This paper presents results from numerical simulations of a 3-bladed horizontal axis tidal stream turbine. Initially, Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) k–ω Shear Stress Transport eddy-viscosity and Launder–Reece–Rodi models were used for code validation and testing of a newly implemented sliding mesh technique for an unstructured finite volume code. Wall- and blade-resolved large-eddy simulations (LES) were then performed to study the complete geometry at various tip speed ratios (TSR). Thrust and power coefficients were compared to published experimental measurements obtained from a towing tank for a range of TSR (4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10) at a fixed hub pitch angle. A strong meandering is observed downstream of the supporting tower due to interaction between the detached tip vortices and vortex shedding from the support structure. The wake profiles and rate of recovery of velocity deficit show high sensitivity to the upstream turbulence intensities. However, the mean thrust and power coefficients were found to be less sensitive to the upstream turbulence. Comparisons between RANS and LES are also presented for the mean sectional blade pressures and mean wake velocity profiles. The paper also presents an overview of modelling and numerical issues relating to simulations for such rotating geometries.  相似文献

We present an original timesaving joint RANS/LES approach to simulate turbulent premixed combustion. It is intended mainly for industrial applications where LES may not be practical. It is based on successive RANS/LES numerical modelling, where turbulent characteristics determined from RANS simulations are used in LES equations for estimation of the subgrid chemical source and viscosity. This approach has been developed using our TFC premixed combustion model, which is based on a generalization of the Kolmogorov’s ideas. We assume existence of small-scale statistically equilibrium structures not only of turbulence but also of the reaction zones. At the same time, non-equilibrium large-scale structures of reaction sheets and turbulent eddies are described statistically by model combustion and turbulence equations in RANS simulations or follow directly without modelling in LES. Assumption of small-scale equilibrium gives an opportunity to express the mean combustion rate (controlled by small-scale coupling of turbulence and chemistry) in the RANS and LES sub-problems in terms of integral or subgrid parameters of turbulence and the chemical time, i.e. the definition of the reaction rate is similar to that of the mean dissipation rate in turbulence models where it is expressed in terms of integral or subgrid turbulent parameters. Our approach therefore renders compatible the combustion and turbulent parts of the RANS and LES sub-problems and yields reasonable agreement between the RANS and averaged LES results. Combining RANS simulations of averaged fields with LES method (and especially coupled and acoustic codes) for simulation of corresponding nonstationary process (and unsteady combustion regimes) is a promising strategy for industrial applications. In this work we present results of simulations carried out employing the joint RANS/LES approach for three examples: High velocity premixed combustion in a channel, combustion in the shear flow behind an obstacle and the impinging flame (a premixed flame attached to an obstacle).  相似文献

This study investigates the predictability of the aerodynamic performance of some numerical methods at low Reynolds numbers and their dependency on the geometric shape of airfoil. We conducted three-dimensional large-eddy simulations (3-D LES), two-dimensional laminar simulations (2-D Lam), and Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes simulations with Baldwin–Lomax (2-D RANS(BL)) and Spalart–Allmaras (2-D RANS(SA)) turbulence models. Although there is little discrepancy between the 3-D LES, 2-D Lam, and 2-D RANS(SA) results in terms of the lift and drag characteristics, significant differences are observed in the predictability of the separation and reattachment points. The predicted lift, separation, and reattachment points of the 2-D Lam are qualitatively similar to those of the 3-D LES, except for high angles of attack at which a massive separation occurs. The 2-D RANS(SA) shows good predictability of the lift and separation points, but it does not estimate reattachment points accurately. The 2-D RANS(BL) fails to predict the precise separation points, which results in a poor lift predictability. These characteristics appear regardless of the airfoil geometry shapes. The results suggest that a 2-D Lam without any turbulence models can be used to estimate qualitative airfoil aerodynamic characteristics at the low Reynolds numbers.  相似文献

