It has been demonstrated that He+ ion irradiation is an excellent tool for modifying magnetic properties, like the magnetic anisotropy, the interlayer exchange coupling strength and the exchange bias field of ultra-thin magnetic layered systems. This paper summarizes the effects of ion irradiation on exchange bias systems. As a first example, for possible applications of the ion induced magnetic effects, the realization of an angle sensing device is described. We have laser-cooled all even isotopes of Zn+ ions confined in a linear radio-frequency ion trap, and measuredoptical isotope shifts in the 4s 2 S 1/2-4p 2 P 3/2 transition. Tunable continuous-wave coherent light near 202 nm was generated for this experiment by means of frequency conversion of light from diode and solid-state lasers. The measured isotope shifts are as follows: 66Zn+-64Zn+, 0.676(6) GHz; 68Zn+-66Zn+, 0.670(4) GHz; and 70Zn+-68Zn+, 0.568(10) GHz. In all cases, the transition line of the heavier isotope was observed at the higher frequency. The mass and the field shifts were estimated using a King plot. This is the first isotope-shift measurement in the transition involving the ground (4s 2 S 1/2) state of Zn+ ions. Quasi-phase-matched (QPM) materials allow the generation of spectroscopically useful infrared radiation in an efficient and broadly tunable format. Here, we describe several applications of QPM-based light sources to remote and local chemical sensing. The remote systems are gas imagers that employ a fiber-pumped continuous-wave optical parametric oscillator or a microlaser-pumped, diode-seeded optical parametric amplifier as the illumination source. Technology described for local sensing includes a cavity ring down spectrometer that employs a novel optical parametric generator–amplifier to achieve ≥350 cm-1 of contiguous tuning and a long-wave infrared light source based on QPM GaAs. In each case the use of QPM materials in conjunction with effective pump sources instills simplicity and ruggedness into the sensing systems.  The B N hyperbolic Sutherland spin model is expressed in terms of a suitable set of commuting Dunkl operators. This fact is exploited to derive a complete family of commuting integrals of motion of the model, thus establishing its integrability. The Dunkl operators are shown to possess a common flag of invariant finite-dimensional linear spaces of smooth scalar functions. This implies that the Hamiltonian of the model preserves a corresponding flag of smooth spin functions. The discrete spectrum of the restriction of the Hamiltonian to this spin flag is explicitly computed by triangularization. The integrability of the hyperbolic Sutherland spin chain of B N type associated with the dynamical model is proved using Polychronakos's ``freezing trick'. The use of mid-infrared polarization spectroscopy (PS) for the detection of CO2 has been demonstrated. The P(13) and P(14) resonances of the (0 00 0)→(1 00 1) transition of CO2 were probed using a single-mode optical parametric generator system to produce a high-intensity laser beam at approximately 2.7 μm. The experiments were performed in an atmospheric pressure CO2 jet and also in a sub-atmospheric pressure gas cell. The experimental results were compared with the results of the time-dependent density-matrix equations using direct numerical integration. The Zeeman-state structure of the upper and lower energy levels was included in the multi-state formulation of the density-matrix equations. Fifty-eight Zeeman states and two bath levels were included in the numerical analysis of the P(14) transition. The measured and calculated PS line shapes were in good agreement, and the absolute experimental signal level agreed with the theoretical calculation to within a factor of five. We examine in detail the theory of the intrinsic non-linearities in the dynamics of trapped ions due to the Coulomb interaction. In particular, the possibility of mode–mode coupling, which can be a source of decoherence in trapped ion quantum computation, or can be exploited for parametric down-conversion of phonons, is discussed and conditions under which such coupling is possible are derived. We have demonstrated the non-thermal removal of oxygen atoms from an oxidized silicon surface (SiO2) on a silicon wafer by the use of a low-power (0.3 mW cm-2) incoherent vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light source at 126 nm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) has shown that a maximum Si concentration of 80% appears at the surface after a 20-h irradiation with 9.8 eV photons, as a result of oxygen removal from the SiO2 matrix. The surface morphology, however, indicates no damage or melting on the surface even after the irradiation. Absolute number densities of the CH radical were determined in a partially premixed methane/air flame (equivalence ratio was 1.36) at