This paper is concerned with the problem of nurse rostering within hospitals. We analyse a class of four benchmark instances from the nurse rostering literature to provide insight into the nature of the problem. By highlighting the structure of the problem we are able to reduce the relevant solution space. A mixed integer linear programme is then able to find optimal solutions to all four instances of this class of benchmark problems, each within half an hour. Our second contribution is to extend current mathematical approaches to nurse rostering to take better account of the practical considerations. We provide a methodology for handling rostering constraints and preferences arising from the continuity from one scheduling period to the next.  相似文献

The scheduling and rostering of personnel is a problem that occurs in many organizations. Aircrew scheduling has attracted considerable attention with many heuristic methods being proposed, but in recent times set partitioning optimization methods have become more popular. The aircrew rostering problem is discussed and formulated as a generalized set partitioning model. Because of the extremely large optimization models that are generated in practical situations, some special computational techniques have been developed to produce solutions efficiently. These techniques are used to solve problems arising from an airline application in which set partitioning models with more than 650 constraints and 200 000 binary variables are generated. The solutions are produced on a Motorola 68020 microprocessor in little more than three hours.  相似文献

This paper presents a hybrid multi-objective model that combines integer programming (IP) and variable neighbourhood search (VNS) to deal with highly-constrained nurse rostering problems in modern hospital environments. An IP is first used to solve the subproblem which includes the full set of hard constraints and a subset of soft constrains. A basic VNS then follows as a postprocessing procedure to further improve the IP’s resulting solutions. The satisfaction of the excluded constraints from the preceding IP model is the major focus of the VNS. Very promising results are reported compared with a commercial genetic algorithm and a hybrid VNS approach on real instances arising in a Dutch hospital. The comparison results demonstrate that our hybrid approach combines the advantages of both the IP and the VNS to beat other approaches in solving this type of problems. We also believe that the proposed methodology can be applied to other resource allocation problems with a large number of constraints.  相似文献

We deal with a Home Health Care Problem (HHCP) which objective consists in constructing the optimal routes and rosters for the health care staffs. The challenge lies in combining aspects of vehicle routing and staff rostering which are two well known hard combinatorial optimization problems. To solve this problem, we initially propose an integer linear programming formulation (ILP) and we tested this model on small instances. To deal with larger instances we develop a matheuristic based on the decomposition of the ILP formulation into two problems. The first one is a set partitioning like problem and it represents the rostering part. The second problem consists in the routing part. This latter is equivalent to a Multi-depot Traveling Salesman Problem with Time Windows (MTSPTW).  相似文献

This paper presents the results of developing a branch and price algorithm and an ejection chain method for nurse rostering problems. The approach is general enough to be able to apply it to a wide range of benchmark nurse rostering instances. The majority of the instances are real world applications. They have been collected from a variety of sources including industrial collaborators, other researchers and various publications. The results of entering these algorithms in the 2010 International Nurse Rostering Competition are also presented and discussed. In addition, incorporated within both algorithms is a dynamic programming method which we present. The algorithm contains a number of heuristics and other features which make it very effective on the broad rostering model introduced.  相似文献

We present a novel generic programming implementation of a column-generation algorithm for the generalized staff rostering problem. The problem is represented as a generalized set partitioning model, which is able to capture commonly occurring problem characteristics given in the literature. Columns of the set partitioning problem are generated dynamically by solving a pricing subproblem, and constraint branching in a branch-and-bound framework is used to enforce integrality. The pricing problem is formulated as a novel three-stage nested shortest path problem with resource constraints that exploits the inherent problem structure. A very efficient implementation of this pricing problem is achieved by using generic programming principles in which careful use of the C++ pre-processor allows the generator to be customized for the target problem at compile-time. As well as decreasing run times, this new approach creates a more flexible modeling framework that is well suited to handling the variety of problems found in staff rostering. Comparison with a more-standard run-time customization approach shows that speedups of around a factor of 20 are achieved using our new approach. The adaption to a new problem is simple and the implementation is automatically adjusted internally according to the new definition. We present results for three practical rostering problems. The approach captures all features of each problem and is able to provide high-quality solutions in less than 15 minutes. In two of the three instances, the optimal solution is found within this time frame.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the advantages of using case-based reasoning (CBR) to solve personnel rostering problems. Constraints for personnel rostering problems are commonly categorized as either ‘hard’ or ‘soft’. Hard constraints are those that must be satisfied and a roster that violates none of these constraints is considered to be ‘feasible’. Soft constraints are more flexible and are often used to measure roster quality in terms of staff satisfaction. We introduce a method for repairing hard constraint violations using CBR. CBR is an artificial intelligence paradigm whereby new problems are solved by considering the solutions to previous similar problems. A history of hard constraint violations and their corresponding repairs, which is captured from human rostering experts, is stored and used to solve similar violations in new rosters. The soft constraints are not defined explicitly. Their treatment is captured implicitly during the repair of hard constraint violations. The knowledge in the case-base is combined with selected tabu search concepts in a hybrid meta-heuristic algorithm. Experiments on real-world data from a UK hospital are presented. The results show that CBR can guide a meta-heuristic algorithm towards feasible solutions with high staff satisfaction, without the need to explicitly define soft constraint objectives.  相似文献