A synthetic turbulence generation (STG) method for subsonic and supersonic flows at low and moderate Reynolds numbers to provide inflow distributions of zonal Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) – large-eddy simulation (LES) methods is presented. The STG method splits the LES inflow region into three planes where a local velocity signal is decomposed from the turbulent flow properties of the upstream RANS solution. Based on the wall-normal position and the local flow Reynolds number, specific length and velocity scales with different vorticity content are imposed at the inlet plane of the boundary layer. The quality of the STG method for incompressible and compressible zero-pressure gradient boundary layers is shown by comparing the zonal RANS–LES data with pure LES, pure RANS, and direct numerical simulation (DNS) solutions. The distributions of the time and spanwise wall-shear stress, Reynolds stress distributions, and two point correlations of the zonal RANS–LES simulations are smooth in the transition region and in good agreement with the pure LES and reference DNS findings. The STG approach reduces the RANS-to-LES transition length to less than four boundary-layer thicknesses.  相似文献

This paper investigates some important numerical aspects for the simulation of model rocket combustors. Precisely, (1) a new high‐order discretization technique (multi‐dimensional limiting process (MLP), low diffusion, and MLPld) is presented and compared with conventional second‐order schemes with different flux limiters. (2) Time accurate unsteady Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) simulations are performed to assess possible improvements in comparison with steady‐state RANS simulations. (3) Fully 3D simulations of an axisymmetric rocket combustor are compared with 2D axisymmetric ones. All studies are based on the Penn State preburner combustor experiment, which uses gaseous oxygen and hydrogen. This comprehensive study offers unique insight into how the mentioned numerical influence factors change the flow field, flame, and wall heat fluxes in the model rocket combustor. Because wall heat fluxes are known from the experiment only, numerical results are compared with LES of other authors, too. It will be shown that the high‐order spatial discretization significantly improves the agreement with measured wall heat fluxes at low additional computational cost. In general the transition from simple to more complex numerical approaches steadily improves the qualitative agreement between simulation and experiment. The main bottle neck for using large eddy simulations (LES) at high Reynolds number is the requirement of very fine meshes near walls. Hybrid LES-Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) was invented to get rid of this limitation. In this method, unsteady RANS (URANS) is used near walls and away from walls LES is used. The matching between URANS and LES takes place in the inner log-region. In the present paper, a method to improve standard LES-RANS is evaluated. The improvement consists of adding instantaneous turbulent fluctuations (forcing conditions) at the matching plane in order to provide the equations in the LES region with relevant turbulent structures. The fluctuations are taken from a DNS of a generic boundary layer. Simulations of fully developed channel flow and plane asymmetric diffuser flow are presented. Hybrid LES-RANS is used both with and without forcing conditions.  相似文献

This paper describes some significant steps made towards the numerical simulation of the noise radiated by the high-lift devices of a plane. Since the full numerical simulation of such configuration is still out of reach for present supercomputers, some hybrid strategies have been developed to reduce the overall cost of such simulations. The proposed strategy relies on the coupling of an unsteady nearfield CFD with an acoustic propagation solver based on the resolution of the Euler equations for midfield propagation in an inhomogeneous field, and the use of an integral solver for farfield acoustic predictions.In the first part of this paper, this CFD/CAA coupling strategy is presented. In particular, the numerical method used in the propagation solver is detailed, and two applications of this coupling method to the numerical prediction of the aerodynamic noise of an airfoil are presented.Then, a hybrid RANS/LES method is proposed in order to perform some unsteady simulations of complex noise sources. This method allows for significant reduction of the cost of such a simulation by considerably reducing the extent of the LES zone. This method is described and some results of the numerical simulation of the three-dimensional unsteady flow in the slat cove of a high-lift profile are presented. While these results remain very difficult to validate with experiments on similar configurations, they represent up to now the first 3D computations of this kind of flow.  相似文献

In this paper, Unsteady RANS (URANS) simulations and Large Eddy Simulations (LES) in the draft tube of a bulb turbine are presented with the objective to understand and locate the head losses in this turbine component. Three operating points of the turbine are considered. Numerical results are compared with experimental velocity measurements for validation. Thanks to a detailed analysis of the energy balance in the draft tube, the physical and hydrodynamic phenomena responsible for head losses in the draft tube are identified. Head losses are due to transfer of mean kinetic energy to the turbulent flow and viscous dissipation of kinetic energy. This occurs mainly in the central vortex structure and next to the walls in the draft tube. Head losses prediction is found to be dependent on the turbulence model used in the simulations, especially in URANS simulations. Using this analysis, the evolution of head losses between the three operating points is understood.  相似文献

