In this work, graphene nanoplatelet (GNP) filled polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) composites were prepared using solution method via a specially designed route and relatively high thermal conductivities of the composites were achieved at a low GNP loading. The effect of GNP content on rheological behavior, thermal and electrical conductivity of the composites was intensively investigated. Thermorheological complexity was displayed at elevated GNP loading, and the rheological percolation threshold of GNP in PMMA decreased from 7.96 wt% at 220 °C to 4.02 wt% at 260 °C according to Winter-Chambon method, suggesting that GNP was more likely to form a seepage network at higher temperature. The DMTA results showed that the increase in moduli of the composites should be ascribed to the formation of the GNP-GNP network structure. The electrical conductivity of the composites underwent a sudden jump by seven orders of magnitude, which also indicated the formation of a GNP conductive pathway in the matrix with an electrical percolation threshold of 2–4 wt%. The results of transient temperature measurement were in good consistent with the thermal conductivity versus GNP loading, which was compared with various thermal conduction models with a modified Agari model presenting an acceptable evaluation of the dispersion status of GNP in the matrix. The experimental electrical and thermal conductivities as a function of GNP content could well be interpreted by the filler network structure as observed in morphological studies.  相似文献

Carbon fillers including multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), carbon black (CB) and graphite were introduced in a cyanate ester (CE) resin, respectively. The effects of the fillers on the electrical and thermal conductivity of the resin were measured and analyzed based on the microscopic observations. MWCNTs, CB and graphite exhibited percolation threshold at 0.1 wt%, 0.5 wt% and 10 wt%, respectively. The maximal electrical conductivity of the composites was 1.08 S/cm, 9.94 × 10−3 S/cm and 1.70 × 10−5 S/cm. MWCNTs showed the best enhancement on the electrical conductivity. The thermal behavior of the composites was analyzed by calorimetry method. Incorporation of MWCNTs, CB and graphite increased the thermal conductivity of CE resin by 90%, 15% and 92%, respectively. Theoretical models were introduced to correlate the thermal conductivity of the CE/MWCNTs composite. The interfacial thermal resistance between CE resin and MWCNTs was 8 × 10−8 m2K/W and the straightness ratio was 0.2. The MWCNTs were seriously entangled and agglomerated. Simulation results revealed that thermal conductivity of the CE/MWCNTs composites can be substantially elevated by increasing the straightness ratio and/or filler content of MWCNTs.  相似文献

Electrically conductive polypropylene/graphite (PP/graphite) composites were prepared via blending granulated PP with maleic anhydride grafted PP and natural graphite. Electrical conductivity of prepared samples containing either 65, 70, or 75 wt% of graphite was measured and the most conductive sample containing 75 wt% of graphite was exposed to UV irradiation for 1 and 24 h or thermally treated at 170 °C for 1 h. The influence of thermal and UV exposure on the structural and electrical changes in such treated samples was studied. Local current measurements on the surface were made using scanning spreading resistance microscopy and morphology of the surface was studied by atomic force microscopy. X-ray diffraction analysis, infrared and Raman spectroscopy were also used for the structural characterization. Properties of treated and untreated samples are compared and differences are discussed.  相似文献

Lightweight conductive polymers are considered for lightning strike mitigation in composites by synthesizing intrinsically conductive polymers (ICPs) and by the inclusion of conductive fillers in insulating matrices. Conductive films based on polyaniline (PANI) and graphene have been developed to improve through‐thickness conductivity of polymer composites. The result shows that the conductivity of PANI enhanced by blending polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and PANI in 3:1 ratio. Conductive composite thin films are prepared by dispersing graphene in PANI. The conductivity of composite films was found to increase by 40× at 20 wt% of graphene inclusion compared with PVP and PANI blend. Fourier‐transform‐infrared (FTIR) spectra confirmed in situ polymerization of the polymer blend. The inclusion of graphene also exhibits an increase in Tg by 21°C. Graphene additions also showed an increase in thermal stability by approximately 148°C in the composite films. The mechanical result obtained from DMA shows that inclusion of graphene increases the tensile strength by 48% at 20 wt% of graphene reinforcement. A thin, highly conductive surface that is compatible with a composite resin system can enhance the surface conductivity of composites, improving its lightning strike mitigation capabilities.  相似文献

