Adjoint techniques are a common tool in the numerical treatment of optimal control problems. They are used for efficient evaluations of the gradient of the objective in gradient-based optimization algorithms. Different adjoint techniques for the optimal control of Burgers equation with Neumann boundary control are studied. The methods differ in the point in the numerical algorithm at which the adjoints are incorporated. Discretization methods for the continuous adjoint are discussed and compared with methods applying the application of the discrete adjoint. At the example of the implicit Euler method and the Crank Nicolson method it is shown that a discretization for the adjoint problem that is adjoint to the discretized optimal control problem avoids additional errors in gradient-based optimization algorithms. The approach of discrete adjoints coincides with that of automatic differentiation tools (AD) which provide exact gradient calculations on the discrete level.  相似文献

Structure-preserving numerical schemes for a nonlinear parabolic fourth-order equation, modeling the electron transport in quantum semiconductors, with periodic boundary conditions are analyzed. First, a two-step backward differentiation formula (BDF) semi-discretization in time is investigated. The scheme preserves the nonnegativity of the solution, is entropy stable and dissipates a modified entropy functional. The existence of a weak semi-discrete solution and, in a particular case, its temporal second-order convergence to the continuous solution is proved. The proofs employ an algebraic relation which implies the G-stability of the two-step BDF. Second, an implicit Euler and $q$ -step BDF discrete variational derivative method are considered. This scheme, which exploits the variational structure of the equation, dissipates the discrete Fisher information (or energy). Numerical experiments show that the discrete (relative) entropies and Fisher information decay even exponentially fast to zero.  相似文献

This is one of our series works on discrete energy analysis of the variable-step BDF schemes. In this part, we present stability and convergence analysis of the third-order BDF (BDF3) schemes with variable steps for linear diffusion equations, see, e.g., [SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 58:2294-2314] and [Math. Comp., 90: 1207-1226] for our previous works on the BDF2 scheme. To this aim, we first build up a discrete gradient structure of the variable-step BDF3 formula under the condition that the adjacent step ratios are less than 1.4877, by which we can establish a discrete energy dissipation law. Mesh-robust stability and convergence analysis in the $L^2$ norm are then obtained. Here the mesh robustness means that the solution errors are well controlled by the maximum time-step size but independent of the adjacent time-step ratios. We also present numerical tests to support our theoretical results.  相似文献

This paper considers the numerical solution of optimal control problems based on ODEs. We assume that an explicit Runge-Kutta method is applied to integrate the state equation in the context of a recursive discretization approach. To compute the gradient of the cost function, one may employ Automatic Differentiation (AD). This paper presents the integration schemes that are automatically generated when differentiating the discretization of the state equation using AD. We show that they can be seen as discretization methods for the sensitivity and adjoint differential equation of the underlying control problem. Furthermore, we prove that the convergence rate of the scheme automatically derived for the sensitivity equation coincides with the convergence rate of the integration scheme for the state equation. Under mild additional assumptions on the coefficients of the integration scheme for the state equation, we show a similar result for the scheme automatically derived for the adjoint equation. Numerical results illustrate the presented theoretical results.  相似文献

We develop two linear, second order energy stable schemes for solving the governing system of partial differential equations of a hydrodynamic phase field model of binary fluid mixtures. We first apply the Fourier pseudo-spectral approximation to the partial differential equations in space to obtain a semi-discrete, time-dependent, ordinary differential and algebraic equation (DAE) system, which preserves the energy dissipation law at the semi-discrete level. Then, we discretize the DAE system by the Crank-Nicolson (CN) and the second-order backward differentiation/extrapolation (BDF/EP) method in time, respectively, to obtain two fully discrete systems. We show that the CN method preserves the energy dissipation law while the BDF/EP method does not preserve it exactly but respects the energy dissipation property of the hydrodynamic model. The two new fully discrete schemes are linear, unconditional stable, second order accurate in time and high order in space, and uniquely solvable as linear systems. Numerical examples are presented to show the convergence property as well as the efficiency and accuracy of the new schemes in simulating mixing dynamics of binary polymeric solutions.  相似文献

We present a numerical method for solving tracking-type optimal control problems subject to scalar nonlinear hyperbolic balance laws in one and two space dimensions. Our approach is based on the formal optimality system and requires numerical solutions of the hyperbolic balance law forward in time and its nonconservative adjoint equation backward in time. To this end, we develop a hybrid method, which utilizes advantages of both the Eulerian finite-volume central-upwind scheme (for solving the balance law) and the Lagrangian discrete characteristics method (for solving the adjoint transport equation). Experimental convergence rates as well as numerical results for optimization problems with both linear and nonlinear constraints and a duct design problem are presented.  相似文献

