To evaluate the applicability of EDI to material analysis as a new ionization method, a comparison of EDI with solvent-free matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) and laser desorption ionization (LDI) was made for the analysis of organic pigments, e.g. Pigment Yellow 93, Pigment Yellow 180, and Pigment Green 36, as test samples, which are poorly soluble in standard solvents. In EDI, the samples were prepared in two ways: deposition of suspended samples in appropriate solvents and dried on the substrate, and the direct deposition of the powder samples on the substrate. No matrices were used. Both sample preparation methods gave similar mass spectra. Equally strong signals of [M + H](+) and [M - H](-) ions were observed with some fragment ions for azo pigments in the respective positive or negative mode of operation. For the powder sample of the phthalocyanine pigment PG36, M(+*) and [M + H](+) in the positive mode and M(-*) in the negative mode of operation were observed as major ions. Positive-mode, solvent-free MALDI gave M(+), [M + H](+) and [M + Na](+) and negative mode gave [M - H](-) depending on the sample preparation. As solvent-free MALDI, EDI was also found to be an easy-to-operate, versatile method for the samples as received.  相似文献

Collisional activation of keV thiophene-2-one radical cations 1(+*) with O(2) or NO(*) as the target gas leads to a desulfuration reaction. This peculiar reaction is insignificant or absent with other targets such as helium, argon, methane or nitrogen. The radical cations produced in this desulfuration reaction are most probably vinylketene ions, as indicated by a triple mass spectrometric (MS/MS/MS) experiment performed on a 'hybrid' tandem mass spectrometer of sector--quadrupole--sector configuration. Tentatively, it is proposed that population of an excited state accounts for the non-ergodic behavior of 1(+*) upon collision with oxygen or nitric oxide. Ab initio molecular orbital calculations using molecular orbital theory (UMP2, UCCSD(T)) and density functional theory (B3LYP) with 6--31G(d,p) and 6--311++G(d,p) basis sets were used to evaluate the relative energy of the excited quartet state of 1(+*) radical cations. This quartet state is calculated to lie about 3.6 eV above the (2)A(") ground state and 0.9 eV above the C(4)H(4)O(+*)+S dissociation products. It is proposed that the quartet ion serves as the precursor for the spontaneous desulfuration.  相似文献

Field desorption (FD) mass spectrometry was applied to the determination of the molecular masses of carotenoids, natural carotenoid derivatives and their chemical derivatives. All the carotenoids examined gave the molecular ion as the base peak with negligible fragment ions. Carotenoid glucoside and its fatty acid monoester were successfully determined without acetylation, whereas carotenoic acids (carboxylate and sulphate) needed to be converted into methyl esters prior to analysis. The applicable ranges of molecular masses and polarity were very wide. In addition, carotenoid glycoside gave only [M]+˙ without [M + H]+˙ and [M + cation]+˙. The numbers of carbonyl groups, primary and/or secondary hydroxyl groups and total hydroxyl groups could be directly determined according to the increase in mass units of the carotenoids after chemical reduction, acetylation and trimethylsilylation, respectively. Owing to the negligible fragment ions, FD analysis was also suitable for carotenoids containing small amounts of impurities or other carotenoids. Hence this technique is useful for determining the molecular masses of carotenoids and the number of modifiable groups in carotenoids.  相似文献

A listing of carotenoids with heteroatoms (X = F, Cl, Br, I, Si, N, S, Se, Fe) directly attached to the carotenoid carbon skeleton has been compiled. The 178 listed carotenoids with C, H, X atoms demonstrate that the classical division of carotenoids into hydrocarbon carotenoids (C, H) and xanthophylls (C, H, O) has become obsolete.  相似文献