atmospheric pressure by exciting a predissociating level via the CH B–X(1,0) transition using a quasi-linear laser-induced fluorescence scheme. The peak number density was (1.0±0.4)×1013 cm-3 or 2.4±1 ppm at 1900 K, with a flame-front width of 250 μm (FWHM). Rotational energy transfer must be considered for correct laser-induced fluorescence signal interpretation. Competition between optical pumping and rotational relaxation in both excited and ground states produces a signal that varies almost linearly with laser pulse energy even for large pumping rates. For these conditions, the population of the initial ground-state rotational level is depleted by optical pumping, and rotational energy transfer collisions rapidly repopulate the level during the laser pulse. Deviations from linear behavior are less than 20%. The effects of spatial resolution and polarization of the fluorescence on the absolute measurements are also discussed. Ultrahigh-efficiency TEM00 operation is demonstrated in a diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser in a bounce amplifier geometry using a specially designed astigmatically optimised cavity configuration. Optical efficiency >68% is demonstrated and up to 27.1 W of output power for multimode operation. For single-mode TEM00 operation, an output power of 23.1 W for 39.5 W of diode pumping was produced with beam propagation parameters of Mx 2=1.3 and My 2=1.1. The elemental composition and the surface morphology of thin films grown by laser ablation of barium titanate with femtosecond pulses at 620 nm laser wavelength have been systematically studied according to the experimental pulsed-laser deposition parameters : laser energy density, oxygen pressure, substrate temperature, target–substrate distance and substrate position (in- and off-axis geometry). Firstly, even at high temperature (700 °C), the deposits consist of coalesced particles up to 1-μm in size, mixed in a poorly crystallised tetragonal BaTiO3 thin film. The particles formed in femtosecond pulsed-laser deposition induce a high surface roughness, which is observed whatever the experimental growth conditions and does not correspond to the droplets often observed during laser ablation in the nanosecond regime. As shown by plasma expansion dynamics, these particles propagate toward the substrate in the plasma plume with a low velocity, and are assumed to be produced by gas-phase reactions. Moreover, the cationic concentration evaluated through the Ba/Ti ratio strongly depends on the oxygen pressure in the ablation chamber and the angular position of the substrate along the normal to the target at laser impact. Indeed, the films appear to be enriched in the heavy element (Ba) when the substrate is located at high angular deviation. This fact is correlated to an increase in the lighter species (i.e. Ti) in the central part of the plasma plume. An extremely thin cell (ETC) with the thickness of a Rb atomic vapor layer in the range of 100–300 nm was fabricated. It is demonstrated that a simple laser-diode technique with a single resonant light beam is sufficient to observe separately all of the atomic hyperfine transitions of the D 2 line of Rb (780 nm) and also allows us to measure the relative transition probabilities of the hyperfine transitions. The onset of collisional self-broadening of the hyperfine transitions as the number density of atoms increases was studied. The detrimental role of the atoms with slow longitudinal velocity in the sub-Doppler response of the Rb ETC is demonstrated by studies in which the cell is tilted from normal incidence of the laser beam. It is also shown that using an ETC allows us to resolve in a moderate external magnetic field the Zeeman splitting of the hyperfine transitions of the 87Rb D 1 transition F g=1F e=1,2. The analysis of compact CW diode-side-pumped grazing-incidence-geometry Nd:YVO4 laser designs is presented. An output power of 5 W (λ=1064 nm) was produced at 17 W of diode pump (conversion efficiency of 30%) in single transverse TEM00 mode operation at high laser beam quality (Mx 2≈1.05 and My 2≈1.01). The resonator geometry was analyzed by applying generalized 4×4 matrix modeling of the spatial mode size, including the impact on the laser operation of cavity astigmatism and a thermal lens in the laser slab. Terahertz stimulated emission of phosphorus donors in silicon optically excited by radiation from the free-electron laser FELIX has been studied. It is found that a spectral line of the Si:P laser emission depends on pump frequency. Stimulated emission arises on the 2p0→1s(E) intra-centre transition (21.2 meV) under resonant pumping of the 2p0 state and on the 2p0→1s(T2) transition (22.3 meV) under pumping of the 2p± or higher odd-parity donor states. The line shift is attributed to the Auger redistribution of the 1s(E)- and 1s(T2)-state populations. Ferroelectric Bi3.25La0.75Ti3O12 (BLT) thin films have been grown on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates by chemical solution methods. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that BLT thin films are polycrystalline with (171)-preferential orientation. Atomic force microscopy investigation shows that they have large grains about 120 nm in size. A Pt/BLT/Pt capacitor has been fabricated and showed excellent ferroelectricity, with a remnant polarization and coercive field of 24 μC/cm2 and 116 kV/cm, respectively. The capacitor shows no polarization fatigue up to 109 switching cycles. The optical constants (n,k) of the BLT thin films in the wavelength range 0.35–1.7 μm were obtained by spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements, and the band-gap energy was found to be about 3.25 eV. High-spin states in the 97Tc nucleus have been studied by in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy with the reaction 82Se(19F,4nγ) at 68 MeV incident energy. Excited states have been observed up to about 8 MeV excitation and spin 43/2. The observed level scheme is compared with results of shell model calculations. We have investigated the two major effects that limit the accuracy of an optical frequency standard based on laser-cooled neutral calcium atoms, i.e. the residual Doppler shift and atomic collisions. A new correction method was applied to reduce the contribution of the residual Doppler effect to the total fractional uncertainty to 1×10-14. Measurements of the shift of the clock transition frequency due to cold collisions allowed us to reduce their contribution to 4×10-15. With these improvements we have reduced the total fractional frequency uncertainty of the standard by nearly an order of magnitude to 2×10-14. Sub-nanosecond microchip laser with intracavity Raman conversion   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Efficient sub-nanosecond pulse operation of microchip lasers with intracavity Raman conversion and pulse compression is presented for the first time. The microchip lasers were composed of Nd:LSB or Nd:YAG laser crystals, Cr4+:YAG saturable absorber, and Ba(NO3)2 Raman medium. The pulse duration obtained at the Stokes wavelength (1196 nm) was as short as 118 ps. Optical conversion efficiency of laser-diode pump power to the Stokes power of 8% was reached. Pulse energy and peak power of Stokes emission were 1.2 μJ and 5.4 kW, correspondingly. Numerical calculations are in good agreement with obtained experimental results. The He-Ar-Cu+ IR laser operates in a hollow-cathode discharge, typically in a mixture of helium with a few-% Ar. The population inversion of the Cu+ ion levels, responsible for laser action, is attributed to asymmetric charge transfer between He+ ions and sputtered Cu atoms. The Ar gas is added to promote sputtering of the Cu cathode. In this paper, a hybrid modeling network consisting of several different models for the various plasma species present in a He-Ar-Cu hollow-cathode discharge is applied to investigate the effect of Ar concentration in the gas mixture on the discharge behavior, and to find the optimum He/Ar gas ratio for laser operation. It is found that the densities of electrons, Ar+ ions, Arm * metastable atoms, sputtered Cu atoms and Cu+ ions increase upon the addition of more Ar gas, whereas the densities of He+ ions, He2 + ions and Hem * metastable atoms drop considerably. The product of the calculated Cu atom and He+ ion densities, which determines the production rate of the upper laser levels, and hence probably also the laser output power, is found to reach a maximum around 1–5 % Ar addition. This calculation result is compared to experimental measurements, and reasonable agreement has been reached. Mainly [115]-oriented SrBi2Ta2O9 (SBT) films were prepared on GaAs(100) substrates with TiO2 buffer layers. Both the SBT films and the TiO2 buffer layers were deposited by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) using a KrF excimer laser. The depth profile of the constituent elements observed by Auger electron spectrometry (AES) shows no remarkable diffusion at both the interfaces between SBT and TiO2 and between TiO2 and the GaAs substrate. The electrical characteristics of the Pt/SBT/TiO2/GaAs(100) structures show a ferroelectric hysteresis loop with a small remanent polarization (∼0.5 μC/cm2). We extract the neutron charge form factor G n E(Q 2) from the charge form factor of deuteron G d C(Q 2) obtained from T 20(Q 2) data at 0≤Q 2≤ 1.717 (GeV/c)2. The extraction is based on the relativistic impulse approximation in the instant form of the relativistic Hamiltonian dynamics. Our results (12 new points) are compatible with existing values of the neutron charge form factor of other authors. We propose a fit for the whole set (36 points) taking into account the data for the slope of the form factor at Q 2 = 0.
