The synergism in the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of ternary systems based on benzoxazine (B), epoxy (E), and phenolic (P) resins is reported. The systems show the maximum Tg up to about 180 °C in BEP541 (B/E/P = 5/4/1). Adding a small fraction of phenolic resin enhances the crosslink density and, therefore, the Tg in the copolymers of benzoxazine and epoxy resins. To obtain the ultimate Tg in the ternary systems, 6–10 wt % phenolic resin is needed. The molecular rigidity from benzoxazine and the improved crosslink density from epoxy contribute to the synergistic behavior. The mechanical relaxation spectra of the fully cured ternary systems in a temperature range of −140 to 350 °C show four types of relaxation transitions: γ transition at −80 to −60 °C, β transition at 60–80 °C, α1 transition at 135–190 °C, and α2 transition at 290–300 °C. The partially cured specimens show an additional loss peak that is frequency‐independent as a result of the further curing process of the materials. The ternary systems have a potential use as electronic packaging molding compounds as well as other highly filled systems. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Smart materials, such as thin‐film piezoelectric polymers, are interesting for potential applications on Gossamer spacecraft. This investigation aims to predict the performance and long‐term stability of the piezoelectric properties of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and its copolymers under conditions simulating the low‐Earth‐orbit environment. To examine the effects of temperature on the piezoelectric properties of PVDF, poly(vinylidenefluoride‐co‐trifluoroethylene), and poly(vinylidenefluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene), the d33 piezoelectric coefficients were measured up to 160 °C, and the electric displacement/electric field (D–E) hysteresis loops were measured from ?80 to +110 °C. The room‐temperature d33 coefficient of PVDF homopolymer films, annealed at 50, 80, and 125 °C, dropped rapidly within a few days of thermal exposure and then remained unchanged. In contrast, the TrFE copolymer exhibited greater thermal stability than the homopolymer, with d33 remaining almost unchanged up to 125 °C. The HFP copolymer exhibited poor retention of d33 at temperatures above 80 °C. In situ D–E loop measurements from ?80 to +110 °C showed that the remanent polarization of the TrFE copolymer was more stable than that of the PVDF homopolymer. D–E hysteresis loop and d33 results were also compared with the deflection of the PVDF homopolymer and TrFE copolymer bimorphs tested over a wide temperature range. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A semicrystalline ethylene‐hexene copolymer (PEH) was subjected to a simple thermal treatment procedure as follows: the sample was isothermally crystallized at a certain isothermal crystallization temperature from melt, and then was quenched in liquid nitrogen. Quintuple melting peaks could be observed in heating scan of the sample by using differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). Particularly, an intriguing endothermic peak (termed as Peak 0) was found to locate at about 45 °C. The multiple melting behaviors for this semicrystalline ethylene‐hexene copolymer were investigated in details by using DSC. Wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) technique was applied to examine the crystal forms to provide complementary information for interpreting the multiple melting behaviors. Convincing results indicated that Peak 0 was due to the melting of crystals formed at room temperature from the much highly branched ethylene sequences. Direct heating scans from isothermal crystallization temperature (Tc, 104–118 °C) were examined for comparison, which indicated that the multiple melting behaviors depended on isothermal crystallization temperature and time. A triple melting behavior could be observed after a relatively short isothermal crystallization time at a low Tc (104–112 °C), which could be attributed to a combination of melting of two coexistent lamellar stack populations with different lamellar thicknesses and the melting‐recrystallization‐remelting (mrr) event. A dual melting behavior could be observed for isothermal crystallization with both a long enough time at a low Tc and a short or long time at an intermediate Tc (114 °C), which was ascribed to two different crystal populations. At a high Tc (116–118 °C), crystallizable ethylene sequences were so few that only one single broad melting peak could be observed. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The mechanical properties of linear and V‐shaped compositional gradient copolymer of styrene and n‐butyl acrylate with composition of around 55 wt % styrene were investigated by comparing with their block copolymer counterparts. Compared with their block copolymer counterparts, the gradient copolymers showed lower elastic modulus, much larger elongation at break, and similar ultimate tensile strength at room temperature. This performance could be ascribed to that the local moduli continuously change from the hardest nanodomains to the softest nanodomains in the gradient copolymer, which alleviates the stress concentration during tensile test. Compared with the V‐shaped gradient (VG) copolymer, the linear gradient copolymer showed much higher elastic modulus but lower elongation at break. The mechanical properties of the gradient copolymers were more sensitive to the change in temperature from 9 °C to 75 °C. With recovery temperature increased from 10 °C to 60 °C, the strain recovery of VG copolymer would change steadily from 40% to 99%. However, the elastic recovery of linear and triblock copolymer was poor even at 60 °C. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Phys. 2015 , 53, 860–868  相似文献

A trifunctional benzoxazine, 1,3,5‐tris(3‐phenyl‐3,4‐dihydro‐2H‐benzo[1,3]oxazin‐6‐yl)benzene (T‐Bz) was synthesized and in an effort to reduce its curing temperature (curing maxima at 238 °C), it was mixed with various phenolic nucleophiles such as phenol (PH), p‐methoxy phenol (MPH), 2‐methyl resorcinol (MR), hydroquinone (HQ), pyrogallol (PG), 2‐naphthol (NPH), 2,7‐dihydroxy naphthalene (DHN), and 1,1'‐bi‐2‐naphthol (BINOL). The influence of these phenolic nucleophiles on ring‐opening polymerization temperature of T‐Bz was examined by DSC and FTIR analysis. T‐Bz undergoes a complete ring‐opening addition reaction in the presence of bi‐ and trifunctional phenolic nucleophiles (MR/HQ/PG/DHN) at 140 °C (heated for 3 h) and forms a networked polybenzoxazine (NPBz). The NPBzs showed a high thermal stability with Td20 of 350–465 °C and char yield of 67–78% at 500 °C; however, a diminutive weight loss (6.9–9.8%) was observed at 150–250 °C (Td5: 215–235 °C) due to degradation of phenolic end groups. This article also gives an insight on how the traces of phenolic impurities can alter the thermal properties of pure benzoxazine monomer as well as its corresponding polymer. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report the characterization of copolymers of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2‐propenoic acid, 2‐methyl‐, 2‐[[[[4‐methyl‐3‐[[(2‐methyl‐4‐nitrophenyl)amino]carbonyl]aminophenyl]carbonyl]oxy]ethyl ester (PAMEE) exhibiting nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. The linear copolymer, poly(MMA‐co‐PAMEE), with a NLO chromophore incorporated into PAMME exhibits a high glass transition temperature of 131°C, as determined by DSC. The thin films of copolymers, which were cast on microscopic glass slides, were optically transparent, and the corona poled polymers produced relatively large and stable second harmonic generation (SHG) signals at room temperature. The nonlinear coefficient d33 of the crosslinked copolymer containing 30 wt % PAMEE was 30.8 pm/V. The SHG signal strength remained unchanged, even after 120 days, and exhibited excellent thermal stability at 65°C. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Generally, protection and deprotection procedures of amino groups are required in preparing propargyl ether‐containing benzoxazines. In this study, we report a facile, deprotection‐free preparation of a propargyl ether‐containing phosphinated benzoxazine (2) from the nucleophilic substitution of a phenolic OH‐containing phosphinated benzoxazine (1) and propargyl bromide in the catalysis of potassium carbonate. The structure of (2) was characterized and confirmed by a high‐resolution mass spectrum, 1H, 13C, 1H‐1H, 1H‐13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra, and X‐ray single crystal diffractogram. infrared (IR) and differential scanning calorimetry were used to monitor the ring‐opening of benzoxazine and crosslinking of propargyl ether. The microstructure and the structure–property relationship of the resulting homopolymers and copolymers are discussed. The Tg of homopolymer of (2) is 208 °C by dynamic mechanical analysis, the coefficient of thermal expansion is 43 ppm/°C, and Td 5% (N2) is 393 °C, respectively, which are higher than those of the homopolymer of (1) . Similar trends were observed in the copolymerization system. The results demonstrate the beneficial effect of crosslinking afforded by the propargyl ether group is higher than that by the phenolic OH group. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of fluorene‐based benzoxazine copolymers were synthesized from the mixture of 9,9‐bis(4‐hydroxyphenyl)fluorene and bisphenol A, and 4,4′‐diaminodiphenyloxide and paraformaldehyde. And the cured polybenzoxazine films derived from these copolymers were also obtained. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonances confirmed the structure of these benzoxazines. Their molecular weight was estimated by gel permeation chromatography. The curing behavior of the precursors was monitored by FTIR and differential scanning calorimetry. Dynamic mechanical analysis and thermogravimetric analysis were performed to study the thermal properties of the cured polymers. The cured polybenzoxazines exhibit excellent heat resistance with glass transition temperatures (Tg) of 286–317°C, good thermal stability along with the values of 5% weight loss temperatures (T5) over 340°C, and high char yield over 50% at 800°C. The mechanical properties of the cured polymers were also measured by bending tests. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A bifunctional benzoxazine monomer, 6,6′‐bis(3‐allyl‐3,4‐dihydro‐2H‐benzo[e][1,3]oxazinyl) sulfone (BS‐ala), was synthesized from bisphenol‐S, allylamine and formaldehyde via a solution method. The chemical structure of BS‐ala was confirmed by 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The polymerization behavior of BS‐ala was investigated by FTIR, solid‐state 13C NMR, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The oxazine ring opening polymerization is prior to the addition polymerization of allyl group, and the exothermic peaks corresponding to the two reactions appear partially overlapped in the DSC curve. The storage modulus of the resultant polybenzoxazine at 25°C is about 3.9 GPa, and the glass transition temperature is 254°C. The 5% and 10% weight loss temperatures of the polybenzoxazine are about 335°C and 361°C in both air and nitrogen, respectively. The char yield is about 58% at 800°C in nitrogen, whereas almost no residue is remained at 700°C in air. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A novel polymer, poly( 1 ) containing benzoxazine and phenyleneethynylene moieties in the main chain with number‐average molecular weights ranging from 1400 to 9800 was obtained quantitatively by the Sonogashira–Hagihara coupling polymerization of the corresponding iodophenyl‐ and ethynylphenyl‐substituted monomer 1 . Poly( 1 ) was heated at 200 °C under N2 for 2 h to obtain the cured polymer, poly( 1 )′ via the ring‐opening polymerization of the benzoxazine moieties. The structures of the polymer before and after curing were confirmed by 1H‐NMR, IR, and UV–vis absorption and reflectance spectroscopies. Poly( 1 )′ was thermally more stable than monomer 1 and poly( 1 ). A specimen was prepared from a mixture of poly( 1 ) and phenol‐diaminodiphenylmethane type benzoxazine 2 by heating at 200 °C for 2 h under N2. The poly( 1 )/ 2 resin was thermally stable than bisphenol‐A type benzoxazine resin 3 . Poly( 1 ) exhibited XRD peaks corresponding to the d‐spacings of 1.26–0.98 and 0.40 nm, assignable to the repeating monomer unit and alignment of polymer molecules, respectively. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ABCBA‐type pentablock copolymers of methyl methacrylate (MMA), styrene (S), and isobutylene (IB) were prepared by a three‐step synthesis, which included atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and cationic polymerization: (1) poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with terminal chlorine atoms was prepared by ATRP initiated with an aromatic difunctional initiator bearing two trichloromethyl groups under CuCl/2,2′‐bipyridine catalysis; (2) PMMA with the same catalyst was used for ATRP of styrene, which produced a poly(S‐b‐MMA‐b‐S) triblock copolymer; and (3) IB was polymerized cationically in the presence of the aforementioned triblock copolymer and BCl3, and this produced a