Host-guest chemistry and photoinduced electron-transfer processes have been studied in the systems containing Ru(bpy)3 complex covalently linked to viologen as a guest molecule and cucurbit[n]urils (n = 7, 8) as host molecules in aqueous solution. The Ru(bpy)3-viologen complex, [Ru(2,2'-bipyridine)2(4-(4-(1'-methyl-4,4'-bipyridinediium-1-yl)butyl)-4'-methyl-2,2'-bipyridine)]Cl4 (denoted as Ru2+-MV2+, 1) was shown to form stable 1:1 inclusion complexes with cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) and cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]). The binding modes are slightly different with CB[7] and CB[8]. CB[7] preferentially binds to part of the viologen residue in 1 together with the butyl chain, whereas CB[8] preferentially encloses the whole viologen residue. Photoinduced intramolecular electron transfer from the excited-state of the Ru moiety to MV2(+) which is inserted into the cavity of the CBs occurred. Long-lived charge-separated states Ru3(+)-MV(+*) were generated with the lifetimes of 280 ns with CB[7] and 2060 ns with CB[8]. This shows that CBs can slow down the charge recombination within supramolecular systems, and the difference in lifetimes seems to be due to the difference in binding modes. In the presence of a sacrificial electron donor triethanolamine, light-driven formation of a dimer of MV(+*) inside the CB[8] cavity was observed. This "locked" molecular dimer can be "unlocked" by molecular oxygen to give back the original form of the molecular dyad 1 with the MV2(+) moiety inserted in the cavity of CB[8]. The processes could be repeated several times and showed nice reversibility.  相似文献

The fragmentation of the sodium adduct ions for tert-butoxycarbonyl-L-prolyl-L-proline ethyl ester (Boc-L-Pro-L-Pro-OEt) was compared with that for Boc-D-Pro-L-Pro-OEt in positive-ion electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry. In the collision-induced dissociation (CID) mass spectra of the [M + Na](+) ions, the abundance of the [M + Na - C(CH(3))(3) + H](+) ion, which is due to the loss of a tert-butyl group from the [M + Na](+) ion for Boc-D-Pro-L-Pro-OEt, was about eight times higher than that for Boc-L-Pro-L-Pro-OEt. In addition, in the CID spectra of the sodium adduct fragment ion ([M + Na - Boc + H](+)), the abundance of the [M + Na - Boc - prolylresidue + H](+) ion, which is due to the loss of prolyl residue from the [M + Na - Boc + H](+) ion for Boc-L-Pro-L-Pro-OEt, was about five times higher than that for Boc-D-Pro-L-Pro-OEt. These results indicate that Boc-L-Pro-L-Pro-OEt was distinguished from Boc-D-Pro-L-Pro-OEt by the CID mass spectra of the sodium adduct ions in ESI mass spectrometry. The optimized geometries of the [M + Na](+) and the [M + Na - Boc + H](+) ions calculated by ab initio molecular orbital calculations suggest that the chiral recognition of these diastereomers was due to the difference of the orientation of a sodium ion to the oxygen and nitrogen atoms in dipeptide derivatives, and to the difference of the total energies between them.  相似文献

In associative charge transfer (ACT) reactions, a core ion activates ligand molecules by partial charge transfer. The activated ligand polymerizes, and the product oligomer takes up the full charge from the core ion. In the present system, benzene(+*) (Bz(+*)) reacts with two propene (Pr) molecules to form a covalently bonded ion, C(6)H(6)(+*) + 2 C(3)H(6) --> C(6)H(12)(+*) + C(6)H(6). The ACT reaction is activated by a partial charge transfer from Bz(+*) to Pr in the complex, and driven to completion by the formation of a covalent bond in the polymerized product. An alternative channel forms a stable association product (Bz.Pr)(+*), with an ACT/association product ratio of 60:40% that is independent of pressure and temperature. In contrast to the Bz(+*)/propene system, ACT polymerization is not observed in the Bz(+*)/ethylene (Et) system since charge transfer in the Bz(+*)(Et) complex is inefficient to activate the reaction. The roles of charge transfer in these complexes are verified by ab initio calculations. The overall reaction of Bz(+*) with Pr follows second-order kinetics with a rate constant of k (304 K) = 2.1 x 10(-12) cm(3) s(-1) and a negative temperature coefficient of k = aT(-5.9) (or an activation energy of -3 kcal/mol). The kinetic behavior is similar to sterically hindered reactions and suggests a [Bz(+*) (Pr)]* activated complex that proceeds to products through a low-entropy transition state. The temperature dependence shows that ACT reactions can reach a unit collision efficiency below 100 K, suggesting that ACT can initiate polymerization in cold astrochemical environments.  相似文献

