The economic and environmentally friendly flame‐retardant compound, tetramethyl (6‐chloro‐1,3,5‐triazine‐2,4‐diyl)bis(oxy)bis(methylene) diphosphonate ( CN‐1 ), was synthesized by a simple two‐step procedure from dimethyl phosphate, and its chemical structure was characterized by 1H, 13C, and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance and gas chromatography mass spectroscopy. Using the traditional pad–dry–cure method, we obtained several different add‐ons (wt%) by treating cotton twill fabric with flame retardant ( CN‐1 ). Thermogravimetric analysis, in an air and nitrogen atmosphere, of the modified cotton showed that decomposition occurred ~230°C with 16% residue weight char yield at 600°C, indicating high thermal stability for all treated levels. Limiting oxygen index (LOI) and the vertical flammability test were employed to determine the effectiveness of the flame‐retardant treatments on the fabrics. LOI values increased from ~18 vol% oxygen in nitrogen for untreated fabric to maximum of 34 vol% for the highest treatment level. Fabrics with higher levels of flame retardant also easily passed the vertical flammability test. Furthermore, Fourier transform infrared and scanning electron microscopy were utilized to characterize the chemical structure as well as the surface morphology of the flame‐retardant treated twill fabrics, including char area and the edge between unburned fabric and char area. A novel flame retardant diethyl 4‐methylpiperazin‐1‐ylphosphoramidate (CN‐3) containing phosphorous and nitrogen was prepared. Its chemical structure was confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance (1H‐, 13C‐, and 31P‐NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. Print cloth and twill fabrics were treated with CN‐3 to achieve different levels of add‐on (7–22 wt% add‐ons for print cloth and 3–18 wt% add‐ons for twill). Thermogravimetric analysis, vertical flame test, and limiting oxygen index (LOI) were performed on the treated cotton fabrics and showed promising results. When the treated print cloth and twill fabric samples were tested using the vertical flame test (ASTM D6413‐08), we observed that the ignited fabrics self‐extinguished and left behind a streak of char. Treated higher add‐ons fabrics were neither consumed by flame nor produced glowing ambers upon self‐extinguishing. LOI (ASTM 2863–09) was used to determine the effectiveness of the flame retardant on the treated fabrics. LOI values increased from 18 vol% oxygen in nitrogen for untreated print cloth and twill fabrics to maximum of 28 and 31 wt% for the highest add‐ons of print cloth and twill, respectively. The results from cotton fabrics treated with CN‐3 demonstrated a higher LOI value as well as a higher char yield because of the effectiveness of phosphorus and nitrogen as a flame retardant for cotton fabrics. Furthermore, FT‐IR and SEM were used to characterize the chemical structure on the treated fabrics as well as the surface morphology of char areas of treated and untreated fabrics. Published 2012. The effects of three nitrogen additives (urea, guanidine carbonate, and melamine formaldehyde) on the flame retardant action of cotton cellulose treated with tributyl phosphate (TBP) were investigated in this research. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) of treated cotton cellulose clearly revealed the synergistic interactions of TBP and nitrogen compounds. The Kissinger method was used to evaluate the kinetics of thermal decomposition on treated cellulose. The results show that adding nitrogen additives increases the activation energy at a higher degree of degradation, thus indicating better thermal stability at higher temperatures. Scanning electron microscope pictures of chars formed after a LOI test show the formation of protective polymeric coatings on char surfaces. Evaluating char surfaces using attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggests that these coatings are composed of species containing phosphorus-nitrogen-oxygen. Possible chemical interactions of phosphorus and nitrogen compounds during the burning process and the formation of a protective coating could be the reason for the observed synergism. Potential reaction pathways contributing to the formation of this protective polymeric coating have also been proposed.  相似文献

N-Methylol dimethylphosphonopropionamide (MDPA) is one of the most commonly used durable flame retardant agents for cotton. In our previous research, we developed a new flame retardant finishing system based on a hydroxy-functional organophosphorus oligomer (HFPO) and bonding agents, such as dimethyloldihydroxyethyleneurea (DMDHEU) and trimethylolmelamine (TMM). In this research, we compared the flame resistant performance as well as physical properties of the cotton fabric treated with these two flame retardant finishing systems. The cotton fabric treated with MDPA/TMM has a higher initial limiting oxygen index (LOI) than that of the fabric treated with HFPO/TMM due to higher nitrogen content in the system. The LOI of the cotton fabric treated with the HFPO and MDPA systems becomes identical when the treated fabric contains equal amount of phosphorus and nitrogen. The MDPA/TMM shows higher laundering durability on cotton than HFPO/TMM system. The fabric treated with HFPO/TMM and MDPA/TMM has low wrinkle resistance and low strength loss whereas the fabric stiffness significantly increases when the TMM concentration is increased.

