We consider the linear regression model where prior information in the form of linear inequalities restricts the parameter space to a polyhedron. Since the linear minimax estimator has, in general, to be determined numerically, it was proposed to minimize an upper bound of the maximum risk instead. The resulting so-called quasiminimax estimator can be easily calculated in closed form. Unfortunately, both minimax estimators may violate the prior information. Therefore, we consider projection estimators which are obtained by projecting the estimate in an optional second step. The performance of these estimators is investigated in a Monte Carlo study together with several least squares estimators, including the inequality restricted least squares estimator. It turns out that both the projected and the unprojected quasiminimax estimators have the best average performance.  相似文献

In the linear regression model with ellipsoidal parameter constraints, the problem of estimating the unknown parameter vector is studied. A well-described subclass of Bayes linear estimators is proposed in the paper. It is shown that for each member of this subclass, a generalized quadratic risk function exists so that the estimator is minimax. Moreover, some of the proposed Bayes linear estimators are admissible with respect to all possible generalized quadratic risks. Also, a necessary and sufficient condition is given to ensure that the considered Bayes linear estimator improves the least squares estimator over the whole ellipsoid whatever generalized risk function is chosen.  相似文献

It is well known that the best equivariant estimator of the variance covariance matrix of the multivariate normal distribution with respect to the full affine group of transformation is not even minimax. Some minimax estimators have been proposed. Here we treat this problem in the framework of a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) model and give other classes of minimax estimators.  相似文献

The unbiased estimator of risk of the orthogonally invariant estimator of the skew-symmetric normal mean matrix is obtained, and a class of minimax estimators and their order-preserving modification are proposed. The estimators have applications in paired comparisons model. A Monte Carlo study to compare the risks of the estimators is given.  相似文献

We consider estimation of loss for generalized Bayes or pseudo-Bayes estimators of a multivariate normal mean vector, θ. In 3 and higher dimensions, the MLEX is UMVUE and minimax but is inadmissible. It is dominated by the James-Stein estimator and by many others. Johnstone (1988, On inadmissibility of some unbiased estimates of loss,Statistical Decision Theory and Related Topics, IV (eds. S. S. Gupta and J. O. Berger), Vol. 1, 361–379, Springer, New York) considered the estimation of loss for the usual estimatorX and the James-Stein estimator. He found improvements over the Stein unbiased estimator of risk. In this paper, for a generalized Bayes point estimator of θ, we compare generalized Bayes estimators to unbiased estimators of loss. We find, somewhat surprisingly, that the unbiased estimator often dominates the corresponding generalized Bayes estimator of loss for priors which give minimax estimators in the original point estimation problem. In particular, we give a class of priors for which the generalized Bayes estimator of θ is admissible and minimax but for which the unbiased estimator of loss dominates the generalized Bayes estimator of loss. We also give a general inadmissibility result for a generalized Bayes estimator of loss. Research supported by NSF Grant DMS-97-04524.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the problem of estimating a matrix of means in multivariate normal distributions with an unknown covariance matrix under invariant quadratic loss. It is first shown that the modified Efron-Morris estimator is characterized as a certain empirical Bayes estimator. This estimator modifies the crude Efron-Morris estimator by adding a scalar shrinkage term. It is next shown that the idea of this modification provides a general method for improvement of estimators, which results in the further improvement on several minimax estimators. As a new method for improvement, an adaptive combination of the modified Stein and the James-Stein estimators is also proposed and is shown to be minimax. Through Monte Carlo studies of the risk behaviors, it is numerically shown that the proposed, combined estimator inherits the nice risk properties of both individual estimators and thus it has a very favorable risk behavior in a small sample case. Finally, the application to a two-way layout MANOVA model with interactions is discussed.  相似文献

We consider the simultaneous linear minimax estimation problem in linear models with ellipsoidal constraints imposed on an unknown parameter. Using convex analysis, we derive necessary and sufficient optimality conditions for a matrix to define the linear minimax estimator. For certain regions of the set of characteristics of linear models and constraints, we exploit these optimality conditions and get explicit formulae for linear minimax estimators.  相似文献

This article investigates linear minimax estimators of regression coefficient in a linear model with an assumption that the underlying distribution is a normal one with a nonnegative definite covariance matrix under a balanced loss function. Some linear minimax estimators of regression coefficient in the class of all estimators are obtained. The result shows that the linear minimax estimators are unique under some conditions.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the problem of estimating the quadratic loss of point estimators of a location parameter for a family of spherically symmetric distributions. We compare the unbiased loss estimator of the minimax estimator with a new shrinkage type loss estimator. Conditions on the distributions for the domination of competing estimators are given. It is shown that, in addition to the class of scale mixtures of normal distributions, there exists a more general family for which the domination results hold.  相似文献