The enol of glycine, H(2)N-CH&dbond;C(OH)(2), is generated in the gas phase by neutralization of the corresponding radical cation, which is available by dissociative electron ionization of isoleucine. Reionization approximately 0.6 micros later shows that the isolated enol (2) exists and does not isomerize to the significantly more stable glycine molecule, H(2)N--CH(2)--COOH (1); hence the intramolecular tautomerization 2-->1 must be associated with high barriers. The neutralization-reionization reactivity of 1(+*) further confirms that neutral glycine has a canonical structure (1) and is not a zwitterion. The unimolecular chemistry of 1(+*) is dominated by C--C bond cleavage to the immonium ion (+)H(2)NCH(2); in sharp contrast, 2(+*) primarily loses H(2)O. The ylide ion (+)H(3)N--CH(*)--COOH, an intermediate in the water loss from 2(+*), is found to readily equilibrate to 2(+*) prior to dissociation. Tautomers 1(+*) and 2(+*) differ in their charge-stripping behavior, with only 2(+*) forming a stable dication. The radical anions 1(-*) and 2(-*), formed by charge reversal of 1(+*) and 2(+*), respectively, dissociate extensively to (mainly) different closed-shell fragment anions. An important channel is H(*) loss; 1(-*) yields the carboxylate ion H(2)N--CH(2)--COO(-) whereas 2(-*) yields the enolate ion H(2)N--CH=C(OH)O(-).  相似文献

Positive-ion fast atom bombardment (FAB) and B/E linked scan FAB mass spectra of seven carotenoids are reported. In all cases the M ions are observed, and the [M + H]+ ions are absent in the hydrocarbons and weak in the oxygenated compounds. The usefulness of B/E linked scan FAB mass spectra to distinguish isomers and to attribute the loss of toluene from the M to an ionic fragmentation and not to a thermal process is discussed.  相似文献

This report describes that a regular positive electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (MS) analysis of terpendoles often causes unexpected oxygen additions to form [M + H + O]+ and [M + H + 2O]+, which might be a troublesome in the characterization of new natural analogues. The intensities of [M + H + O]+ and [M + H + 2O]+ among terpendoles were unpredictable and fluctuated largely. Simple electrochemical oxidation in electrospray ionization was insufficient to explain the phenomenon. So we studied factors to form [M + H + O]+ and [M + H + 2O]+ using terpendole E and natural terpendoles together with some model indole alkaloids. Similar oxygen addition was observed for 1,2,3,4‐tetrahydrocyclopent[b]indole, which is corresponding to the substructure of terpendole E. In tandem MS experiments, a major fragment ion at m/z 130 from protonated terpendole E was assigned to the substructure containing indole. When the [M + H + O]+ was selected as a precursor ion, the ion shifted to m/z 146. The same 16 Da shift of fragments was also observed for 1,2,3,4‐tetrahydrocyclopent[b]indole, indicating that the oxygen addition of terpendole E took place at the indole portion. However, the oxygen addition was absent for some terpendoles, even whose structure resembles terpendole E. The breakdown curves characterized the tandem MS features of terpendoles. Preferential dissociation into m/z 130 suggested the protonation tendency at the indole site. Terpendoles that are preferentially protonated at indole tend to form oxygen addition peaks, suggesting that the protonation feature contributes to the oxygen additions in some degrees. © 2014 The Authors. Ceramides are important intracellular second messengers that play a role in the regulation of cell growth, differentiation and programmed cell death. Analysis of these second messengers requires sensitive and specific analytical method to detect individual ceramide species and to differentiate between them. Eight molecular species of ceramide were identified from the marine sponge Haliclona cribricutis using electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS). From this marine sponge N-hencicosanoyl (N21:0) to N-hexasanoyl (N26:0) Octadecasphing-4 (E)-enine have been reported for the first time. The ESI-MS spectra gave several strong protonated molecular ion [M+H](+) with the corresponding bis (2-ethyl hexyl) phthalate adduct [M+H+DHEP](+). The collision induced dissociation (CID) on ceramides at m/z 622.7337, 636.7645, 650.7789, 664.7925 and 678.8130 conducted at low-collision energy produced well characteristic product ions at m/z 252.31, 264.32, 278.33, 282.33 and 296 .35 for d18:1 sphingosine regardless of the length of the fatty chain. The MS/MS of the Phthalate adduct [M+H+DHEP](+) at m/z 1013.1820, 1027.1971, 1041.2176, 1055.2394 and 1069.2573 also yielded characterizing product ions for sphingosine and confirmed the molecular ion at m/z 391 for bis (2-ethyl hexyl) phthalate. The major ions in the [M+H](+) and [M+H+DHEP](+) were due to neutral loss of [M+H-H(2)O](+) and [M+H(H(2)O)(2)](+).  相似文献

