In a thin film-substrate system in-plane compressive stress is commonly generated in the film due to thermal mismatch in operation or fabrication process. If the stress exceeds a critical value, part of the film may buckle out of plane along the defective interface. After buckling delamination, the interface crack at the ends may propagate. In the whole process, the compliance of the substrate compared with the film plays an important role. In this work, we study a circular film subject to compressive stress on an infinitely thick substrate. We study the effects of compliance of the substrate by modeling the system as a plate on an elastic foundation. The critical buckling condition is formulated. The asymptotic solutions of post-buckling deformation and the corresponding energy release rate of the interface crack are obtained with perturbation methods. The results show that the more compliant the substrate is, the easier for the film to buckle and easier for the interface crack to propagate after buckling.  相似文献

The theory of small deformation superimposed on a large deformation of an elastic solid is used to investigate the buckling of anisotropic elastic plate under uniaxial compression. The buckling direction (the direction of buckling wave) is generally not aligned with the compression direction. The equation for determining the buckling direction is obtained. It is found that the out-of-plane buckling of anisotropic elastic plate is possible and both buckling conditions for flexural and extensional modes are presented. As a specific case of buckling of anisotropic elastic plate, the buckling of an orthotropic elastic plate subjected to a compression in a direction that forms an arbitrary angle with an elastic principal axis of the materials is analyzed. It is found that the buckling direction depends on the angle between the compression direction and the principal axis of the materials, the critical compressive force and plate-thickness parameters. In the case that the compression direction is aligned with the principal axis of the materials, the buckling direction will be aligned with the compression one irrespective of critical compressive force and plate-thickness. The buckling modes of a homogeneously compressed elastic plate on a soft elastic substrate are studied. The critical compression is uniquely determined by the bifurcation equation, but this compression is associated with a wide set of buckling modes. It was proved that any solution of the Helmholtz equation satisfies the bifurcation equation. At the same time, in microelectronics, it is required to know which buckling mode is realized. Experimental and theoretical investigations show that the chessboard-like buckling mode should be expected. In what follows, this problem is discussed theoretically. The expected buckling mode can be found by analyzing the energy of the initial postcritical deformation, and the desired mode is determined from the condition of its minimum. The analytic expression of this energy is obtained. Its minimization results in the chessboard-like buckling mode.  相似文献

The theoretical solutions of eigenfrequencies and vibration modes of a rectangular thin plate on an elastic foundation with completely free boundary are derived by using a double finite cosine integral transform method. In the analysis procedure, the elastic foundation is regarded as a Winkler elastic foundation model. Because the basic dynamic elasticity equations of the thin plate on elastic foundation are only used, it is not needed to select the deformation function arbitrarily. Therefore, the solution developed in the present paper is more reasonable and more accurate. To prove the correctness of the solutions, numerical results obtained using the present solutions are compared with those in the literatures.  相似文献

We study the elastic stability of infinite inhomogeneous thin plates on an elastic foundation under in-plane compression. The elastic stiffness constants depend on the coordinate variable in the thickness direction of the plate. The elastic foundation is represented as a Winkler-type model characterized by linear and nonlinear spring constants. First we derive the Föppl–von Kármán equations by taking variations of the elastic strain energy. Next we develop the linear stability analysis of the plate under uniform in-plane compression and explicitly derive the critical loads and wave numbers for particular three cases. The effects of the material inhomogeneity, material orthotropy and loading orthotropy on the critical states are examined independently. Finally, we perform a weakly nonlinear analysis of the plate at the onset of the buckling instability. With the multiple scales method, the amplitude equations for the unstable modes that provide insight into the mode type and its amplitude are derived and then the effect of the material inhomogeneity on buckling modes are evaluated qualitatively.  相似文献

This paper presents a theoretical study of the elastic instability of a uniformly compressed, thin, circular annular plate with axisymmetric initial deflection. The dynamic version of the nonlinear Marguerre plate theory is used, and the linear free vibration problems around the axisymmetric finite deformation of the plate are solved by a finite difference method. By examining the frequency spectrum with various asymmetric modes, the critical compressive load under which the axisymmetric additional deformation of the plate becomes unstable due to the bifurcation buckling is determined, which is found to depend severely on the magnitude of the axisymmetric initial deflection.  相似文献

