The synthesis of nanostructured poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (polyNIPA) hydrogels by a two-stage polymerization process is reported here. The process involves the synthesis of slightly crosslinked polyNIPA nanoparticles by inverse (w/o) microemulsion polymerization; then, these particles are dried, cleaned and dispersed in an aqueous solution of NIPA and a crosslinking agent (N,N-methylene-bis-acrylamide or NMBA) and polymerized to produce the nanostructured hydrogels. Their swelling and de-swelling kinetics, volume phase transition temperatures (T VPT) and mechanical properties at the equilibrium swollen state are investigated as a function of the weight ratio of polyNIPA particles to monomer (NIPA). The nanostructured gels exhibit larger equilibrium water uptake, faster swelling and de-swelling rates and similar T VPT than those of the conventional ones; moreover, the elastic and Young moduli are larger than those of the conventional hydrogels at similar swelling ratios. The fast swelling and de-swelling kinetics are explained in terms of the controlled inhomogeneities introduced by the method of synthesis.  相似文献

The thermoresponsive behavior and mechanical properties of nanostructured hydrogels, which consist of poly(acrylamide) nanoparticles embedded in a cross-linked poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) hydrogel matrix, are reported here. Nanostructured hydrogels exhibit a tuned volume phase transition temperature (T VPT), which varies with nanoparticle content in the range from 32 up to 39–40 °C. Moreover, larger equilibrium water uptake, faster swelling and de-swelling rates, and larger equilibrium swelling at 25 °C were obtained with nanostructured hydrogels compared with those of conventional ones. Elastic and Young’s moduli were larger than those of conventional hydrogels at similar swelling ratios. The tuned T VPT and the de-swelling rate were predicted with a modified Flory–Rehner equation coupled with a mixing rule that considers the contribution of both polymers. These behaviors are explained by a combination of hydrophilic/hydrophobic interactions and by the controlled inhomogeneities (nanoparticles) introduced by the method of synthesis.  相似文献

Thermo-sensitive poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) hydrogel with fast response rate was prepared by polymerizing N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPA) in an aqueous hydroxyl-propyl-methyl cellulose solution. The volume phase transition temperature of PNIPA hydrogels was characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and the surface morphology was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The swelling ratios of the hydrogels at different temperatures were measured. Furthermore, the deswelling kinetics of the hydrogels was also studied by measuring their water retention capacity. In comparison with a conventional PNIPA hydrogel prepared in water, the hydrogel synthesized in aqueous hydroxyl-propyl-methyl cellulose solution has higher swelling ratios at temperatures below the lower critical solution temperature and exhibits a much faster response rate to temperature changes. For example, the hydrogel made in aqueous hydroxyl-propyl-methyl cellulose solution lost 89% water within 1 min and about 93% water in 4 min, whereas the conventional hydrogel lost only about 66% water in 15 min from the deswelling measurement in similar conditions. A new kind of pH- and temperature-responsive semi-interpenetrating polymer network hydrogel based on linear carboxymethylchitosan (CMCS) and poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) crosslinked by inorganic clay was prepared. The pH-and temperature-responsive behaviors, the deswelling kinetics, and the mechanical properties of the hydrogel were investigated. The hydrogels exhibited a volume phase transition temperature around 33 °C with no significant deviation from the conventional PNIPA hydrogels. The results of the influence of pH value on the swelling behaviors showed that the minimum swelling ratios of the hydrogels appeared near the isoelectric point (IEP) of CMCS, and when pH deviated from the IEP, the hydrogels behaved as polycations or polyanions. The novel hydrogels had much higher response rate than the conventional CMCS/PNIPA hydrogels. Moreover, the semi-IPN hydrogels crosslinked by clay could be elongated to more than 800% and the elongation could be recovered almost completely and instantaneously.  相似文献