A novel nurse rostering model is developed to represent real world problem instances more accurately. The proposed model is generic in the sense that it allows modelling of essentially different problem instances. Novel local search neighbourhoods are implemented to take advantage of the problem properties represented by the model. These neighbourhoods are used in a variable neighbourhood search and in an adaptive large neighbourhood search algorithm. The performance of the solution method is evaluated empirically on real world data. The proposed model is open to further extensions for covering personnel planning problems in different sectors and countries.  相似文献

Quantitative decision support on personnel planning is often restricted to either rostering or staffing. There exist some approaches in which aspects at the staffing level and the rostering level are treated in a sequential way. Obviously, such practice risks producing suboptimal solutions at both decision levels. These arguments justify an integrated approach towards improving the overall quality of personnel planning. This contribution constitutes (1) the introduction of the roster quality staffing problem and (2) a three-step methodology that enables assessing the appropriateness of a personnel structure for achieving high quality rosters, while relying on an existing rostering algorithm. Based on the rostering assessment result, specific modifications to the personnel structure can be suggested at the staffing level. The approach is demonstrated by means of two different hospital cases, which have it that they are subject to complex rostering constraints. Experimental results show that the three-step methodology indeed points out alternative personnel structures that better comply with the rostering requirements. The roster analysis approach and the corresponding staffing recommendations integrate personnel planning needs at operational and tactical levels.  相似文献

A Tabu-Search Hyperheuristic for Timetabling and Rostering   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Hyperheuristics can be defined to be heuristics which choose between heuristics in order to solve a given optimisation problem. The main motivation behind the development of such approaches is the goal of developing automated scheduling methods which are not restricted to one problem. In this paper we report the investigation of a hyperheuristic approach and evaluate it on various instances of two distinct timetabling and rostering problems. In the framework of our hyperheuristic approach, heuristics compete using rules based on the principles of reinforcement learning. A tabu list of heuristics is also maintained which prevents certain heuristics from being chosen at certain times during the search. We demonstrate that this tabu-search hyperheuristic is an easily re-usable method which can produce solutions of at least acceptable quality across a variety of problems and instances. In effect the proposed method is capable of producing solutions that are competitive with those obtained using state-of-the-art problem-specific techniques for the problems studied here, but is fundamentally more general than those techniques.  相似文献

The crew rostering problem in public bus transit aims at constructing personalized monthly schedules for all drivers. This problem is often formulated as a multi-objective optimization problem, since it considers the interests of both the management of bus companies and the drivers. Therefore, this paper attempts to solve the multi-objective crew rostering problem with the weighted sum of all objectives using ant colony optimization, simulated annealing, and tabu search methods. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper that attempts to solve the personalized crew rostering problem in public transit using different metaheuristics, especially the ant colony optimization. The developed algorithms are tested on numerical real-world instances, and the results are compared with ones solved by commercial solvers.  相似文献

A practical nurse rostering problem, which arises at a ward of an Italian private hospital, is considered. In this problem, it is required each month to assign shifts to the nursing staff subject to various requirements. A matheuristic approach is introduced, based on a set of neighborhoods iteratively searched by a commercial integer programming solver within a defined global time limit, relying on a starting solution generated by the solver running on the general integer programming formulation of the problem. Generally speaking, a matheuristic algorithm is a heuristic algorithm that uses non trivial optimization and mathematical programming tools to explore the solutions space with the aim of analyzing large scale neighborhoods. Randomly generated instances, based on the considered nurse rostering problem, were solved and solutions computed by the proposed procedure are compared to the solutions achieved by pure solvers within the same time limit. The results show that the proposed solution approach outperforms the solvers in terms of solution quality. The proposed approach has also been tested on the well known Nurse Rostering Competition instances where several new best results were reached.  相似文献

