We present the first experimental observation of modulation instability and spontaneous pattern formation with incoherent white light emitted from an incandescent light bulb. We show experimentally that modulation instability of white light propagating in a noninstantaneous self-focusing medium is a collective effect, where the entire temporal spectrum of the light beam becomes unstable at the same threshold value and collectively forms a pattern with a single periodicity. We experimentally demonstrate that the temporal spectrum of the evolving perturbation self-adjusts to match the collective pattern formation phenomenon.  相似文献

We examine the collective mode spectrum for a double quantum-wire system embedded in semi-infinite polar medium, taking account of the role of optical phonons in interaction with the double quantum-wire plasmons and bulk/surface plasmons. The collective mode frequencies are exhibited as functions of qx (wavenumber parallel to the wires) and as functions of z0 (distance of first wire from the interface). We also find that the region of drift instability of the collective modes is split into two disjoint regions of instability by the optical phonons, with a region of stability between them.  相似文献

Some kinds of muscles can oscillate spontaneously,which is related to the dynamic instability of the collective motors.Based on the two-state ratchet model and with consideration of the motor stiffness,the dynamics of collective myosin Ⅱmotors are studied.It is shown that when the motor stiffness is small,the velocity of the collective motors decreases monotonically with load increasing.When the motor stiffness becomes large,dynamic instability appears in the forcevelocity relationship of the collective-motor transport.For a large enough motor stiffness,the zero-velocity point lies in the unstable range of the force-velocity curve,and the motor system becomes unstable before the motion is stopped,so spontaneous oscillations can be generated if the system is elastically coupled to its environment via a spring.The oscillation frequency is related to the motor stiffness,motor binding rate,spring stiffness,and the width of the ATP excitation interval.For a medium motor stiffness,the zero-velocity point lies outside the unstable range of the force-velocity curve,and the motion will be stopped before the instability occurs.  相似文献

Theoretical estimates of electron cyclotron shot noise in gyroklystrons have recently been confirmed at low currents. However at high beam current, the noise temperature is always reduced. We examine the effect of transverse collective effects on the shot noise. There are two collective effects; shielding, which reduces the noise; and instability, which increases it. It is shown that the effect of transverse shielding is negligible unless the gyrotron beam is extremely cold. Regarding instability, if the bare shot noise amplitude is denoted Ξ, then the shot noise, including the effect of instability, can be expressed as Ξ(1+A exp Γ), where Γ is the integrated growth. The effect of instability is then measured by two parameters, Γ and A. For a cold gyrotron beam, A is about 0.3, meaning about 10 dB of power growth is needed for the instability to manifest itself. Thermal effects both reduce A and Γ. For realistic gyrotron beams, about 20-25 dB of power e folds would be necessary for instability to manifest itself. To summarize, the theory developed explains the absence of instability in the measurements, but indicates that phenomena other than transverse shielding are responsible for the noise reduction  相似文献

The instability of an electron beam in cold plasma is considered in the linear potential approximation with different velocity-distribution functions of beam electrons. It is demonstrated that the mechanism of beam instability in plasma changes as the electron-velocity spread is increased: the hydrodynamic single-particle instability mode evolves into the hydrodynamic collective mode or the single-particle kinetic one. Instability growth rates in different modes are determined analytically and numerically.  相似文献

We investigate the modulation instability of multiple four-wave mixing arising from a dual-frequency pump in a single-mode fiber or waveguide. By applying the Floquet theory on account of the periodic nature of four-wave mixing, we reveal a collective type of instability occurring in the anomalous dispersion regime. Our interpretation of the linear stability analysis is validated by the numerical solution of the nonlinear Schr?dinger equation.  相似文献

Stages of plastic shear instability and adiabatic shear failure are associated with the initiation of collective modes of defect ensembles that have a self-similar nature of autosoliton and "blow-up" structures. Experimental and structural studies have confirmed simulation results for the stages of plastic strain localization and adiabatic shear failure based on the constitutive equations that relate structural relaxation and failure mechanisms to the formation of multiscale collective modes in defect ensembles.  相似文献

The problem of the development of instability in a bounded spatial region due to the collective Cherenkov effect or the anomalous Doppler effect is studied in the linear approximation. Threshold conditions for the onset of the convective and absolute instabilities of different longitudinal modes and their growth rates are determined with allowance for reflections from the boundaries of the system. The dispersion relation for the transverse magnetic modes (TMon,) of a partially filled, dielectric-lined, cylindrical waveguide driven by a cold relativistic electron beam is derived. The effect of a gap between the electron beam and the dielectric liner is included. The dispersion relation is then used to calculate the growth rate for the Cerenkov instability in the collective tenuous beam limit. Expressions are developed for the minimum current necessary for oscillation threshold and for the power output of the Cerenkov maser in the collective regime.  相似文献

