The interaction between H(2) molecules and boron nitride (BN) single-walled nanotubes with BN divacancies is investigated with density-functional theory. Our calculations reveal that H(2) molecules adsorb physically outside defective BN nanotubes, and cannot enter into BN nanotubes through bare BN divacancies because the energy barrier is as high as 4.62 eV. After the defects are saturated by hydrogen atoms, the physisorption behavior of H(2) molecules is not changed, but the energy barrier of H(2) molecules entering into BN nanotubes through the defects is reduced to 0.58 eV. This phenomenon is ascribed to hydrogen saturation induced reduction of electrostatic potential around the defects.  相似文献

Adsorption of hydrogen molecules on platinum-doped single-walled zigzag (8,0) boron nitride (BN) nanotube is investigated using the density-functional theory. The Pt atom tends to occupy the axial bridge site of the BN tube with the highest binding energy of -0.91 eV. Upon Pt doping, several occupied and unoccupied impurity states are induced, which reduces the band gap of the pristine BN nanotube. Upon hydrogen adsorption on Pt-doped BN nanotube, the first hydrogen molecule can be chemically adsorbed on the Pt-doped BN nanotube without crossing any energy barrier, whereas the second hydrogen molecule has to overcome a small energy barrier of 0.019 eV. At least up to two hydrogen molecules can be chemically adsorbed on a single Pt atom supported by the BN nanotube, with the average adsorption energy of -0.365 eV. Upon hydrogen adsorption on a Pt-dimer-doped BN nanotube, the formation of the Pt dimer not only weakens the interaction between the Pt cluster and the BN nanotube but also reduces the average adsorption energy of hydrogen molecules. These calculation results can be useful in the assessment of metal-doped BN nanotubes as potential hydrogen storage media.  相似文献

In this paper, the dissociative chemisorption of hydrogen on both pure and Ti-incorporated Mg(0001) surfaces are studied by ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The calculated dissociation barrier of hydrogen molecule on a pure Mg(0001) surface (1.05 eV) is in good agreement with comparable theoretical studies. For the Ti-incorporated Mg(0001) surface, the activated barrier decreases to 0.103 eV due to the strong interaction between the molecular orbital of hydrogen and the d metal state of Ti. This could explain the experimentally observed improvement in absorption kinetics of hydrogen when transition metals have been introduced into the magnesium materials.  相似文献

The hydrogen adsorption, dissociation, and migration on the tin dioxide surface have been modeled by the density functional theory method within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) under periodic conditions using a projector-augmented plane-wave (PAW) basis set with a pseudopotential. It has been demonstrated that dissociative chemisorption onto the tin dioxide surface depends on the adsorption site and the surface structure and that there are places on the surface where dissociation can occur with a low barrier of 0.1–0.2 eV to yield a primary isomer in which one of the hydrogen atoms is bound to the tin atom and the other, to an oxygen atom; the second dissociation even at the same place is possible only if the primary isomer overcomes a barrier of ∼1 eV and transforms to the secondary isomer with two O-H bonds.  相似文献

The dissociation and formation of water on the Rh(111) and Ni(111) surfaces have been studied using density functional theory with generalized gradient approximation and ultrasoft pseudopotentials. Calculations have been performed on 2x2 surface unit cells, corresponding to coverages of 0.25 ML, with spot checks on 3x3 surface unit cells (0.11 ML). On both surfaces, the authors find that water adsorbs flat on top of a surface atom, with binding energies of 0.35 and 0.25 eV, respectively, on Rh(111) and Ni(111), and is free to rotate in the surface plane. Barriers of 0.92 and 0.89 eV have to be overcome to dissociate the molecule into OH and H on the Rh(111) and Ni(111) surfaces, respectively. Further barriers of 1.03 and 0.97 eV need to be overcome to dissociate OH into O and H. The barriers for the formation of the OH molecule from isolated adsorbed O and H are found to be 1.1 and 1.3 eV, and the barriers for the formation of the water molecule from isolated adsorbed OH and H are 0.82 and 1.05 eV on the two surfaces. These barriers are found to vary very little as coverage is changed from 0.25 to 0.11 ML. The authors have also studied the dissociation of OH in the presence of coadsorbed H or O. The presence of a coadsorbed H atom only weakly affects the energy barriers, but the effect of O is significant, changing the dissociation barrier from 1.03 to 1.37 and 1.15 eV at 0.25 or 0.11 ML coverage on the Rh(111) surface. Finally, the authors have studied the dissociation of water in the presence of one O atom on Rh(111), at 0.11 ML coverage, and the authors find a barrier of 0.56 eV to dissociate the molecule into OH+OH.  相似文献

