To prove global existence of classical or mild solutions of reaction-diffusion equations, a priori bounds in the uniform norm are needed. But for interesting examples, often one can only derive bounds for some Lp-norms. Using the structure of the reaction term they can be used to obtain uniform bounds. Two propositions are stated which give conditions for this procedure. The proofs use the smoothing properties of analytic semigroups and the multiplicative Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality. To illustrate the method, we prove global existence of solutions for the Brusselator and a Volterra-Lotka system with one diffusing and one sedentary species.  相似文献

We consider an M/M/1 queueing system in which the queue length may or may not be observable by a customer upon entering the system. The “observable” and “unobservable” models are compared with respect to system properties and performance measures under two different types of optimal customer behavior, which we refer to as “selfishly optimal” and “socially optimal”. We consider average customer throughput rates and show that, under both types of optimal customer behavior, the equality of effective queue-joining rates between the observable and unobservable systems results in differences with respect to other performance measures such as mean busy periods and waiting times. We also show that the equality of selfishly optimal queue-joining rates between the two types of system precludes the equality of socially optimal joining rates, and vice versa.  相似文献

A discrete-time GI/G/1 retrial queue with Bernoulli retrials and time-controlled vacation policies is investigated in this paper. By representing the inter-arrival, service and vacation tlmes using a Markov-based approach, we are able to analyze this model as a level-dependent quasi-birth-and-death (LDQBD) process which makes the model algorithmically tractable. Several performance measures such as the stationary probability distribution and the expected number of customers in the orbit have been discussed with two different policies: deterministic time-controlled system and random time-controlled system. To give a comparison with the known vacation policy in the literature, we present the exhaustive vacation policy as a contrast between these policies under the early arrival system (EAS) and the late arrival system with delayed access (LAS-DA). Significant difference between EAS and LAS-DA is illustrated by some numerical examples.  相似文献

We define what it means for a proper continuous morphism between groupoids to be Haar system preserving, and show that such a morphism induces (via pullback) a *-morphism between the corresponding convolution algebras. We proceed to provide a plethora of examples of Haar system preserving morphisms and discuss connections to noncommutative CW-complexes and interval algebras. We prove that an inverse system of groupoids with Haar system preserving bonding maps has a limit, and that we get a corresponding direct system of groupoid C?-algebras. An explicit construction of an inverse system of groupoids is used to approximate a σ-compact groupoid G by second countable groupoids; if G is equipped with a Haar system and 2-cocycle then so are the approximation groupoids, and the maps in the inverse system are Haar system preserving. As an application of this construction, we show how to easily extend the Maximal Equivalence Theorem of Jean Renault to σ-compact groupoids.  相似文献

We address the probability that k or more Consecutive Customer Losses take place during a busy period of a queue, the so-called k-CCL probability, for oscillating GI X /M//n systems with state dependent services rates, also denoted as GI X /M(m)−M(m)//n systems, in which the service rates oscillate between two forms according to the evolution of the number of customers in the system. We derive an efficient algorithm to compute k-CCL probabilities in these systems starting with an arbitrary number of customers in the system that involves solving a linear system of equations. The results derived are illustrated for specific sets of parameters.  相似文献

Under light traffic, we investigate the quality of a well‐known approximation for first‐moment performance measures for an M/G/c queue, and, in particular, conditions under which the approximation is either an upper or a lower bound. The approach is to combine known relationships between quantities such as average delay and time‐average work in system with direct sample‐path comparisons of system operation under two modes of operation: conventional FIFO and a version of preemptive LIFO. We then use light traffic limit theorems to show an inequality between time‐average work of the M/G/c queue and that of the approximation. In the process, we obtain new and improved approximations. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

In the present paper we consider the service system MX/G/∞ characterized by an infinite number of servers anda general service time distribution. The customers arrive at the system in groups of size X, which is a random variable, the time between group arrivals being exponentially distributed. Using simple probability arguments, we obtain probability generating functions (p.g.f.'s) of the number of busy servers at time t and the number that depart by time t. The relation between cross-sectional algebras of homogeneous Banach-1-algebraic bundles in the sense of Fell [5] and generalized L1-algebras, as defined in slightly different ways by Leptin [7], Busby and Smith [2], and others, has been studied by Busby in [3]. We give an extension of his result, using a different method for obtaining topological group extensions. Instead of first constructing the abstract group extension from the given factor system and then topologizing it, we work in a natural topological setting and define a topological group which turns out to be the group extension belonging to the given factor system. As a consequence we obtain (without separability assumptions) that for any measurable factor system of a locally compact group with values in some other locally compact group the corresponding abstract group extension can be topologized to give a topological (and hence locally compact) group extension.  相似文献

We consider a discrete-time Geo/G/1 retrial queue in which the retrial time has a general distribution and the server, after each service completion, begins a process of search in order to find the following customer to be served. We study the Markov chain underlying the considered queueing system and its ergodicity condition. We find the generating function of the number of customers in the orbit and in the system. We derive the stochastic decomposition law and as an application we give bounds for the proximity between the steady-state distributions for our queueing system and its corresponding standard system. Also, we develop recursive formulae for calculating the steady-state distribution of the orbit and system sizes. Besides, we prove that the M/G/1 retrial queue with general retrial times can be approximated by our corresponding discrete-time system. Finally, we give numerical examples to illustrate the effect of the parameters on several performance characteristics.  相似文献