Alumina particles were incorporated in poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) matrix in company with multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) for improving the thermal and electrical conductivities. The concentration of MWCNT was increased from 0 to 10 wt% to PDMS at fixed amounts of alumina (200 and 300 wt% to PDMS). Thermal conductivity of PDMS composites was increased with the increasing amount of MWCNT and the excellent dispersibility of the incorporated pristine MWCNT was achieved. Thermal and electrical conductivities of the composites were increased with the increasing concentration of the alumina because the alumina particles help disperse MWCNT within the PDMS matrix due to the ball milling effect during compounding. The properties of the alumina and MWCNT incorporated PDMS composites were investigated in terms of the curing characteristics, electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity. The MWCNT/alumina incorporated composite showed the high electrical conductivity to the level of the semiconductor.  相似文献

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were non-covalently functionalized by surface wrapping of poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) with the aid of ultrasound. The functionalized CNTs were incorporated into poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) through solution coagulation to fabricate CNTs filled PBS nanocomposites. The morphologies of the PBS/CNT nanocomposites were studied by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM), and the effect of loading of functionalized CNT on the rheological behavior, electrical conductivity and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites was investigated systemically. SEM observation indicates that functionalized CNTs dispersed in PBS matrix without obvious aggregation and showed good interfacial adhesion with the PBS phase. TEM observation reveals that a CNT network was formed when the loading of CNTs increased from 0.1 to 0.3 wt%. Rheological investigation indicates the formation of a CNT network with a percolation threshold of only 0.3 wt%. Significant improvement in electrical conductivity occurred at CNT loading of 0.3 wt%, with the value of electrical conductivity increasing by six orders of magnitude compared to neat PBS. Differential scanning calorimetry indicates that the melt crystallization temperature of PBS was improved by ∼14 °C with addition of only 0.05 wt% functionalized CNTs. Tensile tests indicate that both the yield strength and Young's modulus of PBS were apparently reinforced by incorporation of functionalized CNTs, while the elongation at break was reduced gradually.  相似文献

New hydrophobic protic ionic liquid, 2-butylaminoimidazolinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (BAIM-TFSI), has been synthesized. The ionic liquid showed good thermal stability to at least 350 °C. The conductivity of BAIM-TFSI determined by electrochemical impedance method was found to be 5.6 × 10?2 S/cm at 140 °C. Homogeneous composite films based on commercial polyimide (PI) Matrimid and BAIM-TFSI containing 30–60 wt% of ionic liquid were prepared by casting from methylene chloride solutions. Thermogravimetric analysis data indicated an excellent thermal stability of PI/BAIM-TFSI composites and thermal degradation points in the temperature range 377 °C–397 °C. The addition of ionic liquid up to 50 wt% in PI films does not lead to any significant deterioration of the tensile strength of the polymer. The dynamic mechanical analysis results indicated both an increase of storage modulus E′ of PI/BAIM-TFSI composites at room temperature and a significant E′ decrease with temperature compared with the neat polymer. The cross-linking of the PI with polyetheramine Jeffamine D-400 allowed to prepare PI/Jeffamine/BAIM-TFSI (50%) membrane with E′ value of 300 MPa at 130 °C. The ionic conductivity of this cross-linked composite membrane reached the level of 10?2 S/cm at 130 °C, suggesting, therefore, its potential use in medium-temperature fuel cells operating in water-free conditions.  相似文献

Electrically and thermally conductive high‐density polyethylene composites filled with hybrid fillers, multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and silver nanoparticles (Ag‐NPs), have been prepared in the melt state. The investigation of their electrical and thermal conductivities while comparing with high‐density polyethylene/MWCNT binary composites shows that the addition of only 3 vol% of Ag‐NPs does not reduce the electrical percolation threshold (Pc) that remains as low as 0.40 vol% of MWCNTs but leads to an increase in the maximum dc electrical conductivity of PE/MWCNT composites by two orders of magnitudes. Moreover, the association of both Ag‐NPs and carbon nanotube particles improved our composite's thermal conductivity. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Blends of poly(butadiene-co-acrylonitrile) elastomer [NBR] and polyaniline dodecylbenzenesulfonate [PAni.DBSA], with electrical conductivities up to 10−2 S cm−1, have been prepared by solution mixing and casting. Miscibility was maximised for NBR with high acrylonitrile (ACN) content, as predicted on the basis of simple solubility parameter calculations. Blends prepared using NBR with 48 wt% ACN had the lowest electrical conductivity percolation thresholds, and were much more conductive than previous thermally mixed blends. Optical and electron micrographs of blends prepared from NBR 48 wt% ACN also showed the lowest levels of phase separation. The FT-IR spectra of NBR-PAni.DBSA blends resembled a superposition of the spectra of the pure materials, but with significant peak shifts due to changing intermolecular interactions between the polymers. Under DSC analysis, thermal events for blends prepared with NBR 48 wt% ACN also showed the largest temperature shifts relative to those for the pure polymers, supporting the other evidence for interaction between the two polymers.  相似文献