The effect of carrier drift on the dispersive properties and instability of electromagnetic waves and plasma polaritons in infinite layered periodic semiconductors are considered. It is assumed that in similar semiconductor layers, carriers drift parallel to the interfaces. Drift waves are shown to have a specific band structure of the spectrum. The dispersive properties of collective plasma polaritons under drift are considered, the instability of the polaritons and drift waves is studied, and the instability increments are determined.  相似文献

Electron-electron interactions can induce Fermi surface deformations which break the point-group symmetry of the lattice structure of the system. In the vicinity of such a "Pomeranchuk instability" the Fermi surface is easily deformed by anisotropic perturbations, and exhibits enhanced collective fluctuations. We show that critical Fermi surface fluctuations near a d-wave Pomeranchuk instability in two dimensions lead to large anisotropic decay rates for single-particle excitations, which destroy Fermi-liquid behavior over the whole surface except at the Brillouin zone diagonal.  相似文献

The results of theoretical and experimental studies of collective processes in helical electron beams in gyrotron-type devices are generalized. Main attention is paid to low-frequency oscillations associated with the development of instability in the space charge trapped between the cathode and the magnetic mirror. The mechanism of evolution of instability is substantiated and the effect of oscillations on the main parameters of the electron flow determining its quality is analyzed. Data on the suppression of low-frequency oscillations and resulting enhancement of the gyrotron efficiency are considered.  相似文献

We propose a practical method for distinguishing stochastic and regular subsystems in the entire set of particles for numerical modeling of the development of physical instabilities in collisionless systems with self-consistent fields. The method of subdividing the phase space into subsystems is based on the comparison of the results of two computational experiments with identical initial conditions but different realizations of rounding errors. An example of establishing the spatial and temporal domains of the development of collective instability and determining the instability increments is offered by a gravitating disk.  相似文献

The review of studies of collective beam instabilities in electron-positron storage rings is presented. The processes of excitation and suppression of the longitudinal microwave instability, transverse mode coupling instability, longitudinal and transverse multi-bunch instabilities, and instabilities induced by an interaction of a beam with ions or electron clouds are discussed. Important equations for estimation of the threshold beam currents and the rise time of instabilities, as well as the references to the major original works are given. Vortex-sheet growth is considered. Broken symmetry bifurcations are found in the growth process. The collective elasticity theory for a well-developed vortex sheet is presented, which is similar to that of smectic liquid crystals. The bifurcations in the limit of a much folded vortex sheet correspond to the Helfrich instability in smectics and cholesterics.  相似文献

We study the effect of the mass and charge dynamics on the collective behaviour of a dusty plasma. It is shown that the finite non-zero streaming velocity of the dust grains leads to a novel coupling of the dust mass fluctuation with other dynamic variables of the plasma and the grains. The mass fluctuations causes a collisionless dissipation and provides an alternate channel for the beam mode instability to occur. Physically the negative energy wave associated with the beam mode couples to the mass fluctuation induced dissipative medium to produce the instability. We conclude that the higher value of the ion mass density to the dust mass density ratio reduces the threshold value for the onset of the instability. Its application in the astrophysical context is discussed.  相似文献

The kinetic theory is applied to the nuclear Fermi liquid. The nuclear collective dynamics is treated in terms of the observable variables: particle density, current density, pressure etc. The influence of Fermi-surface distortion, relaxation processes and memory effects on the nuclear dynamics is studied. We show that the presence of the dynamic Fermi-surface distortion gives rise to some important consequences in the nuclear dynamics which are absent in classical liquids. We discuss the nuclear small amplitude excitations, the spinodal instability, the nuclear fission and the bubble instability in heated Fermi-liquid in presence of the memory effects.  相似文献

中国散裂中子源(CSNS)的快循环同步加速器(RCS)是一台强流质子加速器,其束流平均功率达到100 kW。在此强流加速器中,真空部件的阻抗是引起束流不稳定的主要原因,它严重限制了束流强度及品质。对CSNS/RCS设计中的各种真空部件阻抗进行了详细计算,并以计算结果为出发点,理论分析了各种不稳定性强弱,确定了各种不稳定性发生的阻抗阈值,为真空部件结构设计提供了参考。对比较严重的电阻壁阻抗,采用阻抗壁尾场模型进行跟踪模拟,得到不稳定性增长率与理论计算值符合较好。自然色品有助于束流稳定,加入自然色品后模拟,电阻壁不稳定性消失。  相似文献