In catalases, the high redox intermediate known as compound I (Cpd I) is reduced back to the resting state by means of hydrogen peroxide in a 2-electron reaction [Cpd I (Por(*+)-Fe(IV)O) + H(2)O(2) --> Enz (Por-Fe(III)) + H(2)O + O(2)]. It has been proposed that this reaction takes place via proton transfer toward the distal His and hydride transfer toward the oxoferryl oxygen (H(+)/H(-) scheme) and some authors have related it to singlet oxygen generation. Here, we consider the possible reaction schemes and qualitatively analyze the electronic state of the species involved to show that the commonly used association of the H(+)/H(-) scheme with singlet oxygen production is not justified. The analysis is complemented with density functional theory (DFT) calculations for a gas-phase active site model of the reactants and products.  相似文献

Reactions of the acetylene radical cation (C2H2(+*)) with H2O were investigated using ion mobility mass spectrometry. The primary products are the C2H3O(+) and C2H4O(+*) ions, produced with an overall rate coefficient k(300 K) = 2(+/-0.6) x 10(-11) cm(3) s(-1) that increases with decreasing temperature. The C2H4O(+*) (adduct) vs C2H3O(+) (H loss) ratio also increases with decreasing temperature, and with increasing third-body pressure. Ab initio calculations on the products showed seven stable C2H3O(+) isomers and eleven stable C2H4O(+*) isomers. In the C2H4O(+*) adduct channel, the reactivity and energetics suggest that the adduct is the H2C=CHOH(+*) (vinyl alcohol) ion. In the C2H3O(+) channel, the H loss occurs exclusively from water. The C2H3O(+) product ion undergoes slow deprotonation by water to form H(+)(H2O)n clusters. The reactivity, combined with energetics, suggests that the protonated ketene CH2COH(+) is the most likely observed C2H3O(+) ion probably with some contribution from the cyclic c-CH2CHO(+) ion.  相似文献

It has long been assumed that ionizing neutral acetonitrile produces ions with the same atomic connectivity, CH(3)CN(+*). Recent calculations on the C(2)H(3)N(+*) potential energy surface have suggested that it may be difficult to generate pure CH(3)CN(+*) when ionizing acetonitrile. We have probed the interconversion of CH(3)CN(+*) and its lower energy isomer CH(2)CNH(+*) by calculation, collision-induced dissociation mass spectrometry and ion-molecule reaction. The latter ion, ionized ketenimine, is co-generated upon electron or chemical ionization of neutral acetonitrile in the ion source of a mass spectrometer. An estimate of the ratio of the two isomers can be obtained from their respective ion-molecule reactions with CO(2) or COS. CH(3)CN(+*) reacts by proton-transfer with CO(2) and charge transfer with COS, whereas CH(2)CNH(+*) is unreactive.  相似文献

