We consider a magnetic impurity in two different S=1/2 Heisenberg bilayer antiferromagnets at their respective critical interlayer couplings separating Néel and disordered ground states. We calculate the impurity susceptibility using a quantum Monte Carlo method. With intralayer couplings in only one of the layers (Kondo lattice), we observe an anomalous Curie constant C*, as predicted on the basis of field-theoretical work [S. Sachdev, Science 286, 2479 (1999)10.1126/science.286.5449.2479]. The value C* = 0.262 +/- 0.002 is larger than the normal Curie constant C=S(S+1)/3. Our low-temperature results for a symmetric bilayer are consistent with a universal C*.

We present a numerical study of the spin-1/2 bilayer Heisenberg antiferromagnet with random interlayer dimer dilution. From the temperature dependence of the uniform susceptibility and a scaling analysis of the spin correlation length we deduce the ground state phase diagram as a function of nonmagnetic impurity concentration p and bilayer coupling g. At the site percolation threshold, there exists a multicritical point at small but nonzero bilayer coupling g(m)=0.15(3). The magnetic properties of the single-layer material La(2)Cu(1-p)(Zn,Mg)(p)O4 near the percolation threshold appear to be controlled by the proximity to this new quantum critical point.

The S=1/2 Heisenberg bilayer antiferromagnet with randomly removed interlayer dimers is studied using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. A zero-temperature multicritical point (p(*),g(*)) at the classical percolation density p=p(*) and interlayer coupling g(*) approximately equal 0.16 is demonstrated. The quantum critical exponents of the percolating cluster are determined using finite-size scaling. It is argued that the associated finite-temperature quantum critical regime extends to zero interlayer coupling and could be relevant for antiferromagnetic cuprates doped with nonmagnetic impurities.

A quantum critical point of the heavy fermion Ce(Ru(1-x)Rh(x))2Si2, (x = 0,0.03) has been studied by single-crystalline neutron scattering. By accurately measuring the dynamical susceptibility at the antiferromagnetic wave vector k3 = 0.35c*, we have shown that the inverse energy width gamma(k3), i.e., the inverse correlation time, depends on temperature as gamma(k3) = c1 + c2T((3/2)+/-0.1), where c1 and c2 are x dependent constants, in a low temperature range. This critical exponent 3/2 +/- 0.1 proves that the quantum critical point is controlled by that of the itinerant antiferromagnet.

From experimental observations of limiting temperatures in heavy ion collisions we derive the critical temperature of infinite nuclear matter Tc=16.6+/-0.86. Theoretical model correlations between Tc, the compressibility modulus K, the effective mass m*, and the saturation density rho s are then exploited to derive the quantity (K/m*)1/2 rho -1/3 s. This quantity together with calculations employing Skyrme and Gogny interactions indicates a value of K in moderately excited nuclei that is in excellent agreement with the value determined from giant monopole resonance data.

At a generic quantum critical point, the thermal expansion alpha is more singular than the specific heat c(p). Consequently, the "Grüneisen ratio," Gamma=alpha/c(p), diverges. When scaling applies, Gamma approximately T(-1/(nu z)) at the critical pressure p=p(c), providing a means to measure the scaling dimension of the most relevant operator that pressure couples to; in the alternative limit T-->0 and p not equal p(c), Gamma approximately 1/(p-p(c)) with a prefactor that is, up to the molar volume, a simple universal combination of critical exponents. For a magnetic-field driven transition, similar relations hold for the magnetocaloric effect (1/T) partial differential T/ partial differential H|(S). Finally, we determine the corrections to scaling in a class of metallic quantum critical points.

From thermodynamics, local spin density approximation+Hubbard U studies and exact diagonalizations of a five-band Hubbard model on CuO2 stripes we find that Li2ZrCuO4 (Li2CuZrO4 in traditional notation) is close to a ferromagnetic critical point. Analyzing its susceptibility chi(T) and specific heat cp(T,H) within a Heisenberg model, we show that the ratio of the 2nd to the 1st neighbor exchange integrals alpha=-J2/J1 approximately 0.3 is close to the critical value alphac=1/4. Comparing with related chain cuprates we explain the rather strong field dependence of cp, the monotonic downshift of the peak of chi(T), and its increase for alpha-->alphac+0.

Exchange interactions between S=1/2 sites in piperazinium hexachlorodicuprate produce a frustrated bilayer magnet with a singlet ground state. We have determined the field-temperature phase diagram by high field magnetization and neutron scattering experiments. There are two quantum critical points: Hc1=7.5 T separates a quantum paramagnet phase from a three dimensional, antiferromagnetically ordered state while Hc2=37 marks the onset of a fully polarized state. The ordered phase, which we describe as a magnon Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), is embedded in a quantum critical regime with short range correlations. A low temperature anomaly in the BEC phase boundary indicates that additional low energy features of the material become important near Hc1.

