This paper reports the preparation and characterization of pure Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of a stilbene derivative containing two alkyl chains, namely 4-dioctadecylamino-4'-nitrostilbene. Mixed films incorporating docosanoic acid and the stilbene derivative are also studied. Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) analysis has revealed the existence of randomly oriented three-dimensional (3D) aggregates, spontaneously formed immediately after the spreading process of the stilbene derivative onto the water surface. These 3D aggregates coexist with a Langmuir film that shows the typical gas, liquid, and solid-like phases in the surface pressure and surface potential vs area per molecule isotherms, indicative of an average preferential orientation of the stilbene compound at the air-water interface, and a gradual molecular arrangement into a defined structure upon compression. A blue shift of 55 nm of the reflection spectrum of the Langmuir film with respect to the spectrum of a chloroform solution of the nitrostilbene indicates that two-dimensional (2D) H-aggregates are formed at the air-water interface. The monolayers are transferred undisturbed onto solid substrates with atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealing that the one layer LB films are constituted by a monolayer of the stilbene derivative together with some 3D aggregates. When the nitrostilbene compound is blended with docosanoic acid, the 3D aggregation is avoided in the Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett films, but does not limit the formation of 2D H-aggregates, desirable for second-order nonlinear optical response in the blue domain. The AFM images of the mixed LB films show that they are formed by a docosanoic acid monolayer and, on the top of it, a bilayer of the stilbene derivative.

We have investigated the self-assembling properties of the class I hydrophobin Vmh2 isolated from the fungus Pleurotus ostreatus. Five different hydrophobin self assembled samples including monolayers, bilayers, and rodlets have been prepared by Langmuir technique and studied at the nanoscale. Local wettability and visco-elasticity of the different hydrophobins samples were obtained from atomic force spectroscopy experiments in dynamic mode performed at different, controlled relative humidity (RH) values. It was found that hydrophobins assembled either in rodlets or in bilayer films, display similar hydropathicity and viscoelasticity in contrast to the case of monolayers, whose hydropathicity and viscoelasticity depend on the adopted preparation method (Langmuir-Blodgett or Langmuir-Schaeffer). The comparison with monolayers properties evidences a rearrangement of the bilayers adsorbed onto solid substrates. It is shown that this rearrangement leads to the formation of a stable hydrophobic film, and that the rodlets structure consists in fragments of restructured proteins bilayers. Our results support the hypothesis that the observed variations in the viscoelastic properties could be ascribed to the localization of the large flexible loop, typical of Class I hydrophobins which appears free at the air interface for LB monolayers but not for the other samples. These findings should now serve future developments and applications of hydrophobin films beyond the archetypal monolayer.  相似文献

The self-organization behavior of a wedge-shaped surfactant, disodium-3,4,5-tris(dodecyloxy)phenylmethylphosphonate, was studied in Langmuir monolayers (at the air-water interface), Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayers and multilayers, and films adsorbed spontaneously from isooctane solution onto a mica substrate (self-assembled films). This compound forms an inverted hexagonal lyotropic liquid crystal phase in the bulk and in thick adsorbed films. Surface pressure isotherm and Brewster angle microscope (BAM) studies of Langmuir monolayers revealed three phases: gas (G), liquid expanded (LE), and liquid condensed (LC). The surface pressure-temperature phase diagram was determined in detail; a triple point was found at approximately 10 degrees C. Atomic force microscope (AFM) images of LB monolayers transferred from various regions of the phase diagram were consistent with the BAM images and indicated that the LE regions are approximately 0.5 nm thinner than the LC regions. AFM images were also obtained of self-assembled films after various adsorption times. For short adsorption times, when monolayer self-assembly was incomplete, the film topography indicated the coexistence of two distinct monolayer phases. The height difference between these two phases was again 0.5 nm, suggesting a correspondence with the LE/LC coexistence observed in the Langmuir monolayers. For longer immersion times, adsorbed multilayers assembled into highly organized periodic arrays of inverse cylindrical micelles. Similar periodic structures, with the same repeat distance of 4.5 nm, were also observed in three-layer LB films. However, the regions of organized periodic structure were much smaller and more poorly correlated in the LB multilayers than in the films adsorbed from solution. Collectively, these observations indicate a high degree of similarity between the molecular organization in Langmuir layers/LB films and adsorbed self-assembled films. In both cases, monolayers progress through an LE phase, into LE/LC coexistence, and finally into LC phase as surface density increases. Following the deposition of an additional bilayer, the film reorganizes to form an array of inverted cylindrical micelles.  相似文献