Hybrid models have found widespread applications for simulation of wall‐bounded flows at high Reynolds numbers. Typically, these models employ Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) and large eddy simulation (LES) in the near‐body and off‐body regions, respectively. A number of coupling strategies between the RANS and LES regions have been proposed, tested, and applied in the literature with varying degree of success. Linear eddy‐viscosity models (LEVM) are often used for the closure of turbulent stress tensor in RANS and LES regions. LEVM incorrectly predicts the anisotropy of Reynolds normal stress at the RANS‐LES interface region. To overcome this issue, use of non‐linear eddy‐viscosity models (NLEVM) have started receiving attention. In this study, a generic non‐linear blended modeling framework for performing hybrid simulations is proposed. Flow over the periodic hills is used as the test case for model evaluation. This case is chosen due to complex flow physics with simplified geometry. Analysis of the simulations suggests that the non‐linear hybrid models show a better performance than linear hybrid models. It is also observed that the non‐linear closures are less sensitive to the RANS‐LES coupling and grid resolution. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This report provides an assessment of current turbulent flow calculation methods for hypersonic propulsion flowpaths, particularly the scramjet engine. Emphasis is placed on Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) methods, but some discussion of newer methods such as large eddy simulation (LES) is also provided. The report is organized by considering technical issues throughout the scramjet-powered vehicle flowpath, including laminar-to-turbulent boundary layer transition, shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interactions, scalar transport modeling (specifically the significance of turbulent Prandtl and Schmidt numbers), and compressible mixing. Unit problems are primarily used to conduct the assessment. In the combustor, results from calculations of a direct connect supersonic combustion experiment are also used to address the effects of turbulence model selection and in particular settings for the turbulent Prandtl and Schmidt numbers. It is concluded that RANS turbulence modeling shortfalls are still a major limitation to the accuracy of hypersonic propulsion simulations, whether considering individual components or an overall system. Newer methods such as LES-based techniques may be promising, but are not yet at a maturity to be used routinely by the hypersonic propulsion community. The need for fundamental experiments to provide data for turbulence model development and validation is discussed.  相似文献

In this work, we investigate a resolution evaluation criterion based on the ratio between turbulent length-scales and grid spacing within the context of dynamic resolution evaluation in hybrid LES/RANS simulations. A modified version of the commonly used length-scale criterion is adopted. The modified length-scale criterion is evaluated for a plane channel flow and compared to the criterion based on two-point correlations. Simulation results show qualitative agreement between the two criteria and physical predictions from both resolution indicators. These observations are confirmed by simulations of flows over periodic hills. It is further demonstrated that the length-scale based criterion is relatively less sensitive on variation of model parameters compared to criteria based on resolved percentage of turbulent quantities. The improved resolution criterion is applied in a dual-mesh hybrid LES/RANS solver. Numerical simulations with the hybrid solver suggest that the interactions between the length-scale resolution indicator and the solution are moderate, and that favorable comparisons with benchmark results are obtained. In summary, we demonstrate that the modified length-scale based resolution indicator performs satisfactorily in both pure LES and hybrid simulations. Therefore, it is selected as a promising candidate to provide reliable predictions of resolution adequacy for individual cells in hybrid LES/RANS simulations.  相似文献

