The main goal of this paper is to extend the approximation theorem of contiuous functions by Haar polynomials (see Theorem A) to infinite matrices (see Theorem C). The extension to the matricial framework will be based on the one hand on the remark that periodic functions which belong toL (T) may be one-to-one identified with Toeplitz matrices fromB(l 2) (see Theorem 0) and on the other hand on some notions given in the paper. We mention for instance:ms—a unital commutative subalgebra ofl ,C(l 2) the matricial analogue of the space of all continuous periodic functionsC(T), the matricial Haar polynomials, etc. In Section 1 we present some results concerning the spacems—a concept important for this generalization, the proof of the main theorem being given in the second section. In the complexn-dimensional projective spaceCP n , let λ p (=4p(p+n)) be the eigen value of the Laplace-Beltrami operator andH p be the space of all eigen functions of eigen value λ p . The reproducing kernelh p (z, w) ofH p is constructed explicitly in this paper, and a system of complete orthogohal functions ofH p is constructed fromh p (z,w)(p=1,2, …). It is proved using positive definite functions that a normed spaceX is unifomly homeomorphic to a subset of a Hilbert space, if and only ifX is (linearly) isomorphic to a subspace of aL 0(μ) space (=the space of the measurable functions on a probability space with convergence in probability). As a result we get thatl p (respectivelyL p (0, 1)), 2<p<∞, is not uniformly embedded in a bounded subset of itself. This answers negatively the question whether every infinite dimensional Banach space is uniformly homeomorphic to a bounded subset of itself. Positive definite functions are also used to characterize geometrical properties of Banach spaces. Partially supported by the National Science Foundation, Grant MCS-79-03322. We build a version of a thermodynamic formalism for maps of the form f(z) = ∑ j = 0 p + q a j e (jp)z where p, q > 0 and . We show in particular the existence and uniqueness of (t,α)-conformal measures and that the Hausdorff dimension HD(J f r ) = h is the unique zero of the pressure function tP(t) for t > 1, where the set J f r is the radial Julia set. Dimension subgroups in characteristicp are employed in the study of the power structure of finitep-groups. We show, e.g., that ifG is ap-group of classc (p odd) andk=⌜log p ((c+1)/(p−1))⌝, then, for alli, any product ofp i+k th powers inG is ap i th power. This sharpens a previous result of A. Mann. Examples are constructed in order to show that our constantk is quite often the best possible, and in any case cannot be reduced by more than 1. Partially supported by MPI funds. AssumeV=L, or even ◊ M 1, there is no uncountable locally finite group which can be embedded in every uncountable universal locally finite group. Similar results hold for existentially closed groups and division rings. Partially supported by NSF.  相似文献

LetG/K be the noncompact Riemannian symmetric spaceSL(3,H)/Sp(3). We shall prove in this paper that forf∈L p(SL(3,H)/Sp(3)), 1≤p≤2, the Riesz means of orderz off with respect to the eigenfunctions expansion of Laplace operator almost everywhere converge tof for Rez >δ(n,p). The critical index δ(n,p) is the same as in the classical Stein's result for Euclidean space, and as in the noncompact symmetric spaces of rank one and of complex type. The computation of the projective surgery obstruction groupsL n p (ZG), forG a hyperelementary finite group, is reduced to standard calculations in number theory, mostly involving class groups. Both the exponent of the torsion subgroup and the precise divisibility of the signatures are determined. ForG a 2-hyperelementary group, theL n p (ZG) are detected by restriction to certain subquotients ofG, and a complete set of invariants is given for oriented surgery obstructions.Partially supported by NSERC grant A4000.Partially supported by NSF grant DMS-8610730(1) and the Danish Research Council.  相似文献

in this paper we prove that for 0<p, q≤1 the real F-spacesL q[0, 1] and ℓ p are not uniformly homeomorphic. The particular casep=q=1 is due to Enflo and our work is motivated by his. In this paper we classify the p-local finite groups over p1+2+, the extraspecial group of order p3 and exponent p for odd p. This study reduces to the classification of the saturated fusion systems over p1+2+, which will be characterized by the outer automorphism group, the number of -radical subgroups and the automorphism group of each nontrivial -radical subgroup. As part of this classification, we obtain three new exotic 7-local finite groups.Partially supported by MCYT grant BFM2001-2035.Partially supported by MCYT grant BFM2001-1825.Both authors have been supported by the EU grant nr HPRN-CT-1999-00119.in final form: 1 October 2003  相似文献

Summary Distances between measures on IR d are determined from distances between their 1-dimensional projections. The method employed involves considering the 1-dimensional projections to be the Radon transform of the measures. Crucial to the main theorem is a continuity result for the inverse Radon transform. Focus is restricted to the Prohorov, dual bounded Lipschitz and d k metrics which metrize weak convergence of probability measures. These metrics are related to each other and to the Sobolev norms. The d k results extend from measures to generalized functions.Partially supported by NSF Grant No. MCS-81-01895Partially supported by NSF Grant No. MCS-82-01627 and support from the Mellon Foundation  相似文献

IfB is an étale extension of ak-algebraA, we prove for Hochschild homology thatHH *(B)≅HH*(A)⊗AB. For Galois descent with groupG there is a similar result for cyclic homology:HC *≅HC*(B)G if . In the process of proving these results we give a localization result for Hochschild homology without any flatness assumption. We then extend the definition of Hochschild homology to all schemes and show that Hochschild homology satisfies cohomological descent for the Zariski, Nisnevich and étale topologies. We extend the definition of cyclic homology to finite-dimensional noetherian schemes and show that cyclic homology satisfies cohomological descent for the Zariski and Nisnevich topologies, as well as for the étale topology overQ. Finally we apply these results to complete the computation of the algebraicK-theory of seminormal curves in characteristic zero. We present a general formula for the dimension of the projectively dual of the product of two projective varietiesX 1 andX 2, in terms of dimensions ofX 1,X 2 and their projective duals (Theorem 0.1). The proof is based on the formula due to N. Katz expressing the dimension of the dual variety in terms of the rank of certain Hessian matrix. Some consequences and related results are given, including the “Cayley trick” from [3] and its dual version. In this paper we establish dimension freeL p (ℝ n ,|x|α) norm inequalities (1<p<∞) for the oscillation and variation of the Riesz transforms in ℝ n . In doing so we findA p -weighted norm inequalities for the oscillation and the variation of the Hilbert transform in ℝ. Some weighted transference results are also proved.
