We consider biorthogonal systems in quasi-Banach spaces such that the greedy algorithm converges for each xX (quasi-greedy systems). We construct quasi-greedy conditional bases in a wide range of Banach spaces. We also compare the greedy algorithm for the multidimensional Haar system with the optimal m-term approximation for this system. This substantiates a conjecture by Temlyakov.  相似文献

We study the approximation of a subset K in a Banach space X by choosing first basis B and then using n-term approximation. Into the competition for best bases we enter all unconditional bases for X. We show that if the subset KX is well aligned with respect to a greedy basis B, then, in a certain sense, this basis is the best for this type of approximation. Our result improves the recent result of DeVore, Petrova and Temlyakov.   相似文献

The paper deals with the approximation of bounded real functions f on a compact metric space (X, d) by so-called controllable step functions in continuation of [Ri/Ste]. These step functions are connected with controllable coverings, that are finite coverings of compact metric spaces by subsets whose sizes fulfil a uniformity condition depending on the entropy numbers εn(X) of the space X. We show that a strong form of local finiteness holds for these coverings on compact metric subspaces of IRm and Sm. This leads to a Bernstein type theorem if the space is of finite convex information. In this case the corresponding approximation numbers εn(f) have the same asymptotics its ω(f, εn(X)) for f ε C(X). Finally, the results concerning functions f ε M(X) and f ε C(X) are transferred to operators with values in M(X) and C(X), respectively.  相似文献

Restricted non linear approximation is a generalization of the N‐term approximation in which a measure on the index set of the approximants controls the type, instead of the number, of elements in the approximation. Thresholding is a well‐known type of non linear approximation. We relate a generalized upper and lower Temlyakov property with the decreasing rate of the thresholding approximation. This relation is in the form of a characterization through some general discrete Lorentz spaces. Thus, not only we recover some results in the literature but find new ones. As an application of these results, we compress and reduce noise of some images with wavelets and shearlets and show, at least empirically, that the L2‐norm is not necessarily the best norm to measure the approximation error.  相似文献

Near Best Tree Approximation   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Tree approximation is a form of nonlinear wavelet approximation that appears naturally in applications such as image compression and entropy encoding. The distinction between tree approximation and the more familiar n-term wavelet approximation is that the wavelets appearing in the approximant are required to align themselves in a certain connected tree structure. This makes their positions easy to encode. Previous work [4,6] has established upper bounds for the error of tree approximation for certain (Besov) classes of functions. This paper, in contrast, studies tree approximation of individual functions with the aim of characterizing those functions with a prescribed approximation error. We accomplish this in the case that the approximation error is measured in L 2, or in the case p2, in the Besov spaces B p 0(L p ), which are close to (but not the same as) L p . Our characterization of functions with a prescribed approximation order in these cases is given in terms of a certain maximal function applied to the wavelet coefficients.  相似文献

In this paper, we continue studying the so-called non-linear best m-term one-sided approximation problems and obtain the asymptotic estimations of non-linear best m-term one-sided trigonometric approximation under the norm Lp (1 ≤ p ≤ ∞) of multiplier function classes and the corresponding m-term Greedy-liked one-sided trigonometric approximation results.  相似文献

We prove an extrapolation theorem for the nonlinear m-term approximation with respect to a system of functions satisfying very mild conditions. This theorem allows us to prove endpoint Lp-Lq estimates in nonlinear approximation. As a consequence, some known endpoint estimates can be deduced directly and some new estimates are also obtained. Finally, applications of these new estimates are given to spherical m-widths and m-term approximation of the weighted Besov classes.  相似文献

