Let w be an element of the Weyl group of sl n + 1. We prove that for a certain class of elements w (which includes the longest element w0 of the Weyl group), there exist a lattice polytope R l(w) , for each fundamental weight i of sl n + 1, such that for any dominant weight = i = 1 n a i i , the number of lattice points in the Minkowski sum w = i = 1 n a i i w is equal to the dimension of the Demazure module E w (). We also define a linear map A w : R l(w) P Z R where P denotes the weight lattice, such that char E w () = e eA(x) where the sum runs through the lattice points x of w .

We consider a selfadjoint and smooth enough operator-valued functionL() on the segment [a, b]. LetL(a)0,L(b)0, and there exist two positive numbers and such that the inequality |(L()f, f)|< ([a, b] f=1) implies the inequality (L'()f, f)>. Then the functionL() admits a factorizationL()=M()(I-Z) whereM() is a continuous and invertible on [a, b] operator-valued function, and operatorZ is similar to a selfadjoint one. This result was obtained in the first part of the present paper [10] under a stronge conditionL()0 ( [a,b]). For analytic functionL() the result of this paper was obtained in [13].

Summary Let P be a Markov operator on L (X, , m). Theorem 1: (i) P is weakly mixing (ii) For every fL there is a sequence {nt} of density 1 such that all w *-cluster points of are constants (iii) For every fL there is a {kj} with w *-convergent to a constant. Theorem 2: If P is induced by a non-singular transformation , P is weakly mixing For every A, { –n(A)} has a remotely trivial subsequence. The existence of a finite invariant measure is not required in these results.

If (P, L) is a projective plane and is a triangle presentation compatible with a point-line correspondence :P L, then gives rise to a group and a thick building of typeà 2 on the vertices of which acts simply transitively. We find all triangle presentations (up to natural equivalence) compatible with some point-line correspondence :P L, when (P, L) is the projective plane of orderq=2 orq=3. For some, but not all, of these , is isomorphic to the building associated withG=PGL(3,K) whereK is a local field with discrete valuation and residual field of orderq. We identify the for which this is the case, and in these cases, find embeddings of intoG. We also describe the arithmetic nature of these groups.

In an -group M with an appropriate operator set it is shown that the -value set (M) can be embedded in the value set (M). This embedding is an isomorphism if and only if each convex -subgroup is an -subgroup. If (M) has a.c.c. and M is either representable or finitely valued, then the two value sets are identical. More generally, these results hold for two related operator sets 1 and 2 and the corresponding -value sets and . If R is a unital -ring, then each unital -module over R is an f-module and has exactly when R is an f-ring in which 1 is a strong order unit.

A standard extension for a poset P is a system Q of lower ends (descending subsets) of P containing all principal ideals of P. An isomorphism between P and Q is called recycling if [Y]Q for all YQ. The existence of such an isomorphism has rather restrictive consequences for the system Q in question. For example, if Q contains all lower ends generated by chains then a recycling isomorphism between P and Q forces Q to be precisely the system of all principal ideals. For certain standard extensions Q, it turns out that every isomorphism between P and Q (if there is any) must be recycling. Our results include the well-known fact that a poset cannot be isomorphic to the system of all lower ends, as well as the fact that a poset is isomorphic to the system of all ideals (i.e., directed lower ends) only if every ideal is principal.

Summary This article is concerned with the determination of upper and lower bounds for the lowest eigenvalue 1() of the elastically supported vibrating membrane. The elastic support on the boundary is characterized by which is regarded as a parameter. The classical Rayleigh-Principle gives upper bounds. The use of a convex functionalJ() yields upper and lower bounds for 1(). A method of decomposition leads to a lower bound for 1().

LetE be a Dedekind complete complex Banach lattice and letD denote the diagonal projection from the spaceL r (E) onto the centerZ(E) ofE. Let {T(t)} t0 be a positive strongly continuous semigroup of linear operators with generatorA. The first main result is that if the spectral bounds(A) equals to zero, then the functionD(T(t)) is a center valuedp-function. The second main result is that if for >0 the diagonalD(R(, A)) of the resolvent operatorR(, A) is strictly positive, then (D(R(, A))) –1 is a center valued Bernstein function. As an application of these results it follows that the order limit lim0D(R(,A)) exists inZ(E) and equals the order limit lim m D((R(, A)) m ) for any >0.

We consider the blowing-up Y k of the projective plane along k general points P 1,...,P k . Let k : Y k 2 be the projection map and E i the exceptional divisor corresponding to P i for 1ik. For m2 and km(m+3)/2–4 let k be the invertible sheaf k *( 2(m)) Y k (–E 1–···–E k ) on Y k , and let k: Y k N be the morphism corresponding to k . As k is a local embedding, the Gauss map k corresponding to k is defined on Y k by k (x)=(d x k )(T x (Y k )) for all xY k . We prove that this Gauss map k is injective.

