A proper edge-coloring of a graph G is an assignment of colors to the edges of G such that adjacent edges receive distinct colors. A proper edge-coloring defines at each vertex the set of colors of its incident edges. Following the terminology introduced by Horňák, Kalinowski, Meszka and Wo?niak, we call such a set of colors the palette of the vertex. What is the minimum number of distinct palettes taken over all proper edge-colorings of G? A complete answer is known for complete graphs and cubic graphs. We study in some detail the problem for 4-regular graphs. In particular, we show that certain values of the palette index imply the existence of an even cycle decomposition of size 3 (a partition of the edge-set of a graph into 3 2-regular subgraphs whose connected components are cycles of even length). This result can be extended to 4d-regular graphs. Moreover, in studying the palette index of a 4-regular graph, the following problem arises: does there exist a 4-regular graph whose even cycle decompositions cannot have size smaller than 4?  相似文献

We investigate the maximum number of ways in which a k-vertex graph G can appear as an induced subgraph of an n-vertex graph, for nk. When this number is expressed as a fraction of all k-vertex induced subgraphs, it tends to a definite limit as n → ∞. This limit, which we call the inducibility of G, is an effectively computable invariant of G. We examine the elementary properties of this invariant: its relationship to various operations on graphs, its maximum and minimum values, and its value for some particular graphs.  相似文献

We prove that, for fixed k ≥ 3, the following classes of labeled n-vertex graphs are asymptotically equicardinal: graphs of diameter k, connected graphs of diameter at least k, and (not necessarily connected) graphs with a shortest path of length at least k. An asymptotically exact approximation of the number of such n-vertex graphs is obtained, and an explicit error estimate in the approximation is found. Thus, the estimates are improved for the asymptotic approximation of the number of n-vertex graphs of fixed diameter k earlier obtained by Füredi and Kim. It is shown that almost all graphs of diameter k have a unique pair of diametrical vertices but almost all graphs of diameter 2 have more than one pair of such vertices.  相似文献

The class of outerplanar graphs is used for testing the average complexity of algorithms on graphs. A random labeled outerplanar graph can be generated by a polynomial algorithm based on the results of an enumeration of such graphs. By a bicyclic (tricyclic) graph we mean a connected graph with cyclomatic number 2 (respectively, 3). We find explicit formulas for the number of labeled connected outerplanar bicyclic and tricyclic graphs with n vertices and also obtain asymptotics for the number of these graphs for large n. Moreover, we obtain explicit formulas for the number of labeled outerplanar bicyclic and tricyclic n-vertex blocks and deduce the corresponding asymptotics for large n.  相似文献

A k-cyclic graph is a graph with cyclomatic number k. An explicit formula for the number of labeled connected outerplanar k-cyclic graphs with a given number of vertices is obtained. In addition, such graphs with fixed cyclomatic number k and a large number of vertices are asymptotically enumerated. As a consequence, it is found that, for fixed k, almost all labeled connected outerplanar k-cyclic graphs with a large number of vertices are cacti.  相似文献

In this paper we study a graph operation which produces what we call the “vertex envelope” GV from a graph G. We apply it to plane cubic graphs and investigate the hamiltonicity of the resulting graphs, which are also cubic. To this end, we prove a result giving a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of hamiltonian cycles in the vertex envelopes of plane cubic graphs. We then use these conditions to identify graphs or classes of graphs whose vertex envelopes are either all hamiltonian or all non-hamiltonian, paying special attention to bipartite graphs. We also show that deciding if a vertex envelope is hamiltonian is NP-complete, and we provide a polynomial algorithm for deciding if a given cubic plane graph is a vertex envelope.  相似文献

