Based on the electric double layer (EDL) theory and the momentum equation governing the electroosmosis flow, this paper presents an analytical solution to the periodical electroosmosis with a parallel straight capillary bundle model of reservoir rocks to reveal the microscopic mechanism of the electroosmotic flows in rocks. The theory shows that both the frequency dispersion characteristics of the macroscopic electroosmotic Darcy velocity in unsealed rocks and the electroosmotic pressure coefficient in sealed rocks depend on the porosity and electrochemical properties of reservoir rocks. The mathematical simulation indicates that the distribution of the periodical electroosmotic velocity is wavelike in the rock pore. The greater the porosity is, the greater electroosmotic the Darcy velocity and the smaller electroosmotic pressure coefficient are generated. The module values of the electroosmotic Darcy velocity and the electroosmotic pressure coefficient increase with the decreasing solution concentration or the increasing cation exchange capacity without affecting the phase of the electroosmotic Darcy velocity.  相似文献

This paper reports experimental results that demonstrate petrophysical and capillary characteristics of compacted salt. The measured data include porosity, gas permeability, pore size distribution, specific surface area, and gas-brine breakthrough and capillary pressure. Salt samples employed in the experiments were prepared by compacting sodium chloride granulates at high stresses for several hours. They represent an intermediate consolidation stage of crushed salt under in-situ conditions. The porosity and permeability of compacted salt showed similar trends to those expected in backfilled regions of waste repositories excavated in salt rock. The correlation between the measured porosity and permeability seems to be independent of the compaction parameters for the range examined in this study. The correlation also shows a different behaviour from that of rock salt. The data of all petrophysical properties show that the pore structure of compacted salt can be better characterized by fracture permeability models rather than capillary bundle ones. Simple creep tests, conducted on the fully-brine-saturated compacted salt samples, yielded similar strain rates to those obtained by a steady-state mechanical model developed from the tests on fully brine-saturated granular salt. A modified procedure is proposed for the evaluation of restored-state capillary pressure data influenced by the material creep. The characteristic parameters for the capillary behaviour of compacted salt are determined by matching the Brooks-Corey and van Genuchten models with the measured data. The Leverett functions determined with different methods agree well.  相似文献

Due to the intricate structure of carbonate rocks, relationships between porosity or saturation and petrophysical transport properties classically used for reservoir estimation and recovery strategies are either very complex or nonexistent. Thus, further understanding of the influence of the rock structure on the petrophysical transport properties becomes relevant. We therefore present a Dual Pore Network approach (D-PNM) applied to???-CT images of bimodal porous media. The major advantage of this method lies in the fact that it takes into account the real architecture of the connected macropore network as well as the microporosity unresolved by???-CT imaging. Whereas governing equations are solved in each individual macropore, transport behavior of microporosity is simulated by average quantities. Thus, D-PNM is particularly suited for the investigation of carbonate rocks, characterized by broad pore size distributions. We describe the principles of the image acquisition and network extraction procedure and the governing equations of D-PNM. The model is tested on three carbonate samples, two outcrop, and one reservoir carbonate. Calculated petrophysical transport properties are compared to experimental data and we show that D-PNM correctly reproduces conventional as well as unconventional electrical transport behavior. A major restriction of D-PNM is the requirement of a connected macropore network, that is, especially in the case of carbonates, not always available. Solutions to that are presented.  相似文献

We present a dynamic model of immiscible two-phase flow in a network representation of a porous medium. The model is based on the governing equations describing two-phase flow in porous media, and can handle both drainage, imbibition, and steady-state displacement. Dynamic wetting layers in corners of the pore space are incorporated, with focus on modeling resistivity measurements on saturated rocks at different capillary numbers. The flow simulations are performed on a realistic network of a sandpack which is perfectly water-wet. Our numerical results show saturation profiles for imbibition in agreement with experiments. For free spontaneous imbibition we find that the imbibition rate follows the Washburn relation, i.e., the water saturation increases proportionally to the square root of time. We also reproduce rate effects in the resistivity index for drainage and imbibition.  相似文献

