMR uses the Lanczos algorithm for constructing a basis of the Krylov subspace. In this paper we give a new method similar to QMR but based on the Hessenberg process instead of the Lanczos process. We call the new method the CMRH method. The CMRH method is less expensive and requires slightly less storage than GMRES. Numerical experiments suggest that it has behaviour similar to GMRES. For solving least squares problems, the CGLS method is a typical method in the point of view of iterative methods. When the least squares problems are ill-conditioned, the convergence behavior of the CGLS method will present a deteriorated result. We expect to select other iterative Krylov subspace methods to overcome the disadvantage of CGLS. Here the GMRES method is a suitable algorithm for the reason that it is derived from the minimal residual norm approach, which coincides with least squares problems. Ken Hayami proposed BAGMRES for solving least squares problems in [\emph{GMRES Methods for Least Squares Problems, SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl., 31(2010)}, pp.2400-2430]. The deflation and balancing preconditioners can optimize the convergence rate through modulating spectral distribution. Hence, in this paper we utilize preconditioned iterative Krylov subspace methods with deflation and balancing preconditioners in order to solve ill-conditioned least squares problems. Numerical experiments show that the methods proposed in this paper are better than the CGLS method.  相似文献

The computation of an approximate solution of linear discrete ill-posed problems with contaminated data is delicate due to the possibility of severe error propagation. Tikhonov regularization seeks to reduce the sensitivity of the computed solution to errors in the data by replacing the given ill-posed problem by a nearby problem, whose solution is less sensitive to perturbation. This regularization method requires that a suitable value of the regularization parameter be chosen. Recently, Brezinski et al. (Numer Algorithms 49, 2008) described new approaches to estimate the error in approximate solutions of linear systems of equations and applied these estimates to determine a suitable value of the regularization parameter in Tikhonov regularization when the approximate solution is computed with the aid of the singular value decomposition. This paper discusses applications of these and related error estimates to the solution of large-scale ill-posed problems when approximate solutions are computed by Tikhonov regularization based on partial Lanczos bidiagonalization of the matrix. The connection between partial Lanczos bidiagonalization and Gauss quadrature is utilized to determine inexpensive bounds for a family of error estimates. In memory of Gene H. Golub. We consider the approximation of trigonometric operator functions that arise in the numerical solution of wave equations by trigonometric integrators. It is well known that Krylov subspace methods for matrix functions without exponential decay show superlinear convergence behavior if the number of steps is larger than the norm of the operator. Thus, Krylov approximations may fail to converge for unbounded operators. In this paper, we propose and analyze a rational Krylov subspace method which converges not only for finite element or finite difference approximations to differential operators but even for abstract, unbounded operators. In contrast to standard Krylov methods, the convergence will be independent of the norm of the operator and thus of its spatial discretization. We will discuss efficient implementations for finite element discretizations and illustrate our analysis with numerical experiments. Iterative methods based on Lanczos bidiagonalization with full reorthogonalization (LBDR) are considered for solving large-scale discrete ill-posed linear least-squares problems of the form min x Ax–b2. Methods for regularization in the Krylov subspaces are discussed which use generalized cross validation (GCV) for determining the regularization parameter. These methods have the advantage that no a priori information about the noise level is required. To improve convergence of the Lanczos process we apply a variant of the implicitly restarted Lanczos algorithm by Sorensen using zero shifts. Although this restarted method simply corresponds to using LBDR with a starting vector (AA T) p b, it is shown that carrying out the process implicitly is essential for numerical stability. An LBDR algorithm is presented which incorporates implicit restarts to ensure that the global minimum of the CGV curve corresponds to a minimum on the curve for the truncated SVD solution. We study the regularization properties of iterative minimum-residual methods applied to discrete ill-posed problems. In these methods, the projection onto the underlying Krylov subspace acts as a regularizer, and the emphasis of this work is on the role played by the basis vectors of these Krylov subspaces. We provide a combination of theory and numerical examples, and our analysis confirms the experience that MINRES and MR-II can work as general regularization methods. We also demonstrate theoretically and experimentally that the same is not true, in general, for GMRES and RRGMRES – their success as regularization methods is highly problem dependent. This paper discusses an application of partial tensor Golub–Kahan bidiagonalization to the solution of large-scale linear discrete ill-posed problems based on the t-product formalism for third-order tensors proposed by Kilmer and Martin (M. E. Kilmer and C. D. Martin, Factorization strategies for third order tensors, Linear Algebra Appl., 435 (2011), pp. 641-658). The solution methods presented first reduce a given (large-scale) problem to a problem of small size by application of a few steps of tensor Golub–Kahan bidiagonalization and then regularize the reduced problem by Tikhonov's method. The regularization operator is a third-order tensor, and the data may be represented by a matrix, that is, a tensor slice, or by a general third-order tensor. A regularization parameter is determined by the discrepancy principle. This results in fully automatic solution methods that neither require a user to choose the number of bidiagonalization steps nor the regularization parameter. The methods presented extend available methods for the solution for linear discrete ill-posed problems defined by a matrix operator to linear discrete ill-posed problems defined by a third-order tensor operator. An interlacing property of singular tubes for third-order tensors is shown and applied. Several algorithms are presented. Computed examples illustrate the advantage of the tensor t-product approach, in comparison with solution methods that are based on matricization of the tensor equation.  相似文献

Summary. The GMRES method is a popular iterative method for the solution of large linear systems of equations with a nonsymmetric nonsingular matrix. However, little is known about the behavior of this method when it is applied to the solution of nonsymmetric linear ill-posed problems with a right-hand side that is contaminated by errors. We show that when the associated error-free right-hand side lies in a finite-dimensional Krylov subspace, the GMRES method is a regularization method.