Out-of-plane buckling of anisotropic elastic plate subjected to a simple shear is investigated. From exact 3-D equilibrium conditions of anisotropic elastic body with a plane of elastic symmetry at critical configuration, the eqution for buckling direction (buckling wave direction) parameter is derived and the shape functions of possible buckling modes are obtained. The traction free boundary conditions which must hold on the upper and lower surfaces of plate lead to a linear eigenvalue problem whose nontrivial solutions are just the possible buckling modes for the plate. The buckling conditions for both flexural and barreling modes are presented. As a particular example of buckling of anisotropic elastic plate, the buckling of an orthotropic elastic plate, which is subjected to simple shear along a direction making an arbitrary angle of θ with respect to an elastic principal axis of materials, is analyzed. The buckling direction varies with θ and the critical amount of shear. The numerical results show that only the flexural mode can indeed exist. An improved analytical model is presented to analyze the delamination buckling of a bi-layer beam-column with a through-the-width delamination. Both the transverse shear deformation and local delamination tip deformations are taken into consideration, and two delaminated sub-layers as well as two substrates in the intact (un-delaminated) regions are modeled as individual Timoshenko beams. A deformable interface is introduced to establish the continuity condition between the two substrates in the intact regions. Consequently, a flexible joint is formed at the delamination tip, and it is different from the conventional rigid joint given in most of studies in the literature, in which the local delamination tip deformations are completely ignored. In contrast to the local delamination buckling in our previous study (Qiao et al., 2010), the present model accounts for the global deformations of the intact region in the delaminated composite beam-column, thus capable of capturing the buckling mode shape transitions from the global, to global–local coexistent, and to local buckling for asymmetric delamination as the interface delamination increases. Good agreement of the present analytical solutions with the full 2-D elastic finite element analysis demonstrates the local deformation effects around the delamination tip and verifies the accuracy of the present model. Parametric studies are conducted to investigate the effects of loading eccentricity, delaminated sub-layer thickness ratio, and interface compliance on the critical buckling load for the delaminated composite beam-column. Transitions of buckling modes from the global to local delamination buckling are also disclosed as the thickness of one sub-layer reduces from the thick sub-layer to a thin film. The developed delamination buckling solution facilitates the design analysis and optimization of laminated composite structures, and it can be used with confidence in buckling analysis of delaminated composite structures.  相似文献

The buckling and post-buckling of clamped circular plate subjected to distributed radial compressed load is presented by using the high-order perturbation analysis and shooting method. The sixth-order solution shows good agreement with the FEM results in [11]. The results in this paper are applied to investigate the buckling and growth of pressed thin film delamination in the film/substrate system. Under a certain residual pressure in the thin film, two characteristic blister radiiR c andR g, the critical radius and growing radius respectively, are obtained. The numerical result shows that the growth criterion of delamination in [9,10] is not perfect. In variant residual stress or interface toughness, the conditions of no growth, stable growth and unstable growth of the delamination are obtained by comparing the driving force at the interface crack tip with the interface toughness. This project is supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China.  相似文献

In this research work, an exact analytical solution for buckling of functionally graded rectangular plates subjected to non-uniformly distributed in-plane loading acting on two opposite simply supported edges is developed. It is assumed that the plate rests on two-parameter elastic foundation and its material properties vary through the thickness of the plate as a power function. The neutral surface position for such plate is determined, and the classical plate theory based on exact neutral surface position is employed to derive the governing stability equations. Considering Levy-type solution, the buckling equation reduces to an ordinary differential equation with variable coefficients. An exact analytical solution is obtained for this equation in the form of power series using the method of Frobenius. By considering sufficient terms in power series, the critical buckling load of functionally graded plate with different boundary conditions is determined. The accuracy of presented results is verified by appropriate convergence study, and the results are checked with those available in related literature. Furthermore, the effects of power of functionally graded material, aspect ratio, foundation stiffness coefficients and in-plane loading configuration together with different combinations of boundary conditions on the critical buckling load of functionally graded rectangular thin plate are studied.  相似文献