This research explores the structural effect of phosphoramidates as flame retardants (FRs) for cotton cellulose. Flame retardant (FR) and thermal decomposition actions of phosphate such as triethyl phosphate (TEP), primary phosphoramidate such as diethyl phosphoramidate (DEPA) and secondary phosphoramidates such as phosphoramidic acid, N(2-hydroxy ethyl) diethylester (PAHEDE), diethyl ethyl phosphoramidate (DEEP) and diethyl 2-methoxyethylphosphoramidate (DEMEP) on cotton cellulose were investigated. Limiting oxygen index (LOI) of treated cotton cellulose showed that all phosphoramidates exhibited better flame retardant properties as compared to TEP. Secondary phosphoramidate PAHEDE had better flame retardant properties as compared to DEMEP and DEEP which indicate that flame retardancy of secondary phosphoramidates is structure related. Test performed on pyrolysis combustion flow calorimeter (PCFC) for treated cellulose showed higher reduction in heat of combustion for efficient FRs (PAHEDE, DEPA). Evolved gas analysis using thermogravimetric analyzer-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TGA-FTIR) and thermogravimetric analyzer-mass spectrometer (TGA-MS) of treated cellulose showed that phosphoramidates could catalyze the dehydration and char formation of cellulose at a lower temperature. The enhanced flame retardant action of phosphoramidate may be due to the catalytic thermal decomposition of the phosphoramidate structure to produce acidic intermediates which could react with cellulose to alter its thermal decomposition.  相似文献

A synergistic flame retardant (silicon, phosphorus and nitrogen) based on cyclic polysiloxane, ammonium salt of tetramethylcyclosiloxyl-piperazin-phosphinic acid (APCTSi) was successfully prepared and firmly bonded to cotton fabric through a chemical grafting method. The chemical structure of APCTSi was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, 1H and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR and 31P NMR). The scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM–EDX) proved that APCTSi successfully adhered to the surface of cotton fabric and the elements on the surface of cotton fabric were evenly distributed. The flame retardant properties were characterized by limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning test, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis and TG-FTIR. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) can reach 30.9% with a char length of 8.7 cm for the weight gain of APCTSi was 16.2%. The combustion behavior was characterized by cone calorimetry test. The peak heat release rate (pHRR) and total heat release (THR) values of treated cotton fabric decreased by 30% and 48% respectively compared to that of pure cotton fabric. All the results proved that the cotton fabric treated by APCTSi had the flame retardant effect of condensed phase (forming stable char layer) and gas phase (releasing nonflammable gases).

The effect of six organophosphorus compounds, including Pyrovatex CP (PCP), diammonium phosphate (DAP), phosphoric acid (PA), tributyl phosphate (TBP), triallyl phosphate (TAP) and triallyl phosphoric triamide (TPT) on the flame retardancy of cotton cellulose was studied. PCP, PA, and DAP are more efficient compared with the other three compounds in improving the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of cotton. The effectiveness of these compounds was investigated using scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of char formed after LOI tests, char content, activation energy of decomposition and heat of combustion data. SEM images showed that DAP, PCP and PA chars maintain the surface morphology during the burning process, which might be due to the formation of a protective layer or crosslinking effect. PA, PCP, and DAP treated fabrics have a higher activation energy of decomposition, higher char content and lower heat of combustion.  相似文献

A novel phosphorus‐containing silicone flame retardant (PDPSI) was prepared by Mannish reaction, and a series of PDPSI/PET composites were prepared by melt blending method. The nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), Fourier transformation infrared (FTIR), and the thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) results indicated that PDPSI showed network structure and owned good thermal stability, with the char residue of 62.2% at 800°C. The flame retardancy of PDPSI/PET composites was characterized by limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning tests (UL‐94), and cone calorimeter (CCT). The results revealed that the addition amount of PDPSI was 5%, the LOI value of PDPSI/PET composites increased to 27.3%, and UL‐94 test passed V‐0 rating. When the PDPSI loading was 3%, PET composites showed excellent flame retardancy and smoke suppression, with a decrease in the peak heat release rate (PHRR) by 71.19% and the total smoke release (TSP) reduced from 14.4 to 11.1m2. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and FTIR results of char residue demonstrated that the flame‐retardant mechanism of PDPSI was solid phase flame retardant. PDPSI catalyzed the aromatization reaction of PET to promote the formation of a dense and continuous carbon layer, finally improving the flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties of PET.  相似文献