In order to reduce the high computational effort of wall-resolved large-eddy simulations (LES), the present paper suggests a hybrid LES–RANS approach which splits up the simulation into a near-wall RANS part and an outer LES part. Generally, RANS is adequate for attached boundary layers requiring reasonable CPU-time and memory, where LES can also be applied but demands extremely large resources. Contrarily, RANS often fails in flows with massive separation or large-scale vortical structures. Here, LES is without a doubt the best choice. The basic concept of hybrid methods is to combine the advantages of both approaches yielding a prediction method, which, on the one hand, assures reliable results for complex turbulent flows, including large-scale flow phenomena and massive separation, but, on the other hand, consumes much fewer resources than LES, especially for high Reynolds number flows encountered in technical applications. In the present study, a non-zonal hybrid technique is considered (according to the signification retained by the authors concerning the terms zonal and non-zonal), which leads to an approach where the suitable simulation technique is chosen more or less automatically. For this purpose the hybrid approach proposed relies on a unique modeling concept. In the LES mode a subgrid-scale model based on a one-equation model for the subgrid-scale turbulent kinetic energy is applied, where the length scale is defined by the filter width. For the viscosity-affected near-wall RANS mode the one-equation model proposed by Rodi et al. (J Fluids Eng 115:196–205, 1993) is used, which is based on the wall-normal velocity fluctuations as the velocity scale and algebraic relations for the length scales. Although the idea of combined LES–RANS methods is not new, a variety of open questions still has to be answered. This includes, in particular, the demand for appropriate coupling techniques between LES and RANS, adaptive control mechanisms, and proper subgrid-scale and RANS models. Here, in addition to the study on the behavior of the suggested hybrid LES–RANS approach, special emphasis is put on the investigation of suitable interface criteria and the adjustment of the RANS model. To investigate these issues, two different test cases are considered. Besides the standard plane channel flow test case, the flow over a periodic arrangement of hills is studied in detail. This test case includes a pressure-induced flow separation and subsequent reattachment. In comparison with a wall-resolved LES prediction encouraging results are achieved.   相似文献

This paper presents hybrid Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) and large-eddy-simulation (LES) methods for the separated flows at high angles of attack around a 6:1 prolate spheroid. The RANS/LES hybrid methods studied in this work include the detached eddy simulation (DES) based on Spalart–Allmaras (S–A), Menter’s k–ω shear-stress-transport (SST) and k–ω with weakly nonlinear eddy viscosity formulation (Wilcox–Durbin+, WD+) models and the zonal-RANS/LES methods based on the SST and WD+ models. The switch from RANS near the wall to LES in the core flow region is smooth through the implementation of a flow-dependent blending function for the zonal hybrid method. All the hybrid methods are designed to have a RANS mode for the attached flows and have a LES behavior for the separated flows. The main objective of this paper is to apply the hybrid methods for the high Reynolds number separated flows around prolate spheroid at high-incidences. A fourth-order central scheme with fourth-order artificial viscosity is applied for spatial differencing. The fully implicit lower–upper symmetric-Gauss–Seidel with pseudo time sub-iteration is taken as the temporal differentiation. Comparisons with available measurements are carried out for pressure distribution, skin friction, and profiles of velocity, etc. Reasonable agreement with the experiments, accounting for the effect on grids and fundamental turbulence models, is obtained for the separation flows. The influences of the Schmidt number and fluid models of the Boussinesq approximation and variable density (low-Mach formulation) are investigated using large eddy simulation (LES) where fluid naturally advects between two tanks connected by a pipe. The geometry resembles a reactor-like vessel which comprises of a cold leg-downcomer region. The closed system consists of two miscible fluids with different densities and viscosities separated by a valve. Analysis with Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) is used for calculating Taylor length scales to establish minimum grid resolution for LES. Using particle image velocimetry (PIV) data, validation is conducted for four different magnitudes of Schmidt numbers. Evidence indicates that capturing the effects from the highest Schmidt number is essential for properly predicting fluctuations and instabilities in the flow. Although downcomer comparisons with PIV consist of larger errors, they are explained through additional sensitivity analyses involving initial conditions, geometry, and residual energy. Lastly, the influence of larger density differences is demonstrated using simulations with a higher Atwood number, temporally scaled using the fluid front velocity. Recommendations are made regarding future experiments and simulations for design of similar buoyant mixing problems.  相似文献

