A novel approach was developed to overcome the non-uniform distribution of grafted polystyrene (PS) chains across proton exchange membranes (PEMs) manufactured using radiation induced graft polymerization of commercialized fluoropolymer films. This process involves the three key steps of grafting of styrene into fluoropolymer powder, processing the grafted powder into membranes, and then obtaining the PEM by sulfonation of these membranes. The structure of the membranes and the PEMs were analyzed by means of infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscope with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX) to demonstrate the uniform distribution of poly(styrene-sulfonic acid) (denoted as PSSA) graft-chains across the PEM. The properties of the resulting PEMs, such as their ion exchange capacity (IEC), water uptake (WU), proton conductivity, dimensional stability, oxidative stability and thermal stability, were also investigated.

A series of sulfonated block poly(ether ether ketone)s with different sulfonic acid group clusters were successfully synthesized by nucleophilic displacement condensation. Membranes were accordingly cast from their DMSO solutions, and fully characterized by determining the ion-exchange capacity, water uptake, proton conductivity, dimensional stabilities and mechanical properties. The experimental results showed that the main properties of the membrane can be tailored by changing the cluster size of sulfonic acid groups. The membrane of block-7c(40) has good mechanical, oxidative and dimensional stabilities together with high proton conductivity (5.09 × 10−2 S cm−1) at 80 °C under 100% relative humidity. The membranes also possess excellent thermal and dimensional stabilities. These polymers are potential and promising proton conducting membrane material for PEM full cell applications.

A new class of sulfonated poly(fluorene-co-sulfone)ether membranes containing perfluorocyclobutane (PFCB) groups were synthesized and characterized in terms of their electrochemical properties as proton exchange membranes for fuel cells. Two monomers, 9,9-bis(4-trifluorovinyloxyphenyl)fluorene and 4,4′-sulfonyl-bis(trifluorovinyloxy)biphenyl were synthesized and statistically copolymerized by thermal [2π + 2π] cycloaddition to yield a series of polymers containing 0–60 mol% of fluorenyl content (PFS-X). The copolymers were then sulfonated using chlorosulfonic acid to afford five kinds of ionomers with different sulfonation levels (SPFS-X), which were cast into membranes and analyzed in terms of electrochemical properties. It was found that the ion exchange capacity (IEC), water uptake, proton conductivity and methanol permeability values of SPFS-X increased with the increment of the sulfonated fluorenyl content. The proton conductivities of SPFS-50 and -60 with high IECs and water uptake values were higher than those of Nafion-115 between 25 and 80 °C. The methanol permeability of SPFS-X was considerably lower than that of Nafion-115.

Methanol permeation is the main issue of Nafion membranes when they are used as a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). In the current study, novel nanocomposite polymer membranes are prepared by the integration of surface-modified sepiolite (MS) in polyvinylidene fluoride grafted polystyrene (PVDF-g-PS) copolymer as PEM in DMFCs. Sepiolite (SP) surface is chemically modified using vinyltriethoxysilane and analyzed by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Nanocomposite PVDF-g-PS/MS membranes are prepared by phase inversion technique and subsequently treated with chlorosulfonic acid to induce sulfonic acid (SO3H) active sites at the membrane surface. The prepared nanocomposite membranes (S-PPMS) are analyzed for their physicochemical characteristics in terms of water uptake percentage, cation exchange capacity, proton conductivity (σ), and methanol permeability. MS dispersion in the copolymer matrix is proved through morphological SEM examination. The S-PPMS membranes exhibit increased proton conductivity due to the presence of well-dispersed MS and surface functional –SO3H groups. A peak power density of 210 mWcm?2 is recorded for S-PPMS10 at 110 °C, which is higher than the output obtained from Nafion-117. These promising results indicate the potential utilization of prepared nanocomposite PEMs for DMFC application.