Motivated by studying the spectra of truncated polyhedra, we consider the clique-inserted-graphs. For a regular graph G of degree r>0, the graph obtained by replacing every vertex of G with a complete graph of order r is called the clique-inserted-graph of G, denoted as C(G). We obtain a formula for the characteristic polynomial of C(G) in terms of the characteristic polynomial of G. Furthermore, we analyze the spectral dynamics of iterations of clique-inserting on a regular graph G. For any r-regular graph G with r>2, let S(G) denote the union of the eigenvalue sets of all iterated clique-inserted-graphs of G. We discover that the set of limit points of S(G) is a fractal with the maximum r and the minimum −2, and that the fractal is independent of the structure of the concerned regular graph G as long as the degree r of G is fixed. It follows that for any integer r>2 there exist infinitely many connected r-regular graphs (or, non-regular graphs with r as the maximum degree) with arbitrarily many distinct eigenvalues in an arbitrarily small interval around any given point in the fractal. We also present a formula on the number of spanning trees of any kth iterated clique-inserted-graph and other related results.  相似文献

In this paper, we first consider graphs allowing symmetry groups which act transitively on edges but not on darts (directed edges). We see that there are two ways in which this can happen and we introduce the terms bi‐transitive and semi‐transitive to describe them. We examine the elementary implications of each condition and consider families of examples; primary among these are the semi‐transitive spider‐graphs PS(k,N;r) and MPS(k,N;r). We show how a product operation can be used to produce larger graphs of each type from smaller ones. We introduce the alternet of a directed graph. This links the two conditions, for each alternet of a semi‐transitive graph (if it has more than one) is a bi‐transitive graph. We show how the alternets can be used to understand the structure of a semi‐transitive graph, and that the action of the group on the set of alternets can be an interesting structure in its own right. We use alternets to define the attachment number of the graph, and the important special cases of tightly attached and loosely attached graphs. In the case of tightly attached graphs, we show an addressing scheme to describe the graph with coordinates. Finally, we use the addressing scheme to complete the classification of tightly attached semi‐transitive graphs of degree 4 begun by Marus?ic? and Praeger. This classification shows that nearly all such graphs are spider‐graphs. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 45: 1–27, 2004  相似文献

Recently Alon and Friedland have shown that graphs which are the union of complete regular bipartite graphs have the maximum number of 1-factors over all graphs with the same degree sequence. We identify two families of graphs that have the maximum number of 1-factors over all graphs with the same number of vertices and edges: the almost regular graphs which are unions of complete regular bipartite graphs, and complete graphs with a matching removed. The first family is determined using the Alon and Friedland bound. For the second family, we show that a graph transformation which is known to increase network reliability also increases the number of 1-factors. In fact, more is true: this graph transformation increases the number of k-factors for all k≥1, and “in reverse” also shows that in general, threshold graphs have the fewest k-factors. We are then able to determine precisely which threshold graphs have the fewest 1-factors. We conjecture that the same graphs have the fewest k-factors for all k≥2 as well.  相似文献

For a given graph G, if the vertices of G can be partitioned into an independent set and an acyclic set, then we call G a near-bipartite graph. This paper studies the recognition of near-bipartite graphs. We give simple characterizations for those near-bipartite graphs having maximum degree at most 3 and those having diameter 2. We also show that the recognition of near-bipartite graphs is NP-complete even for graphs where the maximum degree is 4 or where the diameter is 4.  相似文献

We study properties of the sets of minimal forbidden minors for the families of graphs having a vertex cover of size at most k. We denote this set by O(k-VERTEX COVER) and call it the set of obstructions. Our main result is to give a tight vertex bound of O(k-VERTEX COVER), and then confirm a conjecture made by Liu Xiong that there is a unique connected obstruction with maximum number of vertices for k-VERTEX COVER and this graph is C2k+1. We also find two iterative methods to generate graphs in O((k+1)-VERTEX COVER) from any graph in O(k-VERTEX COVER).  相似文献

We consider the recently discovered [V. Ejov, J.A. Filar, S.K. Lucas, P. Zograf, Clustering of spectra and fractals of regular graphs, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 333 (2007) 236-246] threadlike structure of the plot representing d-regular graphs in the mean-variance coordinates of exponential sums of the graph spectra. In this note we demonstrate that this self-similar phenomenon is more ubiquitous by exhibiting it with the help of a different generating function, namely the mean and the variance of the resolvent of the adjacency matrix of the graph. We also discuss the location of non-Hamiltonian graphs within this geometric structure.  相似文献

