This article offers theoretical and analytical approaches to investigating how researchers and teachers can work together to create knowledge in mathematics education. It argues that researchers and teachers are members of separate, but related, communities of practice, which create and value different types of knowledge. However, connections between communities can be established through discrete boundary encounters, longer term boundary practices, or peripheral participation by members of one community in the practices of another community. A framework for analyzing researcher–teacher relationships is presented and then used to compare ways in which I, as a university-based researcher, worked with teachers in three different types of research projects. The analysis indicates that successful research collaborations are characterized by mutuality of researcher and teacher motivations, roles, and purposes, and complementarity of their expertise and knowledge. Such collaborations build two-way connections between communities through practices that support mutual engagement across the boundaries that define them.  相似文献

In this paper, we explore a novel approach for assessing the impact of a professional development programme on classroom practice of in-service middle school mathematics teachers. The particular focus of this study is the assessment of the impact on teachers’ employment of strategies used in the classroom to foster the mathematical habits of mind and mathematical self-efficacy of their students. We describe the creation and testing of a student survey designed to assess teacher classroom practice based primarily on students’ ratings of teacher practices.  相似文献

The curriculum of teacher education has been described as heterogeneous across countries and influenced by the context in which it is implemented. The present study investigates this potential heterogeneity by conducting latent class analysis of opportunities to learn mathematics, mathematics pedagogy and general pedagogy in primary teacher education as indicated by future teachers from 15 countries at the end of their training. The aim was to identify curricula profiles based on data from the “Teacher Education and Development Study: Learning to Teach Mathematics (TEDS-M)”. In each teacher education component, three groups of primary teachers were identified which differed quantitatively and qualitatively. Associations between these profiles and countries revealed broader cultural influences on OTL and thus shared (within a culture) and at the same time distinct (between cultures) visions of what primary teachers should know. Within countries, associations between curricula profiles and teacher education programs pointed to shared (within a program) and at the same time distinct (between programs) visions of what primary teachers should know at the end of their training. The OTL profiles were significantly related to outcomes of primary teacher education in terms of mathematics content knowledge, mathematics pedagogical content knowledge and general pedagogical knowledge.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to examine the cognitive demand levels of tasks used by an in-service primary teacher during length measurement and perimeter instruction and to examine a possible link between these tasks and the teacher’s mathematical knowledge in teaching. For this purpose, a case study approach was used and the data was drawn from classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and field notes. Specific tasks from length measurement and perimeter instruction were presented and analyzed according to the Mathematical Tasks Framework. Then, how these tasks gave information about the teacher’s mathematical knowledge in teaching in the length measurement and perimeter topics was examined according to the Knowledge Quartet model. According to the findings of the study, the tasks used during length measurement and perimeter instruction were mostly categorized as low-level tasks. In addition, teacher’s mathematical knowledge in teaching affected the implementation of the tasks.  相似文献

This article illustrates how four teacher educators in training were challenged with respect to their epistemology and perceptions of teaching and learning mathematics through their interactions with expressive digital media during a professional development course. The research focused on their experience of communally constructing artifacts and their reflections on the nature of mathematics and mathematics teaching and learning with digital media. I discussed three different ways in which this media was used by the teachers; first, as a means to engage in technical-applied mathematics to engineer mathematical models; second, as a means to construct models for students to engage in experimental-constructivist activity; thirdly, as a means to engage in a discussion of a challenging mathematical problem.

The aim of this study is to identify the effects of formalism in teaching on primary and secondary school mathematics teacher trainees’ algebraic and geometric interpretations of the notions of linear dependency/independency. Quantitative research methods are drawn in order to determine differences in success levels between algebraic and geometric interpretations of the linear dependency/independency of vectors presented in two- and three-dimensional space. On the other hand, qualitative research methods were utilized in order to investigate thinking modes involved in the geometric interpretation of the same notion. The participants were a total of 144 teacher trainees registered at the Selçuk University, Education Faculty in 2007–2008 academic year. 33 participants were first year students at Secondary Mathematics Education Department, while 111 were second year students at Primary Mathematics Education Department. The results indicated that correlations between the formal definition of the notions of linear dependency/independency and the items of the test which required algebraic and geometric interpretation were both low. Yet, the correlation for the algebraic dimension of the test was higher than the geometric dimension. Likewise, algebraic mean success score was significantly higher than the geometric mean score.  相似文献

Two questions are on the mind of many mathematics educators; namely: What is the mathematics that we should teach in school? and how should we teach it? This is the second in a series of two papers addressing these fundamental questions. The first paper (Harel, 2008a) focuses on the first question and this paper on the second. Collectively, the two papers articulate a pedagogical stance oriented within a theoretical framework called DNR-based instruction in mathematics. The relation of this paper to the topic of this Special Issue is that it defines the concept of teacher’s knowledge base and illustrates with authentic teaching episodes an approach to its development with mathematics teachers. This approach is entailed from DNR’s premises, concepts, and instructional principles, which are also discussed in this paper.  相似文献