A nonlinear fully implicit finite difference scheme with second-order time evolution for nonlinear diffusion problem is studied.The scheme is constructed with two-layer coupled discretization (TLCD) at each time step.It does not stir numerical oscillation,while per-mits large time step length,and produces more accurate numerical solutions than the other two well-known second-order time evolution nonlinear schemes,the Crank-Nicolson (CN)scheme and the backward difference formula second-order (BDF2) scheme.By developing a new reasoning technique,we overcome the difficulties caused by the coupled nonlinear discrete diffusion operators at different time layers,and prove rigorously the TLCD scheme is uniquely solvable,unconditionally stable,and has second-order convergence in both s-pace and time.Numerical tests verify the theoretical results,and illustrate its superiority over the CN and BDF2 schemes.  相似文献

The Willmore flow is well known problem from the differential geometry. It minimizes the Willmore functional defined as integral of the mean-curvature square over given manifold. For the graph formulation, we derive modification of the Willmore flow with anisotropic mean curvature. We define the weak solution and we prove an energy equality. We approximate the solution numerically by the complementary finite volume method. To show the stability, we re-formulate the resulting scheme in terms of the finite difference method. By using simple framework of the finite difference method (FDM) we show discrete version of the energy equality. The time discretization is done by the method of lines and the resulting system of ODEs is solved by the Runge–Kutta–Merson solver with adaptive integration step. We also show experimental order of convergence as well as results of the numerical experiments, both for several different anisotropies.  相似文献

In this paper, an implicit‐explicit two‐step backward differentiation formula (IMEX‐BDF2) together with finite difference compact scheme is developed for the numerical pricing of European and American options whose asset price dynamics follow the regime‐switching jump‐diffusion process. It is shown that IMEX‐BDF2 method for solving this system of coupled partial integro‐differential equations is stable with the second‐order accuracy in time. On the basis of IMEX‐BDF2 time semi‐discrete method, we derive a fourth‐order compact (FOC) finite difference scheme for spatial discretization. Since the payoff function of the option at the strike price is not differentiable, the results show only second‐order accuracy in space. To remedy this, a local mesh refinement strategy is used near the strike price so that the accuracy achieves fourth order. Numerical results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for European and American options under regime‐switching jump‐diffusion models.  相似文献

Parallel multistep hybrid methods (PHMs) can be implemented in parallel with two processors, accordingly have almost the same computational speed per integration step as BDF methods of the same order with the same stepsize. But PHMs have better stability properties than BDF methods of the same order for stiff differential equations. In the present paper, we give some results on error analysis of A(α)-stable PHMs for the initial value problems of ordinary differential equations in singular perturbation form. Our convergence results are similar to those of linear multistep methods (such as BDF methods), i.e. the convergence orders are equal to their classical convergence orders, and no order reduction occurs. Some numerical examples also confirm our results.  相似文献

In the past few years, a number of Lie-group methods based on Runge—Kutta schemes have been proposed. One might extrapolate that using a selfadjoint Runge—Kutta scheme yields a Lie-group selfadjoint scheme, but this is generally not the case: Lie-group methods depend on the choice of a coordinate chart which might fail to comply to selfadjointness.In this paper we discuss Lie-group methods and their dependence on centering coordinate charts. The definition of the adjoint of a numerical method is thus subordinate to the method itself and the choice of the chart. We study Lie-group numerical methods and their adjoints, and define selfadjoint numerical methods. The latter are defined in terms of classical selfadjoint Runge—Kutta schemes and symmetric coordinates, based on geodesic or on flow midpoint. As result, the proposed selfadjoint Lie-group numerical schemes obey time-symmetry both for linear and nonlinear problems.This revised version was published online in October 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Abstract

In recent years non-linear Black–Scholes models have been used to build transaction costs, market liquidity or volatility uncertainty into the classical Black–Scholes concept. In this article we discuss the applicability of implicit numerical schemes for the valuation of contingent claims in these models. It is possible to derive sufficient conditions, which are required to ensure the convergence of the backward differentiation formula (BDF) and Crank–Nicolson scheme (CN) scheme to the unique viscosity solution. These stability conditions can be checked a priori and convergent schemes can be constructed for a large class of non-linear models and payoff profiles. However, if these conditions are not satisfied we show that the schemes are not convergent or produce spurious solutions. We study the practical implications of the derived stability criterions on relevant numerical examples.  相似文献

Two fully discrete methods are investigated for simulating the distributed-order sub-diffusion equation in Caputo’s form. The fractional Caputo derivative is approximated by the Caputo’s BDF1 (called L1 early) and BDF2 (or L1-2 when it was first introduced) approximations, which are constructed by piecewise linear and quadratic interpolating polynomials, respectively. It is shown that the first scheme, using the BDF1 formula, possesses the discrete minimum-maximum principle and nonnegativity preservation property such that it is stable and convergent in the maximum norm. The method using the BDF2 formula is shown to be stable and convergent in the discrete H 1 norm by using the discrete energy method. For problems of distributed order within a certain region, the method is also proven to preserve the discrete maximum principle and nonnegativity property. Extensive numerical experiments are provided to show the effectiveness of numerical schemes, and to examine the initial singularity of the solution. The applicability of our numerical algorithms to a problem with solution which lacks the smoothness near the initial time is examined by employing a class of power-type nonuniform meshes.  相似文献