The competition between chain formation and phase separation in the Stockmayer fluid (SF) of dipolar particles is analyzed using a renormalized Flory-Huggins model of equilibrium polymerization. Calculated critical properties (T(c), phi(c), Z(c)) for the SF compare favorably with simulations over a wide range of the dimensionless dipolar (or "sticking") energy mu*. We find that the polymerization transition preempts phase separation for a large mu*, i.e., (mu*)2 >22.

For a liquid sample with unrestricted diffusion in a constant magnetic field gradient g, the increase R in R2=1/T2 for CPMG measurements is 1/3(taugammag)2D, where gamma is magnetogyric ratio, tau is the half the echo spacing TE, and D is the diffusion constant. For measurements on samples of porous media with pore fluids and without externally applied gradients there may still be significant pore-scale local inhomogeneous fields due to susceptibility differences, whose contributions to R2 depend on tau. Here, diffusion is not unrestricted nor is the field gradient constant. One class of approaches to this problem is to use an "effective gradient" or some kind of average gradient. Then, R2 is often plotted against tau2, with the effective gradient determined from the slope of some of the early points. In many cases, a replot of R2 against tau instead of tau2 shows a substantial straight-line interval, often including the earliest available points. In earlier work [G.C. Borgia, R.J.S. Brown, P. Fantazzini, Phys. Rev. E 51 (1995) 2104; R.J.S. Brown, P. Fantazzini, Phys. Rev. B 47 (1993) 14823] these features were noted, and attention was called to the fact that very large changes in field and gradient are likely for a small part of the pore fluid over distances very much smaller than pore dimensions. A truncated Cauchy-Lorentz (C-L) distribution of local fields in the pore space was used to explain observations, giving reduced effects of diffusion because of the averaging properties of the C-L distribution, the truncation being at approximately +/-1/2chiB0, where chi is the susceptibility difference. It was also noted that, when there is a narrow range of pore size a, over a range of about 40 of the parameter xi=1/3chinua2/D, where nu is the frequency, R2 does not depend much on pore size a nor on diffusion constant D. Examples are shown where plots of R2 vs tau show better linear fits to the data for small tau values than do plots vs tau2. The present work shows that, if both grain-scale and sample-scale gradients are present for samples with narrow ranges of T2, it may be possible to identify the separate effects with the linear and quadratic coefficients in a second-order polynomial fit to the early data points. Of course, many porous media have wide pore size and T2 distributions and hence wide ranges of xi. For some of these wide distributions we have plotted R2 vs tau for signal percentiles, normalized to total signal for shortest tau, again showing initially linear tau-dependence even when available data do not cover the longest and/or shortest T2 values for alltau values. For the examples presented, both the intercepts and the initial slopes of the plots of R2 vs tau increase systematically with signal percentile, starting at smallest R2.

We report pulse-field magnetization, ac susceptibility, and 100 GHz electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements on the S = 5/2 two-dimensional triangular compound Ba3NbFe3Si2O14 with the Néel temperature T(N) = 26 K. The magnetization curve shows an almost linear increase up to 60 T with no indication of a one-third magnetization plateau. An unusually large frequency dependence of the ac susceptibility in the temperature range of T = 20-100 K reveals a spin-glass behavior or superparamagnetism, signaling the presence of frustration-related slow magnetic fluctuations. The temperature dependence of the ESR linewidth exhibits two distinct critical regimes; (i) ΔH(pp)(T) is proportional to (T-T(N))(-p) with the exponent p = 0.2(1)-0.2(3) for temperatures above 27 K, and (ii) ΔH(pp)(T) is proportional to (T-T*)(-p) with T* = 12 K and p = 0.8(1)-0.8(4) for temperatures between 12 and 27 K. This is interpreted as indicating a dimensional crossover of magnetic interactions and the persistence of short-range correlations with a helically ordered state.

Within the RMF approach, considering the contribution of σ*,φ mesons and baryon octet {n,p,Λ,Σ0+0}, some properties of neutron star matter have been investigated in the temperature region between 5—15MeV. It is found that when the contributions of σ*,φ mesons are included, (1) the critical baryon density decreases (but for the Λ hyperon, the effect is not obvious), but the number of hyperons increases; (2) the equation of state becomes soft at higher energy density; (3) the maximum mass decreases while the corresponding radius increases; (4) the central density, the central energy density, and the central pressure all become smaller. At T=5MeV and 10MeV and for Σ00+, the σ*,φ mesons make critical baryon density greatly decrease; but at T=15MeV, 20MeV, and 25MeV, the effect is not obvious. However, for Λ,Σ hyperons, at all the above temperatures, the effect is not obvious.

The structure of Roper resonance is studied as hybrid states through decays J/Ψ→p*, N** by calculating the angular distributions and decay widths. The results show that the angular distribution parameters for decays J/Ψ→p*, N** are almost equal if the Roper is identified as a pure hybrid state, while their decay width are less the 1% of that for the decay J/Ψ→p, and the variance of the ratio Γ(J/Ψ→N*p)/Γ(J/Ψ→p) and Γ(J/Ψ→N**)/ Γ(J/Ψ→p) with the mixing parameter are presented, and also the scheme to identify the Roper structure in J/Ψ decays is discussed.