It is suggested that, for the operation of platinum catalysts based on tin dioxide in air hydrogen fuel cells, hydrogen spillover (migration) leading to a change in the electron and proton contributions of the catalyst conductivity is of crucial importance. The hydrogen adsorption, dissociation, and migration in the platinum-tin dioxide-hydrogen system surface have been modeled by the density functional theory method within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) under periodic conditions using a projector-augmented plane-wave (PAW) basis set with a pseudopotential. It has been demonstrated that the adsorption energy of a hydrogen molecule onto a platinum cluster increases from 1.6 to 2.4 eV as the distance to the SnO2 substrate decreases. The calculated Pt-H bond length for adsorbed structures is 1.58–1.78 Å. The computer modeling has demonstrated that: (1) the hydrogen adsorption energy on clusters is higher than on the perfect platinum surface; (2) dissociative chemisorption onto Pt n clusters can occur without a barrier and depends on the adsorption site and the cluster structure; (3) the adsorption energy of hydrogen onto the SnO2 surface is higher than the adsorption energy onto the platinum cluster surface: (4) multiple H2 dissociation on the tin dioxide surface occurs with a barrier; (5) the dissociation adsorption of hydrogen molecules onto the platinum cluster surface followed by atom migration (spillover) is energetically favorable.  相似文献

Ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations are performed to explore possible catalytic effects on the dissociative chemisorption of hydrogen on a Mg(0001) surface when carbon is incorporated into Mg materials. The computational results imply that a C atom located initially on a Mg(0001) surface can migrate into the subsurface and occupy an fcc interstitial site, with charge transfer to the C atom from neighboring Mg atoms. The effect of subsurface C on the dissociation of H2 on the Mg(0001) surface is found to be relatively marginal: a perfect sublayer of interstitial C is calculated to lower the barrier by 0.16 eV compared with that on a pure Mg(0001) surface. Further calculations reveal, however, that sublayer C may have a significant effect in enhancing the diffusion of atomic hydrogen into the sublayers through fcc channels. This contributes new physical understanding toward rationalizing the experimentally observed improvement in absorption kinetics of H2 when graphite or single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) are introduced into the Mg powder during ball milling.  相似文献

Density functional theory was used to investigate the reaction pathways for HSCH(3) adsorption on Au(111) at low coverage. A molecular adsorbed state was found with the S atom bond on Top sites (E approximately -0.38 eV) and molecular adsorption is nonactivated. The H-SCH(3) dissociation process is energetically less favorable and becomes slightly exothermic only when surface relaxation is considered (DeltaE approximately -0.2 eV). All the reaction pathways present a sizable activation energy barrier, with the lowest being approximately 0.52 eV (0.41 eV taking into account slab relaxation). In the corresponding saddle point of the potential energy surface, the S atom of the methylthiolate molecule is placed on Top sites and the H near a Bridge site. The high barrier obtained explains the complete absence of reactive methanethiol dissociation found in recent experiments.  相似文献

The physisorption and chemisorption of hydrogen in BN nanotubes, investigated by density functional theory (DFT), were compared with carbon nanotubes. The physisorption of H2 on BN nanotubes is less favorable energetically than on carbon nanotubes; BN nanotubes cannot adsorb hydrogen molecules effectively in this manner. Chemisorption of H2 molecules on pristine BN nanotubes is endothermic. Consequently, perfect BN nanotubes are not good candidates for hydrogen storage by either mechanism. Other strategies must be utilized if BN nanotubes are to be employed as hydrogen storage media such as utilizing them as supporting media for hydrogen-absorbing metal nanoclusters.  相似文献

Boron nitride (BN) nanotubes were synthesized through chemical vapor deposition over a wafer made by a LaNi5/B mixture and nickel powder at 1473 K. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were performed to characterize the microstructure and composition of BN nanotubes. It was found that the obtained BN nanotubes were straight with a diameter of 30-50 nm and a length of up to several microns. We first verify that the BN nanotubes can storage hydrogen by means of an electrochemical method, though its capacity is low at present. The hydrogen desorption of nonelectrochemical recombination in cyclic voltammograms, which is considered as the slow reaction at BN nanotubes, suggests the possible existence of strong chemisorption of hydrogen, and it may lead to the lower discharge capacity of BN nanotubes. It is tentatively concluded that the improvement of the electrocatalytic activity by surface modification with metal or alloy would enhance the electrochemical hydrogen storage capacity of BN nanotubes.  相似文献