The A(α)-stable numerical methods (ANMs) for the number of steps k ≤ 7 for stiff initial value problems (IVPs) in ordinary differential equations (ODEs) are proposed. The discrete schemes proposed from their equivalent continuous schemes are obtained. The scaled time variable t in a continuous method, which determines the discrete coefficients of the discrete method, is chosen in such a way as to ensure that the discrete scheme attains a high order and A(α)-stability. We select the value of α for which the schemes proposed are absolutely stable. The new algorithms are found to have a comparable accuracy with that of the backward differentiation formula (BDF) discussed in [12] which implements the Ode15s in the Matlab suite.  相似文献

We analyse the Euler discretization to a class of linear optimal control problems. First we show convergence of order h for the discrete approximation of the adjoint solution and the switching function, where h is the mesh size. Under the additional assumption that the optimal control has bang-bang structure we show that the discrete and the exact controls coincide except on a set of measure O(h). As a consequence, the discrete optimal control approximates the optimal control with order 1 w.r.t. the L 1-norm and with order 1/2 w.r.t. the L 2-norm. An essential assumption is that the slopes of the switching function at its zeros are bounded away from zero which is in fact an inverse stability condition for these zeros. We also discuss higher order approximation methods based on the approximation of the adjoint solution and the switching function. Several numerical examples underline the results.  相似文献

In this article, we investigate the stability and convergence of a new class of blended three-step Backward Differentiation Formula (BDF) time-stepping scheme for spatially discretized Navier-Stokes-type system modeling Soret driven convective flows. A Galerkin mixed finite element spatial discretization is assumed, and the temporal discretization is by the implicit blended three-step BDF scheme. The blended BDF scheme is more accurate than the classical second order accurate two-step BDF (BDF2) scheme, yet strongly A-stable. We consider an implicit, linearly extrapolated version of the scheme to improve its efficiency. We present optimal finite element error estimates and prove the scheme is unconditionally stable and convergent. Numerical experiments are presented that compare the scheme to the classical BDF2 scheme.  相似文献

We investigate the behavior of adaptive time stepping numerical algorithms under the reverse mode of automatic differentiation (AD). By differentiating the time step controller and the error estimator of the original algorithm, reverse mode AD generates spurious adjoint derivatives of the time steps. The resulting discrete adjoint models become inconsistent with the adjoint ODE, and yield incorrect derivatives. To regain consistency, one has to cancel out the contributions of the non-physical derivatives in the discrete adjoint model. We demonstrate that the discrete adjoint models of one-step, explicit adaptive algorithms, such as the Runge–Kutta schemes, can be made consistent with their continuous counterparts using simple code modifications. Furthermore, we extend the analysis to cover second order adjoint models derived through an extra forward mode differentiation of the discrete adjoint code. Several numerical examples support the mathematical derivations.  相似文献

We consider an optimal control problem for systems governed by ordinary differential equations with control constraints. The state equation is discretized by the explicit fourth order Runge-Kutta scheme and the controls are approximated by discontinuous piecewise affine ones. We then propose an approximate gradient projection method that generates sequences of discrete controls and progressively refines the discretization during the iterations. Instead of using the exact discrete directional derivative, which is difficult to calculate, we use an approximate derivative of the cost functional defined by discretizing the continuous adjoint equation by the same Runge-Kutta scheme and the integral involved by Simpson's integration rule, both involving intermediate approximations. The main result is that accumulation points, if they exist, of sequences constructed by this method satisfy the weak necessary conditions for optimality for the continuous problem. Finally, numerical examples are given.  相似文献

We study the superconvergence property of fully discrete finite element approximation for quadratic optimal control problems governed by semilinear parabolic equations with control constraints. The time discretization is based on difference methods, whereas the space discretization is done using finite element methods. The state and the adjoint state are approximated by piecewise linear functions and the control is approximated by piecewise constant functions. First, we define a fully discrete finite element approximation scheme for the semilinear parabolic control problem. Second, we derive the superconvergence properties for the control, the state and the adjoint state. Finally, we do some numerical experiments for illustrating our theoretical results.  相似文献

Compared to the classical Black-Scholes model for pricing options, the Finite Moment Log Stable (FMLS) model can more accurately capture the dynamics of the stock prices including large movements or jumps over small time steps. In this paper, the FMLS model is written as a fractional partial differential equation and we will present a new numerical scheme for solving this model. We construct an implicit numerical scheme with second order accuracy for the FMLS and consider the stability and convergence of the scheme. In order to reduce the storage space and computational cost, we use a fast bi-conjugate gradient stabilized method (FBi-CGSTAB) to solve the discrete scheme. A numerical example is presented to show the efficiency of the numerical method and to demonstrate the order of convergence of the implicit numerical scheme. Finally, as an application, we use the above numerical technique to price a European call option. Furthermore, by comparing the FMLS model with the classical B-S model, the characteristics of the FMLS model are also analyzed.  相似文献
