An unsteady boundary layer flow of a non-Newtonian fluid over a continuously stretching permeable surface in the presence of thermal radiation is investigated. The Maxwell fluid model is used to characterize the non-Newtonian fluid behavior. Similarity solutions for the transformed governing equations are obtained. The transformed boundary layer equations are then solved numerically by the shooting method. The flow features and heat transfer characteristics for different values of the governing parameters (unsteadiness parameter, Maxwell parameter, permeability parameter, suction/blowing parameter, thermal radiation parameter, and Prandtl number) are analyzed and discussed in detail.  相似文献

The solution to the unsteady mixed convection boundary layer flow and heat transfer problem due to a stretching vertical surface is presented in this paper. The unsteadiness in the flow and temperature fields is caused by the time-dependent of the stretching velocity and the surface temperature. The governing partial differential equations with three independent variables are first transformed into ordinary differential equations, before they are solved numerically by a finite-difference scheme. The effects of the unsteadiness parameter, buoyancy parameter and Prandtl number on the flow and heat transfer characteristics are thoroughly examined. Both assisting and opposing buoyant flows are considered. It is observed that for assisting flow, the solutions exist for all values of buoyancy parameter, whereas for opposing flow, they exist only if the magnitude of the buoyancy parameter is small. Comparison with known results for steady-state flow is excellent.  相似文献

This study presents an analysis of the axisymmetric flow of a non-Newtonian fluid over a radially stretching sheet. The momentum equations for two-dimensional flow are first modeled for Sisko fluid constitutive model, which is a combination of power-law and Newtonian fluids. The general momentum equations are then simplified by invoking the boundary layer analysis. Then a non-linear ordinary differential equation governing the axisymmetric boundary layer flow of Sisko fluid over a radially stretching sheet is obtained by introducing new suitable similarity transformations. The resulting non-linear ordinary differential equation is solved analytically via the homotopy analysis method (HAM). Closed form exact solution is then also obtained for the cases n=0 and 1. Analytical results are presented for the velocity profiles for some values of governing parameters such as power-law index, material parameter and stretching parameter. In addition, the local skin friction coefficient for several sets of the values of physical parameter is tabulated and analyzed. It is shown that the results presented in this study for the axisymmetric flow over a radially non-linear stretching sheet of Sisko fluid are quite general so that the corresponding results for the Newtonian fluid and the power-law fluid can be obtained as two limiting cases.  相似文献

The present paper deals with the study of heat transfer characteristics in the laminar boundary layer flow of an incompressible viscous fluid over an unsteady stretching sheet which is placed in a porous medium in the presence of viscous dissipation and internal absorption or generation. Similarity transformations are used to convert the governing time dependent nonlinear boundary layer equations into a system of non-linear ordinary differential equations containing Prandtl number, Eckert number, heat source/sink parameter, porous parameter and unsteadiness parameter with appropriate boundary conditions. These equations are solved numerically by applying shooting method using Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg method. Comparison of numerical results is made with the earlier published results under limiting cases. The effects of the parameters which determine the velocity and temperature fields are discussed in detail.  相似文献

This paper studies the thermal-diffusion and diffusion thermo-effects in the hydro-magnetic unsteady flow by a mixed convection boundary layer past an imperme- able vertical stretching sheet in a porous medium in the presence of chemical reaction. The velocity of t~he stretching surface, the surface temperature, and the concentration are assumed to vary linearly with the distance along the surface. The governing partial differential equations are transformed into self-similar unsteady equations using similarity transformations .and solved numerically by the Runge-Kutta fourth order scheme in as- sociation with the shooting method for the whole transient domain from the initial state to the final steady state flow. Numerical results for the velocity, the temperature, the concentration, the skin friction, and the Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are shown graph- ically for various flow parameters. The results reveal that there is a smooth transition of flow from unsteady state to the final steady state. A special case of our results is in good agreement with an earlier published work.  相似文献

This present analysis discusses the mixed convection boundary layer flow of a magnetohydrodynamic second grade fluid over an unsteady permeable stretching sheet. The time‐dependent stretching velocity and the surface temperature are chosen. Series solutions of the governing boundary value problems are obtained by employing homotopy analysis method. Convergence of the obtained solution is explicitly discussed. The dependence of velocity and temperature profiles on the various quantities is shown and discussed by plotting graphs. Skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number tabulated and analyzed. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A numerical simulation of minimum B‐jumps in horizontal rectangular channels having an abrupt drop is given. Gradually varied, steady, supercritical flow is assumed as the initial condition. An unsteady flow is created by increasing the downstream depth. One‐dimensional, unsteady Saint‐Venant equations are solved by using the MacCormack and the dissipative two–four explicit finite difference schemes. The steady flow solution is obtained by treating the time variable as an iteration parameter and letting the solution converge to the steady state. The abrupt drop is treated as an interior boundary and solved by the method of characteristics. The results are compared with experimental and analytical studies.