Scholars assert that the often-impoverished instructional practices found in urban schools are tied to teachers’ negative relationships with African American and Latin@1 students (Ferguson, 1998, McKown and Weinstein, 2002, McKown and Weinstein, 2008, Morris, 2005, Stiff and Harvey, 1988). However, measures of mathematics instructional quality rarely measure relational elements of instruction. This study responds to such shortcomings by analyzing relational interactions in urban elementary mathematics classrooms in tandem with content instruction of teachers who engage in supportive relationships with African American and Latin@ students. This study identified teachers with high quality student performance, content instruction, and supportive relationships as defined through relational interactions. After selecting two teachers, the results detail relational interactions that show how these teachers established supportive relationships with students vis-à-vis their mathematics instruction. Therefore, these findings offer insight into the ways in which relational interactions add to our understanding of quality content instruction for African American and Latin@ students.  相似文献

This paper reports on novice teacher leaders’ efforts to enact mathematics PD through an analysis of their facilitation in workshops conducted at their schools. We consider the extent to which teacher leaders facilitated the Problem-Solving Cycle model of PD with integrity to its key characteristics. We examine the characteristics they enacted particularly well and those that were the most problematic to enact. Facilitators were generally successful with respect to workshop culture and selecting video clips for use in the PD workshops. They had more difficulty supporting discussions to foster aspects of mathematics teachers’ specialized content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge. We suggest a number of activities that may help to better prepare novice PD leaders to hold effective workshops. Furthermore, we conjecture that leaders of mathematics PD draw from a construct we have labeled Mathematical Knowledge for Professional Development (MKPD), and we posit some domains that may comprise this construct.  相似文献

The provision of quality learning experiences for teachers is critical to mathematics reform agendas aimed at equitable and culturally responsive teaching. In this paper we use an activity theory framework to explore one teacher’s learning journey. Drawing on the teacher’s self-report of his journey 1 year after his participation in an intervention designed to support the introduction of mathematical inquiry practices we examine those factors that supported expansive learning. In seeking to understand our pedagogical stance within the intervention we gained new insights into the provision of research based tools to support learning, the provision of space for individual and collective learning, and the provision of a safe learning environment both within the programme, the class, and the wider professional community. These factors are important in understanding transformational changes associated with ambitious pedagogy.  相似文献

Shulman (1987) defined pedagogical content knowledge as the knowledge required to transform subject-matter knowledge into curricular material and pedagogical representations. This paper presents the results of an exploratory case study that examined a secondary teacher’s knowledge of sine and cosine values in both clinical and professional settings to discern the characteristics of mathematical schemes that facilitate their transformation into learning artifacts and experiences for students. My analysis revealed that the teacher’s knowledge of sine and cosine values consisted of uncoordinated quantitative and arithmetic schemes and that he was cognizant only of the behavioral proficiencies these schemes enable, not the mental actions and conceptual operations they entail. Based on these findings, I hypothesize that the extent to which a teacher is consciously aware of the mental activity that comprises their mathematical conceptions influences their capacity to transform their mathematical knowledge into curricular material and pedagogical representations to effectively support students’ conceptual learning.  相似文献

A deep conceptual understanding of elementary mathematics as appropriate for teaching is increasingly thought to be an important aspect of elementary teacher capacity. This study explores preservice teachers’ initial mathematical understandings and how these understandings developed during a mathematics methods course for upper elementary teachers. The methods course was supplemented by a newly designed optional course in mathematics for teaching. Teacher candidates choosing the optional course were initially weaker in terms of mathematical understanding than their peers, yet showed stronger mathematical development after engaging in the extra hours the optional course provided.  相似文献

Most science departments offer compulsory mathematics courses to their students with the expectation that students can apply their experience from the mathematics courses to other fields of study, including science. The current study first aims to investigate the views of pre-service science teachers of science-teaching preparation degrees and their expectations regarding the difficulty level of mathematics courses in science-teaching education programmes. Second, the study investigates changes and the reasons behind the changes in their interest regarding mathematics after completing these courses. Third, the current study seeks to reveal undergraduate science teachers’ opinions regarding the contribution of undergraduate mathematics courses to their professional development. Being qualitative in nature, this study was a case study. According to the results, almost all of the students considered that undergraduate mathematics courses were ‘difficult’ because of the complex and intensive content of the courses and their poor background mathematical knowledge. Moreover, the majority of science undergraduates mentioned that mathematics would contribute to their professional development as a science teacher. On the other hand, they declared a negative change in their attitude towards mathematics after completing the mathematics courses due to continuous failure at mathematics and their teachers’ lack of knowledge in terms of teaching mathematics.  相似文献

