A multi-scale pore network model is developed for shale with the process-based method (PBM). The pore network comprises three types of sub-networks: the \(\upmu \)m-scale sub-network, the nm-scale pore sub-network in organic matter (OM) particles and the nm-scale pore sub-network in clay aggregates. Process-based simulations mimic shale-forming geological processes and generate a \(\upmu \)m-scale sub-network which connects interparticle pores, OM particles and clay aggregates. The nm-scale pore sub-networks in OM and clay are extracted from monodisperse sphere packing. Nm-scale throats in OM and clay are simplified to be cylindrical and cuboid-shaped, respectively. The nm-scale pore sub-networks are inserted into selected OM particles and clay aggregates in the \(\upmu \)m-scale sub-network to form an integrated multi-scale pore network. No-slip permeability is evaluated on multi-scale pore networks. Permeability calculations verify that shales permeability keeps decreasing when nm-scale pores and throats replace \(\upmu \)m-scale pores. Soft shales may have higher porosity but similar range of permeability with hard shales. Small compaction leads to higher permeability when nm-scale pores dominate a pore network. Nm-scale pore networks with higher interconnectivity contribute to higher permeability. Under constant shale porosity, the shale matrix with cuboid-shaped nm-scale throats has lower no-slip permeability than that with cylindrical throats. Different from previous reconstruction processes, the new reconstruction process first considers the porous OM and clay distribution with PBM. The influence of geological processes on the multi-scale pore networks is also first analyzed for shale. Moreover, this study considers the effect of OM porosities and different pore morphologies in OM and clay on shale permeability.

Morphological measurements in 3D for pore space characterization (connectivity pore-body/throat classification, shape factors, virtual fluid intrusion) are based on computed intensive digital-thinning operations for skeletonization and medial axis extraction from 3D digital images. We present an alternative method that is measurably faster and allows sub-voxel definition of the pore space network. The method allows extracting—based on morphological considerations only—the centered and shortest stream-lines—i.e., the paths—to follow in order to go through the pore space from one given point to another and to exit. In addition the method penalizes long and narrow pore-throats in favor of short stubby/ones—i.e., it has a built-in exemplification capacity. It exploits well-established mathematical methods successfully applied in medical endoscopy.

Shale samples consist of two major components: organic matter (OM) and inorganic mineral component (iOM). Each component has its distinct pore network topology and morphology, which necessitates generating a model capable of distinguishing the two media. We constructed an object-based model using the OM and iOM composition of shale samples. In the model, we integrated information such as OM population and size distribution, as well as its associated pore-size distribution. For the iOM part, we used mineralogy and pore-size information derived from X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and nitrogen sorption measurements. Our proposed model results in millimeter-scale 2D realizations of shale samples by honoring OM and mineral types, their compositions, shapes, and size distributions. The model can capture heterogeneities smaller than 1 mm. We studied the effects of different gas flow processes and found that Knudsen diffusion and gas slippage dominate the flow, but surface diffusion has little impact on total gas flow.

Permeability is the most important parameter that describes gas flow characteristics in shale. Water saturation and effective pressure have a considerable effect on shale permeability. This paper presents the results of a laboratory study of the effects of water saturation and effective pressure on gas permeability in Carboniferous shales of the Qaidam Basin, China. The permeability of shale samples with varying water saturation (0–33 wt%) was measured at effective pressure of 6.9 to 27.59 MPa and at low mean pore pressure (<?6.89 MPa) at room temperature, using a pressure pulse decay permeameter. The results indicate that the water saturation and the effective pressure are the main factors affecting the shale permeability. Permeability of sample C034, which has a high clay content and is dominated by nanoscale slit-shaped pores, shows a large decrease (up to 90%) with increasing water saturation (from 0 to 31.7 wt%), depending on the effective pressure. A much larger permeability reduction with increasing water saturation fraction is associated with the swelling of clay minerals. For each sample with varying water saturation, our analyses revealed a consistent line relationship between log permeability and effective pressure variation. The impact of effective pressure on the measured permeability becomes more significant as water saturation increases. With increasing water saturation, the gas slippage factor decreases and calculated effective pore size increases, and gas–water flow in the shale samples occurs as channel flow. This study provides practical information for further studies of stress-dependent permeability of shale with water and the gas slippage effect in two-phase, gas–water flow.

