This paper explicitly describes the procedure of associating an automorphic representation of PGSp(2n,?) with a Siegel modular form of degree n for the full modular group Γ n =Sp(2n,ℤ), generalizing the well-known procedure for n=1. This will show that the so-called “standard” and ldquo;spinor”L-functions associated with such forms are obtained as Langlands L-functions. The theory of Euler products, developed by Langlands, applied to a Levi subgroup of the exceptional group of type F <4, is then used to establish meromorphic continuation for the spinor L-function when n=3.  In this article, we prove that there are only finitely many positive definite integral quadratic forms of rank n+3(n≥2) that represent all positive definite integral quadratic forms of rank n but finitely many exceptions. Furthermore we determine all diagonal quadratic forms having such property and its exceptions remaining four as candidates. We study a linear representation ρ:B n ? GL m (Z[q ±1,t ±1]) with m=n(n-1)/2. We will show that for n=4, this representation is faithful. We prove a relation with the new Charney length function.  In [9], it was shown that if U is a random n×n unitary matrix, then for any pn, the eigenvalues of U p are i.i.d. uniform; similar results were also shown for general compact Lie groups. We study what happens when p<n instead. For the classical groups, we find that we can describe the eigenvalue distribution of U p in terms of the eigenvalue distributions of smaller classical groups; the earlier result is then a special case. The proofs rely on the fact that a certain subgroup of the Weyl group is itself a Weyl group. We generalize this fact, and use it to study the power-map problem for general compact Lie groups. We show the following two results on a set of n points in the plane, thus answering questions posed by Erdos and Purdy [11]: 1. The maximum number of triangles of maximum area (or of maximum perimeter) in a set of n points in the plane is exactly n . 2. The maximum possible number of triangles of minimum positive area in a set of n points in the plane is Θ(n 2 ) . A second-order bundle method to minimize the maximum eigenvalue function   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
In this paper we present a nonsmooth algorithm to minimize the maximum eigenvalue of matrices belonging to an affine subspace of n×n symmetric matrices. We show how a simple bundle method, the approximate eigenvalue method can be used to globalize the second-order method developed by M.L. Overton in the eighties and recently revisited in the framework of the ?-Lagrangian theory. With no additional assumption, the resulting algorithm generates a minimizing sequence. A geometrical and constructive proof is given. To prove that quadratic convergence is achieved asymptotically, some strict complementarity and non-degeneracy assumptions are needed.  Let U be an n × n random matrix chosen from Haar measure on the unitary group. For a fixed arc of the unit circle, let X be the number of eigenvalues of M which lie in the specified arc. We study this random variable as the dimension n grows, using the connection between Toeplitz matrices and random unitary matrices, and show that (X -E [X])/(\Var (X))1/2 is asymptotically normally distributed. In addition, we show that for several fixed arcs I 1 , ..., I m , the corresponding random variables are jointly normal in the large n limit.
