In this paper we study the preservation of strong stability of strongly continuous semigroups on Hilbert spaces. In particular, we study a situation where the generator of the semigroup has a finite number of spectral points on the imaginary axis and the norm of its resolvent operator is polynomially bounded near these points. We characterize classes of perturbations preserving the strong stability of the semigroup. In addition, we improve recent results on preservation of polynomial stability of a semigroup under perturbations of its generator. Theoretic results are illustrated with an example where we consider the preservation of the strong stability of a multiplication semigroup.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the stability properties of strongly continuous semigroups generated by block operator matrices. We consider triangular and full operator matrices whose diagonal operator blocks generate polynomially stable semigroups. As our main results, we present conditions under which also the semigroup generated by the operator matrix is polynomially stable. The theoretical results are used to derive conditions for the polynomial stability of a system consisting of a two-dimensional and a one-dimensional damped wave equation.  相似文献

The left regular band structure on a hyperplane arrangement and its representation theory provide an important connection between semigroup theory and algebraic combinatorics. A finite semigroup embeds in a real hyperplane face monoid if and only if it is in the quasivariety generated by the monoid obtained by adjoining an identity to the two-element left zero semigroup. We prove that this quasivariety is on the one hand polynomial time decidable, and on the other minimally non-finitely based. A similar result is obtained for the semigroups embeddable in complex hyperplane semigroups.  相似文献

We define a closure operation on semigroups of matrices over a skew field, and show that a semigroup of matrices can be (upper) triangularized if and only if its closure can be. We then give necessary and sufficient conditions for a closed semigroup to be triangularizable.  相似文献

We study self-adjoint semigroups of partial isometries on a Hilbert space. These semigroups coincide precisely with faithful representations of abstract inverse semigroups. Groups of unitary operators are specialized examples of self-adjoint semigroups of partial isometries. We obtain a general structure result showing that every self-adjoint semigroup of partial isometries consists of “generalized weighted composition” operators on a space of square-integrable Hilbert-space valued functions. If the semigroup is finitely generated then the underlying measure space is purely atomic, so that the semigroup is represented as “zero-unitary” matrices. The same is true if the semigroup contains a compact operator, in which case it is not even required that the semigroup be self-adjoint.  相似文献

We consider semigroup S of a rank 1 valuation ? centered on a local ring R. We show that the Hilbert polynomial of R gives a bound on the growth of the valuation semigroup S. This allows us to give a very simple example of a well ordered subsemigroup of Q+, which is not a value semigroup of a local domain. We also consider the rates of growth which are possible for S. We show that quite exotic behavior can occur. In the final section, we consider the general question of characterizing rank 1 value semigroups.  相似文献

In this paper, using the notion of "Cauchy sequences", we study the injectivity of acts over left zero semigroups, and give some equivalent conditions to it. We see that Baer criterion is true if an identity is adjoined to the semigroup. Further, we find injective hulls of acts over left zero semigroups. We hope that the technique used here will be useful to study injectivity of acts over some other more general semigroups.  相似文献

We deal with a general streaming semigroup arising in transport theory. We show that in general such a semigroup has a direct decomposition into three simpler semigroups one of which extends to a group. A general spectral theory of them is given and is partly derived from that of a class of positive semigroups on Banach lattices.  相似文献

Every inverse semigroup possesses a natural partial order and therefore convexity with respect to this order is of interest. We study the extent to which an inverse semigroup is determined by its lattice of convex inverse subsemigroups; that is, if the lattices of two inverse semigroups are isomorphic, how are the semigroups related? We solve this problem completely for semilattices and for inverse semigroups in general reduce it to the case where the lattice isomorphism induces an isomorphism between the semilattices of idempotents of the semigroups. For many inverse semigroups, such as the monogenic ones, this case is the only one that can occur. In Part II, a study of the reduced case enables us to prove that many inverse semigroups, such as the free ones, are strictly determined by their lattices of convex inverse subsemigroups, and to show that the answer obtained here for semilattices can be extended to a broad class of inverse semigroups, including all finite, aperiodic ones. The variety of guarded semigroups consists of all (S,·, ˉ) where (S,·) is a semigroup and x ↦ \overline{x} is a unary operation subject to four additional equations relating it to multiplication. The semigroup Pfn(X) of all partial transformations on X is a guarded semigroup if x \overline{f} = x when xf is defined and is undefined otherwise. Every guarded semigroup is a subalgebra of Pfn(X) for some X. A covering theorem of McAlister type is obtained. Free guarded semigroups are constructed paralleling Scheiblich's construction of free inverse semigroups. The variety of banded semigroups has the same signature but different equations. There is a canonical forgetful functor from guarded semigroups to banded semigroups. A semigroup underlies a banded semigroup if and only if it is a split strong semilattice of right zero semigroups. Each banded semigroup S contains a canonical subsemilattice g(S). For any given semilattice L, a construction to synthesize the general banded semigroup S with g ≅ L is obtained.  相似文献