In this research, we studied the mechanism of bonding a hydroxy-functional organophosphorus oligomer (HFPO) to nylon 6.6 fabric using the formaldehyde derivatives of urea and melamine, including dimethyloldihydroxyethyleneurea (DMDHEU) and trimethylolmelamine (TMM), as the bonding agents. The nylon fabric treated with HFPO/DMDHEU or HFPO/TMM retained significant amount of phosphorus after multiple launderings. The laundering durability of the HFPO applied to nylon was probably attributed to the formation of a crosslinked polymeric network on the nylon fiber. The nylon fabric treated with HFPO/DMDHEU showed higher percent phosphorus retention than that treated with HFPO/TMM. The percent phosphorus retention of the treated nylon increased as the DMDHEU or TMM concentration was increased, and the nylon fabric's stiffness follows the same trend. The micro-scale combustion calorimetry and thermal analysis data indicate that the HFPO bound to nylon reduced peak heat release rate and heat release capacity of the nylon fabric, decreased decomposition temperature and promoted the char formation of the treated fabric. The nylon/cotton blend military fabric treated with HFPO/DMDHEO or HFPO/TMM demonstrated flame retardant performance after 10 laundering cycles.  相似文献

Differential thermal analyses (DTA) were made on a series of polyester/cotton blend fabrics before and after treatment with Thpc—urea—poly(vinyl bromide). This flame retardant did not affect the polyester melting endotherm, which was proportional to the polyester content and appeared at approximately 250°C. In nitrogen atmosphere, DTA of the treated blends showed exothermic peaks at 285°C for the cotton decomposition. and at 415°C for the polyester decomposition. In air, DTA of the treated blends showed exothermic peaks at 333°C for cellulose decomposition, at 431°C for polyester decomposition and at 490°C for char decomposition. The Thpc-urea component of the flame retardant is effective on the cotton cellulose portion of the blend; the poly(vinyl bromide) appears to decompose and act in the vapor state on the polyester.  相似文献

A novel flame retardant containing cellulose, phosphorus and ferrum complex (Cell‐P‐Fe) was successfully synthesized and then it was used as flame retardants in epoxy resins (EP). Due to the present of acid sources and carbon sources, the Cell‐P‐Fe exhibits improved thermal stability and flame retardant properties. The EP/Cell‐P‐Fe composites with 10 wt% of Cell‐P‐Fe show remarkably improved LOI and UL‐94 values compared with the flame retardants without ferrum. At the loading of 10.0 wt% flame retardants, the char yield for EP/Cell‐P‐Fe composites increased to 29.1 wt%, indicating the improved thermal stability at high temperature. Moreover, thermogravimetric analysis, morphology of char residues and FTIR results demonstrate that stable char layers are formed on the surface of the composites during the combustion, attributing to the catalytic carbonization effect of Fe and phosphorus and the present of cellulose as carbon source. The stable char layers, which can protect the underlying materials from heat and oxygen, play an important role in the flame retardancy enhancement.  相似文献

The effect of phosphorus content on thermal degradation and burning behavior of poly(acryloyloxyethyl diethyl phosphate) or PADEP-coated cotton was studied. The results showed that PADEP-coated cotton prepared by admicellar polymerization using hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HTAB) as a surfactant has higher amounts of phosphorus than that prepared using dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB). Higher phosphorus content led to lower decomposition temperatures and greater amounts of char formation after thermal degradation. The effectiveness of the amount of phosphorus on the burning behavior of the treated cotton was investigated by an ASTM flammabilty test. In the case of PADEP-coated cotton prepared with DTAB, the flame spread slowly and extinguished with char formation on the fabric. For untreated cotton however, the flame spread quickly and burned the fabric entirely without char formation. Cotton coated with PADEP using HTAB exhibited self-extinguishing behavior after removing the ignition source. Decrease in decomposition temperature, increase in char formation and the burning behavior of PADEP-coated cotton are all consistent with phosphorus content on the treated fabric.  相似文献

New flame retardant system for poly(oxymethylene) (POM) has been studied. The combination of red phosphorus with novolac and melamine was found to act as an effective flame retardant of POM. The base POM exhibited very low limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of 15.3, while the flame retarded POM gave remarkably high LOI value of 37.5 and UL94 V-1 ranking without dripping at 0.8 mm thickness. The results of cone calorimetry, thermogravimetry and FTIR analysis suggested that the flame retarding mechanism is the intumescent char formation in the condensed phase. Novolac having a phenolic hydroxyl group is miscible with POM, and in the flaming process, red phosphorus yields phosphine and its acidic product such as phosphoric acid due to hydrolysis and oxidation reactions. In addition, all of novolac, melamine and phosphine are able to readily react with formaldehyde generated from POM during burning to give the reinforced and cross-linked char network through the polyaddition and polycondensation reactions. Therefore, the red phosphorus/novolac/melamine ternary combination system could synergistically promote the high flame retardancy of POM without the flaming drips.  相似文献

