Linear matroid parity generalizes matroid intersection and graph matching (and hence network flow, degree-constrained subgraphs, etc.). A polynomial algorithm was given by Lovász. This paper presents an algorithm that uses timeO(mn 3), wherem is the number of elements andn is the rank. (The time isO(mn 2.5) using fast matrix multiplication; both bounds assume the uniform cost model). For graphic matroids the time isO(mn 2). The algorithm is based on the method of augmenting paths used in the algorithms for all subcases of the problem. First author was supported in part by the National Science Foundation under grants MCS 78-18909, MCS-8302648, and DCR-8511991. We present a parallel algorithm for finding the convex hull of a sorted set of points in the plane. Our algorithm runs inO(logn/log logn) time usingO(n log logn/logn) processors in theCommon crcw pram computational model, which is shown to be time and cost optimal. The algorithm is based onn 1/3 divide-and-conquer and uses a simple pointer-based data structure.Part of this work was done when the last three authors were at the Department of Computer and Information Science, Linköping University. In the Connected Red–Blue Dominating Set problem we are given a graph G whose vertex set is partitioned into two parts R and B (red and blue vertices), and we are asked to find a connected subgraph induced by a subset S of B such that each red vertex of G is adjacent to some vertex in S. The problem can be solved in O?(2n−|B|) time by reduction to the Weighted Steiner Tree problem. Combining exhaustive enumeration when |B| is small with the Weighted Steiner Tree approach when |B| is large, solves the problem in O?(n1.4143). In this paper we present a first non-trivial exact algorithm whose running time is in O?(n1.3645). We use our algorithm to solve the Connected Dominating Set problem in O?(n1.8619). This improves the current best known algorithm, which used sophisticated run-time analysis via the measure and conquer technique to solve the problem in O?(n1.8966).  相似文献

We present a new algorithm for the Hitchcock transportation problem. On instances with n sources and k sinks, our algorithm has a worst-case running time of O(nk2(logn+klogk)). It closes a gap between algorithms with running time linear in n but exponential in k and a polynomial-time algorithm with running time O(nk2log2n).  相似文献

The quasi-assignment problem can be used to solve the bus scheduling problem, the tourist guide problem, and the minimum number of chains in a partially ordered set. A successive shortest path algorithm for the assignment problem is extended to the quasiassignment problem. We present a deterministic algorithm for computing the convex hull ofn points inE d in optimalO(n logn+n ⌞d/2⌟ ) time. Optimal solutions were previously known only in even dimension and in dimension 3. A by-product of our result is an algorithm for computing the Voronoi diagram ofn points ind-space in optimalO(n logn+n ⌜d/2⌝ ) time. Summary Nested dissection is an algorithm invented by Alan George for preserving sparsity in Gaussian elimination on symmetric positive definite matrices. Nested dissection can be viewed as a recursive divide-and-conquer algorithm on an undirected graph; it usesseparators in the graph, which are small sets of vertices whose removal divides the graph approximately in half. George and Liu gave an implementation of nested dissection that used a heuristic to find separators. Lipton and Tarjan gave an algorithm to findn 1/2-separators in planar graphs and two-dimensional finite element graphs, and Lipton, Rose, and Tarjan used these separators in a modified version of nested dissection, guaranteeing bounds ofO (n logn) on fill andO(n 3/2) on operation count. We analyze the combination of the original George-Liu nested dissection algorithm and the Lipton-Tarjan planar separator algorithm. This combination is interesting because it is easier to implement than the Lipton-Rose-Tarjan version, especially in the framework of existïng sparse matrix software. Using some topological graph theory, we proveO(n logn) fill andO(n 3/2) operation count bounds for planar graphs, twodimensional finite element graphs, graphs of bounded genus, and graphs of bounded degree withn 1/2-separators. For planar and finite element graphs, the leading constant factor is smaller than that in the Lipton-Rose-Tarjan analysis. We propose a parallel algorithm which reduces the problem of computing Hamiltonian cycles in tournaments to the problem of computing Hamiltonian paths. The running time of our algorithm is O(log n) using O(n2/log n) processors on a CRCW PRAM, and O(log n log log n) on an EREW PRAM using O(n2/log n log log n) processors. As a corollary, we obtain a new parallel algorithm for computing Hamiltonian cycles in tournaments. This algorithm can be implemented in time O(log n) using O(n2/log n) processors in the CRCW model and in time O(log2n) with O(n2/log n log log n) processors in the EREW model.  相似文献

A general sorting algorithm, having the well knownO(n 2) algorithmsStraight Insertion Sort andSelection Sort as special cases, is described. This algorithm is analyzed in the case that certain choices in the algorithm are done randomly, and this yields an algorithm that has an average complexity ofO(n 1.5) and a worst case complexity ofO(n 2). However, making random choices (by some random number generator) is time consuming, and a simple quasi-random scheme is therefore implemented. Test runs indicate that also this version has average complexity ofO(n 1.5), and it even seems to perform better than the version using real random choices (even if we disregard the time used for the random choices). This version also needs very little administrative overhead, and it therefore compares favourably to many other sorting algorithms for small and medium sized arrays.  相似文献