A novel sulfonated tetraamine, di(triethylammonium)-4,4′-bis(3,4-diaminophenoxy)biphenyl-3,3′-disulfonate (BAPBDS), was successfully synthesized by nucleophilic aromatic substitution of 4,4′-dihydroxybiphenyl with 5-chloro-2-nitroaniline, followed by sulfonation and reduction. A high-temperature polycondensation of sulfonated tetraamine, non-sulfonated tetraamine (4,4′-bis(3,4-aminophenoxy)biphenyl) and 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (a) or 4,4′-binaphthyl-1,1′,8,8′-tetracarboxylic dianydride (b) gave the poly[bis(benzimidazobenzisoquinolinones)] ionomers SPBIBI-a(x) or SPBIBI-b(x), where x refers to the molar percentage of the sulfonated tetraamine monomer. Flexible and tough membranes of high mechanical strength were obtained by solution casting and the electrolyte properties of the polymers were intensively investigated. The ionomer membranes displayed excellent dimensional and hydrolytic stabilities. Moreover, these novel membranes showed proton conductivities comparable to that of Nafion 117, especially at high temperature. In addition, the proton conductivities of the SPBIBI-a ionomer membranes were found to be higher than those of the SPBIBI-b ones due to the weakened acid–base interactions between the pyridinone ring and the sulfonic acid groups. The highest proton conductivity (0.174 S/cm) was obtained for the SPBIBI-a(100) membrane at 100 °C, with an IEC of 2.65 mequiv./g. A combination of excellent dimensional and hydrolytic stabilities indicated that the SPBIBI ionomers were good candidate materials for proton exchange membrane in fuel cell applications.

The single-step synthesis of proton conducting poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) graft copolymer electrolytes is demonstrated. The graft copolymers of PVDF backbone with poly(sulfopropyl methacrylate) (PVDF-g-PSPMA) and poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PVDF-g-PSSA) were synthesized using PVDF as a macroinitiator for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). 1H NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy show that the “grafting from” method using ATRP was successful and the maximum grafting degrees were 35 and 25 wt% for PVDF-g-PSPMA and PVDF-g-PSSA, respectively. The IEC values were 0.63 and 0.45 meq/g, the water uptakes were 46.8 and 33.4 wt% and the proton conductivities were 0.015 and 0.007 S/cm at room temperature, for PVDF-g-PSPMA and PVDF-g-PSSA, respectively. Both membranes exhibited excellent thermal stability up to around 350 °C, verified by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA).

A series of poly(arylene ether sulfone)‐block‐sulfonated polybutadiene (PAES‐b‐sPB) with different ion exchange capacities (IECs) were synthesized and evaluated as proton exchange membranes (PEMs) for possible applications in fuel cells. These sulfonated block copolymers were synthesized via condensation reaction between modified PAES and PB prepolymers, followed by selective post‐sulfonation of PB blocks using acetyl sulfate as the sulfonating reagent. The sulfonic groups were only attached onto PB blocks due to the high reactivity of double bonds to acetyl sulfate. The success of synthesis and selective post‐sulfonation were all confirmed by the Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra. PAES‐b‐sPB had good film‐forming ability and thermal stability. Mechanical properties of membranes varied with the sulfonation. The presence of sulfonic groups increased the tensile strength and Young's modulus but decreased the elongation at break. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed large ionic aggregates in membranes. Phase separation as well as the interconnected sulfonate groups which only localized on flexible PB blocks led to these ionic domains. The proton conductivity increased with the increasing IEC and temperature. With relatively low IEC, most membranes still exhibited sufficient proton conductivity. The above results indicated this strategy could be a prospective choice to prepare novel PEMs.