A carbonization agent, 3,9‐di (2‐hydroxyisopropyl)‐2,4,8,10‐tetraoxa‐3,9‐diphosphaspiro‐[5,5]‐undecane (SPEPO), was synthesized from pentaerythritol (PER), phosphorus trichloride, formic acid, and acetone as raw materials. The structure of SPEPO was characterized by FTIR and 1H‐NMR. As a carbonization agent and an acid source, SPEPO can form a novel intumescent flame‐retardant (IFR) system for low density polyethylene (LDPE) together with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and melamine phosphate (MP). The flame retardancy and thermal behavior of the IFR system for LDPE were investigated by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94 test, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). When the weight ratio of SPEPO, APP, and MP is 7:7:1 and their total loading level is 30%, the IFR‐LDPE presents the optimal flame retardancy (LOI value of 27.6 and UL‐94 V‐0 rating). However, SPEPO, APP, or MP can only show a very poor flame‐retardant performance when used alone. This indicates that there is a synergistic effect among SPEPO, APP, and MP. TGA results obtained in air demonstrate that SPEPO has an ability of char formation itself, and the char residue of SPEPO can reach 24 wt% at 700°C. The IFR can change the thermal degradation behavior of LDPE, enhance Tmax of the decomposition peak of LDPE, and promote LDPE to form char based on the calculated and the experimental data of residues. According to the results of Py‐GC/MS in combination with FTIR of the char residues at different temperatures, a possible flame‐retardant mechanism has been proposed. Effective testing methods are critical for developing new flame retardant textiles by the industry. However, the current testing methods all have limitations. In this research, we applied micro-scale combustion calorimetry (MCC) for evaluating the flammability of the cotton woven fabric treated with a traditional reactive organophosphorus flame retardant in combination with a synergistic nitrogen-containing additive and the nylon-6,6 woven fabric treated with a hydroxyl-functional organophosphorus oligomer and crosslinkers. We found that MCC is capable of differentiating small differences among the treated fabric samples with similar flammability. MCC is able to make quantitative measurement of the peak heat release rate, the most important parameter related to fire hazard of materials, of textile whereas such analysis is more difficult using cone calorimetry due to textile fabrics’ low thickness. By using the thermal combustion parameters measured by MCC, we were able to calculate the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of various treated cotton fabric samples with near-perfect agreement between the experimentally measured and the predicted LOI values of treated cotton fabrics. We also compared the capability of MCC and differential scanning calorimetry for analyzing flame retardant cotton textiles.  相似文献

Pentaerythritol diphosphonate melamine-urea-formaldehyde resin salt, a novel cheap macromolecular intumescent flame retardants (IFR), was synthesized, and its structure was a caged bicyclic macromolecule containing phosphorus characterized by IR. Epoxy resins (EP) were modified with IFR to get the flame retardant EP, whose flammability and burning behavior were characterized by UL 94 and limiting oxygen index (LOI). 25 mass% of IFR were doped into EP to get 27.2 of LOI and UL 94 V-0. The thermal properties of epoxy resins containing IFR were investigated with thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermogravimetry (DTG). Activation energy for the decomposition of samples was obtained using Kissinger equation. The resultant data show that for EP containing IFR, compared with EP, IFR decreased mass loss, thermal stability and R max, increased the char yield. The activation energy for the decomposition of EP is 230.4 kJ mol−1 while it becomes 193.8 kJ mol−1 for EP containing IFR, decreased by 36.6 kJ mol−1, which shows that IFR can catalyze decomposition and carbonization of EP.  相似文献

An intumescent flame retardant spirocyclic pentaerythritol bisphosphorate disphosphoryl melamine (SPDPM) has been synthesized and its structure was characterized by Fourier transformed infrared spectrometry (FTIR), 1H and 31P nuclear magnetic resonances (NMR). A series of polylactide (PLA)-based flame retardant composites containing SPDPM were prepared by melt blending method. The combustion properties of PLA/SPDPM composites were evaluated through UL-94, limiting oxygen index (LOI) tests and microscale combustion calorimetry (MCC) experiments. It is found that SPDPM integrating acid, char and gas sources significantly improved the flame retardancy and anti-dripping performance of PLA. When 25 wt% flame retardant was added, the composites achieved UL-94 V0, and the LOI value was increased to 38. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the weight loss rate of PLA was decreased by introduction of SPDPM. In addition, the thermal degradation process and possible flame retardant mechanism of PLA composites with SPDPM were analyzed by in situ FTIR.  相似文献
