Summary An estimator of the asymptotic variance of (a randomly stopped) linear combination of a function of order statistics is considered and its asymptotic normality is studied under appropriate regularity conditions. This paper describes the performance of a general-purpose GRG code for nonlinear programming in solving geometric programs. The main conclusions drawn from the experiments reported are: (i) GRG competes well with special-purpose geometric programming codes in solving geometric programs; and (ii) standard time, as defined by Colville, is an inadequate means of compensating for different computing environments while comparing optimization algorithms.This research was partially supported by the Office of Naval Research under Contracts Nos. We study the problem described by the title under the real-time constraint that no block coding is allowed. A step-length algorithm is an essential part of many descent methods for unconstrained and constrained optimization. This paper investigates the problem of control of switched linear systems evolving inR 2. The concept of an opposition point is introduced, and its properties related to the existence of closed trajectories in the phase plane are investigated. The Frank—Wolfe theorem states that a quadratic function, bounded below on a nonempty polyhedral convex set, attains its infimum there. This paper gives sufficient conditions under which a function either attains its infimum on a nonempty polyhedral convex set or is unbounded below on some halfline of that set. In this paper, the authors investigate Edgeworth type expansions of certain transformations of some statistics of Gaussian ARMA processes. They also investigate transformations which will make the second order part of the Edgeworth expansions vanish. The testing of optimization algorithms requires the running of problems with ill-conditioned Hessians. For constrained problems, it is the projection of the Hessian onto the space determined by the active constraints that must be ill conditioned. In this note it is argued that unless the Hessian and the constraints are constructed together, the constrained Hessian is likely to be well conditioned. The optimal distribution of the workload in a system of interconnected computer units is considered. Formulated as a team decision problem with a singular cost criterion and with equality and inequality constraints, it is shown that the problem admits always a unique piecewise linear strategy which is globally optimal. The controllability and attainability properties of switched linear systems in the plane are investigated. A main result is the state-space decomposition theorem which classifies various convex regions inR 2 according to their controllability properties. Interest in linear programming has been intensified recently by Karmarkar’s publication in 1984 of an algorithm that is claimed to be much faster than the simplex method for practical problems. We review classical barrier-function methods for nonlinear programming based on applying a logarithmic transformation to inequality constraints. For the special case of linear programming, the transformed problem can be solved by a “projected Newton barrier” method. This method is shown to be equivalent to Karmarkar’s projective method for a particular choice of the barrier parameter. We then present details of a specific barrier algorithm and its practical implementation. Numerical results are given for several non-trivial test problems, and the implications for future developments in linear programming are discussed. Summary Multi-sample cluster analysis, the problem of grouping samples, is studied from an information-theoretic viewpoint via Akaike's Information Criterion (AIC). This criterion combines the maximum value of the likelihood with the number of parameters used in achieving that value. The multi-sample cluster problem is defined, and AIC is developed for this problem. The form of AIC is derived in both the multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) model and in the multivariate model with varying mean vectors and variance-covariance matrices. Numerical examples are presented for AIC and another criterion calledw-square. The results demonstrate the utility of AIC in identifying the best clustering alternatives. The optimal design of a pitched laminated wood beam is considered. An engineering formulation is given in which the volume of the beam is minimized. The problem is then reformulated and solved as a generalized geometric (signomial) program. A method of conjugate directions, the projection method, for solving unconstrained minimization problems is presented. Under the assumption of uniform strict convexity, the method is shown to converge to the global minimizer of the unconstrained problem and to have an (n – 1)-step superlinear rate of convergence. Several solution concepts have been defined for abstract games. Some of these are the core, due to Gillies and Shapley, the Von Neumann-Morgenstern stable sets, and the subsolutions due to Roth. These solution concepts are rather static in nature. In this paper, we propose a new solution concept for abstract games, called the dynamic solution, that reflects the dynamic aspects of negotiation among the players. Some properties of the dynamic solution are studied.