In this paper we investigate the structure of semigroups with the ideal retraction property i.e., semigroups which are not simple and have the property that each ideal is a homomorphic retract of the semigroup. We present examples to show that the ideal retraction property is neither hereditary nor productive. That this property is preserved by homomorphisms is established for some classes of semigroups, but the general question remains open. The classes of semigroups investigated in this paper are separative semigroups, ideal semigroups, semilattices, cyclic semigroups, nil semigroups, and Clifford semigroups. It is established that a semigroup with zero 0 which is expressible as a direct sum of each ideal and a dual ideal (complement with 0 adjoined) has the ideal retraction property. The converse holds for ideal semigroups, and an example is presented which demonstrates that the converse does not hold in general.  相似文献

We study the character amenability of semigroup algebras. We work on general semigroups and certain semigroups such as inverse semigroups with a finite number of idempotents, inverse semigroups with uniformly locally finite idempotent set, Brandt and Rees semigroup and study the character amenability of the semigroup algebra l1(S) in relation to the structures of the semigroup S. In particular, we show that for any semigroup S, if ?1(S) is character amenable, then S is amenable and regular. We also show that the left character amenability of the semigroup algebra ?1(S) on a Brandt semigroup S over a group G with index set J is equivalent to the amenability of G and J being finite. Finally, we show that for a Rees semigroup S with a zero over the group G, the left character amenability of ?1(S) is equivalent to its amenability, this is in turn equivalent to G being amenable.  相似文献

A filter in a semigroup is a subsemigroup whose complement is an ideal. (Alternatively, in a quasiordered semigroup, a slightly more general definition can be given.) We prove a number of results related to filters in a semigroup and the lattice of filters of a semigroup. For instance, we prove that every complete algebraic lattice can be the lattice of filters of a semigroup. We prove that every finite semigroup is a homomorphic image of a finite semigroup whose lattice of filters is boolean and which belongs to the pseudovariety generated by the original semigroup. We describe filter lattices of some well-known semigroups such as full transformation semigroups of finite sets (which are three-element chains) and free semigroups (which are boolean).  相似文献

An orthodox semigroup S is called a left [right] inverse semigroup if the set of idempotents of S satisfies the identity xyx=xy [xyx=yx]. Bisimple left [right] inverse semigroups have been studied by Venkatesan [6]. In this paper, we clarify the structure of general left [right] inverse semigroups. Further, we also investigate the structure of orthodox semigroups whose idempotents satisfy the identity xyxzx=xyzx. In particular, it is shown that the set of idempotents of an orthodox semigroup S satisfies xyxzx=xyzx if and only if S is isomorphic to a subdirect product of a left inverse semigroup and a right inverse semigroup.  相似文献

We characterize the ordered semigroups which are decomposable into simple and regular components. We prove that each ordered semigroup which is both regular and intra-regular is decomposable into simple and regular semigroups, and the converse statement also holds. We also prove that an ordered semigroup S is both regular and intra-regular if and only if every bi-ideal of S is an intra-regular (resp. semisimple) subsemigroup of S. An ordered semigroup S is both regular and intra-regular if and only if the left (resp. right) ideals of S are right (resp. left) quasi-regular subsemigroups of S. We characterize the chains of simple and regular semigroups, and we prove that S is a complete semilattice of simple and regular semigroups if and only if S is a semilattice of simple and regular semigroups. While a semigroup which is both π-regular and intra-regular is a semilattice of simple and regular semigroups, this does not hold in ordered semigroups, in general.  相似文献