A series of thermosensitive and fast-response poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) hydrogels were prepared by incorporating PVA into cross-linked PNIPA to form a semi-interpenetrating polymeric network (semi-IPN). Compared to the conventional PNIPA hydrogel, the semi-IPN hydrogels thus prepared exhibit significantly faster response rates and undergo full deswelling in 1 min (lose about 95% water within 1 min) when the temperature is raised above their lower critical solution temperature, and have larger equilibrium swelling ratios at room temperature. These improved properties are attributed to the incorporation of PVA, which forms water-releasing channels and results in increased hydrophilicity, into the PNIPA hydrogel networks.  相似文献

A novel semi‐IPN nanocomposite hydrogel (CMC/PNIPA/Clay hydrogel) based on linear sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) crosslinked by inorganic clay was prepared. The structure and morphology of these hydrogels were investigated and their swelling and deswelling kinetics were studied in detail. TEM images showed that the clay was substantially exfoliated to form nano‐dimension platelets dispersed homogeneously in the hydrogels and acted as a multifunctional crosslinker. The CMC/PNIPA/Clay hydrogels swell faster than the corresponding PNIPA/Clay hydrogels at pH 7.4, whereas they swell slower than the PNIPA/Clay hydrogels at pH 1.2. The CMC/PNIPA/Clay nanocomposite hydrogels showed much higher deswelling rates, which was ascribed to more passway formed in these hydrogels for water to diffuse in and out. The deswelling process of the hydrogels could be approximately described by the first‐order kinetic equation and the deswelling rate decreased with increasing clay content. The mechanical properties of the CMC/PNIPA/Clay nanocomposite hydrogels were analyzed based on the theory of rubber elasticity. It was found that with increasing clay content, the effective crosslink chain density, ve, increased whereas the molecular weight of the chains between crosslinks Mc decreased. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel biodegradable hydrogels were designed and synthesized from four types of unsaturated poly(ester amide) (UPEA) and poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEG‐DA) precursors by UV photocrosslinking. These newly synthesized biodegradable UPEA/PEG‐DA hydrogels were characterized by their gel fraction (Gf), equilibrium swelling ratio (Qeq), compressive modulus, and interior morphology. The effect of the precursor feed ratio (UPEAs to PEG‐DA) on the properties of the hydrogels was also studied. The incorporation of UPEA polymers into the PEG‐DA hydrogels increased their hydrophobicity, crosslinking density (denser network), and mechanical strength (higher compressive modulus) but reduced Qeq. When different types of UPEA precursors were coupled with PEG‐DA at the same feed ratio (20 wt %), the resulting hydrogels had similar Qeq values and porous three‐dimensional interior morphologies but different Gf and compressive modulus values. These differences in the hydrogel properties were correlated to the chemical structures of the UPEA precursors; that is, the different locations of the >C?C< double bonds in individual UPEA segments resulted in their different reactivities toward PEG‐DA to form hydrogels. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new kind of pH-/temperature-responsive semi-interpenetrating polymer network hydrogels based on linear sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) cross-linked by inorganic clay (CMC/PNIPA/Clay hydrogel) was prepared. The temperature- and pH-responsive behaviors, the mechanical properties of these hydrogels were investigated. The CMC/PNIPA/Clay hydrogels exhibited a volume phase transition temperature around 32 °C with no significant deviation from the conventional PNIPA hydrogels. The swelling ratio of the CMC/PNIPA/Clay hydrogels gradually decreased with increasing the contents of clay. The influence of pH value on swelling behaviors showed that there is a maximum swelling ratio at pH 5.9. Moreover, the CMC/PNIPA/Clay hydrogels exhibited excellent mechanical properties with high tensile stress and elongation at break in excess of 1200%.  相似文献

