Summary. In this paper we design high-order local artificial boundary conditions and present error bounds for the finite element approximation of an incompressible elastic material in an unbounded domain. The finite element approximation is formulated in a bounded computational domain using a nonlocal approximate artificial boundary condition or a local one. In fact there are a family of nonlocal approximate artificial boundary conditions with increasing accuracy (and computational cost) and a family of local ones for a given artificial boundary. Our error bounds indicate how the errors of the finite element approximations depend on the mesh size, the terms used in the approximate artificial boundary condition and the location of the artificial boundary. Numerical examples of an incompressible elastic material outside a circle in the plane is presented. Numerical results demonstrate the performance of our error bounds. A sensitive issue in numerical calculations for exterior flow problems, e.g.around airfoils, is the treatment of the far field boundary conditions on a computational domain which is bounded. In this paper we investigate this problem for two-dimensional transonic potential flows with subsonic far field flow around airfoil profiles. We take the artificial far field boundary in the subsonic flow region. In the far field we approximate the subsonic potential flow by the Prandtl-Glauert linearization. The latter leads via the Green representation theorem to a boundary integral equation on the far field boundary. This defines a nonlocal boundary condition for the interior ring domain. Our approach leads naturally to a coupled finite element/boundary element method for numerical calculations. It is compared with local boundary conditions. The error analysis for the method is given and we prove convergence provided the solution to the analytic transonic flow problem around the profile exists.

In this paper we design high-order (non)local artificial boundaryconditions (ABCs) which are different from those proposed byHan, H. & Bao, W. (1997 Numer. Math., 77, 347–363)for incompressible materials, and present error bounds for thefinite-element approximation of the exterior Stokes equationsin two dimensions. The finite-element approximation (especiallyits corresponding stiff matrix) becomes much simpler (sparser)when it is formulated in a bounded computational domain usingthe new (non)local approximate ABCs. Our error bounds indicatehow the errors of the finite-element approximations depend onthe mesh size, terms used in the approximate ABCs and the locationof the artificial boundary. Numerical examples of the exteriorStokes equations outside a circle in the plane are presented.Numerical results demonstrate the performance of our error bounds.  相似文献

The exact boundary condition on a spherical artificial boundary is derived for thethree-dimensional exterior problem of linear elasticity in this paper. After this bound-ary condition is imposed on the artificial boundary, a reduced problem only defined in abounded domain is obtained. A series of approximate problems with increasing accuracycan be derived if one truncates the series term in the variational formulation, which isequivalent to the reduced problem. An error estimate is presented to show how the errordepends on the finite element discretization and the accuracy of the approximate problem. In the end, a numerical example is given to demonstrate the performance of the proposedmethod.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with a class of fourth-order nonlinear elliptic equations with nonlocal boundary conditions, including a multi-point boundary condition in a bounded domain of Rn. Also considered is a second-order elliptic equation with nonlocal boundary condition, and the usual multi-point boundary problem in ordinary differential equations. The aim of the paper is to show the existence of maximal and minimal solutions, the uniqueness of a positive solution, and the method of construction for these solutions. Our approach to the above problems is by the method of upper and lower solutions and its associated monotone iterations. The monotone iterative schemes can be developed into computational algorithms for numerical solutions of the problem by either the finite difference method or the finite element method.  相似文献

Summary The finite element method with non-uniform mesh sizes is employed to approximately solve Helmholtz type equations in unbounded domains. The given problem on an unbounded domain is replaced by an approximate problem on a bounded domain with the radiation condition replaced by an approximate radiation boundary condition on the artificial boundary. This approximate problem is then solved using the finite element method with the mesh graded systematically in such a way that the element mesh sizes are increased as the distance from the origin increases. This results in a great reduction in the number of equations to be solved. It is proved that optimal error estimates hold inL 2,H 1 andL , provided that certain relationships hold between the frequency, mesh size and outer radius.  相似文献

In this paper, we apply the boundary integral method to the linearized rotating Navier-Stokes equations in exterior domain. Introducing some open ball which decomposes the exterior domain into a finite domain and an infinite domain, we obtain a coupled problem by the linearized rotating Navier-Stokes equations in finite domain and a boundary integral equation without using the artificial boundary condition. For the coupled problem, we show the existence and uniqueness of solution. Finally, we study the finite element approximation for the coupled problem and obtain the error estimate between the solution of the coupled problem and its approximation solution.  相似文献

The nonlinear grating problem is modeled by Maxwell's equations with transparent boundary conditions. The nonlocal boundary operators are truncated by taking sufficiently many terms in the corresponding expansions. A finite element method with the truncation operators is developed for solving the nonlinear grating problem. The two posterior error estimates are established. The a posterior error estimate consists of two parts: finite element discretization error and the truncation error of the nonlocal boundary operators. In particular, the truncation error caused by truncation operations is exponentially decayed when the parameter N is increased. Numerical experiment is included to illustrate the efficiency of the method. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq 31: 1101–1118, 2015  相似文献

On a three–dimensional exterior domain Ω we consider the Dirichlet problem for the stationary Navier–Stokes system. We construct an approximation problem on the domain ΩR, which is the intersection of Ω with a sufficiently large ball, while we create nonlinear, but local artificial boundary conditions on the truncation boundary. We prove existence and uniqueness of the solutions to the approximating problem together with asymptotically precise pointwise error estimates as R tends to infinity.  相似文献

