The stress-strain isothermal hysteresis loops due to the incomplete martensitic transformation are analysed for Ti-Ni shape memory alloys. Experiments show the existence of two distinct yield lines for phase transition; one for the forward transformation austenitemartensite (AM), the other for the reverse transformation MA. The tensile behaviour of single crystals with only one yield line (AM) [1] can be considered as an ideal case. An extension of a thermodynamic model for pseudoelasticity [2] allows these two yield lines to be taken into account.
Sommario Per leghe Ti-Ni con memoria di forma vengono analizzati i cicli di isteresi isotermici tensione-deformazione prodotti da una incompleta trasformazione martensitica. Gli esperimenti mostrano l'esistenza di due distinte linee di snervamento per la transizione di fase, una verso la trasformazione austenitemartensite (AM), l'altra per la trasformazione inversa MA. Il comportamento a trazione di un singolo cristallo con una sola linea di snervamento (AM) [1], può essere considerato un caso ideale. L'estensione ad un modello termodinamico pseudo-elastico [2] consente di analizzare queste due linee di snervamento.

Summary The effects of a uniform rotation on the propagation of small perturbations through an anisotropic collisionless plasma are investigated. These effects are present in various ways on the well-known hose, mirror and gravitational instabilities. In Part I we consider plane perturbations, in Part II cylindrical. Some remarks about stability and hydromagnetic waves in an anisotropic collisionless plasma are given in Appendix.

Tali effetti si manifestano in vario modo sui noti fenomeni di instabilità hose, mirror e magnetogravitazionale del tipo di Jeans. Summary Let denote the congruence of null geodesics associated with a given optical observer inV 4. We prove that determines a unique collection of vector fieldsM() ( =1, 2, 3) and (0) overV 4, satisfying a weak version of Killing's conditions.This allows a natural interpretation of these fields as the infinitesimal generators of spatial rotations and temporal translation relative to the given observer. We prove also that the definition of the fieldsM() and (0) is mathematically equivalent to the choice of a distinguished affine parameter f along the curves of, playing the role of a retarded distance from the observer.The relation between f and other possible definitions of distance is discussed.

In a semiinfinite cylinder composed of anisotropic linearised elastic material, loaded on the base and clamped along the lateral surface, it is known that the solution as measured, for example, by the strainenergy flux through a plane crossection decays longitudinally at most exponentially with respect to the axial distance from the base. There is, however, also a transverse radial decay of the solution, again measured for example by the strainenergy, occurring from the region close to the cylinder's axis to the region near the lateral surface, where the energy vanishes.This problem is considered in the present paper which discusses a circular semiinfinite cylinder and derives an estimate for the strainenergy contained in a cylindrical annulus at a given distance from the base and of variable height, and whose outer surface coincides with the lateral surface of the cylinder. It is shown that the strainenergy decays at most algebraically to zero as the inner radius of the annulus increases to that of the cylinder.Sommario. The problem considered in this paper describes the torsion of a homogeneous isotropic elastic layer (0zd 1) of finite thickness d 1, perfectly bonded to another elastic layer (-d 2z0) of finite thickness d 2. The problem is reduced to the solution of a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. The solutions are given for some particular cases.

Summary We study the main periodic solutions of a 4-dimensional symplectic mapping composed of two coupled 2-dimensional mappings. Their bifurcations were calculated numerically and also theoretically for small values of the coupling parameter . Most bifurcating families of period 2n (n0) have complex unstable regions that extend from =0 to the maximum allowed value of for each family. These complex unstable regions do not allow the transmisssion of the stability of the corresponding families to families of higher order. We found only one family with a complex unstable region not extending to the maximum , but in this case also the transmission of the stability is stopped at an inverse bifurcation. Thus although there are infinite sequences of bifurcations (of the Feigenbaum type) in the limiting 2-dimensional case =0, all such sequences are interrupted when the system is 4-dimensional (i.e. for 0). The appearance of complex instability for =0 can be predicted by studying the cases =0 and applying the Krein-Moser theorem.
Sommario Si svolge uuno studio dettagliato delle soluzioni periodiche principali di due mappe simplettiche bidimensionali accoppiate, calcolandone sia analiticamente che numericamente le biforcazioni per piccoli valori del parametro di accoppiamento . Quasi tutte le famiglie di periodo 2n (n0) prodotte dalle biforcazioni presentano regioni di instabilità complessa che si estendono da =0 fino al massimo valore di considerato. Queste regioni di instabilità complessa impediscono il trasferimento della stabilità di una famiglia a famiglie di ordine più elevato. In un solo caso si osserva una famiglia la cui regione di instabilità complessa non arriva ad estendersi fino al valore massimo di ; in questo caso però il trasferimento della stabilità viene interrotto da una biforcazione inversa. Se ne conclude che, nonostante I'esistenza di una famiglia di infinite biforcazioni di tipo Feigenbaum nel caso limite bidimensionale (=0), tutte le sequenze si interrompono se il sistema è a quattro dimensioni. Il formarsi di regioni di instabilità complessa per 0 può essere previsto studiando il caso =0 ed appplicando il teorema di Krein-Moser.