Three-phase flow is a key process occurring in subsurface reservoirs, for example, during $\text{ CO }_2$ sequestration and enhanced oil recovery techniques such as water alternating gas (WAG) injection. Predicting three-phase flow processes, for example, the increase in oil recovery during WAG, requires a sound understanding of the fundamental flow physics in water- to oil-wet rocks to derive physically robust flow functions, i.e. relative permeability and capillary pressure. In this study, we use pore-network modelling, a reliable and physically based simulation tool, to predict the flow functions. We have developed a new pore-scale network model for rocks with variable wettability, from water- to oil-wet. It comprises a constrained set of parameters that mimic the wetting state of a reservoir. Unlike other models, it combines three main features: (1) A novel thermodynamic criterion for formation and collapse of oil layers. The new model hence captures wetting film and layer flow of oil adequately, which affects the oil relative permeability at low oil saturation and leads to accurate prediction of residual oil. (2) Multiple displacement chains, where injection of one phase at the inlet triggers a chain of interface displacements throughout the network. This allows for the accurate modelling of the mobilisation of many disconnected phase clusters that arise, in particular, during higher order WAG floods. (3) The model takes realistic 3D pore-networks extracted from pore-space reconstruction methods and CT images as input, preserving both topology and pore shape of the sample. For water-wet systems, we have validated our model with available experimental data from core floods. For oil-wet systems, we validated our network model by comparing 2D network simulations with published data from WAG floods in oil-wet micromodels. This demonstrates the importance of film and layer flow for the continuity of the various phases during subsequent WAG cycles and for the residual oil saturations. A sensitivity analysis has been carried out with the full 3D model to predict three-phase relative permeabilities and residual oil saturations for WAG cycles under various wetting conditions with different flood end-points.  相似文献

Pore networks can be extracted from 3D rock images to accurately predict multi-phase flow properties of rocks by network flow simulation. However, the predicted flow properties may be sensitive to the extracted pore network if it is small, even though its underlying characteristics are representative. Therefore, it is a challenge to investigate the effects on flow properties of microscopic rock features individually and collectively based on small samples. In this article, a new approach is introduced to generate from an initial network a stochastic network of arbitrary size that has the same flow properties as the parent network. Firstly, we characterise the realistic parent network in terms of distributions of the geometrical pore properties and correlations between these properties, as well as the connectivity function describing the detailed network topology. Secondly, to create a stochastic network of arbitrary size, we generate the required number of nodes and bonds with the correlated properties of the original network. The nodes are randomly located in the given network domain and connected by bonds according to the strongest correlation between node and bond properties, while honouring the connectivity function. Thirdly, using a state-of-the-art two-phase flow network model, we demonstrate for two samples that the rock flow properties (capillary pressure, absolute and relative permeability) are preserved in the stochastic networks, in particular, if the latter are larger than the original, or the method reveals that the size of the original sample is not representative. We also show the information that is necessary to reproduce the realistic networks correctly, in particular the connectivity function. This approach forms the basis for the stochastic generation of networks from multiple rock images at different resolutions by combining the relevant statistics from the corresponding networks, which will be presented in a future publication.  相似文献

Pore network analysis is used to investigate the effects of microscopic parameters of the pore structure such as pore geometry, pore-size distribution, pore space topology and fractal roughness porosity on resistivity index curves of strongly water-wet porous media. The pore structure is represented by a three-dimensional network of lamellar capillary tubes with fractal roughness features along their pore-walls. Oil-water drainage (conventional porous plate method) is simulated with a bond percolation-and-fractal roughness model without trapping of wetting fluid. The resistivity index, saturation exponent and capillary pressure are expressed as approximate functions of the pore network parameters by adopting some simplifying assumptions and using effective medium approximation, universal scaling laws of percolation theory and fractal geometry. Some new phenomenological models of resistivity index curves of porous media are derived. Finally, the eventual changes of resistivity index caused by the permanent entrapment of wetting fluid in the pore network are also studied.Resistivity index and saturation exponent are decreasing functions of the degree of correlation between pore volume and pore size as well as the width of the pore size distribution, whereas they are independent on the mean pore size. At low water saturations, the saturation exponent decreases or increases for pore systems of low or high fractal roughness porosity respectively, and obtains finite values only when the wetting fluid is not trapped in the pore network. The dependence of saturation exponent on water saturation weakens for strong correlation between pore volume and pore size, high network connectivity, medium pore-wall roughness porosity and medium width of the pore size distribution. The resistivity index can be described succesfully by generalized 3-parameter power functions of water saturation where the parameter values are related closely with the geometrical, topological and fractal properties of the pore structure.  相似文献