In this paper, the numerical solutions of heat equation on 3-D unbounded spatial do-main are considered. n artificial boundary Γ is introduced to finite the computationaldomain. On the artificial boundary Γ,the exact boundary condition and a series of approx-imating boundary conditions are derived, which are called artificial boundary conditions.By the exact or approximating boundary condition on the artificial boundary, the originalproblem is reduced to an initial-boundary value problem on the bounded computationaldomain, which is equivalent or approximating to the original problem. The finite differencemethod and finite element method are used to solve the reduced problems on the finitecomputational domain. The numerical results demonstrate that the method given in thispaper is effective and feasible.  相似文献

A finite element method for the solution of Oseen equation in exterior domain is proposed. In this method, a circular artificial boundary is introduced to make the computational domain finite. Then, the exact relation between the normal stress and the prescribed velocity field on the artificial boundary can be obtained analytically. This relation can serve as an boundary condition for the boundary value problem defined on the finite domain bounded by the artificial boundary. Numerical experiment is presented to demonstrate the performance of the method.  相似文献

In this paper, we represent a new numerical method for solving the steady-state Stokes equations in an unbounded plane domain. The technique consists in coupling the boundary integral and the finite element methods. An artificial smooth boundary is introduced separating an interior inhomogeneous region from an exterior one. The solution in the exterior domain is represented by an integral equation over the artificial boundary. This integral equation is incorporated into a velocitypressure formulation for the interior region, and a finite element method is used to approximate the resulting variational problem. This is studied by means of an abstract framework, well adapted to the model problem, in which convergence results and optimal error estimates are derived. Computer results will be discussed in a forthcoming paper.  相似文献

We consider the numerical approximations of the three-dimensional steady potential flow around a body moving in a liquid of finite constant depth at constant speed and distance below a free surface in a channel. One vertical side is introduced as the up-stream artificial boundary and two vertical sides are introduced as the downstream arti-ficial boundaries. On the artificial boundaries, a sequence of high-order global artificial boundary conditions are given. Then the original problem is reduced to a problem defined on a finite computational domain, which is equivalent to a variational problem. After solving the variational problem by the finite element method, we obtain the numerical approximation of the original problem. The numerical examples show that the artificial boundary conditions given in this paper are very effective.  相似文献

We analyze the finite element approximation of the spectral problem for the linear elasticity equation with mixed boundary conditions on a curved non-convex domain. In the framework of the abstract spectral approximation theory, we obtain optimal order error estimates for the approximation of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Two kinds of problems are considered: the discrete domain does not coincide with the real one and mixed boundary conditions are imposed. Some numerical results are presented.  相似文献

We consider the equations of stationary incompressible magnetohydrodynamics posed in three dimensions, and treat the full coupled system of equations with inhomogeneous boundary conditions. We prove the existence of solutions without any conditions on the data. Also we discuss a finite element discretization and prove the existence of a discrete solution, again without any conditions on the data. Finally, we derive error estimates for the nonlinear case.

The steady three-dimensional exterior flow of a viscoelastic non-Newtonian fluid is approximated by reducing the corresponding nonlinear elliptic–hyperbolic system to a bounded domain. On the truncation surface with a large radius R, nonlinear, local second-order artificial boundary conditions are constructed and a new concept of an artificial transport equation is introduced. Although the asymptotic structure of solutions at infinity is known, certain attributes cannot be found explicitly so that the artificial boundary conditions must be constructed with incomplete information on asymptotics. To show the existence of a solution to the approximation problem and to estimate the asymptotic precision, a general abstract scheme, adapted to the analysis of coupled systems of elliptic–hyperbolic type, is proposed. The error estimates, obtained in weighted Sobolev norms with arbitrarily large smoothness indices, prove an approximation of order O(R−2+ε), with any ε>0. Our approach, in contrast to other papers on artificial boundary conditions, does not use the standard assumptions on compactly supported right-hand side f, leads, in particular, to pointwise estimates and provides error bounds with constants independent of both R and f. We study spatially semidiscrete and fully discrete two-scale composite finite element method for approximations of the nonlinear parabolic equations with homogeneous Dirich-let boundary conditions in a convex polygonal domain in the plane. This new class of finite elements, which is called composite finite elements, was first introduced by Hackbusch and Sauter[Numer.Math.,75(1997),pp.447-472]for the approximation of partial differential equations on domains with complicated geometry. The aim of this paper is to introduce an efficient numerical method which gives a lower dimensional approach for solving par-tial differential equations by domain discretization method. The composite finite element method introduces two-scale grid for discretization of the domain, the coarse-scale and the fine-scale grid with the degrees of freedom lies on the coarse-scale grid only. While the fine-scale grid is used to resolve the Dirichlet boundary condition, the dimension of the finite element space depends only on the coarse-scale grid.As a consequence, the resulting linear system will have a fewer number of unknowns.A continuous, piecewise linear composite finite element space is employed for the space discretization whereas the time discretization is based on both the backward Euler and the Crank-Nicolson methods. We have derived the error estimates in the L∞(L2)-norm for both semidiscrete and fully discrete schemes. Moreover, numerical simulations show that the proposed method is an efficient method to provide a good approximate solution.  相似文献