We consider local polynomial fitting for estimating a regression function and its derivatives nonparametrically. This method possesses many nice features, among which automatic adaptation to the boundary and adaptation to various designs. A first contribution of this paper is the derivation of an optimal kernel for local polynomial regression, revealing that there is a universal optimal weighting scheme. Fan (1993, Ann. Statist., 21, 196-216) showed that the univariate local linear regression estimator is the best linear smoother, meaning that it attains the asymptotic linear minimax risk. Moreover, this smoother has high minimax risk. We show that this property also holds for the multivariate local linear regression estimator. In the univariate case we investigate minimax efficiency of local polynomial regression estimators, and find that the asymptotic minimax efficiency for commonly-used orders of fit is 100% among the class of all linear smoothers. Further, we quantify the loss in efficiency when going beyond this class.  相似文献

We consider estimation of a multivariate normal mean vector under sum of squared error loss.We propose a new class of minimax admissible estimator which are generalized Bayes with respect to a prior distribution which is a mixture of a point prior at the origin and a continuous hierarchical type prior. We also study conditions under which these generalized Bayes minimax estimators improve on the James–Stein estimator and on the positive-part James–Stein estimator.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the problem of estimating the covariance matrix and the generalized variance when the observations follow a nonsingular multivariate normal distribution with unknown mean. A new method is presented to obtain a truncated estimator that utilizes the information available in the sample mean matrix and dominates the James-Stein minimax estimator. Several scale equivariant minimax estimators are also given. This method is then applied to obtain new truncated and improved estimators of the generalized variance; it also provides a new proof to the results of Shorrock and Zidek (Ann. Statist. 4 (1976) 629) and Sinha (J. Multivariate Anal. 6 (1976) 617).  相似文献

Minimax nonhomogeneous linear estimators of scalar linear parameter functions are studied in the paper under restrictions on the parameters and variance-covariance matrix. The variance-covariance matrix of the linear model under consideration is assumed to be unknown but from a specific set R of nonnegativedefinite matrices. It is shown under this assumption that, without any restriction on the parameters, minimax estimators correspond to the least-squares estimators of the parameter functions for the “worst” variance-covariance matrix. Then the minimax mean-square error of the estimator is derived using the Bayes approach, and finally the exact formulas are derived for the calculation of minimax estimators under elliptical restrictions on the parameter space and for two special classes of possible variance-covariance matrices R. For example, it is shown that a special choice of a constant q 0 and a matrixW 0 defining one of the above classes R leads to the well known Kuks—Olman admissible estimator (see [16]) with a known variance-covariance matrixW 0. We consider semiparametric fractional exponential (FEXP) estimators of the memory parameter d for a potentially non-stationary linear long-memory time series with additive polynomial trend. We use differencing to annihilate the polynomial trend, followed by tapering to handle the potential non-invertibility of the differenced series. We propose a method of pooling the tapered periodogram which leads to more efficient estimators of d than existing pooled, tapered estimators. We establish asymptotic normality of the tapered FEXP estimator in the Gaussian case with or without pooling. We establish asymptotic normality of the estimator in the linear case if pooling is used. Finally, we consider minimax rate-optimality and feasible nearly rate-optimal estimators in the Gaussian case.  相似文献

For a vast array of general spherically symmetric location-scale models with a residual vector, we consider estimating the (univariate) location parameter when it is lower bounded. We provide conditions for estimators to dominate the benchmark minimax MRE estimator, and thus be minimax under scale invariant loss. These minimax estimators include the generalized Bayes estimator with respect to the truncation of the common non-informative prior onto the restricted parameter space for normal models under general convex symmetric loss, as well as non-normal models under scale invariant \(L^p\) loss with \(p>0\) . We cover many other situations when the loss is asymmetric, and where other generalized Bayes estimators, obtained with different powers of the scale parameter in the prior measure, are proven to be minimax. We rely on various novel representations, sharp sign change analyses, as well as capitalize on Kubokawa’s integral expression for risk difference technique. Several properties such as robustness of the generalized Bayes estimators under various loss functions are obtained.  相似文献

A subclass of the scale-parameter exponential family is considered and for the rth power of the scale parameter, which is lower bounded, an admissible minimax estimator under scale-invariant squared-error loss is presented. Also, an admissible minimax estimator of a lower-bounded parameter in the family of transformed chi-square distributions is given. These estimators are the pointwise limits of a sequence of Bayes estimators. Some examples are given.  相似文献

The stereological problem of unfolding the sphere size distribution from linear sections is considered. A minimax estimator of the intensity function of a Poisson process that describes the problem is introduced and an adaptive estimator is constructed that achieves the optimal rate of convergence over Besov balls to within logarithmic factors. The construction of these estimators uses Wavelet-Vaguelette Decomposition (WVD) of the operator that defines our inverse problem.  相似文献