Our research addresses the role of examples to foster the students’ development of the mathematical concepts, and of their mathematical ways of thinking. We consider the notion of example space introduced by Watson and Mason (Mathematics as a constructive activity: learners generating examples, 2005), particularly when it is not formed by a simple juxtaposition of examples, rather it is endowed by a certain structure. Such a structure is provided by the semiotic actions and by the theoretic and logical dimensions of the mathematical activities. However, the formation of structured example spaces is far from being an automatic process. In this paper, we focus on the genesis of examples and on the role of the teacher in helping the students to structure their examples spaces through the so-called cognitive apprenticeship method. We point out that the genesis of examples is often accomplished within a complex cyclic dynamics, the “cycle of examples production and modification”. We illustrate it by means of two emblematic episodes from a classroom discussion. We show that the teacher’s intervention can be crucial in helping the students to modify a wrong example, to generate the right one for the task and to start the long-term process of building up the structure of their own space of examples.  相似文献

Teachers involved in a Master's level course in diversity participated in virtual, synchronous, anonymized discussions around issues of ethnic and racial diversity, gender, and stereotypes that could impact their students’ participation in fields related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Guided by theoretical frameworks from Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) and Critical Race Theory (CRT), a convenience sample of 14 science and mathematics teachers participated in a series of virtual chats using open‐ended questioning and facilitated by two university instructors. Using conversation and critical discourse analyses, three primary themes emerged: understanding of issues related to stereotypes, encouragement of females and minorities to pursue careers in STEM, and the place for diversity discussions in science and mathematics classrooms. The teachers felt burdened by curricular and administrative constraints that inhibit their ability to participate in thought‐provoking critical conversations. The paper concludes with a discussion of ways teachers can assist in the STEM career identity development of their underrepresented females and students of color and calls for research that combines the key findings in SCCT and CRT to build confidence and capacity for teachers to effectively confront issues of racism, sexism, and stereotyping in science and mathematics classrooms.  相似文献

This paper describes our joint activity as mathematics teacher educators and academic researchers in collaborating with both experienced and novice teachers in two contexts: an emergent community of inquiry into mathematics teaching and its development; and a research methods course, offered as part of a mathematics education Master’s program, aspiring to initiate participating teachers into research practice through inquiry. Adopting an Activity Theory (AT) perspective, we analyse our activity, identifying its nature and transformations that frame our professional learning. The results indicate that our professional learning is the outcome of a continuous process of becoming aware of our own activity and its transformation in relation to that of the teachers.  相似文献

This paper investigates the classroom interactive pattern, in which the teacher aims to introduce new mathematical content to children by focusing on their mathematical thinking. First, by drawing on the results of studies on the features of social interaction patterns in mathematics classrooms, we develop a framework that we call a “guided focusing pattern,” composed of four phases. Next, we use this framework and Sfard’s (J Res Math Educ 31(3):296–327, 2000) theory of focal analysis to examine the social interaction occurring in a series of mathematics lessons conducted by an experienced teacher. In the ten consecutive lessons that we analyzed, the guided focusing pattern was salient; the teacher introduced key mathematical content to children while offering support and guidance in a variety of forms within each phase and when transitioning to the next phase. On the basis of the results, we highlight the teacher’s key instructional actions that facilitate the pattern of progressing through the mathematical content as closely linked to and guided by her lesson objectives.  相似文献

Given the acknowledged relationship between teachers’ knowledge, their teaching and pupil learning, teachers’ mathematics subject matter knowledge (MSMK) has received increased attention internationally. As children's early mathematics experiences have been recognized as a critical stage, elementary teachers’ MSMK has become a focal point among researchers and policy makers alike. International research findings have uncovered that in many cases, there is a mismatch between what is perceived to be an appropriate MSMK for teaching elementary mathematics and that demonstrated by many qualified and prospective elementary teachers. Following repeated incidences of weak MSMK during interactions with prospective elementary teachers in one Irish College of Education (provider of initial teacher education programme for elementary teachers), this study sought to examine and address the issue purposefully through two cycles of action research. This article focuses on the data collected prospective teachers’ MSMK in the initial stage (reconnaissance) of these cycles, i.e. pre-test findings. While considerable differences were evident among the pre-test population, the findings suggest that prior to the intervention stage many participating prospective teachers; regardless of previous mathematics achievements or the level of mathematics study; demonstrate weaknesses and gaps in their ‘common’ MSMK. Particular difficulties were evident in relation to pre-test items requiring knowledge of rational numbers, conceptual understanding or problem solving. These findings highlight the inadequacy of previous mathematics achievements and indeed minimum entry requirements as predictors of MSMK for teaching. As well as its contribution at a local and national level, the findings provide an Irish perspective on this international issue.  相似文献
