It has been conjectured by Mann that the infinite sum Σ H μ(H,G)/|G:H| s , where H ranges over all open subgroups of a finitely generated profinite group G, converges absolutely in some half right plane if G is positively finitely generated. We prove that the conjecture is true if the nonabelian crowns of G have bounded rank. In particular Mann’s conjecture holds if G has polynomial subgroup growth or is an adelic profinite group.  相似文献

We give necessary and sufficient conditions under which an amalgamated free product of finitely generated nilpotent groups is a Howson group (that is the intersection of any two finitely generated subgroups is finitely generated). Also we prove that if G = ? t, K | t ?1 At = B ?, where K is a finitely generated and infinite nilpotent group and A, B non-trivial infinite proper subgroups of K, then G is not a Howson group. The problem of deciding when an ascending HNN-extension of a finitely generated nilpotent group is a Howson group is still open.  相似文献

We prove the isogeny conjecture for A-motives over finitely generated fields K of transcendence degree ≤1. This conjecture says that for any semisimple A-motive M over K, there exist only finitely many isomorphism classes of A-motives M′ over K for which there exists a separable isogeny M′→M. The result is in precise analogy to known results for abelian varieties and for Drinfeld modules and will have strong consequences for the \mathfrak p{\mathfrak {p}}-adic and adelic Galois representations associated to M. The method makes essential use of the Harder–Narasimhan filtration for locally free coherent sheaves on an algebraic curve.  相似文献

We conjecture that a finitely generated relatively free group G has a finitely generated commutator subgroup G′ if and only if G satisfies a positive law. We confirm this conjecture for groups G in the large class, containing all residually finite and all soluble groups.  相似文献

Let Φ be a finite group and let A be the group algebra of a free abelian group over a field k. We show that, in general, A[Φ] admits nontrivial stably free modules. By contrast, if A is the group algebra of a finitely generated free group then A[Φ] has stably free cancellation.  相似文献

The Atiyah conjecture predicts that the -Betti numbers of a finite CW-complex with torsion-free fundamental group are integers. We establish the Atiyah conjecture, under the condition that it holds for G and that is a normal subgroup, for amalgamated free products . Here F is a free group and is an arbitrary semi-direct product. This includes free products G*F and semi-direct products . We also show that the Atiyah conjecture holds (with an additional technical condition) for direct and inverse limits of groups for which it is true. As a corollary it holds for positive 1-relator groups with torsion free abelianization. Putting everything together we establish a new (bigger) class of groups for which the Atiyah conjecture holds, which contains all free groups and in particular is closed under taking subgroups, direct sums, free products, extensions with torsion-free elementary amenable quotient or with free quotient, and under certain direct and inverse limits. We prove the integral Novikov conjecture for torsion free S-arithmetic subgroups Γ of linear reductive algebraic groups G of rank 0 over a global field k. They form a natural class of groups and are in general not discrete subgroups of Lie groups with finitely many connected components. Since many natural S-arithmetic subgroups contain torsion elements, we also prove a generalized integral Novikov conjecture for S-arithmetic subgroups of such algebraic groups, which contain torsion elements. These S-arithmetic subgroups also provide a natural class of groups with cofinite universal spaces for proper actions. Partially Supported by NSF grants DMS 0405884 and 0604878.  相似文献

We study algebraically and verbally closed subgroups and retracts of finitely generated nilpotent groups. A special attention is paid to free nilpotent groups and the groups UT n (Z) of unitriangular (n×n)-matrices over the ring Z of integers for arbitrary n. We observe that the sets of retracts of finitely generated nilpotent groups coincides with the sets of their algebraically closed subgroups. We give an example showing that a verbally closed subgroup in a finitely generated nilpotent group may fail to be a retract (in the case under consideration, equivalently, fail to be an algebraically closed subgroup). Another example shows that the intersection of retracts (algebraically closed subgroups) in a free nilpotent group may fail to be a retract (an algebraically closed subgroup) in this group. We establish necessary conditions fulfilled on retracts of arbitrary finitely generated nilpotent groups. We obtain sufficient conditions for the property of being a retract in a finitely generated nilpotent group. An algorithm is presented determining the property of being a retract for a subgroup in free nilpotent group of finite rank (a solution of a problem of Myasnikov). We also obtain a general result on existentially closed subgroups in finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent with cyclic center, which in particular implies that for each n the group UT n (Z) has no proper existentially closed subgroups.  相似文献

In this paper we discuss the structure of some product G =AB of nilpotent subgroups A and B. In particular we prove that if G is a minimax soluble group or a finitely generated linear group and if it does not have non-trivial periodic normal subgroups, then G is metanilpotent.  相似文献