A large amount of nano-pores exists in pore clusters in shale gas reservoirs. In addition to the multiple transport regimes that occur on the nanoscale, the pore space is another major factor that significantly affects the shale gas recoverability. An investigation of the pore-scale shale gas flow is therefore important, and the results can be used to develop an effective cluster-scale pore network model for the convenient examination of the process efficiency. Focused ion beam scanning electron microscope imaging, which enables the acquisition of nanometre-resolution images that facilitate nano-pore identification, was used in conjunction with a high-precision pore network extraction algorithm to generate the equivalent pore network for the simulation of Darcy and shale gas flows through the pores. The characteristic parameters of the pores and the gas transport features were determined and analysed to obtain a deeper understanding of shale gas flow through nanoscale pore clusters, such as the importance of the throat flux–radius distribution and the variation of the tortuosity with pressure. The best parameter scheme for the proposed effective model of shale gas flow was selected out of three derived schemes based on the pore-scale prediction results. The model is applicable to pore-scale to cluster-scale shale gas flows and can be used to avoid the multiple-solution problems in the study of gas flows. It affords a foundation for further study to develop models for shale gas flows on larger scales.

This paper proposes the application of capillary and chain random models of pore space structure for determination of limit pore diameter distributions of porous materials, based on the mercury intrusion curves. Both distributions determine the range in which the pore diameter distribution of the investigated material occurs and defines the degree of inaccuracy of the method based on the mercury intrusion data caused by the indeterminacy of the sample shape and its pore space architecture. We derived equations describing the quasi-static process of mercury intrusion into the porous layer and porous ball with a random chain pore space structure and analysed the influence of the model parameters on the mercury intrusion curves. It was shown that the distribution of link length in the chain model of the pore space, random location of chain capillaries in the sample and the length distribution of the capillaries do not influence significantly the intrusion process. Therefore, a simple model of the mercury intrusion into the layer is proposed in which chain links of the pore space have random diameters and constant length. This model is used as a basic model of the intrusion process into a sample of any shape and size and with homogeneous and isotropic chain pore space architecture. The thickness of the layer then represents the mean length of chain capillaries in the sample. It was also proved that the capillary and chain models of pore space architecture are limit models of the network model identified in this paper with the pore architecture of the investigated sample. This justifies the application of both models for determination of limit cumulative distributions of pore diameters in porous materials based on the mercury intrusion data.

The porochemoelectroelastic analytical models have been used to describe the response of chemically active and electrically charged saturated porous media such as clay soils, shales, and biological tissues. In this work, the porochemoelectroelastic theory is applied to derive the solution for stress, pore pressure, strain, and displacement of the Mandel's problem for orthotropic charged saturated porous media. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate applications of the present solutions to laboratory characterization and hydraulic fracturing analysis of shale formation. The analysis shows that ignoring either the porochemoelectroelastic effects or the material anisotropy can leads to inaccurate prediction of the pore pressure and effective stress distributions in the shale sample or formations during these processes.

A microstructure-informed meso-scale model for diffusion of foreign species in porous media is proposed. The model is intended for media where the pore geometry data acquired experimentally represent a fraction of total porosity. A cellular complex, with a cell representing the average pore neighbourhood, is used to generate 3D graphs of sites at cell centres and bonds between neighbouring cells. The novel interpretation of pore systems as graphs allows for clear separation between topology (here connectedness) and physics (here diffusion) in the mathematical formulation of transport. Further, it allows for easy introduction of dynamics into the system, i.e., local changes in topology due to other physical mechanisms, such as micro-cracking or blockage of pores. A mapping between microstructure features and graph elements is used for model construction. The mapping is based on data for clays, where the experimentally resolved pore system comprises isolated elongated pores of preferred orientation with a large volume fraction of unresolved pores. Both the resolved and the “hidden” systems are accounted for. The graph geometry is described by a principal length, the cell size in the preferred orientation, and a secondary length, the cell size out of preferred orientation. This is considered as a representation of mineralogical heterogeneity of clays. Analysis on graphs, a specialisation of the discrete exterior calculus, is used to obtain connectivity and diffusivity properties of formed networks. Since the experimental data are not sufficient to determine the principal length, upper and lower limits are determined from the limited information. Effects of the principal cell size between limits and of the secondary cell size are studied. The results are within the range of experimentally measured macroscopic (bulk) diffusivity for the material studied, including anisotropic diffusion coefficients. The variation of calculated diffusivity coefficients with principal and secondary lengths provides an explanation for the variability in experimentally measured coefficients across different clays.

Pore network models (PNMs) offer a computationally efficient way to analyse transport in porous media. Their effectiveness depends on how well they represent the topology and geometry of real pore systems, for example as imaged by X-ray CT. The performance of two popular algorithms, maximum ball and watershed, is evaluated for three porous systems: an idealised medium with known pore throat properties and two rocks with different morphogenesis—carbonate and sandstone. It is demonstrated that while the extracted PNM simulates simple flow (permeability) with acceptable accuracy, their topological and geometric properties are significantly different. This suggests that such PNM may not serve more complex studies, such as reactive/convective transport of contaminants or bacteria, and further research is necessary to improve the interpretation of real pore spaces with networks. Linear topology–geometry relations are derived and presented to stimulate development of more realistic PNM.