Many resistivity data from laboratory measurements and well logging are available. Papers on the relationship between resistivity and relative permeability have been few. To this end, a new method was developed to infer two-phase relative permeability from the resistivity data in a consolidated porous medium. It was found that the wetting phase relative permeability is inversely proportional to the resistivity index of a porous medium. The proposed model was verified using the experimental data in different rocks (Berea, Boise sandstone, and limestone) at different temperatures up to 300°F. The results demonstrated that the oil and water relative permeabilities calculated from the experimental resistivity data by using the model proposed in this article were close to those calculated from the capillary pressure data in the rock samples with different porosities and permeabilities. The results demonstrated that the proposed approach to calculating two-phase relative permeability from resistivity data works satisfactorily in the cases studied.  相似文献

Electrical resistivity soundings are used by geophysicists to determine the structure and composition of the Earth’s crust and mantle and to explore natural resources (ore, oil, gas, water). Their interpretations in terms of composition and in-situ physical conditions depend mainly on laboratory measurements of electrical conductivity of rocks at simulated crustal conditions of temperature, pressure, saturation and pore pressures. These measurements present a numbers of limitations, in particular, in the case where conductive pore fluids are present, as in the case of deep reservoir conditions, where temperature exceeds 250 °C. Here, we present a new cell capable of measuring electrical conductivity of large saturated samples at confining pressure up to 200 MPa, pore pressure up to 50 MPa, and temperature up to 500 °C. The measurement cell has been developed in a commercial, internally heated, gas pressure apparatus (Paterson press). It is based on the concept of “guard ring” electrode, which is adapted to samples that are jacketed by a very conductive, metallic material. Numerical modeling of the current flow in the electrical cell allowed defining the optimal cell geometry. Calibration tests have been performed on Fontainebleau sandstones saturated with electrolytes of different conductivities, up to 350 °C. The resulting electrical formation factor and temperature dependence of electrical conductivity are in very good agreement with previous studies. This new cell will improve the exploration and exploitation of deep fluid reservoirs, as in unconventional, high enthalpy geothermal fields. In particular, the investigations address possible effects of fluid-rock interactions on electrical resistivity of a reservoir host rock.  相似文献

We present a new apparatus capable of maintaining in-situ conditions pertinent to deep geothermal reservoirs over periods of months while in the same time allowing a variety of continuous petrophysical investigations. Two identical devices have been set up at the GFZ-Potsdam. Lithostatic overburden- and hydrostatic pore pressures of up to 100 and 50 MPa, respectively can be simulated. In addition in-situ temperature requirements of up to 200°C can be met. The use of corrosion resistant parts throughout the pore pressure system allows investigations with highly saline formation fluids. Rock permeability, electrical conductivity as well as compressional- and shear-wave velocities can be measured simultaneously and the pore fluid can be sampled under pressure for further chemical analysis. Scientifically, the usage of the device focuses on risk potentials in exploration and exploitation of deep geothermal reservoirs. Particularly, the investigations address possible effects of fluid-rock interactions on the transport properties of a reservoir host rock.  相似文献

We show how to predict flow properties for a variety of rocks using pore-scale modeling with geologically realistic networks. The pore space is represented by a topologically disordered lattice of pores connected by throats that have angular cross-sections. We successfully predict single-phase non-Newtonian rheology, and two and three-phase relative permeability for water-wet media. The pore size distribution of the network can be tuned to match capillary pressure data when a network representation of the system of interest is unavailable. The aim of this work is not simply to match experiments, but to use easily acquired data to estimate difficult to measure properties and to predict trends in data for different rock types or displacement sequences.  相似文献

