In this article, the standard primal and dual linear semi-infinite programming (DLSIP) problems are reformulated as linear programming (LP) problems over cones. Therefore, the dual formulation via the minimal cone approach, which results in zero duality gap for the primal–dual pair for LP problems over cones, can be applied to linear semi-infinite programming (LSIP) problems. Results on the geometry of the set of the feasible solutions for the primal LSIP problem and the optimality criteria for the DLSIP problem are also discussed.  相似文献

We analyse the primal-dual states in linear semi-infinite programming (LSIP), where we consider the primal problem and the so called Haar's dual problem. Any linear programming problem and its dual can be classified as bounded, unbounded or inconsistent, giving rise to nine possible primal-dual states, which are reduced to six by the weak duality property. Recently, Goberna and Todorov have studied this partition and its stability in continuous LSIP in a series of papers [M.A. Goberna and M.I. Todorov, Primal, dual and primal-dual partitions in continuous linear semi-infinite programming, Optimization 56 (2007), pp. 617–628; M.A. Goberna and M.I. Todorov, Generic primal-dual solvability in continuous linear semi-infinite programming, Optimization 57 (2008), pp. 239–248]. In this article we consider the general case, with no continuity assumptions, discussing the maintenance of the primal-dual state of the problem by allowing small perturbations of the data. We characterize the stability of all of the six possible primal-dual states through necessary and sufficient conditions which depend on the data, and can be easily checked, showing some differences with the continuous case. These conditions involve the strong Slater constraint qualification, and some distinguished convex sets associated to the data.  相似文献

We consider semi-infinite linear programs with countably many constraints indexed by the natural numbers. When the constraint space is the vector space of all real valued sequences, we show that the finite support (Haar) dual is equivalent to the algebraic Lagrangian dual of the linear program. This settles a question left open by Anderson and Nash (1987). This result implies that if there is a duality gap between the primal linear program and its finite support dual, then this duality gap cannot be closed by considering the larger space of dual variables that define the algebraic Lagrangian dual. However, if the constraint space corresponds to certain subspaces of all real-valued sequences, there may be a strictly positive duality gap with the finite support dual, but a zero duality gap with the algebraic Lagrangian dual.  相似文献

Careful inspection of the geometry of the primal linear programming problem reveals the Kuhn-Tucker conditions as well as the dual. Many of the well-known special cases in duality are also seen from the geometry, as well as the complementary slackness conditions and shadow prices. The latter at demonstrated to differ from the dual variables in situations involving primal degeneracy. Virtually all the special relationships between linear programming and duality theory can be seen from the geometry of the primal and an elementary application of vector analysis.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the following minimax linear programming problem: min z = max1 ≤ jn{CjXj}, subject to Ax = g, x ≥ 0. It is well known that this problem can be transformed into a linear program by introducing n additional constraints. We note that these additional constraints can be considered implicitly by treating them as parametric upper bounds. Based on this approach we develop two algorithms: a parametric algorithm and a primal—dual algorithm. The parametric algorithm solves a linear programming problem with parametric upper bounds and the primal—dual algorithm solves a sequence of related dual feasible linear programming problems. Computation results are also presented, which indicate that both the algorithms are substantially faster than the simplex algorithm applied to the enlarged linear programming problem.  相似文献

In this paper, we provide a systematic approach to the main topics in linear semi-infinite programming by means of a new methodology based on the many properties of the sub-differential mapping and the closure of a given convex function. In particular, we deal with the duality gap problem and its relation to the discrete approximation of the semi-infinite program. Moreover, we have made precise the conditions that allow us to eliminate the duality gap by introducing a perturbation in the primal objective function. As a by-product, we supply different extensions of well-known results concerning the subdifferential mapping.  相似文献