A series of parent poly(aryl ether ketone)s bearing different content of unsaturated pendant propenyl groups were synthesized via nucleophilic substitution polymerization from 3,3′-diallyl-4,4′-dihydroxybiphenyl, 9,9′-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) fluorene and 4,4′-difluorobenzophenone. The polymers with pendant aliphatic sulfonic acid groups were further synthesized by free radical thiol-ene coupling reactions between 3-mercapto-1-propanesulfonic sodium and the parent propenyl functional copolymers. The resulting sulfonated polymers with high inherent viscosity (1.83-4.69 dL/g) were soluble in polar organic solvents and can form flexible and transparent membranes by casting from their solutions. The copolymers with different ion exchange capacity could be conveniently synthesized by varying the monomers ratios. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to examine the microstructures of the membrane and the results revealed that significant hydrophilic/hydrophobic microphase separation with spherical, uniform-sized (5-10 nm) and well-dispersed hydrophilic domains was afforded. The proton conductivities of the as-prepared membranes and the state-of-the-art Nafion 117 membrane in fully hydrated state were investigated. The results revealed that the proton conductivity of the synthesized membranes increased more remarkably than that of Nafion 117 membrane with increasing temperature. The membrane with 1.69 mequiv/g of IEC had a conductivity of 2.5 × 10−2 Scm−1 at 100 °C. The membranes also possessed excellent mechanical properties, good thermal, oxidative, hydrolytic and dimensional stabilities.

This paper describes the preparation and electrochemical properties of new proton conducting polymer membranes, sulfonated poly(fluorenyl ether) membrane-containing perfluorocyclobutane (PFCB) moieties for fuel cell applications. The sulfonated polymers were prepared via thermal cyclodimerization of 9,9-bis(4-trifluorovinyloxyphenyl)fluorene and subsequent post-sulfonation using chlorosulfonic acid (CSA) as a sulfonating agent. The post-sulfonation reaction was carried out by changing the molar ratio of CSA/repeating unit of the polymer at room temperature for 5 h and the resulting sulfonated polymers showed different degrees of sulfonation (DS) and ion exchange capacities (IEC). With the increment of CSA content, the DS, IEC and water uptake of the sulfonated polymer membranes increased. Their proton conductivity was investigated as a function of temperature. The polymer membrane with an IEC value of 1.86 mmol/g showed a water content of 25% similar to Nafion-115's but showed higher proton conductivity than Nafion-115 over the temperature 25–80 °C. The polymer membrane with lower water uptake and higher IEC showed similar proton conductivity and methanol permeability to Nafion-115. These results confirmed that the sulfonated poly(fluorenyl ether)-containing PFCB groups could be a promising material for fuel cell membranes.

Proton exchange reactions have been performed on tetragonal tungsten bronze-like NaNbWO6 by using nitric acid as an exchanging agent. The characterization of the exchange reaction products has been made by means of chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, and IR spectroscopy. The exchange reaction takes place topotactically and the following formula is proposed for the obtained phase of variable composition: Na1−xHxNbWO6·yH2O (0<x?0.46 and 0?y?0.12). Impedance spectroscopy on the present proton exchanged samples indicated that these samples behaved as solid electrolytes under high humidity. As an example, the compound with the composition Na0.68H0.32NbWO6·0.1 H2O exhibits ionic conductivity of 8×10−3 and 1×10−2 S cm−1 at 70°C and 90°C, respectively.

For polymer electrolyte membrane fuel membrane cell (PEMFC) applications, the effect of electron-withdrawing groups on the properties of sulfonated poly(arylene ether) (SPE) ionomer membranes was investigated. A series of poly(arylene ether)s containing fluorenyl groups and electron-withdrawing groups (sulfone, nitrile, or fluorine) was synthesized, which were sulfonated with chlorosulfonic acid using a flow reactor to obtain the title ionomers. The ionomers had high molecular weight (M> 77 kDa, Mw > 238 kDa) and gave tough, ductile membranes by solution casting. The ion exchange capacity (IEC) of the membranes ranged from 1.6 to 3.5 mequiv/g as determined by titration. The electron-withdrawing groups did not appear to affect the thermal properties (decomposition temperature higher than 200 °C). The presence of nitrile groups, especially at positions meta to the ether linkages, improved the oxidative stability of the SPE membranes, while it led to a deterioration of the hydrolytic stability. The perfluorinated biphenylene groups were effective in providing high mechanical strength with reasonable dimensional change, probably due to a somewhat decreased water absorbability. The SPE membrane containing sulfone groups showed the highest proton conductivity (10−3-10−1 S/cm) at 20-93% RH (relative humidity) and 80 °C. The nitrile-containing SPE membrane showed smaller apparent activation energies for oxygen and hydrogen permeability and is thus considered to be a possible candidate for applications in PEMFCs.