Abstract. Our main interest in this paper is nonlinear approximation. The basic idea behind nonlinear approximation is that the elements used in the approximation do not come from a fixed linear space but are allowed to depend on the function being approximated. While the scope of this paper is mostly theoretical, we should note that this form of approximation appears in many numerical applications such as adaptive PDE solvers, compression of images and signals, statistical classification, and so on. The standard problem in this regard is the problem of m -term approximation where one fixes a basis and looks to approximate a target function by a linear combination of m terms of the basis. When the basis is a wavelet basis or a basis of other waveforms, then this type of approximation is the starting point for compression algorithms. We are interested in the quantitative aspects of this type of approximation. Namely, we want to understand the properties (usually smoothness) of the function which govern its rate of approximation in some given norm (or metric). We are also interested in stable algorithms for finding good or near best approximations using m terms. Some of our earlier work has introduced and analyzed such algorithms. More recently, there has emerged another more complicated form of nonlinear approximation which we call highly nonlinear approximation. It takes many forms but has the basic ingredient that a basis is replaced by a larger system of functions that is usually redundant. Some types of approximation that fall into this general category are mathematical frames, adaptive pursuit (or greedy algorithms), and adaptive basis selection. Redundancy on the one hand offers much promise for greater efficiency in terms of approximation rate, but on the other hand gives rise to highly nontrivial theoretical and practical problems. With this motivation, our recent work and the current activity focuses on nonlinear approximation both in the classical form of m -term approximation (where several important problems remain unsolved) and in the form of highly nonlinear approximation where a theory is only now emerging.  相似文献

We investigate the efficiency of weak greedy algorithms for m-term expansional approximation with respect to quasi-greedy bases in general Banach spaces. We estimate the corresponding Lebesgue constants for the weak thresholding greedy algorithm(WTGA) and weak Chebyshev thresholding greedy algorithm. Then we discuss the greedy approximation on some function classes. For some sparse classes induced by uniformly bounded quasi-greedy bases of L_p,1p∞,we show that the WTGA realizes the order of the best m-term approximation. Finally,we compare the efficiency of the weak Chebyshev greedy algorithm(WCGA) with the thresholding greedy algorithm(TGA) when applying them to quasi-greedy bases in L_p,1≤p∞,by establishing the corresponding Lebesgue-type inequalities. It seems that when p2 the WCGA is better than the TGA.  相似文献

It is shown that for the separable dual X of a Banach space X if X has the weak approximation property, then X has the metric quasi approximation property. Using this it is shown that for the separable dual X of a Banach space X the quasi approximation property and metric quasi approximation property are inherited from X to X and for a separable and reflexive Banach space X, X having the weak approximation property, bounded weak approximation property, quasi approximation property, metric weak approximation property, and metric quasi approximation property are equivalent. Also it is shown that the weak approximation property, bounded weak approximation property, and quasi approximation property are not inherited from a Banach space X to X.  相似文献

We show that a Banach space E has the weakly compact approximation property if and only if each continuous Banach-valued polynomial on E can be uniformly approximated on compact sets by homogeneous polynomials which are members of the ideal of homogeneous polynomials generated by weakly compact linear operators. An analogous result is established also for the compact approximation property.  相似文献

In the general atomic setting of an unconditional basis in a (quasi-) Banach space, we show that representing the spaces of m-terms approximation as Lorentz spaces is equivalent to the verification of two inequalities (Jackson and Bernstein), and that the validity of these two properties is equivalent to the Temlyakov property. The proof is very direct and, especially, does not use interpolation theory. We apply this result to establish a representation theorem when the norm of the (quasi-) Banach space is given by a quadratic variation formula (thanks to a condition called the p-reverse inequality). This quadratic variation framework is in fact very rich and contains, as examples, the cases of Hardy spaces. We also consider the cases of "weighted" Hardy and Lebesgue spaces when the weight belongs to a Muckenhoupt class and the basis is a wavelet basis. This provides a new example of bases well adapted to approximation.  相似文献

It is shown that for the separable dual X of a Banach space X, if X has the weak approximation property, then X has the metric weak approximation property. We introduce the properties WD and MWD for Banach spaces. Suppose that M is a closed subspace of a Banach space X such that M is complemented in the dual space X, where for all mM}. Then it is shown that if a Banach space X has the weak approximation property and WD (respectively, metric weak approximation property and MWD), then M has the weak approximation property (respectively, bounded weak approximation property).  相似文献