This communication reports the surface pressure (pi) versus area per molecule (A) isotherm characteristics of the mixed films of 9-phenyl anthracene (PA) in stearic acid (SA) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) matrices, at the air-water interface. The mixed Langmuir films at the air-water interface have been observed to be easily transferred onto solid substrates to form uniform Langmuir-Blodgett films. By changing various parameters, namely molefraction, surface pressure of lifting and number of layers, the mixed Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of various types have been fabricated successfully and their spectroscopic characteristics have been reported. From the isotherm characteristics and the area per molecule versus molefraction plot, it is evident that the PA molecules are successfully incorporated into mixed Langmuir-Blodgett films. UV-vis absorption spectroscopic study of the mixed LB films at various molefractions of PA in two different matrices reveal that formation of I-type aggregate in PMMA matrix whereas both I- and H-type aggregates are playing their dominant role in SA matrix. Moreover, fluorescence spectroscopic study reveals reabsorption effect. Molecular movement persists in the freshly prepared LB films, as is evident from the time dependent changes in both UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectra of the mixed LB films in both matrices. From our observation it is evident that about 200 h is required to get the LB films in a stable condition. Dimers and higher order n-mers are formed at a higher surface pressure of 30 mNm(-1).  相似文献

The immobilization of enzymes in organized two-dimensional matrices is a key requirement for many biotechnological applications. In this paper, we used the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique to obtain controlled architectures of urease immobilized in solid supports, whose physicochemical properties were investigated in detail. Urease molecules were adsorbed at the air-water interface and incorporated into Langmuir monolayers of the phospholipid dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl glycerol (DPPG). Incorporation of urease made DPPG monolayers more flexible and caused the reduction of the equilibrium and dynamic elasticity of the film. Urease and DPPG-urease mixed monolayers could be transferred onto solid substrates, forming LB films. A close packing arrangement of urease was obtained, especially in the mixed LB films, which was inferred with nanogravimetry and electrochemistry measurements. From the blocking effect of the LB films deposited onto indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates, the electrochemical properties of the LB films pointed to a charge transport controlled by the lipid architecture.  相似文献

Langmuir-Blodgett films of a series of cellulose ethers are investigated by X-ray and neutron reflectometry. Two types of samples are considered: simple alkyl ethers of cellulose and derivatives obtained by the alkylation of (2-hydroxypropyl)cellulose (HPC). All of the cellulose ethers form stable monolayers at the air-water interface. Significant differences are, however, found in the surface pressure-area compression isotherms. Ethers prepared from HPC typically exhibit larger limiting molecular areas and higher surface pressures than the corresponding simple cellulose ethers. The ease of monolayer transfer to hydrophobic silicon substrates differs greatly from one type of molecule to another. Successful transfer conditions are found only for ethers that form stable monolayers at sufficiently high surface pressures. Surprisingly, deuterated HPC ethers, prepared for neutron reflectivity measurements, exhibit monolayer properties significantly different from those of their hydrogenated analogues. Although essentially identical limiting molecular areas are found, the surface pressure corresponding to a characteristic plateau transition in the compression isotherm is found to decrease by about 8-10 mN m(-1) upon side chain deuteration. X-ray reflectivity results show a linear increase of film thickness with the number of deposited layers, indicating a regular and reproducible transfer. Observed average layer spacings are, however, significantly smaller than the calculated length of fully extended side chains. Neutron reflectivity curves recorded for composite LB films composed of both deuterated and hydrogenated polymers exhibit regular Keissig fringes, but no Bragg peak. This result indicates that these LB films do not possess an internal periodic structure and the initial layer-by-layer organization is lost by large interlayer diffusion.  相似文献