When the terms in a convex primal geometric programming (GP) problem are multiplied by slack variables whose values must be at least unity, the invariance conditions may be solved as constraints in a linear programming (LP) problem in logarithmically transformed variables. The number of transformed slack variables included in the optimal LP basis equals the degree of difficulty of the GP problem, and complementary slackness conditions indicate required changes in associated GP dual variables. A simple, efficient search procedure is used to generate a sequence of improving primal feasible solutions without requiring the use of the GP dual objective function. The solution procedure appears particularly advantageous when solving very large geometric programming problems, because only the right-hand constants in a system of linear equations change at each iteration.The influence of J. We develop a duality theory for minimax fractional programming problems in the face of data uncertainty both in the objective and constraints. Following the framework of robust optimization, we establish strong duality between the robust counterpart of an uncertain minimax convex–concave fractional program, termed as robust minimax fractional program, and the optimistic counterpart of its uncertain conventional dual program, called optimistic dual. In the case of a robust minimax linear fractional program with scenario uncertainty in the numerator of the objective function, we show that the optimistic dual is a simple linear program when the constraint uncertainty is expressed as bounded intervals. We also show that the dual can be reformulated as a second-order cone programming problem when the constraint uncertainty is given by ellipsoids. In these cases, the optimistic dual problems are computationally tractable and their solutions can be validated in polynomial time. We further show that, for robust minimax linear fractional programs with interval uncertainty, the conventional dual of its robust counterpart and the optimistic dual are equivalent.  相似文献

Consider a linear programming problem in Karmarkar's standard form. By perturbing its linear objective function with an entropic barrier function and applying generalized geometric programming theory to it, Fang recently proposed an unconstrained convex programming approach to finding an epsilon-optimal solution. In this paper, we show that Fang's derivation of an unconstrained convex dual program can be greatly simplified by using only one simple geometric inequality. In addition, a system of nonlinear equations, which leads to a pair of primal and dual epsilon-optimal solutions, is proposed for further investigation.This work was partially supported by the North Carolina Supercomputing Center and a 1990 Cray Research Grant. In order to study the behavior of interior-point methods on very large-scale linear programming problems, we consider the application of such methods to continuous semi-infinite linear programming problems in both primal and dual form. By considering different discretizations of such problems we are led to a certain invariance property for (finite-dimensional) interior-point methods. We find that while many methods are invariant, several, including all those with the currently best complexity bound, are not. We then devise natural extensions of invariant methods to the semi-infinite case. Our motivation comes from our belief that for a method to work well on large-scale linear programming problems, it should be effective on fine discretizations of a semi-infinite problem and it should have a natural extension to the limiting semi-infinite case.Research supported in part by NSF, AFORS and ONR through NSF grant DMS-8920550.  相似文献

Many methods for solving mixed integer programming problems are based either on primal or on dual decomposition, which yield, respectively, a Benders decomposition algorithm and an implicit enumeration algorithm with bounds computed via Lagrangean relaxation. These methods exploit either the primal or the dual structure of the problem. We propose a new approach, cross decomposition, which allows exploiting simultaneously both structures. The development of the cross decomposition method captures profound relationships between primal and dual decomposition. It is shown that the more constraints can be included in the Langrangean relaxation (provided the duality gap remains zero), the fewer the Benders cuts one may expect to need. If the linear programming relaxation has no duality gap, only one Benders cut is needed to verify optimality.  相似文献

