Breaking the molecular symmetry by protonation of germylene 1 is the key step in the synthesis of the germyliumylidene 2 , which is stabilized by an intramolecular interaction with a distant imido group.
Different in water! We have developed Nazarov‐type reactions in water. Different reaction courses compared with those in organic solvents are observed in water. In the presence of a scandium based, surfactant‐type catalyst, water‐trapping products are obtained exclusively. The results presented are unprecedented and provide a valuable extension to information available regarding organic reactions in water.
Silica scaffolding : By employing functionalized mesoporous SBA‐15 silica, novel fluorescent cruciform‐silica hybrid materials are generated which preserve the desirable solution properties of cruciforms in the solid state for potential use in sensory schemes.
Change happens : Acridine–carbon nanotube nanohybrids were built (see figure) and their photoinduced electron‐transfer properties investigated, showing variable behaviour depending on the acridine partner.
Essential oxygen : The title transformation involves two different modes of cyanation, syn and anti cyanopalladation, as the key steps in this catalytic reaction. These processes enable successful dicyanative cyclization of diyne and enyne derivatives (see scheme).
A DNA spin‐off : Electrospinning of DNA complexes gives nanofibers with a highly ordered morphology that allows homogeneous distribution of encapsulated multiple chromophores. The emission color can be controlled by suitable choice of the donor–acceptor pair and the doping ratio. Pure white‐light emission from nanofibers is demonstrated (see picture).
NMR artifact purging: Modern NMR experiments depend on efficient coherence transfer pathways for their sensitivity and on suppression of undesired pathways leading to artifacts for their spectral clarity. A novel robust adiabatic element suppresses hard‐to‐get‐at artifacts (see picture).
Imprinted materials : Monosilylated derivatives of melamine and cyanuric acid are used in the preparation of hybrid silica. The assembly of the melamine and cyanuric acid moieties through molecular recognition properties is the key factor in building a bridged silsesquioxane and an imprinted hybrid silica (see picture).
En route to molecular electronics : As extended, conjugated oligomers are desirable for molecular electronics, their electrical conductance should display a low attenuation factor. Zinc‐complexed oligo(ethynyleneporphyrindiylethynylene)s have been prepared that are distinguished by ultralow attenuation factors in single‐molecule conductance.
Slip between the sheets! The intercalation properties of lamellar solid acids have a profound impact on nitrogen doping as well as on the resultant visible‐light photocatalysis, and the effects depend strongly on the protonic acidities of the samples (see figure).
Time for SOme MOre : For the first time SOMO (singly occupied molecular orbital) activation has been exploited to allow a new approach to the α‐chlorination of aldehydes. This transformation can be readily implemented as part of a linchpin catalysis approach to the enantioselective production of terminal epoxides.