Sulfonated polyaryletherketones (SPAEK) bearing four sulfonic acid groups on the phenyl side groups were synthesized. The benzophenone moiety of polymer backbone was further reduced to benzydrol group with sodium borohydride. The membranes were crosslinked by acid-catalyzed Friedel-Crafts reaction without sacrifice of sulfonic acid groups and ion exchange capacity (IEC) values. Crosslinked membranes with the same IEC value but different water uptake could be prepared. The optimal crosslinking condition was investigated to achieve lower water uptake, better chemical stability (Fenton's test), and higher proton conductivity. In addition, the hydrophilic ionic channels from originally course and disordered could be modified to be narrow and continuous by this crosslinking method. The crosslinked membranes, CS4PH-40-PEKOH (IEC = 2.4 meq./g), reduced water uptake from 200 to 88% and the weight loss was reduced from 11 to 5% during the Fenton test compared to uncrosslinked one (S4PH-40-PEK). The membrane showed comparable proton conductivity (0.01–0.19 S/cm) to Nafion 212 at 80°C from low to high relative humidity (RH). Single H2/O2 fuel cell based on the crosslinked SPAEK with catalyst loading of 0.25 mg/cm2 (Pd/C) exhibited a peak power density of 220.3 mW/cm2, which was close to that of Nafion 212 (214.0 mW/cm2) at 80°C under 53% RH. These membranes provide a good option as proton exchange membrane with high ion exchange capacity for fuel cells.

Poly(ether ketone)s bearing pendent sulfonate groups (SPEK‐x/y/z) have been successfully synthesized via copolyacylation of a presulfonated monomer SBP and two isomeric AB‐type self‐condensable comonomers, that is, 4‐phenoxybenzoic acid (p‐POBA) and 3‐phenoxybenzoic acid (m‐POBA). Proton‐exchange membranes (PEMs) with precisely controlled ion‐exchange capacity (IEC) and high strength can be readily prepared from these ionomers. PEMs prepared from p‐POBA other than m‐POBA exhibit much higher dimensional stability and proton conductivity at elevated temperature above 60 °C, showing prominent isomeric (para vs. meta) effects of polymer structural units. Furthermore, properties of PEMs prepared from p‐POBA are optimized by tuning IEC. SPEK‐1.0/2.2/0 with an IEC of 1.84 mmol g?1 exhibits acceptable swelling, much higher proton conductivity, and lower methanol permeability than commercial Nafion 115, implying potential application in direct methanol fuel cells. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel series of sulfonated block copolymers were successfully synthesized by the condensation of modified poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) and polybutadiene (PB), followed by the selective post-sulfonation of PB blocks using acetyl sulfate as the sulfonating reagent. The sulfonic acid groups were only attached onto PB segments due to the high reactivity of double bonds to sulfonating reagent. The degree of sulfonation was controlled by changing the feed ratio of sulfonating reagent to block copolymer. PEEK-b-sPB could be easily cast into flexible and transparent membranes. The obtained membranes exhibited good thermal stability and satisfied mechanical properties. Tensile test showed the incorporation of sulfonate groups into PB blocks resulted in an increase in tensile strength and a decrease in elongation at break. TEM images revealed the existence of ionic spherical domains with the average sizes of 50-100 nm. Some of these small domains further aggregated to form large hydrophilic regions. The proton conductivity values were measured in the range of 10−2 S/cm in water and increased with increasing IEC and temperature.