Graphite was dispersed in immiscible polyvinylidene fluoride/maleated polypropylene (PVDF/PPgMA) blends to improve electrical and thermal conductive properties by building a double‐percolation structure. The morphology of PVDF/PPgMA blends was first investigated for several compositions by selective solvent extraction, scanning electron microscopy, and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. Blends of PVDF and PPgMA were prepared in different relative fractions, and a PVDF/PPgMA ratio of 7/3 showed a well‐co‐continuous structure. From this blend, the morphology and properties of composites with different concentrations of graphite were investigated to prepare double‐percolated structures. Graphite was observed to selectively localize in the PPgMA phase. The electrical and thermal conductive properties of graphite‐containing blends were measured, showing enhanced conductivity for the double‐percolation structures compared with single‐polymer composites containing the same graphite loadings. Carbon nanofiber (CNF) composites have the potential for creating inexpensive, semiconducting polymers. These composites require a homogeneous dispersion within the polymer. Many groups have focused on high shear methods such as twin screw extrusion. Although high shear methods produce a homogeneous dispersion, the aspect ratio of the nanofibers is reduced by the mechanical force. In this report, we present results for low shear composite formation via in situ polymerization of cyclic oligomeric carbonates. The composites were characterized by thermal gravimetric analysis, electrical conductivity, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The composites exhibit minimal aggregation of the carbon nanofibers even at high weight percents. The polycarbonate/CNF composites exhibit an electrical conductivity percolation threshold of 6.3 wt% which is higher compared with similar CNF composites. The composites also show an increase in thermal stability of 40 °C as the CNF loading increases from 0 to 9 wt%.

Inclusion of conductive particles is a convenient way for the enhancement of electrical and thermal conductivities of polymers. However, improvement of the mechanical properties of such composites has remained a challenge. In this work, maleated polyethylene is proposed as a novel matrix for the production of conductive metal–thermoplastic composites with enhanced mechanical properties. The effects of two conductive particles (iron and aluminum) on the morphological, mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties of maleated polyethylene were investigated. Morphological observations revealed that the matrix had excellent adhesion with both metal particles. Increase in particle concentration was shown to improve the tensile strength and modulus of the matrix significantly with iron being slightly more effective. Through‐plane electrical conductivity of maleated polyethylene was also substantially improved after adding iron particles, while percolation was observed at particle contents of around 20–30% vol. In the case of aluminum, no percolation was observed for particle contents of up to 50% vol., which was linked to the orientation of the particles in the in‐plane direction due to the squeezing flow. Inclusion of particles led to substantial increase (over 700%) in the thermal conductivities of both composites. The addition of high concentrations of metal particles to matrix led to the creation of two groups of materials: (i) composites with high electrical and thermal conductivities and (ii) composites with low electrical and high thermal conductivities. Such characteristics of the composites are expected to provide a unique opportunity for applications where a thermally conductive/electrically insulating material is desired. In this work we present the preparation of conductive polyethylene/carbon nanotube composites based on the segregated network concept. Attention has been focused on the effect of decreasing the amount of filler necessary to achieve low resistivity. Using high- and low-grade single-walled carbon nanotube materials we obtained conductive composites with a low percolation threshold of 0.5 wt.% for high-grade nanotubes, about 1 wt% for commercial nanotubes and 1.5 wt% for low-grade material. The higher percolation threshold for low-grade material is related to low effectiveness of other carbon fractions in the network formation. The electrical conductivity was measured as a function of the single-walled carbon nanotubes content in the polymer matrix and as a function of temperature. It was also found that processing parameters significantly influenced the electrical conductivity of the composites. Raman spectroscopy was applied to study single wall nanotubes in the conductive composites.  相似文献

Simultaneous functionalization and reduction of graphene oxide(GO) is realized by refluxing of GO suspension with polyetheramine(D2000) followed by thermal treatment at 120 °C. Compared to GO, the D2000-treated GO(GOD2000) becomes hydrophobic, thermally stable and highly conductive with an electrical conductivity of 11 S/m, which is almost 8 orders of magnitude higher than that of GO. Due to the high conductivity and improved dispersion of GO-D2000, its epoxy nanocomposites exhibit a sharp transition from electrically insulating to conducting with a low percolation threshold of 0.71 vol%. With 3.6 wt% GO-D2000, the glass transition temperature of the epoxy nanocomposite is 27 K higher than that of neat epoxy.  相似文献