Cographs form the minimal family of graphs containing K1 that is closed with respect to complementation and disjoint union. We discuss vertex partitions of graphs into the smallest number of cographs. We introduce a new parameter, calling the minimum order of such a partition the c-chromatic number of the graph. We begin by axiomatizing several well-known graphical parameters as motivation for this function. We present several bounds on c-chromatic number in terms of well-known expressions. We show that if a graph is triangle-free, then its chromatic number is bounded between the c-chromatic number and twice this number. We show that both bounds are sharp for graphs with arbitrarily high girth. This provides an alternative proof to a result by Broere and Mynhardt; namely, there exist triangle-free graphs with arbitrarily large c-chromatic numbers. We show that any planar graph with girth at least 11 has a c-chromatic number at most two. We close with several remarks on computational complexity. In particular, we show that computing the c-chromatic number is NP-complete for planar graphs.  相似文献

A t-walk-regular graph is a graph for which the number of walks of given length between two vertices depends only on the distance between these two vertices, as long as this distance is at most t. Such graphs generalize distance-regular graphs and t-arc-transitive graphs. In this paper, we will focus on 1- and in particular 2-walk-regular graphs, and study analogues of certain results that are important for distance-regular graphs. We will generalize Delsarte?s clique bound to 1-walk-regular graphs, Godsil?s multiplicity bound and Terwilliger?s analysis of the local structure to 2-walk-regular graphs. We will show that 2-walk-regular graphs have a much richer combinatorial structure than 1-walk-regular graphs, for example by proving that there are finitely many non-geometric 2-walk-regular graphs with given smallest eigenvalue and given diameter (a geometric graph is the point graph of a special partial linear space); a result that is analogous to a result on distance-regular graphs. Such a result does not hold for 1-walk-regular graphs, as our construction methods will show.  相似文献

In this paper we obtain some upper bounds for the b-chromatic number of K1,s-free graphs, graphs with given minimum clique partition and bipartite graphs. These bounds are given in terms of either the clique number or the chromatic number of a graph or the biclique number for a bipartite graph. We show that all the bounds are tight.  相似文献

We call a graphmatching-covered if every line belongs to a perfect matching. We study the technique of “ear-decompositions” of such graphs. We prove that a non-bipartite matching-covered graph containsK 4 orK 2K 3 (the triangular prism). Using this result, we give new characterizations of those graphs whose matching and covering numbers are equal. We apply these results to the theory of τ-critical graphs.  相似文献

A graph is polar if the vertex set can be partitioned into A and B in such a way that the subgraph induced by A is a complete multipartite graph and the subgraph induced by B is a disjoint union of cliques. Polar graphs are a common generalization of bipartite, cobipartite, and split graphs. However, recognizing polar graphs is an NP-complete problem in general. This led to the study of the polarity of special classes of graphs such as cographs and chordal graphs, cf. Ekim et al. (2008) [7] and [5]. In this paper, we study the polarity of line graphs and call a graph line-polar if its line graph is polar. We characterize line-polar bipartite graphs in terms of forbidden subgraphs. This answers a question raised in the fist reference mentioned above. Our characterization has already been used to develop a linear time algorithm for recognizing line-polar bipartite graphs, cf. Ekim (submitted for publication) [6].  相似文献

Associated to a simple undirected graph G is a simplicial complex ΔG whose faces correspond to the independent sets of G. We call a graph G shellable if ΔG is a shellable simplicial complex in the non-pure sense of Björner-Wachs. We are then interested in determining what families of graphs have the property that G is shellable. We show that all chordal graphs are shellable. Furthermore, we classify all the shellable bipartite graphs; they are precisely the sequentially Cohen-Macaulay bipartite graphs. We also give a recursive procedure to verify if a bipartite graph is shellable. Because shellable implies that the associated Stanley-Reisner ring is sequentially Cohen-Macaulay, our results complement and extend recent work on the problem of determining when the edge ideal of a graph is (sequentially) Cohen-Macaulay. We also give a new proof for a result of Faridi on the sequentially Cohen-Macaulayness of simplicial forests.  相似文献