The double diffusion effect on the mixed convection flow over a horizontal porous sensor surface placed inside a horizontal channel is analyzed. With the appropriate transformations, the unsteady equations governing the flow are reduced to non-similar boundary layer equations which are solved numerically for the time-dependent mixed convection parameter. The asymptotic solutions are obtained for small and large values of the time-dependent mixed convection parameter. The results are discussed in terms of the skin friction, the heat transfer coefficient, the mass transfer coefficient, and the velocity, temperature, and concentration profiles for different values of the Prandtl number, the Schmidt number, the squeezing index, and the mixed convection parameter.  相似文献

This paper looks at the unsteady three‐dimensional MHD flow of an elastico‐viscous fluid over a stretching surface. The analysis of mass transfer is also analyzed. The governing boundary layer equations are reduced into partial differential equations with three dependent variables through similarity transformations. The transformed system of equations is solved analytically by employing homotopy analysis method (HAM). Plots for various interesting parameters are presented and discussed. Numerical data for surface shear stresses and surface mass transfer in steady case are also tabulated. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, we have studied the effects of radiation on the boundary layer flow and heat transfer of an electrically conducting micropolar fluid over a continuously moving stretching surface embedded in a non-Darcian porous medium with a uniform magnetic field has been analyzed analytically. The governing fundamental equations are approximated by a system of nonlinear locally similar ordinary differential equations which are solved analytically by applying homotopy analysis method (HAM). The effects of Darcy number, heat generation parameter and inertia coefficient parameter are determined on the flow. Convergence of the obtained series solution is discussed. The homotopy analysis method provides us with a new way to obtain series solutions of such problems. This method contains the auxiliary parameter which provides us with a simple way to adjust and control the convergence region of series solution. By suitable choice of the auxiliary parameter, we can obtain reasonable solutions for large modulus.  相似文献

An analysis has been performed to study the unsteady laminar compressible boundary layer governing the hypersonic flow over a circular cone at an angle of attack near a plane of symmetry with either inflow or outflow in the presence of suction. The flow is assumed to be steady at time t=0 and at t>0 it becomes unsteady due to the time-dependent free stream velocity which varies arbitrarily with time. The nonlinear coupled parabolic partial differential equations under boundary layer approximations have been solved by using an implicit finite-difference method. It is found that suction plays an important role in stabilising the fluid motion and in obtaining unique solution of the problem. The effect of the cross flow parameter is found to be more pronounced on the cross flow surface shear stress than on the streamwise surface shear stress and surface heat transfer. Beyond a certain value of the cross flow parameter overshoot in the cross flow velocity occurs and the magnitude of this overshoot increases with the cross flow parameter. The time variation of the streamwise surface shear stress is more significant than that of the cross flow surface shear stress and surface heat transfer. The suction and the total enthalpy at the wall exert strong influence on the streamwise and cross flow surface shear stresses and the surface heat transfer except that the effect of suction on the cross flow surface shear stress is small.  相似文献

A numerical scheme which is a combination of the dual reciprocity boundary element method (DRBEM) and the differential quadrature method (DQM), is proposed for the solution of unsteady magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow problem in a rectangular duct with insulating walls. The coupled MHD equations in velocity and induced magnetic field are transformed first into the decoupled time‐dependent convection–diffusion‐type equations. These equations are solved by using DRBEM which treats the time and the space derivatives as nonhomogeneity and then by using DQM for the resulting system of initial value problems. The resulting linear system of equations is overdetermined due to the imposition of both boundary and initial conditions. Employing the least square method to this system the solution is obtained directly at any time level without the need of step‐by‐step computation with respect to time. Computations have been carried out for moderate values of Hartmann number (M?50) at transient and the steady‐state levels. As M increases boundary layers are formed for both the velocity and the induced magnetic field and the velocity becomes uniform at the centre of the duct. Also, the higher the value of M is the smaller the value of time for reaching steady‐state solution. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In the present work, the effect of MHD flow and heat transfer within a boundary layer flow on an upper-convected Maxwell (UCM) fluid over a stretching sheet is examined. The governing boundary layer equations of motion and heat transfer are non-dimensionalized using suitable similarity variables and the resulting transformed, ordinary differential equations are then solved numerically by shooting technique with fourth order Runge–Kutta method. For a UCM fluid, a thinning of the boundary layer and a drop in wall skin friction coefficient is predicted to occur for higher the elastic number. The objective of the present work is to investigate the effect of Maxwell parameter β, magnetic parameter Mn and Prandtl number Pr on the temperature field above the sheet.  相似文献