Gel polymer composites electrolytes containing nano LiAlO2 as filler were prepared using a solution cast technique and characterized using different techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal analysis (TG, DSC), Fourier transform infra – red spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). X-ray diffraction analysis showed the effect of lithium tri fluoro methane sulphonate (LiCF3SO3), poly vinyl acetate (PVAc) and nano lithium aluminate (LiAlO2) on the crystalline structure of the poly vinylidene fluoride –co– hexa fluoro propylene (PVDF-co-HFP) matrix containing ethylene carbonate (EC) and diethyl carbonate (DEC) as plasticizers. FT-IR analysis confirmed both the good dissolution of the LiCF3SO3 salt and the good interaction of the nano LiAlO2 filler with the polymer matrix. TG analysis showed the good thermal stability of the LiAlO2 samples compared to the free one. Also, addition of nano LiAlO2 filler enhanced the conductivity value of the polymer composites electrolytes. The sample containing 2 wt% of LiAlO2 showed the highest conductivity value, 4.98 × 10−3 Ω −1 cm−1 at room temperature, with good thermal stability behavior (Td = 362 °C). This good conductive and thermally stable polymer nano composite electrolyte was evaluated as a promising membrane for lithium ion batteries application.  相似文献

Nanosized carbon black (CB) was introduced into polypropylene/maleic anhydride-grafted polyolefin elastomer/intumescent flame retardant (PP/POE-MA/IFR) system to investigate the effect of nanofiller as synergist on thermal, electrical and mechanical properties of polymer composites. With 5 mass% CB into PP/POE-MA/IFR system (POFC5), the Tmax (corresponded to the temperature at the maximum mass loss rate) under air was increased by 122.4 °C; its limited oxygen index was as high as 31.4%; its vertical burning rating (UL-94) reached V0, and the peak value of heat release rate was decreased to only 19% of neat PP in cone calorimeter testing. Moreover, PP composites exhibited good electrical conductivity with more than 1.6 mass% CB, which is a low loading level to reach the critical percolation concentration. In addition, a good balance on stiffness and toughness of PP composites was achieved; especially, Young’s moduli and impact strength of POFC5 were increased to 1.26 and 2.5 times in comparison with that of neat PP, respectively. These results indicated that CB was an effective synergist in multi-component PP composites to simultaneously improve thermal, electrical and mechanical properties.

Summary: In this study, two samples of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) were synthesized by CVD of acetylene over Fe2Co catalysts supported by CaCO3 using different temperatures. The material produced at 660 °C (MWNT600) shows slightly better performance as evidenced by lower mean tube diameter and better conductivity as compared to the sample produced at 700 °C (MWNT700). In addition, it has a higher [O]:[C] ratio. Both materials were incorporated into polycarbonate using melt mixing using a small scale compounder. The results prove that these materials are very suitable for polymer composite applications as they show low electrical percolation concentration and good mechanical enhancement. The percolation threshold is as low as <0.875 wt% for MWNT660 and <1 wt% for MWNT700. MWNT700 showed slightly better dispersability as evidenced from light microscopy, SEM, and TEM. The effects in the stress-strain curves are similar in both composites, indicating a stress increase with MWNT incorporation.  相似文献

Conductive poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) composites containing surface-modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared by a simple heterocoagulation process in water. Two different types of MWCNT were used and compared: carboxylated MWCNT and cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB)-stabilized MWCNT. Aqueous PTFE dispersion was mixed with the well-dispersed MWCNT dispersions and they were heterocoagulated with the aid of a flocculant, polyaluminum chloride at an elevated temperature. After particle growth and successive stabilization step, particulated PTFE/MWCNT composites were prepared in the size range of 10–100 μm. The MWCNT-containing PTFE composites have improved thermal stability and electrical conductivity. Importantly, the percolation threshold for the electrical conductivity was achieved at a low concentration of MWCNT using this heterocoagulation process.  相似文献

The size effect of silica nanoparticles (SiO2) on thermal decomposition of poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) was investigated by the controlled rate thermogravimetry. Thermal degradation temperature of PMMA–SiO2 composites depended on both fraction and size of SiO2, the thermal degradation temperature of 23 nm (diameter) SiO2–PMMA (6.1 wt%) was 13.5 °C higher than that of PMMA. The thermal stabilities of 17 nm SiO2–PMMA (3.2 wt%) and 13 nm SiO2–PMMA (4.8 wt%) were 21 and 23 °C, respectively, higher than that of PMMA without SiO2. The degree of degradation improvement was increased linearly with the surface area of SiO2. The number of surface hydroxyl group in unit volume of SiO2 particle increased with increasing the specific surface area of SiO2, and the interaction between hydroxide group of SiO2 and carbonyl group of PMMA had an important role to improve the thermal stability of PMMA.  相似文献
