Bioresource based blends exploit the synergy between polymers derived from renewable resource and commercial polymers to obtain desirable physical, mechanical, and biodegradable properties. With the aim to develop a sustainable resource based biodegradable mulch films, nanostructured blends of epoxies of linseed oil (LOE) and dehydrated castor oil (DCOE) with poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were prepared in the weight ratios of 20/80, 50/50 and 80/20. Microwave-assisted blending was used for the synthesis of DCOE/LOE blends with PVA and the results were compared with conventional solution blending using FT-IR, TGA-DTA and optical measurements. The results revealed that microwave-assisted blending proved to be an efficient method for the formation of compatible blends in a short span of time as compared to conventional solution blending. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis of DCOE/PVA and LOE/PVA blends synthesized by microwave-assisted method confirmed the formation of a nanostructured blend. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respirometry and mechanical measurements were carried out to compare the morphology, biodegradability, and the mechanical strength of DCOE/PVA and LOE/PVA blends. It was observed that DCOE/PVA blends exhibited higher biodegradability, better mechanical properties, and lower moisture absorption characteristics as compared to LOE/PVA blends. The mechanical strength, moisture absorption, and biodegradability of these blends were also compared with blends of other bioresource based polymers such as sugarcane bagasse (SCB), waste gelation (WG), apple peal (AP), and starch/glycerol with PVA, as available from the cited literature in the text.  相似文献

The main shortcomings of biodegradable starch/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) film are hydrophilicity and poor mechanical properties. With an aim to overcome these disadvantages, cornstarch was methylated and blend films were prepared by mixing methylated-cornstarch (MCS) with PVA. The mechanical properties, water resistance and biodegradability of the MCS/PVA film were investigated. It was found that MCS/PVA film had higher water resistance than the native starch/PVA film. However, the water resistance of MCS/PVA films did not have significant difference with the increase in the degree of substitution (DS) of the methylated starch from 0.096 to 0.864. Enzymatic, microbiological and soil burial biodegradation results indicated that the biodegradability of the MCS/PVA film strongly depended on the starch proportion in the film matrix. The degradation rate of starch in the starch/PVA film was hindered by blending starch with PVA. Both tensile strength and percent elongation at break of the MCS/PVA film were improved as DS of the methylated starch increased. Conversely, increasing the methylated starch proportion in film matrix deteriorated both tensile strength and percent elongation at break of the film.  相似文献

The influence of Shorea robusta natural filler loading (5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 v/v%) on the mechanical, dynamic mechanical, biodegradability, and thermal stability of the polyester composite was analyzed. The composites were fabricated using hand lay-up method. The maximum mechanical properties, storage modulus, and glass transition temperature were observed for the composite with 20 v/v% filler. The peak height of Tanδ was found to be lesser for the same. Thermal analysis results revealed that the thermal stability of composite increased with the incorporation of Shorea robusta as natural filler. Biodegradability testing showed that the addition of filler resulted in weight loss of the composite under soil burial test.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is studying the effect of incorporation of Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNT) into two different nanocomposites in poly vinyl alcohol (PVA)/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and PVA/Polyethylene glycol (PEG). MWCNT were synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method using acetylene and Fe/Co/Al2O3 as carbon precursor and catalyst, respectively. Nitric acid and sulfuric acid were used for purification and functionalization of MWCNT. Afterward, highly pure and functionalized MWCNT (0, 0.02, and 0.05% w/w) were incorporated in PVA/PVP and PVA/PEG to synthesize PVA/PVP/MWCNT and PVA/PEG/MWCNT nanocomposites hydrogel membranes that cross-linked by freezing–thawing. PEG and PVP were selected in these nanocomposites as dispersion matrix for MWCNT as well as for increasing the elasticity of the nanocomposites membranes. The morphology of the hydrogels was characterized by SEM, FTIR, XRD, TGA, and the mechanical properties of the hydrogel membranes were investigated. The swelling behavior in different pH-buffer solutions was studied as well as studying weight loss percentage and swelling kinetic. The drug releasing process of the hydrogel membranes was investigated using salicylic acid as a model drug. It was found that MWCNT are dispersed well into the polymers and crystallinity, mechanical properties and thermal stability of the hydrogels contain MWCNT are better than that without MWCNT. Maximum degree of swelling was observed at pH 7 and swelling degree increases with increasing the ratio of MWCNT in the hydrogels from 0.02 to 0.05%. All hydrogel membranes followed non-Fickian mechanism and drug releasing were controlled by varying the pH and amount of MWCNT.  相似文献