Let ={P 1,...,P m } be a family of sets. A partial order P(, <) on is naturally defined by the condition P i <P j iff P i is contained in P j . When the elements of are disks (i.e. circles together with their interiors), P(, <) is called a circle order; if the elements of are n-polygons, P(, <) is called an n-gon order. In this paper we study circle orders and n-gon orders. The crossing number of a partial order introduced in [5] is studied here. We show that for every n, there are partial orders with crossing number n. We prove next that the crossing number of circle orders is at most 2 and that the crossing number of n-gon orders is at most 2n. We then produce for every n4 partial orders of dimension n which are not circle orders. Also for every n>3, we prove that there are partial orders of dimension 2n+2 which are not n-gon orders. Finally, we prove that every partial order of dimension 2n is an n-gon order. This research was supported under Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC Canada) grant numbers A2507 and A0977.

The cohomology H* (G/,) of the de Rham complex *(G/) of a compact solvmanifold G/ with deformed differential d = d + , where is a closed 1 -form, is studied. Such cohomologies naturally arise in Morse-Novikov theory. It is shown that, for any completely solvable Lie group G containing a cocompact lattice G, the cohomology H*(G/, ) is isomorphic to the cohomology H*( ) of the tangent Lie algebra of the group G with coefficients in the one-dimensional representation : defined by () = (). Moreover, the cohomology H *(G/,) is nontrivial if and only if -[] belongs to a finite subset of H 1(G/,) defined in terms of the Lie algebra .Translated from Matematicheskie Zametki, vol. 77, no. 1, 2005, pp. 67–79.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2005 by D. Summary We study a class of generalized gamma functions k (z) which relate to the generalized Euler constants k (basically the Laurent coefficients of(s)) as (z) does to the Euler constant. A new series expansion for k is derived, and the constant term in the asymptotic expansion for log k (z) is studied in detail. These and related constants are numerically computed for 1 k 15.

This paper proves the existence of resolvable block designs with divisibility into groups GD(v; k, m; 1, 2) without repeated blocks and with arbitrary parameters such that 1 = k, (v–1)/(k–1) 2 vk–2 (and also 1 k/2, (v–1)/(2(k–1)) 2 vk–2 in case k is even) k 4 andp=1 (mod k–1), k < p for each prime divisor p of number v. As a corollary, the existence of a resolvable BIB-design (v, k, ) without repeated blocks is deduced with X = k (and also with = k/2 in case of even k) k , where a is a natural number if k is a prime power and=1 if k is a composite number.Translated from Matematicheskie Zametki, Vol. 19, No. 4, pp. 623–634, April, 1976.

One investigates the minimality of derivative chains, constructed from the root vectors of polynomial pencils of operators, acting in a Hilbert space. One investigates in detail the quadratic pencil of operators. In particular, for L()=L0+L1+2L2 with bounded operators L00, L20 and Re L10, one shows the minimality in the space173-02 of the system {xk, kekxk}, where xk are eigenvectors of L(), corresponding to the characteristic numbers kin the deleted neighborhoods of which one has the representation L–1()=(–k)–1RK+WK() with one-dimensional operators Rk and operator-valued functions WK(), k=1, 2, ..., analytic for =k.Translated from Ukrainskii Matematicheskii Zhurnal, Vol. 42, No. 2, pp. 195–205, February, 1990.

LetA(·) be ann × n symmetric affine matrix-valued function of a parameteruR m , and let (u) be the greatest eigenvalue ofA(u). Recently, there has been interest in calculating (u), the subdifferential of atu, which is useful for both the construction of efficient algorithms for the minimization of (u) and the sensitivity analysis of (u), namely, the perturbation theory of (u). In this paper, more generally, we investigate the Legendre-Fenchel conjugate function of (·) and the -subdifferential (u) of atu. Then, we discuss relations between the set (u) and some perturbation bounds for (u).The author is deeply indebted to Professor J. B. Hiriart-Urruty who suggested this study and provided helpful advice and constant encouragement. The author also thanks the referees and the editors for their substantial help in the improvement of this paper.

We study the regularity of the minimizer u for the functional F (u,f)=|u|2 + |u–f{2 over all maps uH 1(, S 2). We prove that for some suitable functions f every minimizer u is smooth in if 0 and for the same functions f, u has singularities when is large enough.

Summary We consider the two-dimensional Helmholtz equation u+u=0 inD with the boundary conditionsu=0 on D. D is the Swiss Cross — a region consisting of five unit squares. A method based on the concept of Coherence is utilized to determine an approximation for the first eigenvalue= 1 more accurate than calculated by classical difference methods. The numerical result is used to illustrate isoperimetric upper and lower bounds for 1, and to test some conjectures on its relations with torsional rigidity.Dedicated to the memory of Professor Lathar Collatz

Thewidth (chain number) of a partial order P, < is the smallest cardinal such that ¦A¦< 1 + whenever A is an antichain (chain) in P.