Influences of coadsorbed sodium and water, aqueous solvent, and electrode potential on the kinetics of O(2) dissociation over Pt(111) are systematically investigated using density functional theory models of vacuum and electrochemical interfaces. Na coadsorption alters the electronic states of Pt to stabilize the reactant (O(2)*), transition, and product (2O*) states by facilitating electron donation to oxygen, causing a more exothermic reaction energy (-0.84 eV for Na and O(2), -0.81 eV for isolated O(2)) and a decrease in dissociation barrier (0.39 eV for Na and O(2), 0.57 eV for isolated O(2)). Solvation decreases the reaction energy (-0.67 eV) due to enhanced hydrogen bond stabilization of O(2)* compared to 2O*. The influence of Na is less pronounced at the solvated interface (barrier decreases by only 0.11 eV) because H(2)O screens Na charge-donation. In the electrochemical model system, the dissociation energy becomes more exothermic and the barrier decreases toward more positive potentials. Potential-dependent behavior results from changes in interfacial dipole moment and polarizability between O(2)*, the dissociation transition state, and 2O*; each are influenced by changes in adsorption and hydrogen bonding. Coadsorption of Na in the solvated system dampens the dipole moment change between O(2)* and 2O* and significantly increases the polarizability at the dissociation transition state and for 2O*; the combination causes little change in the reaction energy but reduces the activation barrier by 0.08 eV at 0 V versus NHE. The potential-dependent behavior contrasts that determined at a constant surface charge or from an applied electric field, illustrating the importance of considering the electrochemical potential at the fully-solvated interface in determining reaction energetics, even for non-redox reactions.  相似文献

Adsorption and protonation of CO2 on the (110) and (100) surfaces of gamma-Al2O3 have been studied using density functional theory slab calculations. On the dry (110) and (100) surfaces, the O-Al bridge sites were found to be energetically favorable for CO2 adsorption. The adsorbed CO2 was bound in a bidentate configuration across the O-Al bridge sites, forming a carbonate species. The strongest binding with an adsorption energy of 0.80 eV occurs at the O3c-Al5c bridge site of the (100) surface. Dissociation of water across the O-Al bridge sites resulted in partially hydroxylated surfaces, and the dissociation is energetically favorable on both surfaces. Water dissociation on the (110) surface has a barrier of 0.42 eV, but the same process on the (100) surface has no barrier with respect to the isolated water molecule. On the partially hydroxylated gamma-Al2O3 surfaces, a bicarbonate species was formed by protonating the carbonate species with the protons from neighboring hydroxyl groups. The energy difference between the bicarbonate species and the coadsorbed bidentate carbonate species and hydroxyls is only 0.04 eV on the (110) surface, but the difference reaches 0.97 eV on the (100) surface. The activation barrier for forming the bicarbonate species on the (100) surface, 0.42 eV, is also lower than that on the (110) surface (0.53 eV).  相似文献

Adsorption of transition atoms on a (8,0) zigzag single-walled boron nitride (BN) nanotube has been investigated using density-functional theory methods. Main focuses have been placed on configurations corresponding to the located minima of the adsorbates, the corresponding binding energies, and the modified electronic properties of the BN nanotubes due to the adsorbates. We have systemically studied a series of metal adsorbates including all 3d transition-metal elements (Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) and two group-VIIIA transition-metal elements (Pd and Pt). We found that many transition-metal atoms can be chemically adsorbed on the outer surface of the BN nanotubes and that the adsorption process is typically exothermic. Upon adsorption, the binding energies of the Sc, Ti, Ni, Pd, and Pt atoms are relatively high (>1.0 eV), while those of V, Fe, and Co atoms are modest, ranging from 0.62 to 0.92 eV. Mn atom forms a weak bond with the BN nanotube, while Zn atom cannot be chemically adsorbed on the BN nanotube. In most cases, the adsorption of transition-metal atoms can induce certain impurity states within the band gap of the pristine BN nanotube, thereby reducing the band gap. Most metal-adsorbed BN nanotubes exhibit nonzero magnetic moments, contributed largely by the transition-metal atoms.  相似文献

Collision and adsorption of hydrogen with high incident kinetic energies on a single-walled boron nitride (BN) nanotube have been investigated. Molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations indicate that at incident energies below 14 eV hydrogen bounces off the BN nanotube wall. On the other hand, at incident energies between 14 and 22 eV each hydrogen molecule is dissociated at the exterior wall to form two hydrogen atoms, but only one of them goes through the wall. However, at the incident energies between 23 and 26 eV all of the hydrogen atoms dissociated at the exterior wall are found to be capable of going inside the nanotube and then to recombine to form hydrogen molecules inside the nanotube. Consequently, it is determined that hydrogen should have the incident energy >22 eV to go inside the nanotube. On the other hand, we find that the collisions using the incident energies >26 eV could result in damaging the nanotube structures. In addition our MD simulations find that hydrogen atoms dissociated at the wall cannot bind to either boron or nitrogen atoms in the interior wall of the nanotube.  相似文献