Despite decades of research into automated methods for nurse rostering and some academic successes, one may notice that there is no consistency in the knowledge that has been built up over the years and that many healthcare institutions still resort to manual practices. One of the possible reasons for this gap between the nurse rostering theory and practice is that often the academic community focuses on the development of new techniques rather than developing systems for healthcare institutions. In addition, methods suitable for one problem are usually not easily transferable to other problems. In real-world healthcare environments, a personnel manager cannot afford to model a problem and construct a roster using available approaches in order to quantitatively determine which one suits best. There is a lack of criteria for the comparison of approaches to provide a clear picture about their advantages and disadvantages and therefore their suitability to a problem in hand. This paper introduces seven criteria: expressive power, flexibility, algorithmic power, learning capabilities, maintenance, rescheduling capabilities, and parameter tuning, that may offer guidance to researchers and developers of systems for nurse rostering. Two approaches to nurse rostering, which are of very different nature, are evaluated and compared against the introduced criteria. One approach is based on meta-heuristics, while the other employs case-based reasoning.  相似文献

We study a real-world problem arising from the operations of a hospital service provider, which we term the master physician scheduling problem. It is a planning problem of assigning physicians’ full range of day-to-day duties (including surgery, clinics, scopes, calls, administration) to the defined time slots/shifts over a time horizon, incorporating a large number of constraints and complex physician preferences. The goals are to satisfy as many physicians’ preferences and duty requirements as possible while ensuring optimum usage of available resources. We propose mathematical programming models that represent different variants of this problem. The models were tested on a real case from the Surgery Department of a local government hospital, as well as on randomly generated problem instances. The computational results are reported together with analysis on the optimal solutions obtained. For large-scale instances that could not be solved by the exact method, we propose a heuristic algorithm to generate good solutions.  相似文献

We present effective linear programming based computational techniques for solving nonconvex quadratic programs with box constraints (BoxQP). We first observe that known cutting planes obtained from the Boolean Quadric Polytope (BQP) are computationally effective at reducing the optimality gap of BoxQP. We next show that the Chvátal–Gomory closure of the BQP is given by the odd-cycle inequalities even when the underlying graph is not complete. By using these cutting planes in a spatial branch-and-cut framework, together with a common integrality-based preprocessing technique and a particular convex quadratic relaxation, we develop a solver that can effectively solve a well-known family of test instances. Our linear programming based solver is competitive with SDP-based state of the art solvers on small instances and sparse instances. Most of our computational techniques have been implemented in the recent version of CPLEX and have led to significant performance improvements on nonconvex quadratic programs with linear constraints.  相似文献

This paper describes the problem of rostering a workforce so as to optimise a weighted sum of three criteria while satisfying several constraints. The rostering entailed deciding on a pattern of working days and breaks over a period of (typically) one year. Demand had to meet 24?hours each day and 365?days each year.It was possible to formulate this problem as a mixed integer program and, with some experimentation, solve it using an ‘off the shelf’ linear programming package. The results obtained are compared with rosters the client now uses.  相似文献

This paper is dedicated to a study of different extensions of the classical knapsack problem to the case when different elements of the problem formulation are subject to a degree of uncertainty described by random variables. This brings the knapsack problem into the realm of stochastic programming. Two different model formulations are proposed, based on the introduction of probability constraints. The first one is a static quadratic knapsack with a probability constraint on the capacity of the knapsack. The second one is a two-stage quadratic knapsack model, with recourse, where we introduce a probability constraint on the capacity of the knapsack in the second stage. As far as we know, this is the first time such a constraint has been used in a two-stage model. The solution techniques are based on the semidefinite relaxations. This allows for solving large instances, for which exact methods cannot be used. Numerical experiments on a set of randomly generated instances are discussed below.  相似文献

This paper presents the problem of scheduling security teams to patrol a mass rapid transit rail network of a large urban city. The main objective of patrol scheduling is to deploy security teams to stations of the network at varying time periods subject to rostering as well as security-related constraints. We present several mathematical programming models for different variants of this problem. To generate randomized schedules on a regular basis, we propose injecting randomness by varying the start time and break time for each team as well as varying the visit frequency and visit time for each station according to their reported vulnerability. Finally, we present results for the case of Singapore mass rapid transit rail network and synthetic instances.  相似文献