Geometric programming is based on functions called posynomials, the terms of which are log-linear. This class of programs is extended from the composition of an exponential and a linear function to an exponential and a convex function. The resulting duality theory for composite geometric programs retains many of the qualities of geometric programming duality, while at the same time encompassing new areas of application. As an application, composite geometric programming is applied to exponential geometric programming. The theme of this paper is the application of linear analysis to simplify and extend convex analysis. The central problem treated is the standard convex program — minimize a convex function subject to inequality constraints on other convex functions. The present approach uses the support planes of the constraint region to transform the convex program into an equivalent linear program. Then the duality theory of infinite linear programming shows how to construct a new dual program of bilinear type. When this dual program is transformed back into the convex function formulation it concerns the minimax of an unconstrained Lagrange function. This result is somewhat similar to the Kuhn—Tucker theorem. The zero duality gap that underpins the duality theory is one of the central ingredients in optimisation. In convex programming, it means that the optimal values of a given convex program and its associated dual program are equal. It allows, in particular, the development of efficient numerical schemes. However, the zero duality gap property does not always hold even for finite-dimensional problems and it frequently fails for problems with non-polyhedral constraints such as the ones in semidefinite programming problems. Over the years, various criteria have been developed ensuring zero duality gaps for convex programming problems. In the present work, we take a broader view of the zero duality gap property by allowing it to hold for each choice of linear perturbation of the objective function of the given problem. Globalising the property in this way permits us to obtain complete geometric dual characterisations of a stable zero duality gap in terms of epigraphs and conjugate functions. For convex semidefinite programs, we establish necessary and sufficient dual conditions for stable zero duality gaps, as well as for a universal zero duality gap in the sense that the zero duality gap property holds for each choice of constraint right-hand side and convex objective function. Zero duality gap results for second-order cone programming problems are also given. Our approach makes use of elegant conjugate analysis and Fenchel's duality.  相似文献

In this paper, primal and dual cutting plane algorithms for the solution of posynomial geometric programming problems are presented. It is shown that these cuts are deepest, in the sense that they cut off as much of the infeasible set as possible. Problems of nondifferentiability in the dual cutting plane are circumvented by the use of a subgradient. Although the resulting dual problem seems easier to solve, the computational experience seems to show that the primal cutting plane outperforms the dual.  相似文献

It is known that the minimal cone for the constraint system of a conic linear programming problem is a key component in obtaining strong duality without any constraint qualification. For problems in either primal or dual form, the minimal cone can be written down explicitly in terms of the problem data. However, due to possible lack of closure, explicit expressions for the dual cone of the minimal cone cannot be obtained in general. In the particular case of semidefinite programming, an explicit expression for the dual cone of the minimal cone allows for a dual program of polynomial size that satisfies strong duality. In this paper we develop a recursive procedure to obtain the minimal cone and its dual cone. In particular, for conic problems with so-called nice cones, we obtain explicit expressions for the cones involved in the dual recursive procedure. As an example of this approach, the well-known duals that satisfy strong duality for semidefinite programming problems are obtained. The relation between this approach and a facial reduction algorithm is also discussed.  相似文献

In this article, we study semi-definite and semi-infinite programming problems (SDSIP), which includes semi-infinite linear programs and semi-definite programs as special cases. We establish that a uniform duality between the homogeneous (SDSIP) and its Lagrangian-type dual problem is equivalent to the closedness condition of certain cone. Moreover, this closedness condition was assured by a generalized canonically closedness condition and a Slater condition. Corresponding results for the nonhomogeneous (SDSIP) problem were obtained by transforming it into an equivalent homogeneous (SDSIP) problem.  相似文献

In this paper we present two approaches to duality in multiple objective linear programming. The first approach is based on a duality relation between maximal elements of a set and minimal elements of its complement. It offers a general duality scheme which unifies a number of known dual constructions and improves several existing duality relations. The second approach utilizes polarity between a convex polyhedral set and the epigraph of its support function. It leads to a parametric dual problem and yields strong duality relations, including those of geometric duality.  相似文献

We consider the class of linear programs with infinitely many variables and constraints having the property that every constraint contains at most finitely many variables while every variable appears in at most finitely many constraints. Examples include production planning and equipment replacement over an infinite horizon. We form the natural dual linear programming problem and prove strong duality under a transversality condition that dual prices are asymptotically zero. That is, we show, under this transversality condition, that optimal solutions are attained in both primal and dual problems and their optimal values are equal. The stochastic linear programming problem with recourse has a dual block-angular structure. It can thus be handled by Benders' decomposition or by Kelley's method of cutting planes; equivalently the dual problem has a primal block-angular structure and can be handled by Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition—the two approaches are in fact identical by duality. Here we shall investigate the use of the method of cutting planes from analytic centers applied to similar formulations.
