The Amenability of Measure Algebras

In this paper we shall prove that the measure algebra M(G) ofa locally compact group G is amenable as a Banach algebra ifand only if G is discrete and amenable as a group. Our contributionis to resolve a conjecture by proving that M(G) is not amenablein the case where the group G is not discrete. Indeed, we shallprove a much stronger result: the measure algebra of a non-discrete,locally compact group has a non-zero, continuous point derivationat a certain character on the algebra.     

Complemented ideals in the Fourier algebra of a locally compact group

In this paper we provide a necessary condition for a closed ideal in the Fourier algebra of a locally compact amenable group to be completely complemented. The classification of completely complemented ideals is completed in the case of an amenable discrete group. We also investigate the ideals possessing a bounded approximate identity.

     

Classification of minimal actions of a compact Kac algebra with amenable dual on injective factors of type III

We classify a certain class of minimal actions of a compact Kac algebra with amenable dual on injective factors of type III. The structural analysis of type III factors and the canonical extension of endomorphisms introduced by Izumi are our main technical tools.     

Homological Properties of Modules Over Group Algebras

Let G be a locally compact group, and let L¹ (G) be the Banachalgebra which is the group algebra of G. We consider a varietyof Banach left L¹ (G)-modules over L¹ (G), and seek to determineconditions on G that determine when these modules are eitherprojective or injective or flat in the category. The answerstypically involve G being compact or discrete or amenable. Forexample, in the case where G is discrete and 1 < p < ,we find that the module ^p (G) is injective whenever G is amenable,and that, if it is amenable, then G is ‘pseudo-amenable’,a property very close to that of amenability. 2000 MathematicsSubject Classification 46H25, 43A20.     

△-tame quasi-hereditary algebras

Let (K, M, H) be an upper triangular bimodule problem. Brüstle and Hille showed that the opposite algebra A of the endomorphism algebra of a projective generator P of the matrices category of (K, M, H) is quasi-hereditary, and there is an equivalence between the category of △-good modules of A and Mat(K, M). In this note, based on the tame theorem for bimodule problems, we show that if the algebra A associated with an upper triangular bimodule problem is of △-tame representation type, then the category F(△) has the homogeneous property, i.e. almost all modules in F(△) are isomorphic to their Auslander-Reiten translations. Moreover, if (K, M, H) is an upper triangular bipartite bimodule problem, then A is of △-tame representation type if and only if F(△) is homogeneous.     

Diagonal invariant ideals of Toeplitz algebras on discrete groups

Diagonal invariant ideals of Toeplitz algebras defined on discrete groups are introduced and studied. In terms of isometric representations of Toeplitz algebras associated with quasi-ordered groups, a character of a discrete group to be amenable is clarified. It is proved that whenG is Abelian, a closed twosided non-trivial ideal of the Toeplitz algebra defined on a discrete Abelian ordered group is diagonal invariant if and only if it is invariant in the sense of Adji and Murphy, thus a new proof of their result is given.     

On the nuclearity of certain Cuntz‐Pimsner algebras

In the present paper, we give a short proof of the nuclearity property of a class of Cuntz‐Pimsner algebras associated with a Hilbert ??‐bimodule ??, where ?? is a separable and nuclear C *‐algebra. We assume that the left ??‐action on the bimodule ?? is given in terms of compact module operators and that ?? is direct summand of the standard Hilbert module over ?? Hochschild cohomologies for associative conformal algebras

We introduce the concept of Hochschild cohomologies for associative conformal algebras. It is shown that the second cohomology group of a conformal Weyl algebra with values in any bimodule is trivial. As a consequence, we derive that the conformal Weyl algebra is segregated in any extension with nilpotent kernel. Approximate and pseudo-amenability of various classes of Banach algebras

We continue the investigation of notions of approximate amenability that were introduced in work of the second and third authors together with R.J. Loy. It is shown that every boundedly approximately contractible Banach algebra has a bounded approximate identity, and that the Fourier algebra of the free group on two generators is not operator approximately amenable. Further examples are obtained of ?¹-semigroup algebras which are approximately amenable but not amenable; using these, we show that bounded approximate contractibility need not imply sequential approximate amenability. Results are also given for Segal algebras on locally compact groups, and algebras of p-pseudo-functions on discrete groups.     