The effect of hydrogen on the adsorption and dissociation of the oxygen molecule on a TiO2 anatase (001) surface is studied by first‐principles calculations coupled with the nudged elastic band (NEB) method. Hydrogen adatoms on the surface can increase the absolute value of the adsorption energy of the oxygen molecule. A single H adatom on an anatase (001) surface can lower dramatically the dissociation barrier of the oxygen molecule. The adsorption energy of an O2 molecule is high enough to break the O?O bond. The system energy is lowered after dissociation. If two H adatoms are together on the surface, an oxygen molecule can be also strongly adsorbed, and the adsorption energy is high enough to break the O?O bond. However, the system energy increases after dissociation. Because dissociation of the oxygen molecule on a hydrogenated anatase (001) surface is more efficient, and the oxygen adatoms on the anatase surface can be used to oxidize other adsorbed toxic small gas molecules, hydrogenated anatase is a promising catalyst candidate.  相似文献

The dissociation mechanism of a water molecule at an oxygen vacancy on the MgO(100) surface was studied by using the embedded cluster method at the DFT/B3 LYP level, while the energetic information was refined by using the IMOMO method at the CCSD level. We found that a water molecule initially adsorbs on one of the magnesium ions surrounding the vacancy site with a binding energy of 15.98 kcal mol(-1). It then can dissociate on the MgO(100) surface along two possible dissociation pathways. One pathway produces a hydroxyl group bonded to the original magnesium with a proton filling the vacancy via a transition state with a barrier of 4.67 kcal mol(-1) relative to the adsorbed water configuration. The other pathway yields two hydroxy groups; the hydroxy group originally belonging to the water molecule fills the vacancy, while the hydrogen atom binds with the surface oxygen to form the other hydroxy group. Hydrogen atoms of these hydroxy groups can recombine to form a hydrogen molecule and the surface is healed. Although the barrier (14.09 kcal mol(-1)) of the rate-controlling step of the latter pathway is higher than that of the former one, the energies of all of its stationary points are lower than that of the separated reactants (H(2)O+cluster). The effects of water coadsorption are modeled by placing an additional water molecule near the active center, which suggests that the more coadsorbed water molecules further stabilize the hydroxy species and prevent the hydrogen molecule formation through the latter pathway. The results support the photoemission spectral evidence of water dissociation on the defective MgO(100) surface at low water coverage.  相似文献

The adsorption, dissociation, and diffusion of hydrogen in Ni(100) and Ni(100)/YSZ(100) slabs with two different interfaces (Ni/cation and Ni/O interface) have been studied by the density functional theory (DFT) with the Perdew-Wang functional. The H(2) molecule is found to preferentially absorb on a Top (T) site with side-on configuration on the Ni(100) surface, while the H-atom is strongly bound at a fcc Hollow (H) site. The barrier for the H(2) dissociation on both surfaces is calculated to be only ~0.1 eV. The potential energy pathways of H diffusion on pure Ni and Ni/YSZ with the two different interfaces are studied. Our calculated results show that the H-atom diffusion occurs via surface path rather than the bulk path. For the bulk path in Ni/YSZ, H-atom migration can occur more readily at the Ni/cation interface compared to the Ni/O interface. The existence of vacancy in the interface region is found to improve the mobility of H-atoms at the interface of Ni/YSZ slab. The rate constants for hydrogen dissociation and diffusion in pure Ni and Ni/YSZ are predicted.  相似文献

Nanocable models comprised of BN nanotubes filled with close-packed Cu nanowires were investigated by gradient-corrected density functional theory (DFT) computations. The optimal distance between the sidewall of BN nanotubes and the atoms in a copper nanowire is about 0.35 nm, with a weak insertion energy (ca. -0.04 eV per Cu atom). Hence, such nanocables are assembled by weaker van der Waals (vdW) forces, rather than by chemical bonding interactions. The electronic band structures of the BN/Cu hybrid systems are superposition of those of the separate components, the BN nanotubes, and the Cu nanowires. Since charge density analyses show that the conduction electrons are distributed only on the copper atoms, charge transport will occur only in these inner nanowires, which are effectively insulated by the outer BN nanotubes. On the basis of these computational results, BN/Cu hybrid structures should be ideal nanocables.  相似文献

Catalyzed collapse and enhanced hydrogen storage of BN nanotubes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The novel morphology of BN nanotubes with a collapsed structure has been discovered by a metal-catalyzed treatment. The collapse causes the dramatic enlargement of a specific surface area of BN nanotubes and remarkably enhances the hydrogen storage capacity of BN nanotubes.  相似文献