A model for thermally activated dynamics in disordered systems shows that the linear and nonlinear susceptibility follows a generic exponential form with a "critical rounding," chi(1) proportional to chi(3) proportional to [T ln(t/tau(0)')/K](gamma/b phi) exp - [Tt(g)(phi b)ln(t/tau(0)'/K)](nu/b) (T=temperature, t=time, K=barrier constant, t(g) = 1 - T(SG)/T, and T(SG) = transition temperature; gamma>0 for chi(3) and <0 for chi(1)). This model, also valid in the presence of resonant tunneling states at energies K(0) < K [provided that K is replaced by K(0)+2T ln (1/Gamma(0)), where Gamma(0)(2) proportional, variant tunnel splitting of a spin S=1], is potentially applicable to a wide variety of systems opening the way for the study of thermally activated quantum phase transitions. The famous spin-glass system LiHo(x)Y(1-x) seems to follow this model.

Transverse relaxation time (T(2*))-weighted (1)H-MRI of mouse lungs has been performed using partial liquid ventilation (PLV) with a perfluorocarbon (PFC)-in-water emulsion as a contrast modality for lung MRI. Significant sensitivity enhancement in MRI of mouse lungs has been demonstrated with the protocol. The results show that the T(2*) value in lung is approximately proportional to the infusion dose up to a dose of 5 ml/kg body weight (BW) (4.5 g PFC/kg BW) and becomes essentially constant beyond this dosage. T(2*) maps of lungs have been calculated and T(2*) in lungs is in the range of 10-35 ms with this technique, which is an order of magnitude greater than the T(2*) value of mouse lungs without using a PFC-in-water emulsion. T(2*)-weighted (1)H-MR images of mouse lungs have been obtained with good quality under our experimental conditions. We have applied this technique to detect tumors in mouse lungs. Our technique can detect small lung tumors of B16 melanoma, about 1 mm in diameter, in mice. With its significant MR sensitivity enhancement and technical simplicity, T(2*)-weighted (1)H-MRI using PLV with PFC-in-water emulsion offers a promising approach to investigate lung cancers using rodent models.

We study the challenging thermal phase transition to stripe order in the frustrated square-lattice Ising model with couplings J(1) < 0 (nearest-neighbor, ferromagnetic) and J(2) > 0 (second-neighbor, antiferromagnetic) for g = J(2)/|J(1| > 1/2. Using Monte Carlo simulations and known analytical results, we demonstrate Ashkin-Teller criticality for g ≥ g*; i.e., the critical exponents vary continuously between those of the 4-state Potts model at g = g* and the Ising model for g → ∞. Thus, stripe transitions offer a route to realizing a related class of conformal field theories with conformal charge c = 1 and varying exponents. The transition is first order for g < g* = 0.67 ± 0.01, much lower than previously believed, and exhibits pseudo-first-order behavior for |g* ≤ g

ObjectivesTo assess the feasibility of ferumoxytol-enhanced MRI in pregnancy with a nonhuman primate model.Materials and methodsIn this prospective study, eleven pregnant rhesus macaques at day 98 ± 5 of gestation were divided into three groups, untreated control (UC) (n = 3), saline control (SC) (n = 4) and interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β) treated (IT) (n = 4), which were administered with either saline or IL-1β into the amniotic fluid. All animals were imaged at multiple time points before and after ferumoxytol administration (4 mg/kg). Longitudinal R2* and susceptibility of tissues were obtained using region-of-interest analysis and the longitudinal changes were assessed using linear mixed models and Student's t-test.ResultsIn fetuses, a slope of 0.3 s1/day (P = 0.008), 0.00 ppm/day (P = 0.699) and − 0.2 s1/day (P = 0.023) was observed in liver R2*, liver susceptibility, and lung R2*, respectively. In placentas, R2* and susceptibility increased immediately after ferumoxytol administration (P < 0.001) and decreased to baseline within two days. The mean change from baseline showed no significant difference between the SC group and the IT group at all scan time points. In maternal livers, R2* increased immediately after ferumoxytol administration, further increased at one-day, and then decreased but remained elevated (P < 0.001). The mean change from baseline showed no significant difference between the SC group and the IT group at all scan time points.ConclusionsThis work demonstrates the feasibility of quantitative ferumoxytol-enhanced MRI to measure dynamics of ferumoxytol delivery and washout in the placenta. Stable MRI measurements indicated no evidence of iron deposition in fetal tissues of nonhuman primates after maternal ferumoxytol exposure.

The magnetization, M(H< or =30 T,0.7< or =T< or =300 K), of (C5H12N)2CuBr4 has been used to identify this system as an S = 1/2 Heisenberg two-leg ladder in the strong-coupling limit, J( perpendicular) = 13.3 K and J( parallel) = 3.8 K, with H(c1) = 6.6 T and H(c2) = 14.6 T. An inflection point in M(H,T = 0.7 K) at half saturation, M(s)/2, is described by an effective XXZ chain. The data exhibit universal scaling behavior in the vicinity of H(c1) and H(c2), indicating that the system is near a quantum critical point.