This paper studies a three-dimensional buckling delamination problem for a rectangular plate made from elastic and viscoelastic composite material. It is assumed that the plate contains a rectangular band-crack (Case 1) and a rectangular edge-crack (Case 2) and that the edge-surfaces of these cracks have an initial infinitesimal imperfection. The evolution of this initial imperfection with an external compressive loading, acting along the crack (for an elastic composite) or with duration of time (for a viscoelastic composite under fixed external loading) is investigated within the framework of three-dimensional geometrically non-linear field equations of the theory of the viscoelasticity for anisotropic bodies. To determine the values of the critical force or critical time as well as the buckling delamination mode, the initial imperfection criterion is used. The corresponding boundary-value problems are solved by employing boundary form perturbation techniques, Laplace transform and FEM (Finite Element Method). The influence of the materials and/or the geometrical parameters of the plate on the critical values are discussed. In particular, it is established that for the considered change range of the problem parameters, the buckling form depends only on the initial infinitesimal imperfection mode of the crack edges.  相似文献

Nonlinear buckling of elastic thin films on compliant substrates is studied by modeling and simulations to reveal the roles of pre-strain, elastic modulus ratio, and interfacial properties in morphological transition from wrinkles to buckle-delamination blisters. The model integrates an interfacial cohesive zone model with the Föppl–von Kármán plate theory and Green function method within the general framework of energy minimization. A kinetics approach is developed for numerical simulations. Subject to a uniaxial pre-strain, the numerical simulations confirm the analytically predicted critical conditions for onset of wrinkling and wrinkle-induced delamination, with which a phase diagram is constructed. It is found that, with increasing pre-strain, the equilibrium configuration evolves from flat to wrinkles, to concomitant wrinkles and buckle-delamination, and to an array of parallel straight blisters. The height and width of the buckle-delamination blisters can be approximately described by a set of scaling laws with respect to the pre-strain and interfacial toughness. Subject to an equi-biaxial pre-strain, the critical conditions are determined numerically to construct a similar phase diagram for the buckling modes. Moreover, by varying the pre-strain, modulus ratio, and interfacial toughness, a rich variety of equilibrium configurations are simulated, including straight blisters, and network blisters with or without wrinkles. These results provide considerable insight into diverse surface patterns in layered material systems as a result of the mechanical interactions between the film and the substrate through their interface, which suggests potential control parameters for designing specific surface patterns.  相似文献

The wrinkling of a stiff thin film bonded on a soft elastic layer and subjected to an applied or residual compressive stress is investigated in the present paper. A three-dimensional theoretical model is presented to predict the buckling and postbuckling behavior of the film. We obtained the analytical solutions for the critical buckling condition and the postbuckling morphology of the film. The effects of the thicknesses and elastic properties of the film and the soft layer on the characteristic wrinkling wavelength are examined. It is found that the critical wrinkling condition of the thin film is sensitive to the compressibility and thickness of the soft layer, and its wrinkling amplitude depends on the magnitude of the applied or residual in-plane stress. The bonding condition between the soft layer and the rigid substrate has a considerable influence on the buckling of the thin film, and the relative sliding at the interface tends to destabilize the system.  相似文献

A solution for buckling of a stiff strip of finite width bonded to a compliant elastic half-space and subjected to uniform axial compression is presented. Approximate semi-analytical and finite element solutions are obtained and compared with a two-dimensional case of a plate on elastic foundation. The comparison demonstrates that the two-dimensional solution can be applied to predict the buckling wavelength and critical compressive strain when the width of the strip is equal to or larger than the buckling wavelength. For narrow strips, the wavelength is smaller and critical strain is higher than that of a plate on foundation.  相似文献

We study the onset of delamination blisters in a growing elastic sheet adhered to a flat stiff substrate. When the ends of the sheet are kept fixed, its growth causes residual stresses that lead to delamination. This instability can be viewed as a discontinuous buckling between the complete adhered solution and the buckled solution. We provide an analytic expression for the critical deformation at which the instability occurs. We show that the critical threshold scales with a single dimensionless parameter that comprises information from the geometry of the sheet, the mechanical parameters of material and the adhesive features of the substrate.  相似文献