poly(IB‐b‐S‐b‐MMA‐b‐S‐b‐IB) pentablock copolymer. The reaction temperature, varied from ?78 to ?25 °C, significantly affected the IB content in the product; the highest was obtained at ?25 °C. The formation of a pentablock copolymer with a narrow molecular weight distribution provided direct evidence of the presence of active chlorine at the ends of the poly(S‐b‐MMA‐b‐S) triblock copolymer, capable of the initiation of the cationic polymerization of IB in the presence of BCl3. A differential scanning calorimetry trace of the pentablock copolymer (20.1 mol % IB) showed the glass‐transition temperatures of three segregated domains, that is, polyisobutylene (?87.4 °C), polystyrene (95.6 °C), and PMMA (103.7 °C) blocks. One glass‐transition temperature (104.5 °C) was observed for the aforementioned triblock copolymer. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 6098–6108, 2004  相似文献

Aside from their outstanding properties such as thermal and chemical stability and excellent mechanical performance, benzoxazines suffer from high polymerization temperatures. Isomeric mixtures of bifunctional benzoxazines based on resorcinol proved already to be highly reactive monomers enabling polymerizations at lower temperatures. This contribution describes the polymerization behavior of single benzoxazine isomers and furthermore the influence of different substituents at the aniline moiety on the curing temperature. Single isomers of bifunctional benzoxazines are now accessible in a straightforward one‐pot synthesis starting from resorcinol and the appropriate N‐phenyl functionalized aniline component. The asymmetric benzoxazine monomers bearing no (R‐a: Tpeak = 179 °C) or electron‐donating substituents in meta position to N (R‐3,5dma: Tpeak = 183 °C) succeed in lowering the polymerization temperature. Additionally, the impact of several initiating systems was studied resulting in a decrease of the polymerization temperature for all studied resorcinol derived benzoxazine isomers (down to 144 °C). © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ABCBA‐type pentablock copolymers of methyl methacrylate, styrene, and isobutylene (IB) were prepared by the cationic polymerization of IB in the presence of the α,ω‐dichloro‐PS‐b‐PMMA‐b‐PS triblock copolymer [where PS is polystyrene and PMMA is poly(methyl methacrylate)] as a macroinitiator in conjunction with diethylaluminum chloride (Et2AlCl) as a coinitiator. The macroinitiator was prepared by a two‐step copper‐based atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The reaction temperature, ?78 or ?25 °C, significantly affected the IB content in the resulting copolymers; a higher content was obtained at ?78 °C. The formation of the PIB‐b‐PS‐b‐PMMA‐b‐PS‐b‐PIB copolymers (where PIB is polyisobutylene), prepared at ?25 (20.3 mol % IB) or ?78 °C (61.3 mol % IB; rubbery material), with relatively narrow molecular weight distributions provided direct evidence of the presence of labile chlorine atoms at both ends of the macroinitiator capable of initiation of cationic polymerization of IB. One glass‐transition temperature (Tg), 104.5 °C, was observed for the aforementioned triblock copolymer, and the pentablock copolymer containing 61.3 mol % IB showed two well‐defined Tg's: ?73.0 °C for PIB and 95.6 °C for the PS–PMMA blocks. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In the present work, new classes of bio‐based polybenzoxazines were synthesized using eugenol as phenol source and furfurylamine and stearylamine as amine sources separately through solventless green synthetic process routes and were further reinforced with varying percentages (1, 3, 5, and 10 wt%) of silica (from rice husk) to attain hybrid composites. The molecular structure, cure behaviour, thermal stability, dielectric properties, and flame‐retardant behaviour of both benzoxazine monomers and benzoxazine composites were characterized using appropriate modern analytical techniques. The eugenol‐based benzoxazines synthesized using furfurylamine (FBz) and stearylamine (SBz) were cured at 223°C and 233°C, respectively. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) data reveal the glass transition temperatures (Tg) of FBz and SBz were 157°C and 132°C, respectively, and the maximum decomposition temperature (Tmax) as obtained from thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), were found to be 464°C and 398°C for FBz and SBz, respectively. The dielectric constants for FBz and SBz obtained at 1 MHz were 3.28 and 3.62, respectively. Furthermore, varying weight percentages (1, 3, 5, and 10 wt%) of 3‐mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (3‐MPTMS) functionalized bio‐silica reinforced the composite materials as evidenced by their improved thermal stability and lower dielectric constant. Data obtained from thermal and dielectric studies suggested that these polybenzoxazines could be used in the form of adhesives, sealants, and composites for high performance inter‐layer low‐k dielectric applications in microelectronics.  相似文献