We invoke pore-scale models to evaluate grain shape effects on petrophysical properties of three-dimensional (3D) images from micro-CT scans and consolidated grain packs. Four sets of grain-packs are constructed on the basis of a new sedimentary algorithm with the following shapes: exact angular grain shapes identified from micro-CT scans, ellipsoids fitted to angular grains, and spheres with volume and surface-to-volume ratio equal to original angular grains on a grain-by-grain basis. Subsequently, a geometry-based cementation algorithm implements pore space alteration due to diagenesis. Eight micro-CT scans and 144 grain-pack images with $500 \times 500 \times 500$ voxels (the resolution units of 3D images) are analyzed in this study. Absolute permeability, formation factor, and capillary pressure are calculated for each 3D image using numerical methods and compared to available core measurements. Angular grain packs give rise to the best agreement with experimental measurements. Cement volume and its spatial distribution in the pore space significantly affect all calculated petrophysical properties. Available empirical permeability correlations for non-spherical grains underestimate permeability between 30 and 70 % for the analyzed samples. Kozeny–Carman’s predictions agree with modeled permeability for spherical grain packs but overestimate permeability for micro-CT images and non-spherical grain packs when volume-based radii are used to calculate the average grain size in a pack. We identify surface-to-volume ratio and grain shape as fundamental physical parameters that control fluid distribution and flow in porous media for equivalent porosity samples.  相似文献

Equations for calculating the limiting equilibrium shapes of the residual oil pillars in homogeneous and stratified inhomogeneous reservoirs of varying wettability are written within the framework of a two-phase displacement model with allowance for capillary pressure. Comparative calculations for an individual well in a circular reservoir show that, in general, the effect of capillary pressure on the shape and volume of the pillars is not negligibly small and may reach 10% of the pore volume.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 1, pp. 114–123, January–February, 1991.  相似文献

The heterogeneous pore space of porous media strongly affects the storage and migration of oil and gas in the reservoir. In this paper, the cross-correlation-based simulation (CCSIM) is combined with the three-step sample method to reconstruct stochastically 3D models of the heterogeneous porous media. Moreover, the two-point and multiple-point connectivity probability functions are used as vertical constraint conditions to select the boundary points of pore and matrix, respectively. The heterogeneities of pore spaces of four rock samples are investigated, and then our methods are tested on the four samples. Quantitative comparison is made by computing various statistical and petrophysical properties for the original samples, as well as the reconstructed model. It was found that the results from CCSIM-TSS are obviously better than that from CCSIM. Finally, the analysis of the distance (ANODI) was used to measure of the variability between the realizations of the four rock samples. The results demonstrated that the results from CCSIM-TSSmp are better than that from CCSIM-TSStp as the complexity of connectivity and heterogeneities of pore spaces increase.  相似文献

We use the model described in Zolfaghari and Piri (Transp Porous Media, 2016) to predict two- and three-phase relative permeabilities and residual saturations for different saturation histories. The results are rigorously validated against their experimentally measured counterparts available in the literature. We show the relevance of thermodynamically consistent threshold capillary pressures and presence of oil cusps for significantly improving the predictive capabilities of the model at low oil saturations. We study systems with wetting and spreading oil layers and cusps. Three independent experimental data sets representing different rock samples and fluid systems are investigated in this work. Different disordered networks are used to represent the pore spaces in which different sets of experiments were performed, i.e., Berea, Bentheimer, and reservoir sandstones. All three-phase equilibrium interfacial tensions used for the simulation of three-phase experimental data are measured and used in the model’s validation. We use a fixed set of parameters, i.e., the input network (to represent the pore space) and contact angles (to represent the wettability state), for all experiments belonging to a data set. Incorporation of the MSP method for capillary pressure calculations and cusp analysis significantly improves the agreement between the model’s predictions of relative permeabilities and residual oil saturations with experimental data.  相似文献

