The problem of constructing a spanning tree for a graph G = (V, E) with n vertices whose maximal degree is the smallest among all spanning trees of G is considered. This problem is easily shown to be NP-hard. In the Steiner version of this problem, along with the input graph, a set of distinguished vertices D V is given. A minimum-degree Steiner tree is a tree of minimum degree which spans at least the set D. Iterative polynomial time approximation algorithms for the problems are given. The algorithms compute trees whose maximal degree is at most Δ* + 1, where Δ* is the degree of some optimal tree for the respective problems. Unless P = NP, this is the best bound achievable in polynomial time.  相似文献

We consider a large-scale directed graph G = (V, E) whose edges are endowed with a family of characteristics. A subset of vertices of the graph, V′ ⊂ V, is selected and some additional conditions are imposed on these vertices. An algorithm for reducing the optimization problem on the graph G to an optimization problem on the graph G′ = (V′, E′) of a lower dimension is developed. The main steps of the solution and some methods for constructing an approximate solution to the problem on the transformed graph G′ are presented.__________Translated from Fundamentalnaya i Prikladnaya Matematika, Vol. 9, No. 1, pp. 235–251, 2003.  相似文献

Given an undirected graph and an integer , we consider the problem of augmenting G by a minimum set of new edges so that the diameter becomes at most D. It is known that no constant factor approximation algorithms to this problem with an arbitrary graph G can be obtained unless , while the problem with only a few graph classes such as forests is approximable within a constant factor. In this article, we give the first constant factor approximation algorithm to the problem with an outerplanar graph G. We also show that if the target diameter D is even, then the case where G is a partial 2‐tree is also approximable within a constant.  相似文献

The achromatic number for a graph G = V, E is the largest integer m such that there is a partition of V into disjoint independent sets {V1, …, Vm} such that for each pair of distinct sets Vi, Vj, Vi Vj is not an independent set in G. Yannakakis and Gavril (1980, SIAM J. Appl. Math.38, 364–372) proved that determining this value for general graphs is NP-complete. For n-vertex graphs we present the first o(n) approximation algorithm for this problem. We also present an O(n5/12) approximation algorithm for graphs with girth at least 5 and a constant approximation algorithm for trees.  相似文献

A vertex of a graph is said to dominate itself and all of its neighbors.A double dominating set of a graph G is a set D of vertices of G,such that every vertex of G is dominated by at least two vertices of D.The double domination number of a graph G is the minimum cardinality of a double dominating set of G.For a graph G =(V,E),a subset D V(G) is a 2-dominating set if every vertex of V(G) \ D has at least two neighbors in D,while it is a 2-outer-independent dominating set of G if additionally the set V(G)\D is independent. The 2-outer-independent domination number of G is the minimum cardinality of a 2-outer-independent dominating set of G.This paper characterizes all trees with the double domination number equal to the 2-outer-independent domination number plus one.  相似文献

The odd girth of a graph G gives the length of a shortest odd cycle in G. Let ƒ(k, g) denote the smallest n such that there exists a k-regular graph of order n and odd girth g. It is known that ƒ(k, g) ≥ kg/2 and that ƒ(k, g) = kg/2 if k is even. The exact values of ƒ(k, g) are also known if k = 3 or g = 5. Let xe denote the smallest even integer no less than x, δ(g) = (−1)g − 1/2, and s(k) = min {p + q | k = pq, where p and q are both positive integers}. It is proved that if k ≥ 5 and g ≥ 7 are both odd, then [formula] with the exception that ƒ(5, 7) = 20.  相似文献

Let G be an edge-colored graph. The monochromatic tree partition problem is to find the minimum number of vertex disjoint monochromatic trees to cover the all vertices of G. In the authors’ previous work, it has been proved that the problem is NP-complete and there does not exist any constant factor approximation algorithm for it unless P = NP. In this paper the authors show that for any fixed integer r ≥ 5, if the edges of a graph G are colored by r colors, called an r-edge-colored graph, the problem remains NP-complete. Similar result holds for the monochromatic path (cycle) partition problem. Therefore, to find some classes of interesting graphs for which the problem can be solved in polynomial time seems interesting. A linear time algorithm for the monochromatic path partition problem for edge-colored trees is given. Let G=(V,E) be a graph without an isolated vertex. A set DV(G) is a total dominating set if D is dominating, and the induced subgraph G[D] does not contain an isolated vertex. The total domination number of G is the minimum cardinality of a total dominating set of G. A set DV(G) is a total outer-connected dominating set if D is total dominating, and the induced subgraph G[V(G)−D] is a connected graph. The total outer-connected domination number of G is the minimum cardinality of a total outer-connected dominating set of G. We characterize trees with equal total domination and total outer-connected domination numbers. We give a lower bound for the total outer-connected domination number of trees and we characterize the extremal trees.  相似文献

A vertex u in an undirected graph G = (V, E) is said to dominate all its adjacent vertices and itself. A subset D of V is a dominating set in G if every vertex in G is dominated by a vertex in D, and is a minimum dominating set in G if no other dominating set in G has fewer vertices than D. The domination number of G is the cardinality of a minimum dominating set in G.The problem of determining, for a given positive integer k and an undirected graph G, whether G has a dominating set D in G satisfying ¦D¦ ≤ k, is a well-known NP-complete problem. Cockayne have presented a linear time algorithm for finding a minimum dominating set in a tree. In this paper, we will present a linear time algorithm for finding a minimum dominating set in a series-parallel graph.  相似文献

For a bounded integer , we wish to color all edges of a graph G so that any two edges within distance have different colors. Such a coloring is called a distance-edge-coloring or an -edge-coloring of G. The distance-edge-coloring problem is to compute the minimum number of colors required for a distance-edge-coloring of a given graph G. A partial k-tree is a graph with tree-width bounded by a fixed constant k. We first present a polynomial-time exact algorithm to solve the problem for partial k-trees, and then give a polynomial-time 2-approximation algorithm for planar graphs.  相似文献
