Although quadratic programming problems are a special class of nonlinear programming, they can also be seen as general linear programming problems. These quadratic problems are of the utmost importance in an increasing variety of practical fields. As, in addition, ambiguity and vagueness are natural and ever-present in real-life situations requiring operative solutions, it makes perfect sense to address them using fuzzy concepts formulated as quadratic programming problems with uncertainty, i.e., as Fuzzy Quadratic Programming problems. This work proposes two novel fuzzy-sets-based methods to solve a particular class of Fuzzy Quadratic Programming problems which have vagueness coefficients in the objective function. Moreover, two other linear approaches are extended to solve the quadratic case. Finally, it is shown that the solutions reached from the extended approaches may be obtained from two proposed parametric multiobjective approaches.

This paper considers Stackelberg solutions for decision making problems in hierarchical organizations under fuzzy random environments. Taking into account vagueness of judgments of decision makers, fuzzy goals are introduced into the formulated fuzzy random two-level linear programming problems. On the basis of the possibility and necessity measures that each objective function fulfills the corresponding fuzzy goal, together with the introduction of probability maximization criterion in stochastic programming, we propose new two-level fuzzy random decision making models which maximize the probabilities that the degrees of possibility and necessity are greater than or equal to certain values. Through the proposed models, it is shown that the original two-level linear programming problems with fuzzy random variables can be transformed into deterministic two-level linear fractional programming problems. For the transformed problems, extended concepts of Stackelberg solutions are defined and computational methods are also presented. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the proposed methods.

In this paper, a multiobjective quadratic programming problem having fuzzy random coefficients matrix in the objective and constraints and the decision vector are fuzzy pseudorandom variables is considered. First, we show that the efficient solutions of fuzzy quadratic multiobjective programming problems are resolved into series-optimal-solutions of relative scalar fuzzy quadratic programming. Some theorems are proved to find an optimal solution of the relative scalar quadratic multiobjective programming with fuzzy coefficients, having decision vectors as fuzzy variables. At the end, numerical examples are illustrated in the support of the obtained results.

In this paper, two-stage stochastic quadratic programming problems with equality constraints are considered. By Monte Carlo simulation-based approximations of the objective function and its first (second)derivative,an inexact Lagrange-Newton type method is proposed. It is showed that this method is globally convergent with probability one. In particular, the convergence is local superlinear under an integral approximation error bound condition. Moreover, this method can be easily extended to solve stochastic quadratic programming problems with inequality constraints.

New Bundle Methods for Solving Lagrangian Relaxation Dual Problems
Bundle methods have been used frequently to solve nonsmooth optimization problems. In these methods, subgradient directions from past iterations are accumulated in a bundle, and a trial direction is obtained by performing quadratic programming based on the information contained in the bundle. A line search is then performed along the trial direction, generating a serious step if the function value is improved by or a null step otherwise. Bundle methods have been used to maximize the nonsmooth dual function in Lagrangian relaxation for integer optimization problems, where the subgradients are obtained by minimizing the performance index of the relaxed problem. This paper improves bundle methods by making good use of near-minimum solutions that are obtained while solving the relaxed problem. The bundle information is thus enriched, leading to better search directions and less number of null steps. Furthermore, a simplified bundle method is developed, where a fuzzy rule is used to combine linearly directions from near-minimum solutions, replacing quadratic programming and line search. When the simplified bundle method is specialized to an important class of problems where the relaxed problem can be solved by using dynamic programming, fuzzy dynamic programming is developed to obtain efficiently near-optimal solutions and their weights for the linear combination. This method is then applied to job shop scheduling problems, leading to better performance than previously reported in the literature.

The paper develops a new intuitionistic fuzzy (IF) programming method to solve group decision making (GDM) problems with interval-valued fuzzy preference relations (IVFPRs). An IF programming problem is formulated to derive the priority weights of alternatives in the context of additive consistent IVFPR. In this problem, the additive consistent conditions are viewed as the IF constraints. Considering decision makers’ (DMs’) risk attitudes, three approaches, including the optimistic, pessimistic and neutral approaches, are proposed to solve the constructed IF programming problem. Subsequently, a new consensus index is defined to measure the similarity between DMs according to their individual IVFPRs. Thereby, DMs’ weights are objectively determined using the consensus index. Combining DMs’ weights with the IF program, a corresponding IF programming method is proposed for GDM with IVFPRs. An example of E-Commerce platform selection is analyzed to illustrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method. Finally, the IF programming method is further extended to the multiplicative consistent IVFPR.

Multibody elastic contact analysis by quadratic programming
A quadratic programming method for contact problems is extended to a general problem involving contact ofn elastic bodies. Sharp results of quadratic programming theory provide an equivalence between the originaln-body contact problem and the simplex algorithm used to solve the quadratic programming problem. Two multibody examples are solved to illustrate the technique.

Ghatee and Hashemi [M. Ghatee, S.M. Hashemi, Ranking function-based solutions of fully fuzzified minimal cost flow problem, Inform. Sci. 177 (2007) 4271–4294] transformed the fuzzy linear programming formulation of fully fuzzy minimal cost flow (FFMCF) problems into crisp linear programming formulation and used it to find the fuzzy optimal solution of balanced FFMCF problems. In this paper, it is pointed out that the method for transforming the fuzzy linear programming formulation into crisp linear programming formulation, used by Ghatee and Hashemi, is not appropriate and a new method is proposed to find the fuzzy optimal solution of multi-objective FFMCF problems. The proposed method can also be used to find the fuzzy optimal solution of single-objective FFMCF problems. To show the application of proposed method in real life problems an existing real life FFMCF problem is solved.