We study the following nonlinear method of approximation by trigonometric polynomials in this paper. For a periodic function f we take as an approximant a trigonometric polynomial of the form , where is a set of cardinality m containing the indices of the m biggest (in absolute value) Fourier coefficients of function f . We compare the efficiency of this method with the best m -term trigonometric approximation both for individual functions and for some function classes. It turns out that the operator G m provides the optimal (in the sense of order) error of m -term trigonometric approximation in the L p -norm for many classes. September 23, 1996. The question of finding an optimal dictionary for nonlinear m -term approximation is studied in this paper. We consider this problem in the periodic multivariate (d variables) case for classes of functions with mixed smoothness. We prove that the well-known dictionary U d which consists of trigonometric polynomials (shifts of the Dirichlet kernels) is nearly optimal among orthonormal dictionaries. Next, it is established that for these classes near-best m -term approximation, with regard to U d , can be achieved by simple greedy-type (thresholding-type) algorithms. The univariate dictionary U is used to construct a dictionary which is optimal among dictionaries with the tensor product structure. June 22, 1998. Date revised: March 26, 1999. In an N-dimensional space, we consider the approximation of classes of translation-invariant periodic functions by a linear operator whose kernel is the product of two kernels one of which is positive. We establish that the least upper bound of this approximation does not exceed the sum of properly chosen least upper bounds in m-and ((Nm))-dimensional spaces. We also consider the cases where the inequality obtained turns into the equality. __________ Translated from Ukrains’kyi Matematychnyi Zhurnal, Vol. 58, No. 1, pp. 12–19, January, 2006.  相似文献

Integration and approximation in arbitrary dimensions   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13
We study multivariate integration and approximation for various classes of functions of d variables with arbitrary d. We consider algorithms that use function evaluations as the information about the function. We are mainly interested in verifying when integration and approximation are tractable and strongly tractable. Tractability means that the minimal number of function evaluations needed to reduce the initial error by a factor of ɛ is bounded by C(dp for some exponent p independent of d and some function C(d). Strong tractability means that C(d) can be made independent of d. The ‐exponents of tractability and strong tractability are defined as the smallest powers of ɛ{-1} in these bounds. We prove that integration is strongly tractable for some weighted Korobov and Sobolev spaces as well as for the Hilbert space whose reproducing kernel corresponds to the covariance function of the isotropic Wiener measure. We obtain bounds on the ‐exponents, and for some cases we find their exact values. For some weighted Korobov and Sobolev spaces, the strong ‐exponent is the same as the ‐exponent for d=1, whereas for the third space it is 2. For approximation we also consider algorithms that use general evaluations given by arbitrary continuous linear functionals as the information about the function. Our main result is that the ‐exponents are the same for general and function evaluations. This holds under the assumption that the orthonormal eigenfunctions of the covariance operator have uniformly bounded L∞ norms. This assumption holds for spaces with shift-invariant kernels. Examples of such spaces include weighted Korobov spaces. For a space with non‐shift‐invariant kernel, we construct the corresponding space with shift-invariant kernel and show that integration and approximation for the non-shift-invariant kernel are no harder than the corresponding problems with the shift-invariant kernel. If we apply this construction to a weighted Sobolev space, whose kernel is non-shift-invariant, then we obtain the corresponding Korobov space. This enables us to derive the results for weighted Sobolev spaces. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Restricted non-linear approximation is a type of N-term approximation where a measure ν on the index set (rather than the counting measure) is used to control the number of terms in the approximation. We show that embeddings for restricted non-linear approximation spaces in terms of weighted Lorentz sequence spaces are equivalent to Jackson and Bernstein type inequalities, and also to the upper and lower Temlyakov property. As applications we obtain results for wavelet bases in Triebel–Lizorkin spaces by showing the Temlyakov property in this setting. Moreover, new interpolation results for Triebel–Lizorkin and Besov spaces are obtained.  相似文献

Let Ω be a compact convex domain in and let L be a bounded linear operator that maps a subspace of C(Ω) into C(Ω). Suppose that L reproduces polynomials up to degree m. We show that for appropriately defined coefficients amrj the operator
reproduces polynomials up to degree m+r. This is an immediate consequence of the main result (Theorem 3.1) which provides an integral representation of the error f(x) − Hmr[f](x). Special emphasis is given to positive linear operators L. In this case, sharp error bounds are established (Theorem 4.4) and interpolation properties are pointed out (Theorem 4.5). We also discuss various classes of admissible operators L and show an interrelation (Theorem 5.1).   相似文献

In the present paper, we study nonlinear approximation properties of multivariate wavelet bi-frames. For a certain range of parameters, the approximation classes associated with best N-term approximation are determined to be Besov spaces and thresholding the wavelet bi-frame expansion realizes the approximation rate. Our findings extend results about dyadic wavelets to more general scalings. Finally, we verify that the required linear independence assumption is satisfied for particular families of nondyadic wavelet bi-frames in arbitrary dimensions.  相似文献