Shale can act as an unconventional gas reservoir with low permeability and complex seepage characteristics. Study of the apparent permeability and percolation behavior of shale gas is important in understanding the permeability of shale reservoirs, to evaluate formation damage, to develop gas reservoirs, and to design wells. This study simulated methane percolation at 298.15 K under inlet pressures ranging from 0.2 to 4 MPa and a constant outlet pressure of 0.1 MPa to investigate shale gas percolation behavior and apparent permeability. Five representative shale cores from the Carboniferous Hurleg and Huitoutala formations in the eastern Qaidam Basin, China, were analyzed. Each experiment measured the volume flow rate of methane and the inlet pressure. Pseudopressure approach was used to analyze high-velocity flow in shale samples, and apparent permeability at different pressures was calculated using the traditional method. A nonlinear apparent permeability model that considers diffusion and slippage is established from theory and experimental data fitting, and the shale gas flow characteristics affected by slippage and diffusion are analyzed. The results indicate that the pseudopressure formulation that considers the effect of gas properties on high-velocity flow produces a more accurate linear representation of the experimental data. The apparent gas permeability of shale consists of contributions from Darcy permeability, slippage, and diffusion. The apparent permeability and gas flow behavior in the studied shales strongly depended on pressure. The diffusion contribution increased greatly as pressure decreased from 2 to 0.2 MPa, and the smaller the shale permeability, the greater the relative contribution of diffusion flow. At pressures greater than 2 MPa, slip flow contributes \(\sim \)20% of the total flux, Darcy flow contributes up to 70%, and diffusion makes only a minor contribution. This study provides useful information for future studies of the mechanism of shale gas percolation and the exploration and development of Qaidam Basin shale gas specifically.

Many heavy oil reservoirs contain discontinuous shales which act as barriers or baffles to flow. However, there is a lack of fundamental understanding about how the shale geometrical characteristics affect the reservoir performance, especially during polymer flooding of heavy oils. In this study, a series of polymer injection processes have been performed on five-spot glass micromodels with different shale geometrical characteristics that are initially saturated with the heavy oil. The available geological characteristics from one of the Iranian oilfields were considered for the construction of the flow patterns by using a controlled-laser technology. Oil recoveries as a function of pore volumes of injected fluid were determined from analysis of continuously recorded images during the experiments. We observed a clear bypassing of displacing fluid which results in premature breakthrough of injected fluid due to the shale streaks. Moreover, the results showed a decrease of oil recovery when shales’ orientation, length, spacing, distance of the shale from production well, and density of shales increased. In contrast, an increase of shale discontinuity or distance of the shale streak from the injection well increased oil recovery. The obtained experimental data have also been used for developing and validating a numerical model where good matching performance has been observed between our experimental observations and simulation results. Finally, the role of connate water saturation during polymer flooding in systems containing flow barriers has been illustrated using pore level visualizations. The microscopic observations confirmed that besides the effect of shale streaks as heterogeneity in porous medium, when connate water is present, the trapped water demonstrates another source of disturbance and causes additional perturbations to the displacement interface leading to more irregular fingering patterns especially behind the shale streaks and also causes a reduction of ultimate oil recovery. This study reveals the application of glass micromodel experiments for studying the effects of barriers on oil recovery and flow patterns during EOR processes and also may provide a set of benchmark data for recovery of oil by immiscible polymer flood around discontinuous shales.

Pore network analysis is used to investigate the effects of microscopic parameters of the pore structure such as pore geometry, pore-size distribution, pore space topology and fractal roughness porosity on resistivity index curves of strongly water-wet porous media. The pore structure is represented by a three-dimensional network of lamellar capillary tubes with fractal roughness features along their pore-walls. Oil-water drainage (conventional porous plate method) is simulated with a bond percolation-and-fractal roughness model without trapping of wetting fluid. The resistivity index, saturation exponent and capillary pressure are expressed as approximate functions of the pore network parameters by adopting some simplifying assumptions and using effective medium approximation, universal scaling laws of percolation theory and fractal geometry. Some new phenomenological models of resistivity index curves of porous media are derived. Finally, the eventual changes of resistivity index caused by the permanent entrapment of wetting fluid in the pore network are also studied.Resistivity index and saturation exponent are decreasing functions of the degree of correlation between pore volume and pore size as well as the width of the pore size distribution, whereas they are independent on the mean pore size. At low water saturations, the saturation exponent decreases or increases for pore systems of low or high fractal roughness porosity respectively, and obtains finite values only when the wetting fluid is not trapped in the pore network. The dependence of saturation exponent on water saturation weakens for strong correlation between pore volume and pore size, high network connectivity, medium pore-wall roughness porosity and medium width of the pore size distribution. The resistivity index can be described succesfully by generalized 3-parameter power functions of water saturation where the parameter values are related closely with the geometrical, topological and fractal properties of the pore structure.