The interaction of an oblique shock wave with a turbulent boundary layer under conditions of incipient separation is analyzed by means of large-eddy simulation (LES) and Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) turbulence models, with the objective to explore their predictive capabilities, in particular with respect to the unsteady features of the interaction. Consistent with earlier direct numerical simulations, we have found that the flow dynamics in the interaction zone is characterized by strong intermittency associated with the formation of scattered spots of flow reversal near the nominal position of the reflected shock. Comparison with experimental results (at much larger Reynolds number) show that the qualitative features of the interaction are predicted reasonably well by both LES and RANS models. RANS models supplemented with a semi-empirical closure are also found to provide reasonable estimate of the fluctuating pressure loads at the wall.  相似文献

In this paper, direct numerical simulations (DNS) and large eddy simulations (LES) of three engineering flows carried out in the author's research group are presented. The first example, simulated both with DNS and LES, is the flow in a low-pressure turbine cascade with wakes passing periodically through the cascade channel. In this situation, the laminar–turbulent transition of the boundary layers on the blade surfaces, which is strongly influenced by the passing wakes, is of special interest. Next, LES of the flow past the Ahmed body is presented, which is a car model with slant back. In spite of the fairly simple geometry, the flow around the model has many features of the complex, fully 3D flow around real cars. The third example, for which LES is presented, is the flow past a surface mounted circular cylinder of height-to-diameter ratio of 2.5. In this case also complex 3D flow develops with interaction of various vortices behind the cylinder. By means of these examples, the paper shows that complex turbulent flows of engineering relevance can be predicted realistically by DNS and LES, albeit at large cost. The methods are particularly suited and superior to RANS methods for situations where unsteadiness like shedding and large-scale structures dominate the flow, and DNS has evolved into an important tool for studying transition mechanisms.  相似文献

Fundamental research on vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a circular cylinder is still needed to build more rational VIV analysis tools for slender marine structures. Numerical results are presented for the response of an elastically mounted rigid cylinder at low mass damping constrained to oscillate transversely to a free stream. A two-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) code equipped with the SST kω turbulence model is applied for the numerical calculations. The numerical results are compared in detail with recent experimental and computational work. The Reynolds-averaging procedure erases the random disturbances in the vortex shedding process, so that the comparison between experimental data and the numerical results obtained by RANS codes may reveal some random characteristics of the VIV response. How random disturbance affects the observation in the experiments is discussed in this paper and the issues influencing the appearance of the upper branch in experiments are especially investigated. The absence of the upper branch in RANS simulations is explained in depth on account of discrepancies, which exist between experiments and RANS simulations. In addition, the formation of the 2P vortex shedding mode and its transition through the lock-in region are well reproduced in this investigation.  相似文献

Designs of future combustors increasingly rely on numerical combustion simulations. Large-eddy simulation (LES) emerged as a method to better describe turbulence than Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) approaches. Processes at the subgrid scale, however, need to be modelled. Validation using comprehensive and reliable experimental data sets is therefore a crucial part in the development of combustion-LES. Using well-defined benchmark flames and advanced laser diagnostics, different physical and chemical quantities can be precisely measured with high temporal and reasonable spatial resolution. In this contribution, quantities important to combustion-LES validation and the most frequently used laser diagnostic methods are briefly reviewed. New challenges in the field of diagnostics at high repetition rates and at walls are highlighted. In a closing chapter, some critical aspects on the comparison of experimental measurands and combustion-LES-predicted counterparts are discussed.  相似文献

Hybrid approach combining large eddy simulation (LES) with the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equation (RANS) is expected to accurately simulate wall-bounded turbulent flows at high Reynolds numbers. As an important issue in developing hybrid methods, it is known that the log layers in the RANS and LES regions are not lined up in hybrid RANS/LES simulations of channel flow. Although several methods including additional filtering near the RANS/LES interface have been proposed to eliminate the log-layer mismatch, there is no obvious physical justification for the methods and some ad hoc tuning is necessary. In this work, the commutation error terms in the filtered velocity equations are investigated to justify the method of additional filtering. It is shown that the additional filtering can be considered as a finite difference approximation to extra terms due to the non-commutivity between the hybrid filter and the spatial derivative. Moreover, an expression determining the filter width and its location for the additional filtering is obtained. To validate the expression, a hybrid simulation of channel flow is carried out. The additional filtering with the filter width derived is shown to be effective in eliminating the log-layer mismatch and improving the mean velocity profile.  相似文献