We report on the reduction of aqueous chloroaurate ions by glucose to form gold nanoparticles of uniform size. We further demonstrate the complexation of these particles with octadecylamine (ODA) monolayers at the air-water interface. Pressure-area (pi-A) isotherms as a function of time of complexation revealed a significant expansion of the monolayer. Surface pressure variation with time for constant areas after spreading of the monolayer was carried out to observe the kinetics of complexation of the colloidal particles at the interface. The kinetics of complexation of the particles at the interface was also monitored by Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) measurements. Langmuir-Blodgett films of the particles complexed with ODA were formed at a subphase pH of 9 onto different substrates. Quartz crystal microgravimetry (QCM) was used to quantify the amount of particles deposited per immersion cycle of the quartz crystal. The LB films were further characterized by UV-vis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements. TEM measurements indicate a close packed and equidistant arrangement of colloidal particles in the LB film, probably due to hydrogen-bonding interactions.  相似文献

The influence of small amounts of bovine serum albumin (BSA) (nM concentration) on the lateral organization of phospholipid monolayers at the air-water interface and transferred onto solid substrates as one-layer Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films was investigated. The kinetics of adsorption of BSA onto the phospholipid monolayers was monitored with surface pressure isotherms in a Langmuir trough, for the zwitterionic dipalmitoylphosphatidyl ethanolamine (N,N-dimethyl-PE) and the anionic dimyristoylphosphatidic acid (DMPA). A monolayer of N,N-dimethyl-PE or DMPA incorporating BSA was transferred onto a solid substrate using the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) images of one-layer LB films displayed protein-phospholipid domains, whose morphology was characterized using dynamic scaling theories to calculate roughness exponents. For DMPA-BSA films the surface is characteristic of self-affine fractals, which may be described with the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation. On the other hand, for N,N-dimethyl-PE-BSA films, the results indicate a relatively flat surface within the globule. The height profile and the number and size of globules varied with the type of phospholipid. The overall results, from kinetics of adsorption on Langmuir monolayers and surface morphology in LB films, could be interpreted in terms of the higher affinity of BSA to the anionic DMPA than to the zwitterionic N,N-dimethyl-PE. Furthermore, the effects from such small amounts of BSA in the monolayer point to a cooperative response of DMPA and N,N-dimethyl-PE monolayers to the protein.  相似文献

This paper reports the fabrication and characterization of Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films incorporating an oligo(phenylene-ethynylene) (OPE) derivative, namely, 4-[4-(4-hexyloxyphenylethynyl)-phenylethynyl]-benzoic acid (HBPEB). Conditions appropriate for deposition of monolayers of HBPEB at the air-water interface have been established and the resulting Langmuir films characterized by a combination of surface pressure and surface potential versus area per molecule isotherms, Brewster angle microscopy, and ultraviolet reflection spectroscopy. The Langmuir films are readily transferred onto solid substrates, and one-layer LB films transferred at several surface pressures onto mica substrates have been analyzed by means of atomic force microscopy, from which it can be concluded that 14 mN/m is an optimum surface pressure of transference, giving well-ordered homogeneous films without three-dimensional defects and a low surface roughness. The optical and emissive properties of the LB films have been determined with significant blue-shifted absorption spectra indicating formation of two-dimensional H aggregates and a Stokes shift illustrating the effects of the solid-like environment on the molecular chromophore.  相似文献

Molecular recognition of mixed nucleolipids of 1-(2-octadecyloxycarbonylethyl)cytosine and 7-(2-octadecyloxycarbonylethyl)guanine in the monolayers at the air-water interface and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films has been investigated in detail using surface pressure/potential-area isotherms, infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) transmission spectroscopy, respectively. Prior to molecular recognition, the cytosine moieties in the monolayer were hydrogen bonded with an almost flat-on orientation, the alkyl chains were uniaxially oriented with respect to the film normal, the guanine moieties in the monolayer were stacked probably through pi-pi interaction with an end-on orientation, and the C-C-C planes of the alkyl chains were preferentially oriented parallel to the water surface. In the monolayer of equimolar mixture, molecular recognition between the cytosine and guanine moieties occurred together with the ring planes of base pairing and the C-C-C planes of the alkyl chains favorably oriented parallel to the water surface. The guanine moieties underwent an orientation change from an end-on mode before molecular recognition to a flat-on one after molecular recognition. The base pairing between the cytosine and guanine moieties in the monolayers was achieved since the N7-substituted guanine derivatives suppressed the formation of guanine tetramers. Both the IRRAS spectra of the monolayers and the FTIR spectra of the LB films presented the exact sites in the cytosine and guanine moieties for the formation of triple hydrogen bonds. The base pairing resulted in a change in molecular orientation and interaction, and the corresponding LB film exhibited a different phase transition behavior from a typical crystal transition for the cytosine-functionalized nucleolipids and an analogous glass transition for the guanine-functionalized nucleolipids. The thermal stability of the mixed LB film was improved in comparison to the LB films of pure components.  相似文献