On Gorenstein injective discrete modules over profinite groups

Gorenstein homological algebra was introduced in categories of modules. But it has proved to be a fruitful way to study various other categories such as categories of complexes and of sheaves. In this paper, the research of relative homological algebra in categories of discrete modules over profinite groups is initiated. This seems appropriate since (in some sense) the subject of Gorenstein homological algebra had its beginning with Tate homology and cohomology over finite groups. We prove that if the profinite group has virtually finite cohomological dimension then every discrete module has a Gorenstein injective envelope, a Gorenstein injective cover and we study various cohomological dimensions relative to Gorenstein injective discrete modules. We also study the connection between relative and Tate cohomology theories.     

Some permanence properties of C-unique groups

We will study some permanence properties of C^*-unique groups in details. In particular, normal subgroups and extensions will be considered. Among other interesting results, we prove that every second countable amenable group with an injective finite-dimensional representation (not necessarily unitary) is a retract of a C^*-unique group. Moreover, any amenable discrete group is a retract of a discrete C^*-unique group.     

Characterizations of Centralizable Mappings on Algebras of Locally Measurable Operators

A linear mapping φ from an algebra A into its bimodule M is called a centralizable mapping at G ∈ A if φ(AB)=φ(A)B=Aφ(B) for each A and B in A with AB=G. In this paper, we prove that if M is a von Neumann algebra without direct summands of type I₁ and type II, A is a *-subalgebra with M ⊆ A ⊆ LS(M) and G is a fixed element in A, then every continuous (with respect to the local measure topology t(M)) centralizable mapping at G from A into M is a centralizer.     

Representation type of Jordan algebras

The problem of classification of Jordan bimodules over (non-semisimple) finite dimensional Jordan algebras with respect to their representation type is considered. The notions of diagram of a Jordan algebra and of Jordan tensor algebra of a bimodule are introduced and a mapping Qui is constructed which associates to the diagram of a Jordan algebra J the quiver of its universal associative enveloping algebra S(J). The main results are concerned with Jordan algebras of semi-matrix type, that is, algebras whose semi-simple component is a direct sum of Jordan matrix algebras. In this case, criterion of finiteness and tameness for one-sided representations are obtained, in terms of diagram and mapping Qui, for Jordan tensor algebras and for algebras with radical square equals to 0.

Totally compatible associative and Lie dialgebras, tridendriform algebras and PostLie algebras

This paper studies the concepts of a totally compatible dialgebra and a totally compatible Lie dialgebra,defined to be a vector space with two binary operations that satisfy individual and mixed associativity conditions and Lie algebra conditions respectively.We show that totally compatible dialgebras are closely related to bimodule algebras and semi-homomorphisms.More significantly,Rota-Baxter operators on totally compatible dialgebras provide a uniform framework to generalize known results that Rota-Baxter related operators give tridendriform algebras.Free totally compatible dialgebras are constructed.We also show that a Rota-Baxter operator on a totally compatible Lie dialgebra gives rise to a PostLie algebra,generalizing the fact that a Rota-Baxter operator on a Lie algebra gives rise to a PostLie algebra.     

Current algebras, highest weight categories and quivers

We study the category of graded finite-dimensional representations of the polynomial current algebra associated to a simple Lie algebra. We prove that the category has enough injectives and compute the graded character of the injective envelopes of the simple objects as well as extensions between simple objects. The simple objects in the category are parametrized by the affine weight lattice. We show that with respect to a suitable refinement of the standard ordering on the affine weight lattice the category is highest weight. We compute the Ext quiver of the algebra of endomorphisms of the injective cogenerator of the subcategory associated to an interval closed finite subset of the weight lattice. Finally, we prove that there is a large number of interesting quivers of finite, affine and star-shaped type, as well as tame quasi-hereditary algebras, that arise from our study.

Weak and cyclic amenability for Fourier algebras of connected Lie groups

Using techniques of non-abelian harmonic analysis, we construct an explicit, non-zero cyclic derivation on the Fourier algebra of the real ax+b$ax+b$ group. In particular this provides the first proof that this algebra is not weakly amenable. Using the structure theory of Lie groups, we deduce that the Fourier algebras of connected, semisimple Lie groups also support non-zero, cyclic derivations and are likewise not weakly amenable. Our results complement earlier work of Johnson (1994) [15], Plymen (2001) [18] and Forrest, Samei, and Spronk (2009) [9]. As an additional illustration of our techniques, we construct an explicit, non-zero cyclic derivation on the Fourier algebra of the reduced Heisenberg group, providing the first example of a connected nilpotent group whose Fourier algebra is not weakly amenable.
