Categorical data of high (but finite) dimensionality generate sparsely populated J-way contingency tables because of finite sample sizes. A model representing such data by a "smooth" low dimensional parametric structure using a "natural" metric would be useful. We discuss a model using a metric determined by convex sets to represent moments of a discrete distribution to order J. The model is shown, from theorems on convex polytopes, to depend only on the linear space spanned by the convex set—it is otherwise measure invariant. We provide an empirical example to illustrate the maximum likelihood estimation of parameters of a particular statistical application (Grade of Membership analysis) of such a model.  相似文献

We continue studying the class of weakly convex sets (in the sense of Vial). For points in a sufficiently small neighborhood of a closed weakly convex subset in Hubert space, we prove that the metric projection on this set exists and is unique. In other words, we show that the closed weakly convex sets have a Chebyshev layer. We prove that the metric projection of a point on a weakly convex set satisfies the Lipschitz condition with respect to a point and the Hölder condition with exponent 1/2 with respect to a set. We develop a method for constructing a continuous parametrization of a set-valued mapping with weakly convex images. We obtain an explicit estimate for the modulus of continuity of the parametrizing function.  相似文献

Let X be a non-elementary Riemann surface of type(g,n),where g is the number of genus and n is the number of punctures with 3g-3+n1.Let T(X)be the Teichmller space of X.By constructing a certain subset E of T(X),we show that the convex hull of E with respect to the Teichmller metric,the Carathodory metric and the Weil-Petersson metric is not in any thick part of the Teichmler space,respectively.This implies that convex hulls of thick part of Teichmller space with respect to these metrics are not always in thick part of Teichmller space,as well as the facts that thick part of Teichmller space is not always convex with respect to these metrics.  相似文献

This paper is a continuation of the author's first paper (Set-Valued Anal. 9 (2001), pp. 217–245), where the normed and partially ordered vector space of directed sets is constructed and the cone of all nonempty convex compact sets in R n is embedded. A visualization of directed sets and of differences of convex compact sets is presented and its geometrical components and properties are studied. The three components of the visualization are compared with other known differences of convex compact sets.  相似文献

Some criterias for the non-minimality of pairs of compact convex sets of a real locally convex topological vector space are proved, based on a reduction technique via cutting planes and excision of compact convex subsets. The cyclic projections algorithm is an important method for determining a point in the intersection of a finite number of closed convex sets in a Hilbert space. That is, for determining a solution to the “convex feasibility” problem. This is the third paper in a series on a study of the rate of convergence for the cyclic projections algorithm. In the first of these papers, we showed that the rate could be described in terms of the “angles” between the convex sets involved. In the second, we showed that these angles often had a more tractable formulation in terms of the “norm” of the product of the (nonlinear) metric projections onto related convex sets.In this paper, we show that the rate of convergence of the cyclic projections algorithm is also intimately related to the “linear regularity property” of Bauschke and Borwein, the “normal property” of Jameson (as well as Bakan, Deutsch, and Li’s generalization of Jameson’s normal property), the “strong conical hull intersection property” of Deutsch, Li, and Ward, and the rate of convergence of iterated parallel projections. Such properties have already been shown to be important in various other contexts as well.  相似文献

A set in a metric space is called a ?eby?ev set if it contains a unique “nearest neighbour” to each point of the space. In this paper we introduce the concept of a monotone arc of convex sets and show that compact monotone arcs have the ?eby?ev property in the hyperspace of compact strictly convex sets. In the hyperspace of compact convex sets only certain monotone arcs are ?eby?ev ; these are characterized. Results are also obtained for affine segments and for noncompact monotone arcs.  相似文献

If the set of monomorphisms between locally convex spaces is not empty, then it is an open subset of the space of all continuous and linear operators endowed with the topology of the uniform convergence on the bounded sets if and only if the domain space is normable. The corresponding characterization for the set of almost open operators is also obtained; it is related to the lifting of bounded sets and to the quasinormability of the domain space. Other properties and examples are analyzed.

We consider a separable complete metric space equipped with a convex combination operation. For such spaces, we identify the corresponding convexification operator and show that the invariant elements for this operator appear naturally as limits in the strong law of large numbers. It is shown how to uplift the suggested construction to work with subsets of the basic space in order to develop a systematic way of proving laws of large numbers for such operations with random sets.  相似文献

A normed and partially ordered vector space of so-called directed sets is constructed, in which the convex cone of all nonempty convex compact sets in R n is embedded by a positively linear, order preserving and isometric embedding (with respect to a new metric stronger than the Hausdorff metric and equivalent to the Demyanov one). This space is a Banach and a Riesz space for all dimensions and a Banach lattice for n=1. The directed sets in R n are parametrized by normal directions and defined recursively with respect to the dimension n by the help of a support function and directed supporting faces of lower dimension prescribing the boundary. The operations (addition, subtraction, scalar multiplication) are defined by acting separately on the support function and recursively on the directed supporting faces. Generalized intervals introduced by Kaucher form the basis of this recursive approach. Visualizations of directed sets will be presented in the second part of the paper.  相似文献

The paper deals with the approximation of bounded real functions f on a compact metric space (X, d) by so-called controllable step functions in continuation of [Ri/Ste]. These step functions are connected with controllable coverings, that are finite coverings of compact metric spaces by subsets whose sizes fulfil a uniformity condition depending on the entropy numbers εn(X) of the space X. We show that a strong form of local finiteness holds for these coverings on compact metric subspaces of IRm and Sm. This leads to a Bernstein type theorem if the space is of finite convex information. In this case the corresponding approximation numbers εn(f) have the same asymptotics its ω(f, εn(X)) for f ε C(X). Finally, the results concerning functions f ε M(X) and f ε C(X) are transferred to operators with values in M(X) and C(X), respectively.  相似文献

We study the volume functional on the space of constant scalar curvature metrics with a prescribed boundary metric. We derive a sufficient and necessary condition for a metric to be a critical point, and show that the only domains in space forms, on which the standard metrics are critical points, are geodesic balls. In the zero scalar curvature case, assuming the boundary can be isometrically embedded in the Euclidean space as a compact strictly convex hypersurface, we show that the volume of a critical point is always no less than the Euclidean volume bounded by the isometric embedding of the boundary, and the two volumes are equal if and only if the critical point is isometric to a standard Euclidean ball. We also derive a second variation formula and apply it to show that, on Euclidean balls and “small” hyperbolic and spherical balls in dimensions 3 ≤ n ≤ 5, the standard space form metrics are indeed saddle points for the volume functional.  相似文献

The space of Kähler metrics, on the one hand, can be approximated by subspaces of algebraic metrics, while, on the other hand, it can also be enlarged to finite-energy spaces arising in pluripotential theory. The latter spaces are realized as metric completions of Finsler structures on the space of Kähler metrics. The former spaces are the finite-dimensional spaces of Fubini-Study metrics of Kähler quantization. The goal of this article is to draw a connection between the two. We show that the Finsler structures on the space of Kähler potentials can be quantized. More precisely, given a Kähler manifold polarized by an ample line bundle we endow the space of Hermitian metrics on powers of that line bundle with Finsler structures and show that the resulting path length metric spaces recover the corresponding metric completions of the Finsler structures on the space of Kähler potentials. This has a number of applications, among them a new Lidskii-type inequality on the space of Kähler metrics, a new approach to the rooftop envelopes and Pythagorean formulas of Kähler geometry, and approximation of finite-energy potentials, as well as geodesic segments by the corresponding smooth algebraic objects. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献