Porphyrin derivatives having a galactose or a bis(isopropylidene)galactose structural unit, linked by ester or ether bonds, were characterized by electrospray tandem mass spectrometry (ES-MS/MS). The electrospray mass spectra of these glycoporphyrins show the corresponding [M + H](+) ions. For the glycoporphyrins with pyridyl substituents and those having a tetrafluorophenyl spacer, the doubly charged ions [M + 2H](2+) were also observed in ES-MS with high relative abundance. The fragmentation of both [M + H](+) and [M + 2H](2+) ions exhibited common fragmentation pathways for porphyrins with the same sugar residue, independently of the porphyrin structural unit and type of linkage. ES-MS/MS of the [M + H](+) ions of the galactose-substituted porphyrins gave the fragment ions [M + H - C(2)H(4)O(2)](+), [M + H - C(3)H(6)O(3)](+), [M + H - C(4)H(8)O(4)](+) and [M + H - galactose residue](+). The fragmentation of the [M + 2H](2+) ions of the porphyrins with galactose shows the common doubly charged fragment ions [porphyrin + H](2+), [M + 2H - C(2)H(4)O(2)](2+), [M + 2H - C(4)H(8)O(4)](2+), [M + 2H - galactose residue](2+) and the singly charged fragment ions [M + H - C(3)H(6)O(3)](+) and [M + H - galactose residue](+). The fragmentation of the [M + H](+) ions of glycoporphyrins with a protected galactosyl residue leads mainly to the ions [M + H - CO(CH(3))(2)](+), [M + H - 2CO(CH(3))(2)](+), [M + H - 2CO(CH(3))(2) - CO](+), [M + H - C(10)H(16)O(4)](+) and [M + H - protected galactose](+). The doubly charged ions [M + 2H](2+) fragment to give the doubly charged ions [porphyrin + H](2+) and the singly charged ions [M + H - protected galactose residue](+) and [M + H - CO(CH(3))(2)](+). For the porphyrins where the sugar structural unit is linked by an ester bond, [M + 2H](2+), ES-MS/MS showed a major and typical fragmentation corresponding to combined loss of a sugar structural unit and further loss of water, leading to the ion [M + 2H - sugar residue - H(2)O](2+), independently of the structure of the sugar structural unit. These results show that ES-MS/MS can be a powerful tool for the characterization of the sugar structural unit of glycoporphyrins, without the need for chemical hydrolysis.  相似文献

This study presents a novel, simple and rapid procedure for isomer differentiation by combining gas chromatography (GC), a selective self-ion/molecule reaction (SSIMR) and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) in an ion trap mass spectrometer (ITMS). SSIMR product ions were produced from four isomers. For aniline, SSIMR induces the formation of the molecular ion, [M+H](+), [M+CH](+), adduct ions of fragments ([M+F](+), where F represents fragment ions) and [2M-H](+). 2 and 3-Picoline produce [M+H](+), [2M-H](+) and [M+F](+), while 5-hexynenitrile produces [M+H](+), [M+F](+) and [2M+H](+) ions. The proposed method provides a relatively easy, rapid and efficient means of isomer differentiation via a SSIMR in the ITMS. Typically, isomer differentiation can be achieved within several minutes. The superiority of the SSIMR technique for isomer differentiation over electronic ionization (EI) is also demonstrated.  相似文献