Macroporous hydrogels are characterized by large pore sizes, high pore volumes, and high specific surface area. Besides these characteristics, macroporous hydrogels based on thermally reversible polymers respond to temperature changes much faster than hydrogels prepared by a conventional method. Crosslinked poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (polyNIPAAm) forms a thermally reversible hydrogel which shows a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) ca. 33°C in aqueous solutions. We have synthesized thermally reversible polyNIPAAm hydrogels having macroporous structures by a new method. These macroporous hydrogels have large pore volumes, large average pore sizes, and faster macromolecule permeation rates in comparison to conventional polyNIPAAm hydrogels synthesized by a conventional method. Compared with conventional polyNIPAAm hydrogels, the macroporous polyNIPAAm hydrogels have higher swelling ratios at temperatures below the LCST and exhibit faster deswelling and reswelling rates. The deswelling rates are especially rapid. These thermally reversible macroporous hydrogels may be very useful in controlled active agent delivery and toxin removal, as well as dewatering of solutions. Peptides or proteins may behave as if they were in bulk solution within the large aqueous pores, and this may reduce their inactivation when such gels are used for their storage and later release. The gels may also be useful in microrobotic devices due to their fast response to temperature. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Three series of semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks, based on crosslinked poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPA) and 1 wt % nonionic or ionic (cationic and anionic) linear polyacrylamide (PAAm), were synthesized to improve the mechanical properties of PNIPA gels. The effect of the incorporation of linear polymers into responsive networks on the temperature‐induced transition, swelling behavior, and mechanical properties was studied. Polymer networks with four different crosslinking densities were prepared with various molar ratios (25:1 to 100:1) of the monomer (N‐isopropyl acrylamide) to the crosslinker (methylenebisacrylamide). The hydrogels were characterized by the determination of the equilibrium degree of swelling at 25 °C, the compression modulus, and the effective crosslinking density, as well as the ultimate hydrogel properties, such as the tensile strength and elongation at break. The introduction of cationic and anionic linear hydrophilic PAAm into PNIPA networks increased the rate of swelling, whereas the presence of nonionic PAAm diminished it. Transition temperatures were significantly affected by both the crosslinking density and the presence of linear PAAm in the hydrogel networks. Although anionic PAAm had the greatest influence on increasing the transition temperature, the presence of nonionic PAAm caused the highest dimensional change. Semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks reinforced with cationic and nonionic PAAm exhibited higher tensile strengths and elongations at break than PNIPA hydrogels, whereas the presence of anionic PAAm caused a reduction in the mechanical properties. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thermoresponsive hydrogels are of great importance as smart materials. They are usually composed of cross-linked polymers with a lower critical solution temperature (LCST). Although much is known about networks of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), all other polymers are somewhat neglected. In this work, the temperature-dependent swelling behavior of differently cross-linked thermoresponsive poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) (PEtOx) hydrogels were investigated with regard to varying parameters of the network composition. It was found that the degrees of swelling of the hydrogels converge for a certain polymer/solvent system at a distinct temperature independent of its degree of cross-linking. Furthermore, this temperature correlates with the LCST of the respective starting PEtOx. Its net chain molecular weight Mc only affects the maximum degree of swelling and thus, the swelling–deswelling rate of the hydrogel. The fundamental structure/property relations found in this study could be useful to predict the behavior of other thermoresponsive hydrogels.  相似文献

A novel poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA)/PNIPA interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) was synthesized and characterized. In comparison with conventional PNIPA hydrogels, the shrinking rate of the IPN hydrogel increased when gels, swollen at 20 °C, were immersed in 50 °C water. The phase‐transition temperature of the IPN gel remained unchangeable because of the same chemical constituent in the PNIPA gel. The reswelling kinetics were slower than those of the PNIPA hydrogel because of the higher crosslinking density of the IPN hydrogel. The IPN hydrogel had better mechanical strength because of its higher crosslinking density and polymer volume fraction. The release behavior of 5‐fluorouracil (5‐Fu) from the IPN hydrogel showed that, at a lower temperature, the release of 5‐Fu was controlled by the diffusion of water molecules in the gel network. At a higher temperature, 5‐Fu inside the gel could not diffuse into the medium after a burst release caused by the release of the drug on the surface of the gel. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New thermoresponsive crosslinked hydrogels with controlled multiblock copolymer structure were prepared from equimolar amounts of α,ω-diamino poly(propylene glycol)s with molecular weights (MW) 230, 400, and 2,000 g mol?1 and diepoxy-terminated poly(ethylene glycol)s of approximate MW 1,000; 2,000; and 4,000 g mol?1. Their thermoresponsive character was investigated on the 10–70 °C interval, while the swelling behavior was tested at 21, 37, and 50 °C. All hydrogels displayed temperature sensitivity, but a volume phase transition was noticed only in the case of poly(propylene glycol) (PPG)2000-containing hydrogels. The volume phase transition temperature (T VPT ) depended on the MW of the hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) chains attached to the PPG2000 block, as well as on the added salts. Longer PEG blocks determined a shift of T VPT towards higher values, while the influence of the salt added was in agreement with the Hofmeister series, except for NaH2PO4 which determined the destruction of the hydrogel network. The equilibrium swelling degree depended on the MW of both PEG and PPG blocks, as well as on temperature. The analysis of the swelling process indicated a modification of the gel characteristics with temperature and second-order kinetics for the water penetration into the hydrogel.  相似文献