Relation between viscoelasticity and shear-thinning behaviour in liquids   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Summary The shear-thinning behaviour of a liquid is represented in terms of a relaxation time, defined by the ratio 0/G0 of initial viscous and elastic constants. The relationship provides a very simple basis for the evaluation of andG 0 from viscosity/shear data. Results are compared with relaxation times and moduli from primary normal-stress measurement, from stress relaxation and from direct measurement of recoverable shear strain. Good agreement is found but there is experimental evidence the recoverable shear strain e is related to normal stressN 1 and shear stress by e = N1/3, which does not agree with the theoretical prediction of eitherWeissenberg orLodge.
Zusammenfassung Das Scherentzähungsverhalten einer Flüssigkeit wird mittels einer Relaxationszeit beschrieben, die durch das Verhältnis der Anfangswerte von Viskosität und Elastizitätsmodul 0/G0 definiert ist. Diese Beziehung eröffnet eine einfache Methode zur Bestimmung von undG 0 aus Scherviskositätsmessungen. Die damit erhaltenen Ergebnisse werden mit Relaxationszeiten und Moduln verglichen, die durch Messung der ersten Normalspannungsdifferenz, der Spannungsrelaxation und der Scherdehnungsrückstellung (recoverable shear strain) gewonnen worden sind. Es wird eine gute Übereinstimmung gefunden, zugleich aber wird der experimentelle Nachweis geführt, daß die Scherdehnungsrückstellung e mit der ersten NormalspannungsdifferenzN 1 und der Schubspannung durch die Beziehung e = N1/3 verknüpft ist, was sowohl zu der theoretischen Voraussage vonWeissenberg als auch zu derjenigen vonLodge im Widerspruch steht.

Zusammenfassung Das Problem des Wärmeübergangs bei turbulenter Strömung in konzentrischen Ringspalten wird für den dreidimensionalen Fall theoretisch gelöst, wobei die Wandwärmestromdichte sowohl in azimutaler als auch in axialer Richtung beliebig variiert. Die Lösung der Energiegleichung erfolgt mit der klassischen Methode der Superposition und Trennung der Variablen, wobei das dabei auftretende Sturm-Liouvillesche Eigenwertproblem numerisch gelöst wird. Zur Lösung werden Verteilungen für die Geschwindigkeit und anisotropen turbulenten Austauschgrößen verwendet, die mit dem phänomenlogischen Turbulenzmodell von Ramm berechnet wurden. Ergebnisse werden über einen weiten Bereich der Reynolds-Zahl (104 Re 106), der Prandtl-Zahl (0 Pr 100) und für verschiedene Radienverhältnisse diskutiert.
Turbulent forced convection heat transfer in annuli with arbitrarily varying boundary conditions of second kind
The problem of turbulent flow heat transfer in concentric annuli is analysed for the general threedimensional case in which the wall heat flux varies arbitrarily in both the circumferential and axial directions. The energy equation is solved using the classical method of superposition and separating variables, where the resulting Sturm-Liouville problem are evaluated numerically. The solution is based on velocity profiles and anisotropic thermal turbulent transport properties evaluated by Ramm's phenomenological turbulence model. Results are discussed over a wide range of Reynolds number (104 Re 106), Prandtl number (0 Pr 100) and radius ratio.

Summary In a previous research we have shown that the KS-transformation, developed by Kustaanheimo and Stiefel for the regularization of the Kepler problem, may be interpreted as the correspondence which associates to each null 4-vector of the space of Minkowski a one-index spinor, defined up to a phase factor, and we have obtained a new form of the KS-transformation. In the present research we show that this formulation allows a straight derivation of the Hopf fibering of the sphere S3 (characterized by unit spinors) having the base space given by the section (sphere S2) of the light cone, and we show that the KS-transformation allows the quantization of the symplectic manifold S2 in the sense of Souriau. The sphere S3 turns out to be a contact quantized manifold. The bilinear relation characteristic of the KS-theory and the column vectors of the KS-matrix are intimately related to the contact structure.
Sommario In un precedente lavoro si è mostrato che la trasformazione KS, introdotta da Kustaanheimo e Stiefel per regolarizzare il problema di Keplero, è riconducibile alla ben nota corrispondenza fra vettori del cono isotropo dello spazio di Minkowski e spinori semplici, definiti a meno della fase, e si è pervenuti ad una nuova formulazione della KS. Nel presente lavoro si mostra come da tale formulazione scaturisca in modo naturale la fibrazione di Hopf della sfera S3 (caratterizzata dagli spinori unitari) avente quale base una sezione (sfera S2) del cono isotropo e si mette in luce come la trasformazione KS consenta di effettuare la quantizzazione della varietà simplettica S2 nel senso di Souriau e di ottenere la sfera S3 quale varietà quantica di contatto. La relazione bilineare caratteristica della teoria KS ed i vettori colonna della matrice KS risultano intimamente legati alla struttura di contatto.