Nickel arachidate (NiA) Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films have been deposited on hydrophilic Si(0 0 1) substrates by three (up-down-up) and five (up-down-up-down-up) strokes. During deposition, substrates were kept inside the water subphase for different times after each down stroke. Structural information of all the LB films have been obtained from X-ray reflectivity (XRR) studies. One and two symmetric monolayer (SML) was deposited on top of the asymmetric monolayer (AML) in three and five stokes respectively. All the preformed LB films were then used to go through the air-water interface with the same speed that was used at the time of film deposition. Structural information obtained from the XRR studies show that mainly the top layer density decreases after passing through the air-water interface but the layered structure remains the same. Information obtained from both the XRR and atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies suggest that molecules peeled from the top SML layer do not reincorporate with the LB film through tail-tail hydrophobic interaction. Our study shows that NiA LB film has better stability compared with cadmium arachidate LB film inside the water subphase without forming any out-of-plane molecular reorganization.  相似文献

Langmuir monolayers and Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) film morphology of amphiphilic triblock copolymers are studied using surface pressure-area measurements and atomic force microscopy (AFM), respectively. The triblock copolymers are composed of long water-soluble poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) chains as middle block with very short poly(perfluorohexylethyl methacrylate) (PFMA) end blocks. The surface pressure-area isotherms show phase transitions in the brush regime. This phase transition is due to a rearrangement of PFMA block at the air–water interface. It becomes more significant with increasing PFMA content in the copolymer. LB films transferred at low surface pressures from the air–water interface to hydrophilic silicon substrates show surface micelles in the size range of 50–100 nm. A typical crystalline morphology of the corresponding PEO homopolymer is observed in LB films of copolymers with very short PFMA blocks, transferred in the brush region at high surface pressure. This crystallization is hindered with increasing PFMA content in the copolymer.  相似文献

This article describes the synthesis and fabrication of Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films incorporating a chiral azobenzene derivative, namely, ( S)-4- sec-butyloxy-4'-[5'-(methyloxycarbonyl)pentyl-1'-oxy]azobenzene, abbreviated as AZO-C4(S). Appropriate conditions for the fabrication of monolayers of AZO-C4(S) at the air-water interface have been established, and the resulting Langmuir films have been characterized by a combination of surface pressure and surface potential versus area per molecule isotherms, Brewster angle microscopy, and UV-vis reflection spectroscopy. The results indicate the formation of an ordered trilayer at the air-water interface with UV-vis reflection spectroscopy showing a new supramolecular architecture for multilayered films as well as the formation of J aggregates. Films were transferred onto solid substrates, with AFM revealing well-ordered multilayered films without 3D defects. Infrared and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy indicate that the supramolecular architecture may be favored by the formation of H bonds between acid groups in neighboring layers and pi-pi intermolecular interactions. Circular dichroism spectra reveal chiro-optical activity in multilayered LB films.  相似文献

Over the past two decades, considerable efforts have been devoted to the development of conjugated polymeric materials for electronic applications due to the tunability of their properties through variation of their chemical structure. The LB technique is one of the most effective and precise methods for controlling the organization and thereby the properties of polymer films at the nanoscale for device fabrication. A detailed study was performed on the Langmuir-Schaefer (LS) monolayer and Langmuir-Blodgett-Kuhn (LBK) multilayer formation of newly designed conjugated poly(p-phenylene)s (C(n)PPPOH), incorporated with alkoxy groups with different chain lengths (C(6)H(13)O-, C(12)H(25)O-, and C(18)H(37)O-) and hydroxyl groups on the polymer backbone. The monolayer formed at the air-water interface was characterized using surface pressure-area isotherms, including hysteresis measurements. The films were then transferred to different hydrophilic solid substrates and analyzed using surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and AFM measurements. The results showed that the polymer with a short alkoxy chain (C(6)PPPOH) forms uniform monolayers at the air-water interface and can be transferred as multilayer films compared to C(12)PPPOH and C(18)PPPOH. The observed film thicknesses measured by SPR and AFM studies were similar to the theoretical value obtained in the case of C(6)PPPOH, whereas this was not the case with the other two polymers. The present study shows that the polymer C(n)PPPOH with short alkoxy chain can be transferred onto different solid substrates for device fabrication with molecular level control.  相似文献