A full waveform recording in a borehole during acoustic logging makes it possible to determine the elastic parameters of a medium under in-situ conditions. The velocity of elastic wave propagation in rocks and elastic moduli are influenced by factors connected with its macrostructure and microstructure, as well as with rock overburden and porous pressure and temperature. The results of the calculations of the relationships between the elastic and reservoir parameters of sedimentary rocks are presented in this paper. The theoretical Kuster and Toksöz model has been applied. The influence of the porosity, the pore space coefficient, and the saturation of different media of porous rocks on elastic moduli and on compressional and shear wave propagation have been considered in this model. The complex composition of the skeleton and the influence of clay material in the porous rock are taken into account.  相似文献

In the course of stimulation and fluid production, the chemical fluid–rock equilibrium of a geothermal reservoir may become disturbed by either temperature changes and/or an alteration of the fluid chemistry. Consequently, dissolution and precipitation reactions might be induced that result in permeability damage. In connection with the field investigations at a deep geothermal doublet, complementary laboratory-based research is performed to address these effects. The reservoir is located at a depth of 4100 to 4200 m near Groß Schönebeck within the Northeast German Basin, 50 km north of Berlin, Germany. Within the reservoir horizon, an effective pressure of approximately 45 MPa and a temperature of 150°C are encountered. Furthermore, the Lower Permian (Rotliegend) reservoir rock is saturated with a highly saline Ca–Na–Cl type formation fluid (TDS ≈ 255 g/l). Under these conditions we performed two sets of long-term flow-through experiments. The pore fluid used during the first and the second experiment was a 0.1 molar NaCl-solution and a synthetic Ca–Na–Cl type fluid with the specifications as above, respectively. The maximum run duration was 186 days. In detail, we experimentally addressed: (1) the effect of long-term flow on rock permeability in connection with possible changes in fluid chemistry and saturation; (2) the occurrence and consequences of baryte precipitation; and (3) potential precipitations related to oxygen-rich well water invasion during water-frac stimulation. In all substudies petrophysical experiments related to the evolution of rock permeability and electrical conductivity were complemented with microstructural investigations and a chemical fluid analysis. We also report the technical challenges encountered when corrosive fluids are used in long-term in situ petrophysical experiments. After it was assured that experimental artifacts can be excluded, it is demonstrated that the sample permeability remained approximately constant within margins of  ±50 % for nearly six months. Furthermore, an effect of baryte precipitation on the rock permeability was not observed. Finally, the fluid exchange procedure did not alter the rock transport properties. The results of the chemical fluid analysis are in support of these observations. In both experiments the electrical conductivity of the samples remained unchanged for a given fluid composition and constant p-T conditions. This emphasizes its valuable complementary character in determining changes in rock transport properties during long-term flow-through experiments when the risk of experimental artifacts is high.  相似文献

The pore and pore-throat sizes of shale and tight rock formations are on the order of tens of nanometers. The fluid flow in such small pores is significantly affected by walls of pores and pore-throats. This boundary layer effect on fluid flow in tight rocks has been investigated through laboratory work on capillary tubes. It is observed that low permeability is associated with large boundary layer effect on fluid flow. The experimental results from a single capillary tube are extended to a bundle of tubes and finally to porous media of tight formations. A physics-based, non-Darcy low-velocity flow equation is derived to account for the boundary layer effect of tight reservoirs by adding a non-Darcy coefficient term. This non-Darcy equation describes the fluid flow more accurately for tight oil reservoir with low production rate and low pressure gradient. Both analytical and numerical solutions are obtained for the new non-Darcy flow model. First, a Buckley–Leverett-type analytical solution is derived with this non-Darcy flow equation. Then, a numerical model has been developed for implementing this non-Darcy flow model for accurate simulation of multidimensional porous and fractured tight oil reservoirs. Finally, the numerical studies on an actual field example in China demonstrate the non-negligible effect of boundary layer on fluid flow in tight formations.