A solution is obtained for the relationship between load, displacement and inner contact radius for an axisymmetric, spherically concave, rigid punch, indenting an elastic half-space. Analytic approximations are developed for the limiting cases in which the ratio of the inner and outer radii of the annular contact region is respectively small and close to unity. Summary The subject of this article is the thermodynamics of perfect elastic-plastic materials undergoing unidimensional, but not necessarily isothermal, deformations. The first and second laws of thermodynamics are employed in a form in which only the following quantities appear: the temperature , the elastic strain e, the plastic strain p, the elastic modulus (gq), the yield strain (gq), the heat capacity (e, p,), the latent elastic heat e(e, p, ), and the latent plastic heat p(e, p, ). Relations among the response functions , , , e, and p are derived, and it is shown that a set of these relations gives a necessary and sufficient condition for compliance with the laws of thermodynamics. Summary A brief discussion of the constant stretch history concept introduced by Noll, and of the perpetual rheological history concept introduced by Oldroyd, shows that these are essentially equivalent. The physical meaning which is generally attached to the Deborah number implies that its value is zero for constant stretch history flows. These are a more restricted class than all steady flows, and thus a definition of the Deborah number is given, to be used in the analysis of steady flows, which fulfills the requirement of yielding a zero value when applied to a constant stretch history flow pattern.

Summary Dynamic shakedown of discrete elastic-perfectly plastic structures under a specified load history is studied using the dynamic characteristics of the structure provided by modal analysis. Several statical and kinematical theorems are presented, including lower and upper bound theorems for the minimum adaptation time of the structure. In the formulation of the kinematical theorems a crucial role is played by the appropriate definition of admissible plastic strain cycle.
Sommario Si studia il problema dell'adattamento dinamico (shakedown) di una struttura discreta elasto-perfetta-mente plastica e soggetta ad una storia di carichi prestabilita, facendo uso a tale scopo delle caratteristiche dinamiche della struttura fornite dalla analisi modale. Vengono presentati svariati teoremi, sia di tipo statico che cinematico, tra cui taluni teoremi di delimitazione superiore ed inferiore del tempo minimo di adattamento. Nella formulazione dei teoremi cinematici ha un ruolo cruciale la corretta definizione di ciclo deformativo ammissibile.

