Imperial Rome with its >50% assassination rate of emperors, many of whom are depicted in history as ‘deranged’, initially appears a chaotic period of history beyond the purview of science. But time series analysis indicates this violence occurred non‐randomly: reign length was autocorrelated and demonstrated ‘memory persistence,’ and short reigns occurred in clusters. Additionally, deviations from average reign‐length occurred in patterns matching the Empire's rise and decline. A model is proposed for how army‐backed usurpation and post‐coup instability likely generated the observed cycles. The five‐century span of Imperial Rome likely makes it the longest‐lived regime with fair documentation, and potentially provides a ‘laboratory’ with ongoing relevance for studying transmission of violence and instability. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The present article deals with the problem of combined harvesting of a Michaelis–Menten-type ratio-dependent predator–prey system. The problem of determining the optimal harvest policy is solved by invoking Pontryagin's Maximum Principle. Dynamic optimization of the harvest policy is studied by taking the combined harvest effort as a dynamic variable. Computer simulations are carried out to illustrate our analytical findings. Biological and bioeconomical interpretations of the results are explained critically.  相似文献

We consider the B‐spline isogeometric analysis approximation of the Laplacian eigenvalue problem −Δu = λu over the d‐dimensional hypercube (0,1)d. By using tensor‐product arguments, we show that the eigenvalue–eigenvector structure of the resulting discretization matrix is completely determined by the eigenvalue–eigenvector structure of the matrix arising from the isogeometric analysis approximation based on B‐splines of degree p of the unidimensional problem . Here, n is the mesh fineness parameter, and the size of is N(n,p) = n + p − 2. In previous works, it was established that the normalized sequence enjoys an asymptotic spectral distribution described by a function ep(θ), the so‐called spectral symbol. The contributions of this paper can be summarized as follows:
  1. the eigenvalues of are arranged in ascending order, ;
  2. is a sequence of functions from [0,π] to , which depends only on p;
  3. h = 1/n and θj,n = jπh for j = 1,…,n; and
  4. is the remainder, which satisfies for some constant depending only on α and p. We also provide a proof of this expansion for α = 0 and j = 1,…,N(n,p) −(4p − 2), where 4p − 2 represents a theoretical estimate of the number of outliers .
  5. We show through numerical experiments that, for p ≥ 3 and k ≥ 1, there exists a point θ( p,k) ∈ (0,π) such that vanishes on [0,θ( p,k)]. Moreover, as it is suggested by the numerics of this paper, the infimum of θ(p,k) over all k ≥ 1, say yp, is strictly positive, and the equation holds numerically whenever θj,n < θ( p), where θ( p) is a point in (0,yp] which grows with p.
  6. For p ≥ 3, based on the asymptotic expansion in the above item 3, we propose a parallel interpolation–extrapolation algorithm for computing the eigenvalues of , excluding the outliers. The performance of the algorithm is illustrated through numerical experiments. Note that, by the previous item 4, the algorithm is actually not necessary for computing the eigenvalues corresponding to points θj,n < θ( p).

We compute the second 𝔬𝔰𝔭(1 | 2) ?relative cohomology space of 𝒦(1) with coefficients in the module of λ-densities 𝔉λ on S 1|1. This result allows us to compute the second 𝔬𝔰𝔭(1 | 2) ?relative cohomology space of 𝒦(1) with coefficients in the Poisson superalgebra 𝒮𝒫. The parabolic–parabolic Keller–Segel system for chemotaxis phenomena, is considered under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions in a smooth bounded domain Ω??n with n?2. It is proved that if ψ(u)/?(u) grows faster than u2/n as u→∞ and some further technical conditions are fulfilled, then there exist solutions that blow up in either finite or infinite time. Here, the total mass ∫Ωu(x, t)dx may attain arbitrarily small positive values. In particular, in the framework of chemotaxis models incorporating a volume‐filling effect in the sense of Painter and Hillen (Can. Appl. Math. Q. 2002; 10 (4):501–543), the results indicate how strongly the cellular movement must be inhibited at large cell densities in order to rule out chemotactic collapse. Relative to the existence of a supercompact cardinal with a measurable cardinal above it, we show that it is consistent for ?1 to be regular and for ? to be measurable and to carry precisely τ normal measures, where τ ≥ ? is any regular cardinal. In this paper, we give a method to compute the Gelfand–Kirillov dimensions of some polynomial–type weight modules. These modules are infinite-dimensional irreducible 𝔬(n,?)-modules and 𝔰𝔭(2n,?)-modules that appeared in the ?-graded oscillator generalizations of the classical theorem on harmonic polynomials established by Luo and Xu. We also found that some of these modules have the secondly minimal GK-dimension, and some of them have the larger GK-dimension than the maximal GK-dimension apearing in unitary highest-weight modules.  相似文献

This article aims to contribute to the study of algebras with triangular decomposition over a Hopf algebra, as well as the BGG Category 𝒪. We study functorial properties of 𝒪 across various setups. The first setup is over a skew group ring, involving a finite group Γ acting on a regular triangular algebra A. We develop Clifford theory for A?Γ, and obtain results on block decomposition, complete reducibility, and enough projectives. 𝒪 is shown to be a highest weight category when A satisfies one of the “Conditions (S);” the BGG Reciprocity formula is slightly different because the duality functor need not preserve each simple module.

Next, we turn to tensor products of such skew group rings; such a product is also a skew group ring. We are thus able to relate four different types of Categories 𝒪; more precisely, we list several conditions, each of which is equivalent in any one setup, to any other setup, and which yield information about 𝒪.  相似文献

The K4‐free process starts with the empty graph on n vertices and at each step adds a new edge chosen uniformly at random from all remaining edges that do not complete a copy of K4. Let G be the random maximal K4‐free graph obtained at the end of the process. We show that for some positive constant C, with high probability as , the maximum degree in G is at most . This resolves a conjecture of Bohman and Keevash for the K4‐free process and improves on previous bounds obtained by Bollobás and Riordan and by Osthus and Taraz. Combined with results of Bohman and Keevash this shows that with high probability G has edges and is ‘nearly regular’, i.e., every vertex has degree . This answers a question of Erd?s, Suen and Winkler for the K4‐free process. We furthermore deduce an additional structural property: we show that whp the independence number of G is at least , which matches an upper bound obtained by Bohman up to a factor of . Our analysis of the K4‐free process also yields a new result in Ramsey theory: for a special case of a well‐studied function introduced by Erd?s and Rogers we slightly improve the best known upper bound.Copyright © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Roger Hoerl and Ron Snee have done the statistical profession a major favor in providing their vision of what statisticians need to do to help service industries in the post‐meltdown environment. In this discussion, I briefly flesh out my understanding of the actions that statisticians must take to help service industries in the current and future environment. I then turn to a consideration of what I see as some of the significant weaknesses in current statistical curricula in preparing graduates to fulfill these new emerging needs. We consider arrays of size 2?×?2?×?2 and 2?×?2?×?2?×?2 over the fields with two and three elements. We use computer algebra to determine the canonical forms of these arrays with respect to the action of the semidirect product of general linear groups with the symmetric group. Let X be the surface 𝕋 × 𝕋, where 𝕋 is the complex torus. This article is the third in a series studying the fundamental group of the Galois cover of X with respect to a generic projection onto ??2.

Van Kampen Theorem gives a presentation of the fundamental group of the complement of the branch curve, with 54 generators and more than 2000 relations. Here we introduce a certain natural quotient (obtained by identifying pairs of generators), prove it is a quotient of a Coxeter group related to the degeneration of X, and show that this quotient is virtually nilpotent.