Several chromanol drug substance candidates exhibit unconventional behavior under the soft ionization conditions of fast atom bombardment and electrospray ionization in the mass spectrometer. Under FAB, these compounds produce radical cation molecular ions rather than protonated molecular ions. Similarly, under acidic mobile phase conditions in an electrospray LC-MS experiment, they produce radial cation molecular ions. Upon changing to a neutral, ammonium acetate-containing mobile phase, the molecular ion species is an ammonium adduct. The two example compounds behave conventionally under negative ion detection, both being free carboxylic acids and forming abundant [M - H](-). Examination of structural analogs indicates that the chromanol, methoxyl and chroman compounds behave this way. Oxidation to a chromanone causes formation of a conventional [M + H](+). Oxidation to a chromene produces even more complex behavior-namely a mixture of [M - H](+), M(+') and [M + H](+). We propose that, for these compounds, elimination of a valence electron to form the radical cation is the more energetically favored reaction than attachment of a proton.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the dissociation patterns, and in particular the relative abundance of [b(3) + 17 + Cat](+), for peptides with C-termini designed to allow transfer of the -OH required to generate the product ion, but not necessarily as the most favored pathway. Working with the hypothesis that formation of a five-membered ring intermediate, including intramolecular nucleophilic attack by a carbonyl oxygen atom, is an important mechanistic step, several model peptides with general sequence AcFGGX were synthesized, metal cationized by electrospray ionization and subjected to collision-induced dissociation (CID). The amino acid at position X was one that either required a larger ring intermediate (beta-alanine, gamma-aminobutyric acid and epsilon-amino-n-caproic acid to generate six-, seven- or nine- membered rings, respectively) to transfer -OH, lacked a structural element required for nucleophilic attack (aminoethanol) or prohibited cyclization because of the inclusion of a rigid ring (p- and m-aminobenzoic acid). For Ag(+), Li(+) and Na(+) cationized peptides, our results show that amino acids requiring the adoption of larger ring intermediates suppressed the formation of [b(3) + 17 + Cat](+), while amino acids that prohibit cyclization eliminated the reaction pathway completely. Formation of [b(3) - 1 + Cat](+) from the alkali metal cationized versions was not a favorable process upon suppression or elimination of the [b(3) + 17 + Cat](+) pathway: the loss of H(2)O to form [M - H(2)O + Cat](+) was instead the dominant dissociation reaction observed. Multiple-stage dissociation experiments suggest that [M - H(2)O + Cat](+) is not [b(4) - 1 + Cat](+) arising from the loss of H(2)O from the C-terminus, but may instead be a species that forms via a mechanism involving the elimination of an oxygen atom from an amide group.  相似文献

The influence of different eluents in positive and negative ion mode thermospray liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry was studied with several groups of pesticides, including carbamates, chlorotriazines, phenylureas, phenoxy acids and organophosphorus and quaternary ammonium compounds, and the corresponding degradation products. Using the positive ion mode in combination with reversed-phase eluents the base peaks generally corresponded either to [M + H]+ for the chlorotriazines and their hydroxy metabolites or to [M + NH4]+ for the carbamates, the phenylureas, the organophosphorus pesticides and their oxygen analogues. In the negative ion mode different processes such as (dissociative) electron-capture and anion attachment mechanisms occurred. Fragment ions such as [M - CONHCH3]- for the carbamates, [M - H]- for the chlorotriazines, phenylureas and chlorinated phenoxy acids and [M].-, [M - R]- (R being a methyl or ethyl group) for organophosphorus pesticides were usually formed. Depending on the eluent additive used (ammonium acetate, ammonium formate and/or chloroacetonitrile), three different adduct ions were formed: [M + CH3COO]-, [M + HCOO]- and [M + Cl]-. Normal-phase eluents with cyclohexane, n-hexane and/or dichloromethane provided more structural information and enhanced the response of several compounds. The positive ion mode was useful for the detection of chlorinated phenoxy acids and chlorophenols which could not be detected in the positive ion mode using reversed-phase systems. The base peaks generally corresponded to [M].+, [M + H]+ or [M - Cl]+. For the characterization of difenzoquat, a quaternary ammonium pesticide of which trace level analysis is troublesome, a post-column ion-pair extraction system was used. An aqueous mobile phase with a sulphonate-type counter ion was applied and an extraction solvent containing cyclohexane-dichloromethane-n-butanol (45:45:10) was used in thermospray liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Illustrative examples of the determination of residue levels of pesticides in soil matrices are shown.  相似文献
