We prove that the normalized Steklov eigenvalues of a bounded domain in a complete Riemannian manifold are bounded above in terms of the inverse of the isoperimetric ratio of the domain. Consequently, the normalized Steklov eigenvalues of a bounded domain in Euclidean space, hyperbolic space or a standard hemisphere are uniformly bounded above. On a compact surface with boundary, we obtain uniform bounds for the normalized Steklov eigenvalues in terms of the genus. We also establish a relationship between the Steklov eigenvalues of a domain and the eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on its boundary hypersurface.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the spectral analysis of impulsive quadratic pencil of difference operators. We first present a boundary value problem consisting one interior impulsive point on the whole axis corresponding to the above mentioned operator. After introducing the solutions of impulsive quadratic pencil of difference equation, we obtain the asymptotic equation of the function related to the Wronskian of these solutions to be helpful for further works, then we determine resolvent operator and continuous spectrum. Finally, we provide sufficient conditions guarenteeing finiteness of eigenvalues and spectral singularities by means of uniqueness theorems of analytic functions. The main aim of this paper is demonstrating the impulsive quadratic pencil of difference operator is of finite number of eigenvalues and spectral singularities with finite multiplicities which is an uninvestigated problem proposed in the literature.  相似文献

We study the eigenvalue problem for the Riemannian Pucci operator on geodesic balls. We establish upper and lower bounds for the principal Pucci eigenvalues depending on the curvature, extending Cheng’s eigenvalue comparison theorem for the Laplace–Beltrami operator. For manifolds with bounded sectional curvature, we prove Cheng’s bounds hold for Pucci eigenvalues on geodesic balls of radius less than the injectivity radius. For manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded below, we prove Cheng’s upper bound holds for Pucci eigenvalues on certain small geodesic balls. We also prove that the principal Pucci eigenvalues of an \({O(n)}\)-invariant hypersurface immersed in \({{\mathbb{R}}^{n+1}}\) with one smooth boundary component are smaller than the eigenvalues of an \({n}\)-dimensional Euclidean ball with the same boundary.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the nonself‐adjoint discontinuous Sturm Liouville operator with periodic (antiperiodic) boundary condition and compatibility conditions. Asymptotic formulas of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the operator are obtained. Using these accurate asymptotic formulas for eigenvalues and eigenfunctions, we prove the basisness of the root functions of the boundary value problem.  相似文献

For two classes of non-self-adjoint operators, close to normal ones, one establishes a formula for the asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues situated in a fixed angle of the complex plane. One considers elliptic pseudodifferential operators, acting in the sections of a vector bundle over a manifold without boundary, the operators of elliptic boundary-value problems for pseudodifferential operators. The integrated density of states (IDS) for the Schr?dinger operators is defined in two ways: by using the counting function of eigenvalues of the operator restricted to bounded regions with appropriate boundary conditions or by using the spectral projection of the whole space operator. A sufficient condition for the coincidence of the two definitions above is given. Moreover, a sufficient condition for the coincidence of the IDS for the Dirichlet boundary conditions and the IDS for the Neumann boundary conditions is given. We consider a class of non‐selfadjoint operators generated by the equation and the boundary conditions, which govern small vibrations of an ideal filament with non‐conservative boundary conditions at one end and a heavy load at the other end. The filament has a non‐constant density and is subject to a viscous damping with a non‐constant damping coefficient. The boundary conditions contain two arbitrary complex parameters. In our previous paper (Mathematical Methods in the Applied Sciences 2001; 24 (15) : 1139–1169), we have derived the asymptotic approximations for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the aforementioned non‐selfadjoint operators when the boundary parameters were arbitrary complex numbers except for one specific value of one of the parameters. We call this value the critical value of the boundary parameter. It has been shown (in Mathematical Methods in the Applied Sciences 2001; 24 (15) : 1139–1169) that the entire set of the eigenvalues is located in a strip parallel to the real axis. The latter property is crucial for the proof of the fact that the set of the root vectors of the operator forms a Riesz basis in the state space of the system. In the present paper, we derive the asymptotics of the spectrum exactly in the case of the critical value of the boundary parameter. We show that in this case, the asymptotics of the eigenvalues is totally different, i.e. both the imaginary and real parts of eigenvalues tend to ∞as the number of an eigenvalue increases. We will show in our next paper, that as an indirect consequence of such a behaviour of the eigenvalues, the set of the root vectors of the corresponding operator is not uniformly minimal (let alone the Riesz basis property). We consider boundary value problems for the Laplace operator in a domain with boundary conditions of rapidly varying type: the Dirichlet homogeneous condition and the third (Fourier) boundary condition or a Steklov type condition. We construct the limit (homogenized) problem and prove that solutions, eigenvalues, and eigenfunctions of the original problem converge respectively to solutions, eigenvalues, and eigenfunctions of the limit problem. We deal with the Dirac operator with eigenvalue dependent boundary and jump conditions. Properties of eigenvalues, eigenfunctions and the resolvent operator are studied. We study a fourth-order differential operator with matrix coefficients whose domain is determined by the Dirichlet boundary conditions. An asymptotics of the weighted average of the eigenvalues of this operator is obtained in the general case. As a consequence of this result, we present the asymptotics of the eigenvalues in several special cases. The obtained results significantly improve the already known asymptotic formulas for the eigenvalues of a one-dimensional fourth-order differential operator.  相似文献

A boundary value problem for a higher order differential operator with separated boundary conditions is considered. The asymptotics of solutions of the corresponding differential equation for large values of the spectral parameter is studied. The indicator diagram of the equation for the eigenvalues is studied. The skew-hermitian part of the Cauchy operator, defined with respect to arclength measure on the boundary, is known as the Kerzman-Stein operator. For an ellipse, the eigenvalues of this operator are shown to have multiplicity two. This paper deals with discrete second order Sturm-Liouville problems in which the parameter that is part of the Sturm-Liouville difference equation also appears linearly in the boundary conditions. An appropriate Green's formula is developed for this problem, which leads to the fact that the eigenvalues are simple, and that they are real under appropriate restrictions. A boundary value problem can be expressed by a system of equations, and finding solutions to a boundary value problem is equivalent to finding the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the coefficient matrix of a related linear system. Thus, the behavior of eigenvalues and eigenvectors is investigated using techniques in linear algebra, and a linear-algebraic proof is given that the eigenvalues are distinct under appropriate restrictions. The operator is extended to a self-adjoint operator and an expansion theorem is proved.  相似文献

Summary. In this work we calculate the eigenvalues obtained by preconditioning the discrete Helmholtz operator with Sommerfeld-like boundary conditions on a rectilinear domain, by a related operator with boundary conditions that permit the use of fast solvers. The main innovation is that the eigenvalues for two and three-dimensional domains can be calculated exactly by solving a set of one-dimensional eigenvalue problems. This permits analysis of quite large problems. For grids fine enough to resolve the solution for a given wave number, preconditioning using Neumann boundary conditions yields eigenvalues that are uniformly bounded, located in the first quadrant, and outside the unit circle. In contrast, Dirichlet boundary conditions yield eigenvalues that approach zero as the product of wave number with the mesh size is decreased. These eigenvalue properties yield the first insight into the behavior of iterative methods such as GMRES applied to these preconditioned problems. Abstract

The asymptotic behavior of eigenvalues of an elliptic operator with a divergence form is discussed. The coefficients of the operator are discontinuous through a boundary of a subdomain and degenerate to zero on the subdomain when a parameter tends to zero. We will prove that the eigenvalues approach eigenvalues of the Laplacian on the subdomain or on the complement. We will obtain precise asymptotic behavior of their convergence.  相似文献