The following problem is considered. Givenm+1 points {x i }0 m inR n which generate anm-dimensional linear manifold, construct for this manifold a maximally linearly independent basis that consists of vectors of the formx i x j . This problem is present in, e.g., stable variants of the secant and interpolation methods, where it is required to approximate the Jacobian matrixf′ of a nonlinear mappingf by using values off computed atm+1 points. In this case, it is also desirable to have a combination of finite differences with maximal linear independence. As a natural measure of linear independence, we consider the hadamard condition number which is minimized to find an optimal combination ofm pairs {x i ,x j }. We show that the problem is not NP-hard, but can be reduced to the minimum spanning tree problem, which is solved by the greedy algorithm inO(m 2) time. The complexity of this reduction is equivalent to onem×n matrix-matrix multiplication, and according to the Coppersmith-Winograd estimate, is belowO(n 2.376) form=n. Applications of the algorithm to interpolation methods are discussed. We present an algorithm for finding an optimal location with respect to the Lorenz equity measure on a weighted tree. The algorithm complexity, O(n3log n), substantially improves a previous algorithm for the same problem. Discussion of the behavior of the optimal location shows the sensitivity and intricate nature of this measure, which may result in an unexpected optimal location under extreme conditions. A parallel algorithm for depth-first searching of a directed acyclic graph (DAG) on a shared memory model of a SIMD computer is proposed. The algorithm uses two parallel tree traversal algorithms, one for the preorder traversal and the other for therpostorder traversal of an ordered tree. Each of these traversal algorithms has a time complexity ofO(logn) whenO(n) processors are used,n being the number of vertices in the tree. In this paper, Tseng and Lee's parallel algorithm to solve the stable marriage prolem is analyzed. It is shown that the average number of parallel proposals of the algorithm is of ordern by usingn processors on a CREW PRAM, where each parallel proposal requiresO(loglog(n) time on CREW PRAM by applying the parallel selection algorithms of Valiant or Shiloach and Vishkin. Therefore, our parallel algorithm requiresO(nloglog(n)) time. The speed-up achieved is log(n)/loglog(n) since the average number of proposals required by applying McVitie and Wilson's algorithm to solve the stable marriage problem isO(nlog(n)).  相似文献

We present a polynomial algorithm with time complexity O(n 5) and approximation ratio 4/3 (plus some additive constant) for the minimum 2-peripatetic salesman problem in a complete n-vertex graph with different weight functions valued 1 and 2 (abbreviated to as 2-PSP(1, 2)-min-2w). This paper presents a polynomial-time dual simplex algorithm for the generalized circulation problem. An efficient implementation of this algorithm is given that has a worst-case running time of O(m 2(m+nlogn)logB), where n is the number of nodes, m is the number of arcs and B is the largest integer used to represent the rational gain factors and integral capacities in the network. This running time is as fast as the running time of any combinatorial algorithm that has been proposed thus far for solving the generalized circulation problem. Recently, É. Tardos gave a strongly polynomial algorithm for the minimum-cost circulation problem and solved the open problem posed in 1972 by J. Edmonds and R.M. Karp. Her algorithm runs in O(m 2 T(m, n) logm) time, wherem is the number of arcs,n is the number of vertices, andT(m, n) is the time required for solving a maximum flow problem in a network withm arcs andn vertices. In the present paper, taking an approach that is a dual of Tardos's, we also give a strongly polynomial algorithm for the minimum-cost circulation problem. Our algorithm runs in O(m 2 S(m, n) logm) time and reduces the computational complexity, whereS(m, n) is the time required for solving a shortest path problem with a fixed origin in a network withm arcs,n vertices, and a nonnegative arc length function. The complexity is the same as that of Orlin's algorithm, recently developed by efficiently implementing the Edmonds-Karp scaling algorithm.  相似文献

The QR algorithm is one of the classical methods to compute the eigendecomposition of a matrix. If it is applied on a dense n × n matrix, this algorithm requires O(n3) operations per iteration step. To reduce this complexity for a symmetric matrix to O(n), the original matrix is first reduced to tridiagonal form using orthogonal similarity transformations. In the report (Report TW360, May 2003) a reduction from a symmetric matrix into a similar semiseparable one is described. In this paper a QR algorithm to compute the eigenvalues of semiseparable matrices is designed where each iteration step requires O(n) operations. Hence, combined with the reduction to semiseparable form, the eigenvalues of symmetric matrices can be computed via intermediate semiseparable matrices, instead of tridiagonal ones. The eigenvectors of the intermediate semiseparable matrix will be computed by applying inverse iteration to this matrix. This will be achieved by using an O(n) system solver, for semiseparable matrices. A combination of the previous steps leads to an algorithm for computing the eigenvalue decompositions of semiseparable matrices. Combined with the reduction of a symmetric matrix towards semiseparable form, this algorithm can also be used to calculate the eigenvalue decomposition of symmetric matrices. The presented algorithm has the same order of complexity as the tridiagonal approach, but has larger lower order terms.