This paper considers Stackelberg solutions for two-level linear programming problems under fuzzy random environments. To deal with the formulated fuzzy random two-level linear programming problem, an α-stochastic two-level linear programming problem is defined through the introduction of α-level sets of fuzzy random variables. Taking into account vagueness of judgments of decision makers, fuzzy goals are introduced and the α-stochastic two-level linear programming problem is transformed into the problem to maximize the satisfaction degree for each fuzzy goal. Through fractile criterion optimization in stochastic programming, the transformed stochastic two-level programming problem can be reduced to a deterministic two-level programming problem. An extended concept of Stackelberg solution is introduced and a numerical example is provided to illustrate the proposed method.

This paper deals with a portfolio selection problem with fuzzy return rates. A possibilistic mean variance (FMVC) portfolio selection model was proposed. The possibilistic programming problem can be transformed into a linear optimal problem with an additional quadratic constraint by possibilistic theory. For such problems there are no special standard algorithms. We propose a cutting plane algorithm to solve (FMVC). The nonlinear programming problem can be solved by sequence linear programming problem. A numerical example is given to illustrate the behavior of the proposed model and algorithm.

In this paper we propose an interactive fuzzy programming method for obtaining a satisfactory solution to a “bi-level quadratic fractional programming problem” with two decision makers (DMs) interacting with their optimal solutions. After determining the fuzzy goals of the DMs at both levels, a satisfactory solution is efficiently derived by updating the satisfactory level of the DM at the upper level with consideration of overall satisfactory balance between both levels. Optimal solutions to the formulated programming problems are obtained by combined use of some of the proper methods. Theoretical results are illustrated with the help of a numerical example.

In the sequel of the work reported in Liu et al. (1999), in which a method based on a dual parametrization is used to solve linear-quadratic semi-infinite programming (SIP) problems, a sequential quadratic programming technique is proposed to solve nonlinear SIP problems. A merit function to measure progress toward the solution and a procedure to compute the penalty parameter are also proposed.

Fuzzy programming and linear programming with several objective functions
In the recent past numerous models and methods have been suggested to solve the vectormaximum problem. Most of these approaches center their attention on linear programming problems with several objective functions. Apart from these approaches the theory of fuzzy sets has been employed to formulate and solve fuzzy linear programming problems. This paper presents the application of fuzzy linear programming approaches to the linear vectormaximum problem. It shows that solutions obtained by fuzzy linear programming are always efficient solutions. It also shows the consequences of using different ways of combining individual objective functions in order to determine an “optimal” compromise solution.

This paper develops two novel types of mean-variance models for portfolio selection problems, in which the security returns are assumed to be characterized by fuzzy random variables with known possibility and probability distributions. In the proposed models, we take the expected return of a portfolio as the investment return and the variance of the expected return of a portfolio as the investment risk. We assume that the security returns are triangular fuzzy random variables. To solve the proposed portfolio problems, this paper first presents the variance formulas for triangular fuzzy random variables. Then this paper applies the variance formulas to the proposed models so that the original portfolio problems can be reduced to nonlinear programming ones. Due to the reduced programming problems include standard normal distribution in the objective functions, we cannot employ the conventional solution methods to solve them. To overcome this difficulty, this paper employs genetic algorithm (GA) to solve them, and verify the obtained optimal solutions via Kuhn-Tucker (K-T) conditions. Finally, two numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed models and methods.

In conventional multiobjective decision making problems, the estimation of the parameters of the model is often a problematic task. Normally they are either given by the decision maker (DM), who has imprecise information and/or expresses his considerations subjectively, or by statistical inference from past data and their stability is doubtful. Therefore, it is reasonable to construct a model reflecting imprecise data or ambiguity in terms of fuzzy sets for which a lot of fuzzy approaches to multiobjective programming have been developed. In this paper we propose a method to solve a multiobjective linear programming problem involving fuzzy parameters (FP-MOLP), whose possibility distributions are given by fuzzy numbers, estimated from the information provided by the DM. As the parameters, intervening in the model, are fuzzy the solutions will be also fuzzy. We propose a new Pareto Optimal Solution concept for fuzzy multiobjective programming problems. It is based on the extension principle and the joint possibility distribution of the fuzzy parameters of the problem. The method relies on α-cuts of the fuzzy solution to generate its possibility distributions. These ideas are illustrated with a numerical example.

Many existing solution methodologies for machine assignment problems in group technology do not consider factors such as part demand, operation sequence and cost of intercellular moves. We formulate a 0-1 quadratic programming model that takes into account these factors in machine assignment. Two approaches are proposed to solve this problem. The first is an A*-based approach that generates optimal solutions. The second is a heuristic approach developed to solve problems with large number of machines and/or parts. The heuristic approach is shown to be efficient in producing good solutions in a computational study.

In this paper, by considering the experts' vague or fuzzy understanding of the nature of the parameters in the problem formulation process, multiobjective linear fractional programming problems with block angular structure involving fuzzy numbers are formulated. Using the a-level sets of fuzzy numbers, the corresponding nonfuzzy a-multiobjective linear fractional programming problem is introduced. The fuzzy goals of the decision maker for the objective functions are quantified by eliciting the corresponding membership functions including nonlinear ones. Through the introduction of extended Pareto optimality concepts, if the decision maker specifies the degree a and the reference membership values, the corresponding extended Pareto optimal solution can be obtained by solving the minimax problems for which the Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition method and Ritter's partitioning procedure are applicable. Then a linear programming-based interactive fuzzy satisficing method with decomposition procedures for deriving a satisficing solution for the decision maker efficiently from an extended Pareto optimal solution set is presented. An illustrative numerical example is provided to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method.