Summary A probabilistic model of the geometric imperfections of a real structure is proposed, in order to provide a general theory of the stochastic response of structures in presence of small random deviations from the perfect scheme. The main statistical measures of the stochastic response are derived and an application to the study of a particular conservative elastic system is developed.
Sommario Si propone una teoria generale della risposta probabilistica di strutture, in presenza di piccole deviazioni aleatorie dei dati iniziali rispetto allo schema geometrico perfetto. An exact solution is given for the steady flow of a Newtonian fluid occupying the halfspace past the plane z=0 uniformly rotating about a fixed normal axis (Oz). This solution is obtained in a velocity field of the form considered by Berker [2] and can be deduced as a limiting case, as h+, of the solution to the problem relative to the strip 0zh imposing at z=h either the adherence boundary conditions or the free surface conditions. Furthermore, the stability of this flow, subject to periodic disturbances of finite amplitude, is studied using the energy method and the result is compared with those corresponding to stability of flows in the strip 0zh.
Sommario In questa nota si mostra che-oltre alla calssica soluzione di von Karman [1] — esiste, per opportuni valori del gradiente di pressione all'infinito, una soluzione esatta per il moto stazionario di un fluido Newtoniano posto nel semispazio limitato dal piano z=0 uniformemente rotante attorno ad un asse ad esso perpendicolare (Oz). Tale soluzione, ottenuta sulla scia del lavoro di Berker [2], si può dedurre anche come limite, per h+, della soluzione del problema relativo alla striscia 0zh quando sul piano z=h si assegnano o le condizioni di aderenza o le condizioni di frontiera libera. In this paper the flow is studied of an incompressible viscous fluid through a helically coiled annulus, the torsion of its centre line taken into account. It has been shown that the torsion affects the secondary flow and contributes to the azimuthal component of velocity around the centre line. The symmetry of the secondary flow streamlines in the absence of torsion, is destroyed in its presence. Summary A relatively simple example of asymmetric snap-through buckling in a continuous structure is the nonlinear problem of a cantilevered column restrained at its tip by a stiff wire, which is inclined at an acute angle to the column centerline, and loaded at its tip by a force perpendicular to the centerline. A parameter called , which is the nondimensional ratio of the flexural rigidity of the column to the combined extensional stiffness of the wire and the column centerline, determines the essential features of the buckling. If is zero, or is small compared to unity, the bending of the column is small enough to justify the use of linear bending theory for the column. Hence, even though the constraint is nonlinear, the solution to this problem is obtained in closed form. The critical point for the structure is found to be an asymmetric branching point for =0, while for positive, the critical point is a snap-through type. The effect of is similar to that induced by initial imperfections in more complex structures. For very small , the critical load is markedly decreased from the value for =0. Moreover, the graph of the load vs. tip deflection has the appearance of having an acute discontinuity in slope at the critical point for very small, although it is actually found that the graph has a horizontal tangent there.
Sommario Un esempio relativamente semplice di collasso asimmetrico per carico di punta in una struttura continua è il problema non lineare di una colonna incastrata ad una estremità e vincolata all'altra estremità da un filo rigido che forma un angolo acuto con l'asse della colonna e caricata a quella estremità con una forza perpendicolare allo stesso asse. Un parametro chiamato , che è il rapporto adimensionale fra la rigidità flessionale della colonna e la rigidezza longitudinale del filo e dell'asse della colonna, determina le caratteristiche essenziali del cedimento. Se è zero o è piccolo rispetto all'unità, l'inflessione della colonna è sufficientemente piccola per giustificare l'uso della teoria lineare di inflessione per la colonna. Di conseguenza anche se il vincolo non è lineare la soluzione del problema è ottenuta in forma compatta. Il punto critico della struttura si trova nel punto di biforcazione asimmetrica per =0, mentre per positivo, il punto critico rappresenta un punto di collasso. L'effetto di è simile a quello prodotto da imperfezioni iniziali in strutture più complesse. Per molto piccolo il carico critico è notevolmente ridotto rispetto al valore per =0. Inoltre il grafico del carico in funzione della curvatura all'estremità sembra avere una netta discontinuità nella pendenza dal punto di biforcazione per molto piccolo benchè, in realtà si trovi che il grafico ha lì una tangente orizzontale.

The paper presents an exact analysis of the dispersion of a passive contaminant in a viscous fluid flowing in a parallel plate channel driven by a uniform pressure gradient. The channel rotates about an axis perpendicular to its walls with a uniform angular velocity resulting in a secondary flow. Using a generalized dispersion model which is valid for all time, we evaluate the longitudinal dispersion coefficientsK i (i=1, 2, ...) as functions of time. It is shown thatK 1=0 andK 3,K 4, ... decay rapidly in comparison withK 2. ButK 2 decreases with increasing (the dimensionless rotation parameter) for values of upto approximately =2.2. ThereafterK 2 increases with further increase in and its value gets saturated for large values of (say, 500) and does not change any further with increase in . A physical explanation of this anomalous behaviour ofK 2 is given.

Zusammenfassung In dieser Untersuchung wird eine exakte Analyse der Ausbreitung eines passiven Kontaminierungsstoffes in einer zähen Flüssigkeit gegeben, die, befördert durch einen gleichförmigen Druckgradienten, in einem Parallelplattenkanal strömt. Der Kanal rotiert mit gleichförmiger Winkelgeschwindigkeit um eine zu seinen Wänden senkrechte Achse, wodurch sich eine Sekundärströmung ausbildet. Unter Verwendung eines generalisierten, für alle Zeiten gültigen Dispersionsmodells werden die longitudinalen DispersionskoeffizientenK i (i=1, 2, ...) als Funktionen der Zeit ermittelt. Es wird gezeigt, daßK 1=0 gilt und dieK 3,K 4, ... gegenüberK 2 schnell abnehmen.K 2 nimmt ab, wenn , der dimensionslose Rotationsparameter, bis etwa zum Wert 2,2 ansteigt. Danach wächstK 2 mit bis auf einem Endwert an, der etwa ab =500 erreicht wird. Dieses anomale Verhalten vonK 2 findet eine physikalische Erklärung.

Summary As part of a study on the hydrodynamics of a cyclone separator, a theoretical investigation of the flow pattern in a flat box cyclone (vortex chamber) has been carried out. Expressions have been derived for the tangential velocity profile as influenced by internal friction (eddy viscosity) and wall friction. The most important parameter controlling the tangential velocity profile is = –u 0 R/(v+ ), where u 0 is the radial velocity at the outer radius R of the cyclone, the kinematic liquid viscosity and is the kinematic eddy viscosity. For values of greater than about 10 the tangential velocity profile is nearly hyperbolic, for smaller than 1 the tangential velocity even decreases towards the centre. It is shown how and also the wall friction coefficient may be obtained from experimental velocity profiles with the aid of suitable graphs.