This communication reports the formation of complex Langmuir monolayer at the air-water interface by charge transfer types of interaction with the water soluble N-cetyl N,N,N-trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) molecules doped with rosebengal (RB), with the stearic acid (SA) molecules of a preformed SA Langmuir monolayer. The reaction kinetics of the formation of RB-CTAB-SA complex monolayer was monitored by observing the increase in surface pressure with time while the barrier was kept fixed. Completion of interaction kinetics was confirmed by FTIR study. This complex Langmuir films at the air-water interface was transferred onto solid substrates at a desired surface pressure to form multilayered Langmuir-Blodgett films. Spectroscopic characterizations reveal some molecular level interactions as well as formation of microcrystalline aggregates depending upon the molar ratios of CTAB and RB within the complex LB films. Presence of two types of species in the complex LB films was confirmed by fluorescence spectroscopy.

A surfactant ion-pair complex, [Ru(bpy)(2)L][Eu(NTA)(4)](2) (in which L = 1-docosyl-2-(2- pyridyl)benzimidazole, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, and NTA = 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(2-naphthyl)-1,3-butanedionato) has been synthesized. The surface pressure-area isotherm measurements show that the complex forms a stable Langmuir film at the air-water interface without adding any electrolytes into the subphase. The monolayers formed at the surface pressures of 5 mN m(-1) and 20 mN m(-1), have been successfully transferred onto glass and quartz substrates with the transfer ratios close to unity. The Langmuir-Blodgett films were studied by UV-visible, infrared, and emission spectroscopies, atomic force microscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The optical, redox, and morphology properties of the LB films were found to be significantly affected by the target surface pressures used for the film depositions.  相似文献

Langmuir film properties, UV-vis spectroscopy, epifluorescence microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were used to study CdSe quantum dots (QDs) in 2D. By combining these results, it was possible to determine the molar absorptivity, limiting nanoparticle area, luminescence property, and arrangement of the QDs in the monolayer films at the air-water interface. Either trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) or 1-octadecanethiol (ODT) stabilized the QDs. The data collected reveal that TOPO forms close-packed monolayers on the surface of the QDs and that ODT-stabilized QDs undergo alkyl chains interdigitation. It was also found that varying the nanoparticle size, nature of surfactant, surface pressure, and mixed monolayers could help engineer the 2D self-assembly of the QDs at the air-water interface. Of practical importance is the transfer of these monolayer films onto hydrophilic or hydrophobic solid substrates, which could be successfully accomplished via the Langmuir-Blodgett film deposition technique.  相似文献

A novel amphiphilic Pt complex containing 2,6-bis(1-octadecylbenzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine (L18), [Pt(L18)Cl](PF6), has been synthesized. The complex exhibits concentration-dependent absorption and emission spectra in solution. With increasing the concentration of the Pt complex, we observed a new absorption band centered at 550 nm derived from a metal-metal d sigma* to ligand pi* charge transfer (MMLCT) transition and the corresponding broad emission centered at 650 nm. The Pt complex is surface-active, and the surface pressure-area isotherm reveals three phase transitions. The three phases correspond to one liquid-expanding phase and two solid-condensed phases, respectively, with different intermolecular overlap in the "flat-on" orientation at the air-water interface. Without additives such as fatty acids, the complex forms a stable and reproducible Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) multilayer film above a surface pressure of 15 mN m-1. Strong emission from the LB films, even monolayer, was observed. Comparing the relative emission intensity of the MMLCT band for transferred LB monolayer film with that for cast films, we concluded that Pt-Pt interactions are suppressed in the LB film. Instead, the emission at 600 nm arising from the ligand-ligand pi-pi interacted excited state became dominant. The results would provide the insight into the control of molecular ordering for planar Pt complexes from the viewpoint of characteristic excited states.  相似文献