Investigation of the biodegradability of water soluble poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) based blown films was carried out under different lab-scale environmental conditions. In particular respirometric tests were utilized in order to evaluate the biodegradability of PVA films in composting, in modified Sturm test and in soil burial simulation tests. Several microbial inocula present in river water, mature compost, forest and farm soils as well as sewage sludge from municipal and paper mill wastewater treatments plants were utilized for the relevant tests. A mixed PVA-degrading microbial culture was obtained by a common enrichment procedure by using sewage sludge from paper mill as inoculum; this culture was tentatively utilized for the isolation of single PVA-degrading microorganisms. As a first result we can stress that significant biodegradation extent in fairly low incubation time can be obtained only in the presence of acclimated microbial populations such as those deriving from paper mill sewage sludge, in liquid cultures. Nevertheless separation of single degrading microbial species was impossible most likely due to the establishment of symbiotic or commensal interactions between the single components of the PVA-degrading mixed cultures. On the other hand, limited mineralization rates were recorded in solid cultures in the presence of soil or compost. Finally, a mechanism of degradation of polymer chains unlike random or unzipping was suggested in the presence of either PVA-degrading mixed culture and its filtrate by means of viscometric determinations of molecular weight within the time.  相似文献

Composite materials, made by replacing traditional materials, are used because of their capability to produce tailor-made, desirable properties such as high tensile strength, low thermal expansion, and high strength to weight ratio. The need for the development of new materials is essential and growing day by day. The natural sisal/general polymer (GP) reinforced with nanoclay composites has become more attractive due to its high specific strength, light weight, and biodegradability. In this study, sisal–nanoclay composite is developed and its mechanical properties such as tensile strength, flexural strength, and impact strength are evaluated. The interfacial properties, internal cracks, and internal structure of the fractured surface are evaluated using scanning electron microscope. The thermal disintegration of composites are evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis. The results indicate that the incorporation of nanoclay in sisal fiber/GP can improve its properties and can be used as a substitute material for glass fiber-reinforced polymer composites.  相似文献

Polysaccharides and proteins are abundantly found in nature and are highly recommended for developing eco-friendly materials due to their special properties (biodegradability, biocompatibility, non-toxicity, low cost, etc.). However, they sometimes fail to meet specific requirements due to poor mechanical and physical properties. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is one of the promising synthetic polymers with superior properties that can be blended with natural polymers for obtaining novel biomaterials with improved performances. This review addresses recent advance in PVA/polysaccharides and PVA/proteins biocomposites design and fabrication, mainly for the past two decades.  相似文献

Sodium poly(gamma-glutamic acid) (PGA), a water-soluble and biodegradable polypeptide, was reacted with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to form hydrogel without any chemical treatment. The gelation occurred probably due to physical cross-linking of polymer chains by interpenetrating hydrogen bonding. From the results of thermal analysis, PGA/PVA exhibited better thermal stability than native PVA. Although the swelling ratio decreased with the increase of PGA content, however, the water resistance and retention were improved. The tensile strength of the PGA/PVA hydrogel membranes was about 15-30% lower than that of the native PVA, whereas the elongation was increased 2.0-2.6 times. The amount of protein adsorbed and platelets adhered on the PGA/PVA membranes were significantly curtailed with increasing PGA content, thereby showing improved blood compatibility. The as-fabricated hydrogels were proven to be non-cytotoxic evaluated in vitro by L-929 fibroblast incubation. Overall results demonstrate that the non-cytotoxic PGA/PVA hydrogels, due to better water resistance, mechanical properties and blood compatibility could be very promising candidates for blood-contacting medical devices.  相似文献

Nanoscale poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) fiber (100–500 nm) aggregates were prepared with an electrospinning technique. Additionally, a chemical crosslinking method was used to crosslink the nanoscale PVA fiber aggregates. Differential scanning calorimetry, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy techniques were employed to characterize the PVA fiber aggregates. The different crosslinking densities of the PVA fiber aggregates were obtained through the control of the weight percentage of glyoxal to PVA. The crosslinking densities due to heat treatment and chemical crosslinking were studied. The influence of heat treatment could be neglected in contrast to chemical crosslinking when the curing temperature was 120 °C. The primary factor that affected the crosslinking density was the volume of the chemical crosslinking agent. The results showed that the properly crosslinked PVA fiber aggregates had better antiwater solubility and mechanical properties than the noncrosslinked PVA fiber aggregates. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study investigated the biodegradability of PBS and bio-flour, which is a poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) bio-composite filled with rice-husk flour (RHF) reinforcing, in natural and aerobic compost soil. The percentage weight loss and the reduction in mechanical properties of PBS and the bio-composites in the compost soil burial test were significantly greater than those in the natural soil burial test. These results were supported by degraded surface of PBS and bio-composites observed through morphological study and the total colony count of natural soil was lower than that of compost soil. The biodegradability of the bio-composites was enhanced with increasing bio-flour content because the bio-flour is easily attacked by microorganisms. As the biodegradability test progressed over time up to 80 days, the molecular weight of PBS decreased in the soil burial test. We confirmed by attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) analyser that the chemical structures of PBS and the bio-composites were changed after the compost burial test. The glass transition temperature (Tg), melting temperature (Tm), crystallization temperature (Tc), heat of fusion (ΔHf) and heat of crystallization (ΔHc) of the natural and composted soil tested PBS were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). From the results, we concluded that use of these bio-composites will reduce the environmental problems associated with waste pollution and the study findings support the predicted application of bio-composites as “green-composites” or “eco-materials”.  相似文献