2,6-Bis(hydroxymethyl)-4-methyl phenol and 1,4-bis(hydroxymethyl) benzene have been used as crosslinkers in sulphonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK DS 65%, IEC 1.84 mequiv./g) for the preparation of proton exchange membranes (PEMs). Crosslinking of SPEEK has been achieved by thermally activated bridging of the polymer chain with the hydroxymethyl group of crosslinker through condensation reaction with sulphonic acid group. The physico-chemical properties of uncrosslinked and crosslinked membrane were evaluated in terms of ion exchange capacity (IEC), water uptake, ionic conductivity and mechanical properties. The crosslinked membrane showed controlled swelling, ionic conductivity of 25–50 mS/cm at 80 °C and good mechanical properties. The chemical stability of the crosslinked membranes was studied by Fenton's test. The % loss in weight and changes in physico-chemical properties of the treated membranes were determined.

A novel sulfonated diamine, 1,2-dihydro-2-(3-sulfonic-4-aminophenyl)-4-[4-(3-sulfonic-4-aminophenoxy)-phenyl]-phthalazin-1-one(S-DHPZDA), was successfully synthesized and two series of six-membered sulfonated polyimides (SPIs) were prepared from 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (NTDA), S-DHPZDA, and nonsulfonated diamines DHPZDA or 4,4′-diaminodiphenyl ether (ODA). The chemical structure of the S-DHPZDA and the SPIs were characterized by 1H NMR and FT-IR. Tough, brownish and transparent membranes were cast from SPIs’ solution in NMP. The water uptake, swelling ratio, chemical and thermal stability, hydrolytic and oxidative stability as well as proton conductivity of these new polymers were investigated systematically. Compared with Nafions, the obtained SPI membranes have onset decomposed temperatures of these two series SPIs were above 318 °C and decomposed temperature of main chain were 565 °C and excellent dimension stabilities on similar IECs. Introduction of phthalazinone moieties had improved the copolyimides’ solubility in polar aprotic organic solvents like m-cresol, NMP, DMSO, DMF etc. The SPIs had high proton conductivity (σ) in the order of magnitude of 10−3 to 10−2 S cm−1 depending on the degree of sulfonation (DS) of the polymers.

Linear and angled monomers were incorporated into the main chain of a polyimide in order to investigate the effect of kinked versus linear polymers on membrane properties such as water uptake and proton conductivity. Polymers prepared using linear 4,4′-sulfonyldianiline, SPI1, and using angled 3,4′-sulfonyldianiline, SPI2, were cast into membranes possessing ion exchange capacities that varied from 0.79 to 2.75 meq g−1. Membranes are thermally stable up to 300 °C under air. Proton conductivity of both membranes increases with temperature to values of 0.1-0.2 S cm−1. The conductivity of angled, SPI2 membranes is greater than those prepared from SPI1 for a given IEC but water uptakes are lower. These differences are attributed to increased entanglements of the angled polymers, which limits the degree of swelling and increases the proton concentration. These results may be important in the design of proton conducting membranes from other rigid polyarylenes.

With chlorosulfonic acid as sulfonating agent, sulfonated poly(phenylene oxide) (SPPO) was prepared by homogeneous method and SPPO membranes were cast from its solutions in dimethylacetamide. The obtained membrane of SPPO was heat-treated and stretched with different forces by thermal mechanical analyzer under its glass transition temperature. In addition, the effects of stretching and heating on ion conductivity of SPPO were investigated by using Solatron phase analyzer. It was shown that the mechanical stretching of SPPO has great effect on electric properties of SPPO under proper heating treatment, and the highest conductivities achieved were increased about 10 times that of the original membranes and reached 0.0983 S cm−1. The X-ray diffraction indicated that the molecular chains of SPPO were arranged more regularly under constraint during the heat treatment, and the scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that the morphologies of the film surfaces possessed more co-continuous regions and the hydrophilic ionic sulfonic acid groups orientated at stretching direction and connected more regularly, which facilitated the exchange and transfer of hydrated proton among these hydrophilic sulfonic acid groups.