A Conjecture on the Hall Topology for the Free Group   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The Hall topology for the free group is the coarsest topologysuch that every group morphism from the free group onto a finitediscrete group is continuous. It was shoen by M.Hall Jr thatevery finitely generated subgroup of the free group is closedfor this topology. We conjecture that if H1, H2,...,Hn are finitelygenerated subgroups of the free group, then the product H1 H2...Hn is closed. We discuss some consequences of this conjecture.First, it would give a nice and simple algorithm to computethe closure of a given rational subset of the free group. Next,it implies a similar conjecture for the free monoid, which inturn is equivalent to a deep conjecture on finite semigroupsfor the solution of which J. Rhodes has offered $100. We hopethat our new conjecture will shed some light on Rhodes' conjecture.  相似文献

We define Euler characteristics on classes of residually finite and virtually torsion free groups and we show that they satisfy certain formulas in the case of amalgamated free products and HNN extensions over finite subgroups. These formulas are obtained from a general result which applies to the rank gradient and the first L2?Betti number of a finitely generated group.  相似文献

We extend the usual definition of coherence, for modules over rings, to partially ordered right modules over a large class of partially ordered rings, called po-rings. In this situation, coherence is equivalent to saying that solution sets of finite systems of inequalities are finitely generated semimodules. Coherence for ordered rings and modules, which we call po-coherence, has the following features:.

(i) Every subring of Q, and every totally ordered division ring, is po-coherent.

(ii) For a partially ordered right module Aover a po-coherent poring R Ais po-coherent if and only if Ais a finitely presented .R-module and A +is a finitely generated R +-semimodule.

(iii) Every finitely po-presented partially ordered right module over a right po-coherent po-ring is po-coherent.

(iv) Every finitely po-presented abelian lattice-ordered group is po-coherent.  相似文献

The torsion conjecture says: for any abelian variety A defined over a number field k, the order of the torsion subgroup of A(k) is bounded by a constant C(k,d) which depends only on the number field k and the dimension d of the abelian variety. The torsion conjecture remains open in general. However, in this paper, a short argument shows that the conjecture is true for more general fields if we consider linear groups instead of abelian varieties. If G is a connected linear algebraic group defined over a field k which is finitely generated over Q,Г is a torsion subgroup of G(k). Then the order of Г is bounded by a constant C'(k, d) which depends only on k and the dimension d of G.  相似文献

We consider modules over minimax Abelian groups. We prove that if A is an Abelian minimax subgroup of the multiplicative group of a field k and if the subring K of the field k generated by the subgroup A is Noetherian, then the subgroup A is the direct product of a periodic group and a finitely generated group.  相似文献

We prove that fully residually free groups have the Howson property, that is the intersection of any two finitely generated subgroups in such a group is again finitely generated. We also establish some commensurability properties for finitely generated fully residually free groups which are similar to those of free groups. Finally we prove that for a finitely generated fully residually free group the membership problem is solvable with respect to any finitely generated subgroup.

Consider a group G and a family A of subgroups of G. We say that vertex finiteness holds for splittings of G over A if, up to isomorphism, there are only finitely many possibilities for vertex stabilizers of minimal G-trees with edge stabilizers in A.  相似文献

Abstract

Integrals in Hopf algebras are an essential tool in studying finite dimensional Hopf algebras and their action on rings. Over fields it has been shown by Sweedler that the existence of integrals in a Hopf algebra is equivalent to the Hopf algebra being finite dimensional. In this paper we examine how much of this is true Hopf algebras over rings. We show that over any commutative ring R that is not a field there exists a Hopf algebra H over R containing a non-zero integral but not being finitely generated as R-module. On the contrary we show that Sweedler's equivalence is still valid for free Hopf algebras or projective Hopf algebras over integral domains. Analogously for a left H-module algebra A we study the influence of non-zero left A#H-linear maps from A to A#H on H being finitely generated as R-module. Examples and application to separability are given.  相似文献

A result of Segal states that every complex irreducible representation of a finitely generated nilpotent group G is monomial if and only if G is abelian-by-finite. A conjecture of Parshin, recently proved affirmatively by Beloshapka and Gorchinskii (2016), characterizes the monomial irreducible representations of finitely generated nilpotent groups. This article gives a slightly shorter proof of the conjecture using ideas of Kutzko and Brown. We also give a characterization of the finite-dimensional irreducible representations of two-step nilpotent groups and describe these completely for two-step groups whose center has rank one.  相似文献

We investigate the palindromic width of finitely generated solvable groups. We prove that every finitely generated 3-step solvable group has finite palindromic width. More generally, we show the finiteness of the palindromic width for finitely generated abelian-by-nilpotent-by-nilpotent groups. For arbitrary solvable groups of step ≥3, we prove that if G is a finitely generated solvable group that is an extension of an abelian group by a group satisfying the maximal condition for normal subgroups, then the palindromic width of G is finite. We also prove that the palindromic width of ??? with respect to the set of standard generators is 3.  相似文献