There is growing interest in the use of fuel cells (FC) with hydrogen as the main fuel for stationary, mobile, and transportation applications. In the FC concept membranes play increasingly important roles. Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are considered as the most promising fuel cell technology for a wide range of applications due to the stable operation, the high energy generation yield and the simplicity of the system. In this work, we develop different types of membranes based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). PVA is a water-soluble polymer that is used in practical applications because of its easy preparation, excellent chemical resistance, thermal and mechanical properties. Crosslinking of the PVA was performed by gamma irradiation since radiation chemistry is found to be a very effective method for constructing three-dimensional polymeric networks. The samples prepared in this way were then immersed in the alkaline solution over a certain period of time to turn them into conductive membranes. Ionic conductivity of the PVA hydrogels, was then measured as a function of concentration of KOH solutions and temperature. Cyclic voltammetry of these PVA hydrogel electrolytes was performed to determine the width of the electrochemical stability window. We examined these membranes impregnated with saturated 6 M KOH electrolyte as polymer membrane for fuel cells application. Our experiments showed that PEMFCs with PVA and Nafion® membranes had similar polarization curves, under same conditions. Furthermore, PVA membranes proved to be stable during the real cell tests. This study offers a possibility for more earnest approach to the use of PVA membranes for fuel cell applications.  相似文献

In this research, an innovative Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) reverse osmosis (RO) membrane with exceptional attributes was fabricated. Graphene Oxide (GO) nanosheets and Pluronic F-127 were infused within crosslinked PVA to fabricate thin film mixed matrix membranes. The newly synthesized membranes were evaluated in terms of several parameters like surface roughness, hydrophilicity, salt rejection, water permeability, Chlorine tolerance and anti-biofouling property, utilizing a dead-end RO filtration unit. Typical characterization techniques were used to assess the characteristics of the membranes. These include SEM, AFM, contact angle measurements and mechanical strength analysis. The conjugation of Pluronic F-127 and GO enhanced the overall performance of the membranes. The modified membranes surfaces had less roughness and higher hydrophilicity in comparison with the unmodified ones. This research showed that membranes that contained 0.08 wt% and 0.1 wt% GO exhibited superior selectivity, mechanical strength, Chlorine tolerance and anti-biofouling property. The truly significant outcome to evolve from this investigation is that improvements have been accomplished while PVA was used as a stand-alone RO layer without the use of any substrate. This study showed that crosslinking of PVA and modifying it with proper fillers overcame the common PVA downsides, primarily swelling and rupture under exceptionally high pressure.  相似文献

2,6-Bis(hydroxymethyl)-4-methyl phenol and 1,4-bis(hydroxymethyl) benzene have been used as crosslinkers in sulphonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK DS 65%, IEC 1.84 mequiv./g) for the preparation of proton exchange membranes (PEMs). Crosslinking of SPEEK has been achieved by thermally activated bridging of the polymer chain with the hydroxymethyl group of crosslinker through condensation reaction with sulphonic acid group. The physico-chemical properties of uncrosslinked and crosslinked membrane were evaluated in terms of ion exchange capacity (IEC), water uptake, ionic conductivity and mechanical properties. The crosslinked membrane showed controlled swelling, ionic conductivity of 25–50 mS/cm at 80 °C and good mechanical properties. The chemical stability of the crosslinked membranes was studied by Fenton's test. The % loss in weight and changes in physico-chemical properties of the treated membranes were determined.  相似文献

