Let be a local, Noetherian ring and an ideal. A question of Kodiyalam asks whether for fixed , the polynomial giving the th Betti number of has degree equal to the analytic spread of minus one. Under mild conditions on , we show that the answer is positive in a number of cases, including when is divisible by or is an integrally closed -primary ideal.

For a finitely generated, non-free module over a CM local ring , it is proved that for the length of is given by a polynomial of degree . The vanishing of is studied, with a view towards answering the question: If there exists a finitely generated -module with such that the projective dimension or the injective dimension of is finite, then is regular? Upper bounds are provided for beyond which the question has an affirmative answer.

We consider the three-point loop algebra,

In this note, we give a presentation for via generators and relations, which highlights a certain symmetry over the alternating group . Let be an Archimedean vector lattice, let be its Dedekind completion and let be a Dedekind complete vector lattice. If is an orthosymmetric lattice bimorphism, then there exists a lattice bimorphism that not just extends but also has to be orthosymmetric. As an application, we prove the following: Let be an Archimedean -algebra. Then the multiplication in can be extended to a multiplication in , the Dedekind completion of , in such a fashion that is again a -algebra with respect to this extended multiplication. This gives a positive answer to the problem posed by C. B. Huijsmans in 1990.

Let be a finite-dimensional complex Lie algebra, and let be its universal enveloping algebra. We prove that if , the Arens-Michael envelope of is stably flat over (i.e., if the canonical homomorphism is a localization in the sense of Taylor (1972), then is solvable. To this end, given a cocommutative Hopf algebra and an -module algebra , we explicitly describe the Arens-Michael envelope of the smash product as an ``analytic smash product' of their completions w.r.t. certain families of seminorms.

In this note it is shown that, given a smooth minimal complex surface of general type with , , for which the bicanonical map is a morphism, the degree of is not 3. This completes our earlier results, showing that if is a minimal surface of general type with , such that is free, then the bicanonical map of can have degree 1, 2 or 4.

In addition, we prove that the postulation numbers of the components with respect to have a common upper bound.

Let be a commutative ring with identity and an -module. It is shown that if is pure injective, then is isomorphic to a direct summand of the direct product of a family of finitely embedded modules. As a result, it follows that if is Noetherian, then is pure injective if and only if is isomorphic to a direct summand of the direct product of a family of Artinian modules. Moreover, it is proved that is pure injective if and only if there is a family of -algebras which are finitely presented as -modules, such that is isomorphic to a direct summand of a module of the form , where for each , is an injective -module.

Given the disk algebra and an automorphism , there is associated a non-self-adjoint operator algebra called the semicrossed product of with . Buske and Peters showed that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the contractive Hilbert modules over and pairs of contractions and on satisfying . In this paper, we show that the orthogonally projective and Shilov Hilbert modules over correspond to pairs of isometries on satisfying .