Here it is demonstrated that mesoporous silicas (MPSs) can be used as effective “topological crosslinkers” for poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) hydrogels to improve the mechanical property. Three‐dimensional bicontinuous mesporous silica is found to effectively reinforce the PNIPA hydrogels, as compared to nonporous silica and two‐dimensional hexagonally ordered mesoporous silica.  相似文献

Novel amphoteric pH-sensitive hydrogels with pendant carboxyl and backbone tertiary amine groups were designed and synthesized. First, ethylenediaminetetraacetic dianhydride (EDTAD) reacted with butanediamine (BDA) via N-acylation reaction to give a polyamide prepolymer with pendant carboxyl groups (PEB–COOH); then amino-terminated poly(ethylene glycol) 500 (ATPEG500) was added as a cross-linking agent to produce the desired network polymer (PEB–ATPEG500–COOH). The obtained hydrogels are potentially degradable and non-toxic since its backbone and cross-linking sections are both linked by amide bonds and all monomers have been proved as safe. FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and ninhydrin reaction method were employed to qualitatively and quantitatively characterize the obtained polymers. The effect of cross-linking agent amount, characterized by the molar ratios (Rm) of NH2 groups in ATPEG500 to pendant COOH groups in PEB–COOH, on the swelling behavior of the proposed hydrogel was examined. The results indicate that the equilibrium swelling ratio decreases and the pH-sensitivity becomes retarded with the increase of Rm. For PEB–ATPEG500–COOH hydrogels with Rm no more than 0.42, they exhibited three SRe variation zones at pH 2–4, pH 6–7 and pH 9–11, respectively, suggesting obvious and interesting amphoteric pH-sensitivity. In addition, the swelling kinetics tests on PEB–ATPEG500–COOH with Rm = 0.32 reveal that the swelling kinetics of proposed hydrogel follows a Fickian diffusion process in media of pH 7, and an anomalous diffusion process in media of pH 2 and 11. The above obtained results will facilitate the application of this proposed hydrogel in biomedical fields, particularly in the drug controlled release.  相似文献

Novel temperature-sensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)/amine-terminated polyamidoamine dendrimer G6-NH2 hydrogels with fast responsive properties were synthesized by forming semi-interpenetrating polymeric networks. In contrast to the conventional PNIPA hydrogel, these new gels showed rapid shrinking rate at the temperature above lower critical solution temperature (LCST), and exhibited higher equilibrium swelling ratio at room temperature. All these properties might be attributed to the incorporation of polyamidoamine dendrimer G6-NH2, which forms water-releasing channels and increases the hydrophilicity of PNIPA network. The novel hydrogels have potential applications in drug and gene delivery.  相似文献

Natural, biosynthesized poly(gamma-glutamic acid) (γ-PGA) was crosslinked using dihalogenoalkanes yielding hydrogels with various features. Crosslinking reactions of the polymer and swelling of the hydrogels were studied. Various reaction parameters, like temperature and catalyst content, were adjusted to give highest yields in the network production. Swelling of the hydrogels showed dramatic changes when varying experimental conditions such as the molecular weight of γ-PGA, the nature and concentration of the crosslinker, and the solution used for the swelling (ionic strength, pH). © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献