Motivated by the study of the dynamics of calcium ions in biological cells, the authors derived in [33], via periodic homogenization, a macroscopic bidomain model, by considering in the corresponding microscopic two-component problem a properly scaled nonlinear exchange term. We study here, at the microscopic scale, a similar parabolic system, with a large nonlinear interfacial reaction term. At the macroscopic scale, the nonlinear effect of this reaction term is recovered in the homogenized diffusion matrix, which is not anymore constant. This nonstandard phenomenon shows the fine interplay between reaction and diffusion in such processes.  相似文献

In this paper we study a system composed of a supplier and buyer(s). We assume that the buyer faces random demand with a known distribution function. The supplier faces a known production lead time. The main objective of this study is to determine the optimal delivery lead time and the resulting location of the system inventory. In a system with a single-supplier and a single-buyer it is shown that system inventory should not be split between a buyer and supplier. Based on system parameters of shortage and holding costs, production lead times, and standard deviations of demand distributions, conditions indicating when the supplier or buyer(s) should keep the system inventory are derived. The impact of changes to these parameters on the location of system inventory is examined. For the case with multiple buyers, it is found that the supplier holds inventory for the buyers with the smallest standard deviations, while the buyers with the largest standard deviations hold their own inventory.  相似文献

We consider a reaction-diffusion system which models a fast reversible reaction of type C 1 + C 2?C 3 between mobile reactants inside an isolated vessel. Assuming mass action kinetics, we study the limit when the reaction speed tends to infinity in case of unequal diffusion coefficients and prove convergence of a subsequence of solutions to a weak solution of an appropriate limiting pde-system, where the limiting problem turns out to be of cross-diffusion type. The proof combines the L 2-approach to reaction-diffusion systems having at most quadratic reaction terms with a thorough exploitation of the entropy functional for mass action systems. The limiting cross-diffusion system has unique local strong solutions for sufficiently regular initial data, while uniqueness of weak solutions is in general open but is shown to be valid under restrictions on the diffusivities.  相似文献

The effects of electric fields on the reaction fronts that arisein a system governed by an autocatalytic reaction and a complexationreaction between the autocatalyst and a complexing agent areconsidered. The complexation reaction is assumed to be fastrelative to the autocatalytic reaction and the equations forthis limit are derived. The corresponding travelling waves arediscussed, the case of quadratic autocatalysis being treatedin detail. The existence of minimum speed waves is examined,being dependent on the ratio of diffusion coefficients D, theconcentration S0 and equilibrium constant K of the complexationreaction as well as the electric field strength E. It is seenthat, for some parameter values, minimum speed waves have negativeautocatalayst concentrations, and waves which have the lowestspeed consistent with non-negative concentrations are also obtained.Numerical integrations of the initial-value problem are performedfor representative parameter values. These show the developmentof the appropriate travelling wave (when it exists) as the largetime behaviour of the system, and, in cases where no travellingwave exists, the numerical integrations show the electrophoreticseparation of substrate and autocatalyst.  相似文献

This paper addresses the question of how long it takes for anM/G/1 queue, starting empty, to approach steady state. A coupling technique is used to derive bounds on the variation distance between the distribution of number in the system at timet and its stationary distribution. The bounds are valid for allt. It is well known that for reaction-diffusion 2-species Lotka-Volterra competition models with spatially independent reaction terms, global stability of an equilibrium for the reaction system implies global stability for the reaction-diffusion system. This is not in general true for spatially inhomogeneous models. We show here that for an important range of such models, for small enough diffusion coefficients, global convergence to an equilibrium holds for the reaction-diffusion system, if for each point in space the reaction system has a globally attracting hyperbolic equilibrium. This work is planned as an initial step towards understanding the connection between the asymptotics of reaction-diffusion systems with small diffusion coefficients and that of the corresponding reaction systems.  相似文献

A system with n independent components which has a k-out-of-n: G structure operates if at least k components operate. Parallel systems are 1-out-of-n: G systems, that is, the system goes out of service when all of its components fail. This paper investigates the mean residual life function of systems with independent and nonidentically distributed components. Some examples related to some lifetime distribution functions are given. We present a numerical example for evaluating the relationship between the mean residual life of the k-out-of-n: G system and that of its components.  相似文献

We consider a class of a stochastic reaction-diffusion equations with additive noise. In the limit of fast diffusion, one can approximate solutions of the stochastic reaction–diffusion equations by the solution of a suitable system of ordinary differential equation only describing the reactions, but due to nonlinear interaction of large diffusion and fluctuations in the limit new effective reaction terms appear. We focus on systems with polynomial nonlinearities and illustrate the result by applying it to a predator-prey system and a cubic auto-catalytic reaction between two chemicals.  相似文献