To better investigate the degradation and biocompatibility of waterborne biodegradable polyurethanes for tissue engineering, a series of new waterborne biodegradable polyurethanes (PEGPUs) with low degree of crosslinking was synthesized using IPDI, BDO and L-lysine as hard segments, PCL and PEG as soft segment. The bulk structures and properties of the prepared polyurethanes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), tensile mechanical tests and water contact angle (WCA) measurements. The degree of microphase separation was slightly improved because of the lowered crosslinking degree of these PEGPUs in comparison with the high cross-linking degree samples, leading to good mechanical properties, as indicated by DSC and stress-strain data. Moreover, biodegradability of the polyurethanes was evaluated in phosphate buffer solutions (PBS) under different pH values and enzymatic solution at pH 7.4 through weight loss monitoring. The results suggested that the degradation of these PEGPUs was closely related to their bulk and surface properties. And the degradation products didn’t show apparent inhibition effect against fibroblasts in vitro. These studies demonstrated that the waterborne biodegradable polyurethanes could find potential use in soft tissue engineering and tissue regeneration.  相似文献

Using polyethylene glycol(PEG) or glycerol as the plasticizer, we synthesized the hydrogels from poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate(PEGDA), polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP) and poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) under UV radiation. The effects of different plasticizers on the mechanical properties and adhesion properties of the hydrogels were investigated. The results show that the plasticizer can improve the elongation and peeling force. The most pronounced changes in the tensile property of the hydrogels are due to the addition of glycerol followed by PEG, the lower the plasticizer's molecular weight, the greater its effect. The maximum peeling force is 0.317 or 0.257 N with PEG or glycerol as plasticizer, respectively, and their adhesion properties are due to the formation of hydrogen bonds.  相似文献

To enhance the mechanical and antibacterial properties of silver nanoparticle impregnated cellulosic fibers, carboxy-cellulose nanocrystals(CCNs) were grafted with chitooligosaccharide(COS), which was used as a stabilizer for silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Nanofibrous membranes reinforced with silver nanoparticle impregnated cellulosic fibers(CCN-COS-AgNP) were prepared via electrospinning using polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) as a matrix. The effects of CCN-COS-AgNP contents on the morphology, surface composition, mechanical properties, and antibacterial performances of the prepared CCN-COS-AgNP/PVA membranes were examined. The addition of CCN-COS-AgNP certainly improved the mechanical properties and antibacterial performances of the PVA nanofibers. The tensile strength was significantly increased from 4.40 MPa to 8.60 MPa when 8% CCN-COS-AgNP(mass ratio) was introduced. When 10%(mass ratio) CCN-COS-AgNP was added, the nanofibers showed an excellent antibacterial activity for S. aureus(Staphylococcus aureus) and E. coli(Escherichia coli), with the maximum inhibition zones of 2.30 and 1.60 cm, respectively. Moreover, the 2%(mass ratio) CCN-COS-AgNP/PVA fibrous membrane showed 126% cell viability for mg63 human osteoblasts. The electrospun PVA membrane has great potential application in biomedical field.  相似文献

Tissue engineering scaffolds produced by electrospinning feature a structural similarity to the natural extracellular matrix. In this study, poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) and chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were simultaneously electrospun from two different syringes and mixed on the rotating drum to prepare the nanofibrous composite membrane. The composite membrane was crosslinked by glutaraldehyde vapor to maintain its mechanical properties and fiber morphology in wet stage. Morphology, shrinkage, absorption in phosphate buffered solution (PBS) and mechanical properties of the electrospun membranes were characterized. Fibroblast viability on electrospun membranes was discussed by MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide] assay and cell morphology after 7 days of culture. Results indicated that the PBS absorption of the composite membranes, no matter crosslinked or not, was higher than the electrospun PLGA membrane due to the introduction of hydrophilic components, chitosan and PVA. After crosslinking, the composite membrane had a little shrinkage after incubating in PBS. The crosslinked composite membrane also showed moderate tensile properties. Cell culture suggested that electrospun PLGA-chitosan/PVA membrane tended to promote fibroblast attachment and proliferation. It was assumed that the nanofibrous composite membrane of electrospun PLGA-chitosan/PVA could be potentially used for skin reconstruction.  相似文献

Summary: Commercially available polymer Bioflex® 219F, blend of polylactic acid and biodegradable co-polyester, was used for film preparation, performed on mono-extrusion blown moulding machine. Resulting thin film was investigated on biodegradability in composting conditions for 6 weeks. The influence of microbial attack on mechanical, physico-chemical properties, weight loss and surface morphology was tested weekly. The results obtained during 6 weeks of composting indicate relatively good accessibility to biological degradation. Moreover, the time course of studied properties was observed through the test period.  相似文献