A benzoxazine compound with a maleimide group, 3‐phenyl‐3,4‐dihydro‐2H‐6‐(N‐maleimido)‐1,3‐benzoxazine (HPM‐Ba), was prepared from N‐(4‐hydroxyphenyl)maleimide, formaldehyde, and aniline. The chemical structure of HBM‐Ba was identified by FT‐IR, 1H‐NMR, and elemental analysis. HPM‐Ba showed a melting point of 52–55 °C and good solubility in common organic solvents. HPM‐Ba showed a two‐stage process of thermal polymerization. The first stage arose from the polymerization of maleimide groups, and the second one was the ring‐opening reaction of benzoxazine groups. Fusible polymaleimides with a Tg of around 100 °C could be obtained by thermally polymerizing HPM‐Ba at 130 °C. Further polymerizing the polymaleimides at 240 °C resulted in a completely cured resin showing a Tg at 204 °C. Good thermal stability and self‐extinguishing behavior was observed with the cured polybenzoxazine resins. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 5954–5963, 2004  相似文献

A series of random copolymers of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and sodium 2‐acrylamido‐2‐methyl‐1‐propanesulphonate (AMPS) was synthesized by free‐radical copolymerization. The content of AMPS in the copolymers ranged from 1.1 to 9.6 mol %. The lower critical‐solution temperature (LCST) of copolymers in water increased strongly with an increasing content of AMPS. The influence of polymer concentration on the LCST of the copolymers was studied. For the copolymers with a higher AMPS content, the LCST decreased faster with an increasing concentration than for copolymers with a low content of AMPS. For a copolymer containing 1.1 mol % of AMPS the LCST dropped by about 3 °C when the concentration increased from 1 to 10 g/L, whereas for a copolymer containing 9.6 mol % of AMPS the LCST dropped by about 10 °C in the concentration range from 2 to 10 g/L. It was observed that the ionic strength of the aqueous polymer solution very strongly influences the LCST. This effect was most visible for the copolymer with the highest content of AMPS (9.6 mol %) for which an increase in the ionic strength from 0.2 to 2.0 resulted in a decrease in the LCST by about 27 °C (from 55 to 28 °C), whereas for the copolymer containing 1.1 mol % of AMPS the LCST decreased only by about 6 °C (from 37 to 31 °C) when the ionic strength increased from 0.005 to 0.3. The reactivity ratios for the AMPS and NIPAM monomer pairs were determined using different methods. The values of rAMPS and rNIPAM obtained were 11.0–11.6 and 2.1–2.4, respectively. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 39: 2784–2792, 2001  相似文献

A film of nascent powder of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), compacted below the ambient melting temperature (Tm, 335 °C), was drawn by two‐stage draw techniques consisting of a first‐stage solid‐state coextrusion followed by a second‐stage solid‐state coextrusion or tensile draw. Although the ductility of extrudates was lost for the second‐stage tensile draw at temperatures above 150 °C due to the rapid decrease in strength, as previously reported, the ductility of extrudates increased with temperature even above 150 °C when the second‐stage draw was made by solid‐state coextrusion, reflecting the different deformation flow fields in a free space for the former and in an extrusion die for the latter. Thus, a powder film initially coextruded to a low extrusion draw ratio (EDR) of 6–20 at 325 °C was further drawn by coextrusion to EDRs up to ~?400 at 325–340 °C, near the Tm. Extremely high chain orientation (fc = 0.998 ± 0.001), crystallinity (96.5 ± 0.5)%, and tensile modulus (115 ± 5 GPa at 24 °C, corresponding to 73% of the X‐ray crystal modulus) were achieved at high EDRs. Despite such a morphological perfection and a high modulus, the tensile strength of a superdrawn tape, 0.48 ± 0.03 GPa, was significantly low when compared with those (1.4–2.3 GPa) previously reported by tensile drawing above the Tm. Such a low strength of a superdrawn, high‐modulus PTFE tape was ascribed to the low intermolecular interaction of PTFE and the lack of intercrystalline links along the fiber axis, reflecting the initial chain‐extended morphology of the nascent powder combined with the fairly high chain mobility associated with the crystal/crystal transitions at around room temperature. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 1,3‐benzoxazine 1 , bearing 4‐pyridyl moiety on the nitrogen atom, was synthesized from p‐cresol, 4‐aminopyridine, and paraformaldehyde. The efficient synthesis was achieved by adding acetic acid to suppress the strong basicity caused by the presence of 4‐aminopyridine derivatives. Upon heating 1 at 180 °C, it underwent the thermally induced ring‐opening polymerization. The resulting polymer was composed of two types of repeating unit, i.e., (1) Mannich‐type one (‐phenol‐CH2‐NR‐CH2‐) that can be expected from the general ring‐opening polymerization of conventional benzoxazines and (2) a typical phenolic resin‐type one (‐phenol‐CH2‐phenol‐) induced by release of 4‐aminopyridine and paraformaldehyde (unit B). Another structural feature of the polymer was that it possessed a benzoxazine moiety at the chain end. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2014 , 52, 410–416  相似文献

Stimuli‐responsive ABC triblock copolymers with three segments with different phase‐separation temperatures were synthesized via sequential living cationic copolymerization. The triblock copolymers exhibited sensitive thermally induced physical gelation (open association) through the formation of micelles. For example, an aqueous solution of EOVE200b‐MOVE200b‐EOEOVE200 [where EOVE is 2‐ethoxyethyl vinyl ether, MOVE is 2‐methoxethyl vinyl ether and EOEOVE is 2‐(2‐ethoxy)ethoxyethyl vinyl ether; the order of the phase‐separation temperatures was poly(EOVE) (20 °C) < poly(EOEOVE) (41 °C) < poly(MOVE) (70 °C)] underwent multiple reversible transitions from sol (<20 °C) to micellization (20–41 °C) to physical gelation (physical crosslinking, 41–64 °C) and, finally, to precipitation (>64 °C). At 41–64 °C, the physical gel became stiffer than similar diblock or ABA triblock copolymers of the same molecular weight. Furthermore, the ABC triblock copolymers exhibited Weissenberg effects in semidilute aqueous solutions. In sharp contrast, another ABC triblock copolymer with a different arrangement, EOVE200b‐EOEOVE200b‐MOVE200, scarcely exhibited any increase in viscosity above 41 °C. The temperatures of micelle formation and physical gelation corresponded to the phase‐separation temperatures of the segment types in the ABC triblock copolymer. No second‐stage association was observed for AB and ABA block copolymers with the same thermosensitive segments found in their ABC counterparts. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A benzoxazine ( P‐bapf ) based on 9,9‐bis(4‐aminophenyl)fluorene (BAPF), phenol, and formaldehyde was successfully prepared using two‐pot and one‐pot procedures. In the two‐pot approach, BAPF initially reacted with 2‐hydroxybenzaldehyde, leading to 9,9‐bis(4‐(2‐hydroxybenzylideneimino)phenyl)fluorene. The imine linkages of 9,9‐bis(4‐(2‐hydroxybenzylideneimino)phenyl)fluorene were then reduced by sodium borohydride, forming 9,9‐bis(4‐(2‐hydroxybenzylamino)phenyl)fluorene. Finally, paraformaldehyde was added to induce ring closure condensation, forming benzoxazine ( P‐bapf ). In the one‐pot approach, P‐bapf was obtained directly by reacting BAPF, phenol, and paraformaldehyde in various solvents. Among the solvents, we found that using toluene/ethanol (2/1, v/v) as a solvent leads to the best purity and yield. No gelation was observed in the preparation. The structure of the resulting benzoxazine was confirmed by 1H, 13C, 1H? 1H and 1H? 13C NMR spectra. P‐bapf exhibits a photoluminescent emission at 395 nm under an excitation of 275 nm. After curing, the resulting P‐bapf thermoset exhibits Tg as high as 236 °C, and the Tg can be further increased to 260 °C by copolymerization with an equal equivalent of cresol novolac epoxy. The 5% degradation temperature of the P‐bapf thermoset reaches as high as 413 °C (N2) and 431 °C (air). The refractive index at 589 nm is as high as 1.70, demonstrating a high refractive index characteristic of fluorene linkage. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