An analysis has been carried out to study the magnetohydrodynamic boundary layer flow and heat transfer characteristics of a laminar liquid film over a flat impermeable stretching sheet in the presence of a non-uniform heat source/sink. The basic unsteady boundary layer equations governing the flow and heat transfer are in the form of partial differential equations. These equations are converted to non-linear ordinary differential equations using similarity transformation. Numerical solutions of the resulting boundary value problem are obtained by the efficient shooting technique. The effects of magnetic and the non-uniform heat source/sink parameters on the dynamics are discussed. Findings of the paper reveal that non-uniform heat sinks are better suited for effective cooling of the stretching sheet. Skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number are also explored for typical values of magnetic and non-uniform heat source/sink parameters. The results are in excellent agreement with the earlier published works, under some limiting cases.  相似文献

A steady boundary layer flow of a non-Newtonian Casson fluid over a power-law stretching sheet is investigated. A self-similar form of the governing equation is obtained, and numerical solutions are found for various values of the governing parameters. The solutions depend on the fluid material parameter. Dual solutions are obtained for some particular range of these parameters. The fluid velocity is found to decrease as the power-law stretching parameter β in the rheological Casson equation increases. At large values of β, the skin friction coefficient and the velocity profile across the boundary layer for the Casson fluid tend to those for the Newtonian fluid.  相似文献

In this paper, the problem of unsteady axisymmetric boundary layer flow and heat transfer induced by a permeable shrinking sheet in the presence of radiation effect is studied. The transformed boundary layer equations are solved numerically by an implicit finite‐difference scheme known as the Keller‐box method. The influence of radiation, unsteadiness and mass suction parameters on the reduced skin friction coefficient f′′(0) and the heat transfer coefficient ?θ′(0), as well as the velocity and temperature profiles are presented and discussed in detail. It is found that dual solutions exist and suction parameter delays the separation of boundary layer. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The two‐dimensional convection–diffusion‐type equations are solved by using the boundary element method (BEM) based on the time‐dependent fundamental solution. The emphasis is given on the solution of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) duct flow problems with arbitrary wall conductivity. The boundary and time integrals in the BEM formulation are computed numerically assuming constant variations of the unknowns on both the boundary elements and the time intervals. Then, the solution is advanced to the steady‐state iteratively. Thus, it is possible to use quite large time increments and stability problems are not encountered. The time‐domain BEM solution procedure is tested on some convection–diffusion problems and the MHD duct flow problem with insulated walls to establish the validity of the approach. The numerical results for these sample problems compare very well to analytical results. Then, the BEM formulation of the MHD duct flow problem with arbitrary wall conductivity is obtained for the first time in such a way that the equations are solved together with the coupled boundary conditions. The use of time‐dependent fundamental solution enables us to obtain numerical solutions for this problem for the Hartmann number values up to 300 and for several values of conductivity parameter. The present investigation is concerned with the effect of Hall currents on the flow and heat transfer of an electrically conducting fluid over an unsteady stretching surface in presence of a strong magnetic field. The induced magnetic field is neglected while the electron-atom collision frequency is assumed to be relatively high, so that the Hall effect is assumed to exist. The incorrect similarity transformation of Elbashbeshy and Bazid (Heat Mass Transfer 41:1–4, 2004). is corrected and a physically realistic distribution of the velocity and temperature is obtained. Using a similarity transformation the governing time dependent boundary layer equations for momentum and thermal energy are reduced to a set of coupled ordinary differential equations which are then solved numerically by the shooting method. Effects of the magnetic field, M , Hall parameter, m, and the unsteadiness parameter, S, on the velocity and temperature profiles as well as the local skin friction coefficients and the heat transfer rate are shown graphically.  相似文献
