A series of perfluorocyclobutyl (PFCB) aryl ether‐based amphiphilic diblock copolymers containing hydrophilic poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and fluorophilic poly(p‐(2‐(p‐tolyloxy)perfluorocyclobutoxy)phenyl methacrylate) segments were synthesized via successive atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). 2‐MBP‐initiated and CuBr/N,N,N,N,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine‐catalyzed ATRP homopolymerization of the PFCB‐containing methacrylate monomer, p‐(2‐(p‐tolyloxy)perfluorocyclobutoxy)phenyl methacrylate, can be performed in a controlled mode as confirmed by the fact that the number‐average molecular weights (Mn) increased linearly with the conversions of the monomer while the polydispersity indices kept below 1.38. The block copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.36) were synthesized by ATRP using Br‐end‐functionalized poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) (PtBA) as macroinitiator followed by the acidolysis of hydrophobic PtBA block into hydrophilic PAA segment. The critical micelle concentrations of the amphiphilic diblock copolymers in different surroundings were determined by fluorescence spectroscopy using N‐phenyl‐1‐naphthylamine as probe. The morphology and size of the micelles were investigated by transmission electron microscopy and dynamic laser light scattering, respectively. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel block–graft copolymers [poly(styrene‐b‐ethylene‐co‐butylene‐b‐styrene)‐g‐poly(tert‐butyl acrylate)] were synthesized by the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of tert‐butyl acrylate (tBA) with chloromethylated poly(styrene‐b‐ethylene‐co‐butylene‐b‐styrene) (SEBS) as a macromolecular initiator. The copolymers were composed of triblock SEBS as the backbone and tBA as grafts attached to the polystyrene end blocks. The macromolecular initiator (chloromethylated SEBS) was prepared by successive hydrogenation and chloromethylation of SEBS. The degree of chloromethylation, ranging from 1.6 to 36.5 mol % according to the styrene units in SEBS, was attained with adjustments in the amount of SnCl4 and the reaction time with a slight effect on the monodispersity of the starting material (SEBS). The ATRP mechanism of the copolymerization was supported by the kinetic data and the linear increase in the molecular weights of the products with conversion. The graft density was controlled with changes in the functionality of the chloromethylated SEBS. The average length of the graft chain, ranging from a few repeat units to about two hundred, was adjusted with changes in the reaction time and alterations in the initiator/catalyst/ligand molar ratio. Incomplete initiation was detected at a low conversion; moreover, for initiators with low functionality, sluggish initiation was overcome with suitable reaction conditions. The block–graft copolymers were hydrolyzed into amphiphilic ones containing poly(acrylic acid) grafts. The aggregation behavior of the amphiphilic copolymers was studied with dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy, and the aggregates showed a variety of morphologies. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel side‐chain liquid crystalline ABC triblock copolymers composed of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), polystyrene (PS), and poly[6‐(4‐methoxy‐4′‐oxy‐azobenzene) hexyl methacrylate] (PMMAZO) were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using CuBr/1,1,4,7,7‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as a catalyst system. First, the bromine‐terminated diblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐polystyrene (PEO‐PS‐Br) was prepared by the ATRP of styrene initiated with the macro‐initiator PEO‐Br, which was obtained from the esterification of PEO and 2‐bromo‐2‐methylpropionyl bromide. An azobenzene‐containing block of PMMAZO with different molecular weights was then introduced into the diblock copolymer by a second ATRP to synthesize the novel side‐chain liquid crystalline ABC triblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐polystyrene‐block‐poly[6‐(4‐methoxy‐4′‐oxy‐azobenzene) hexyl methacrylate] (PEO‐PS‐PMMAZO). These block copolymers were characterized using proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and gel permeation chromatograph (GPC). Their thermotropic phase behaviors were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscope (POM). These triblock copolymers exhibited a smectic phase and a nematic phase over a relatively wide temperature range. At the same time, the photoresponsive properties of these triblock copolymers in chloroform solution were preliminarily studied. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of well‐defined centipede‐like copolymers with poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) as main chain and poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) and polystyrene (PSt) as side chains have been synthesized successfully by combination of ring‐opening polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The synthetic process includes three steps. (1) Synthesis of PGMA via ATRP; (2) preparation of macroinitiator with one bromine group and a hydroxyl group at every GMA unit of PGMA; (3) ring‐opening polymerization of LLA and ATRP of St to obtain the asymmetric centipede‐like copolymers. The number–average degrees of polymerization of PGMA backbone, PLLA and PSt side chains were determined by 1H‐NMR spectra, and the molecular weights of the resultant intermediates and centipede‐like copolymers were measured by gel permeation chromatography. The molecular weight distributions were narrow and the molecular weights of both the backbone and the side chains were controllable. The thermal behavior of the centipede‐like copolymers was investigated by differential scanning calorimeter. With the increase of PSt side chain length, the glass transition temperature of PLLA side chains shifted to high temperature, and crystallization ability of PLLA side chains became poor. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel and well‐defined pyrene‐containing eight‐arm star‐shaped dendrimer‐like copolymers were successfully achieved by combination of esterification, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), divergent reaction, ring‐opening polymerization (ROP), and coupling reaction on the basis of pentaerythritol. The reaction of pentaerythritol with 2‐bromopropionyl bromide permitted ATRP of styrene (St) to form four‐arm star‐shaped polymer (PSt‐Br)4. The molecular weights of these polymers could be adjusted by the variation of monomer conversion. Eight‐hydroxyl star‐shaped polymer (PSt‐(OH)2)4 was produced by the divergent reaction of (PSt‐Br)4 with diethanolamine. (PSt‐(OH)2)4 was used as the initiator for ROP of ε‐caprolactone (CL) to produce eight‐arm star‐shaped dendrimer‐like copolymer (PSt‐b‐(PCL)2)4. The molecular weights of (PSt‐b‐(PCL)2)4 increased linearly with the increase of monomer. After the coupling reaction of hydroxyl‐terminated (PSt‐b‐(PCL)2)4 with 1‐pyrenebutyric acid, pyrene‐containing eight‐arm star‐shaped dendrimer‐like copolymer (PSt‐b‐(PCL‐pyrene)2)4 was obtained. The eight‐arm star‐shaped dendrimer‐like copolymers presented unique thermal properties and crystalline morphologies, which were different from those of linear poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL). Fluorescence analysis indicated that (PSt‐b‐(PCL‐pyrene)2)4 presented slightly stronger fluorescence intensity than 1‐pyrenebutyric acid when the pyrene concentration of them was the same. The obtained pyrene‐containing eight‐arm star‐shaped dendrimer‐like copolymer has potential applications in biological fluorescent probe, photodynamic therapy, and optoelectronic devices. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of well‐defined double hydrophilic double‐grafted copolymers, consisting of polyacrylate backbone, hydrophilic poly(2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) and poly(ethylene glycol) side chains, were synthesized by successive atom transfer radical polymerization. The backbone, poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate] (PPEGMEA) comb copolymer, was firstly prepared by ATRP of PEGMEA macromonomer via the grafting‐through route followed by reacting with lithium diisopropylamide and 2‐bromopropionyl chloride to give PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator of ATRP. Finally, poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate]‐g‐poly(2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) graft copolymers were synthesized by ATRP of 2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate using PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator via the grafting‐from route. Poly(2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) side chains were connected to polyacrylate backbone through stable C? C bonds instead of ester connections, which is tolerant of both acidic and basic environment. The molecular weights of both backbone and side chains were controllable and the molecular weight distributions kept relatively narrow (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.39). The results of fluorescence spectroscopy, dynamic laser light scattering and transmission electron microscopy showed this double hydrophilic copolymer was stimuli‐responsive to both pH and salinity. It can aggregate to form reversible micelles in basic surroundings which can be conveniently dissociated with the addition of salt at room temperature. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new facile method for preparation of an amphiphilic block copolymer via a one‐pot sequential atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) on solid support was developed. As a model homopolymerization for the solid‐supported block copolymerization, ATRPs of MMA and HEMA in toluene and in 2‐butanone/1‐propanol solvent system were carried out, respectively. Crosslinked polystyrene beads bearing 2‐bromoisobutyrate moieties successfully initiated the polymerizations of MMA and HEMA in controlled manner. On the basis of the successful results, the one‐pot synthesis of amphiphilic block copolymer by changing the reaction medium was performed. After the ATRP of MMA in toluene at 90 °C for 1 h, the poly(MMA) formed on the beads were washed by continuous flow of 2‐butanone/1‐propanol under nitrogen with the aid of a glass filter in a U‐shaped glass vessel. Then, 2‐butanone/1‐propanol, copper chloride (I), 2,2′‐bipyridyl, and HEMA were added and heated at 50 °C for 48 h with shaking the vessel, followed by treatment with trifluoroacetic acid to isolate the well‐defined amphiphilic block copolymer, poly(MMA‐b‐HEMA). These demonstrated the feasibility of the present strategy for well‐defined synthesis of amphiphilic block copolymers via a one‐pot procedure. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of a new family of amphiphilic multiblock and triblock copolymers is described. The synthetic methodology rests on the preparation of telechelic multifunctional and difunctional chain transfer agents easily available in two synthetic steps from commercially available polydimethylsiloxane‐containing starting materials. Telechelic polymers thus synthesized are used as macromolecular chain transfer agents in the reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of N,N‐dimethylacrylamide (DMA) enabling the synthesis of (AB)n‐type multiblock and ABA‐type triblock copolymers of varying compositions possessing monomodal molecular weight distribution. (AB)n multiblock copolymers [(PDMA‐b‐PDMS)n] were prepared with between 52 and 95 wt % poly(dimethylacrylamide) with number average molecular weights (Mn) between 14,000 and 86,000 (polydispersities of 1.20–2.30). On the other hand, ABA block copolymers with DMA led to amphiphilic block copolymers (PDMA‐b‐PDMS‐b‐PDMA) with Mn values between 9000 and 44,000 (polydispersities of 1.24–1.62). © Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New Y‐shaped (AB2‐type) amphiphilic copolymers of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with poly(trimethylene carbonate) (PTMC), PEG‐b‐(PTMC)2, were successfully synthesized by the ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of TMC with bishydroxy‐modified monomethoxy‐PEG (mPEG). First, a bishydroxy functional ROP initiator was synthesized by esterification of acryloyl bromide with mPEG, followed by Michael addition using excess diethanolamine. A series of Y‐shaped amphiphilic PEG‐(PTMC)2 block copolymers were obtained via ROP of TMC using this PEG with bishydroxyl end groups as macroinitiator and ZnEt2 as catalyst. The amphiphilic block copolymers with different compositions were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and 1H NMR, and their molecular weight was measured by GPC. The results showed that the molecular weight of Y‐shaped copolymers increased with the increase of the molar ratio of TMC to mPEG‐(OH)2 initiator in feed while the PEG chain length was kept constant. The Y‐shaped copolymer mPEG‐(PTMC)2 could self‐assemble into micelles in aqueous medium and the critical micelle concentration values of the micelles decrease with increase in hydrophobic PTMC block length of mPEG‐(PTMC)2. The in vitro cytotoxicity and controlled drug release properties of the Y‐shaped amphiphilic block copolymers were also investigated. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of ferrocene‐based well‐defined amphiphilic graft copolymers, consisting of hydrophilic poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate] (PPEGMEA) backbone and hydrophobic poly(2‐acryloyloxyethyl ferrocenecarboxylate) (PAEFC) side chains were synthesized by successive single‐electron‐transfer living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The backbone was prepared by SET‐LRP of PEGMEA macromonomer, and it was then treated with lithium di‐isopropylamide and 2‐bromopropionyl bromide at ?78 °C to give PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator. The targeted well‐defined graft copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.32) were synthesized via ATRP of AEFC initiated by PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator, and the molecular weights of the backbone and side chains were both controllable. The electro‐chemical behaviors of graft copolymers were studied by cyclic voltammetry, and it was found that graft copolymers were more difficult to be oxidized, and the reversibility of electrode process became less with raising the content of PAEFC segment. The effects of the preparation method, the length of hydrophobic PAEFC segment, and the initial water content on self‐assembly behavior of PPEGMEA‐g‐PAEFC graft copolymers in aqueous media were investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The morphologies of micelles could transform from cylinders to spheres or rods with changing the preparation condition and the length of side chains. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Controlled and very rapid ambient temperature polymerization of tert‐butyl acrylate (tBA) via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and single electron transfer living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) conditions is reported. Two initiators, one that would generate a secondary radical and another that would generate a primary radical, upon activation, are used. A very active catalyst CuBr/Me6TREN was found to initiate rapid polymerization whether it was the primary or the secondary initiator. The polymerization was well controlled and very rapid. The initiator that produces secondary initiating site is found to result in more rapid polymerization than the one that produces primary initiating site. To explore the possibility of rapid ambient temperature polymerization through the SET‐LRP mechanism, the polymerization was also carried out in the presence of DMSO. It was found that the polymerization was much faster compared to the bulk ATRP, without loss of control. Styrene was block copolymerized from PtBA macroinitiators and vice versa. In both the cases, block copolymers with controlled molecular weights were obtained. The tBA block of the polymer was selectively hydrolyzed to get amphiphilic block copolymers. This amphiphilic block copolymer was found to be useful in preparing stable cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticulate dispersion. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel amphiphilic A14B7 multimiktoarm star copolymers composed of 14 poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) arms and 7 poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) arms with β‐cyclodextrin (β‐CD) as core moiety were synthesized by the combination of controlled ring‐opening polymerization (CROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). 14‐Arm star PCL homopolymers (CDSi‐SPCL) were first synthesized by the CROP of CL using per‐6‐(tert‐butyldimethylsilyl)‐β‐CD as the multifunctional initiator in the presence of Sn(Oct)2 at 125 °C. Subsequently, the hydroxyl end groups of CDSi‐SPCL were blocked by acetyl chloride. After desilylation of the tert‐butyldimethylsilyl ether groups from the β‐CD core, 7 ATRP initiating sites were introduced by treating with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide, which further initiated ATRP of tert‐butyl acrylate (tBA) to prepare well‐defined A14B7 multimiktoarm star copolymers [CDS(PCL‐PtBA)]. Their molecular structures and physical properties were in detail characterized by 1H NMR, SEC‐MALLS, and DSC. The selective hydrolysis of tert‐butyl ester groups of the PtBA block gave the amphiphilic A14B7 multimiktoarm star copolymers [CDS(PCL‐PAA)]. These amphiphilic copolymers could self‐assemble into multimorphological aggregates in aqueous solution, which were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Four generations of new amphiphilic thermoresponsive linear‐dendritic block copolymers (LDBCs) with a linear poly(N‐vinylcaprolactam) (PNVCL) block and a dendritic poly(benzyl ether) block are synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of N‐vinylcaprolactam (NVCL) using dendritic poly(benzyl ether) chlorides as initiators. The copolymers have been characterized by 1H NMR, FTIR, and GPC showing controlled molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution (PDI ≤ 1.25). Their self‐organization in aqueous media and thermoresponsive property are highly dependent on the generation of dendritic poly(benzyl ether) block. It is observed for the LDBCs that the self‐assembled morphology changes from irregularly spherical micelles, vesicles, rod‐like large compound vesicles (LCVs), to the coexistence of spherical micelles and rod‐like LCVs, as the generation of the dendritic poly(benzyl ether) increases. The results of a cytotoxicity study using an MTT assay method with L929 cells show that the LDBCs are biocompatible. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Novel and well‐defined dendrimer‐star, block‐comb polymers were successfully achieved by the combination of living ring‐opening polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization on the basis of a dendrimer polyester. Star‐shaped dendrimer poly(?‐caprolactone)s were synthesized by the bulk polymerization of ?‐caprolactone with a dendrimer initiator and tin 2‐ethylhexanoate as a catalyst. The molecular weights of the dendrimer poly(?‐caprolactone)s increased linearly with an increase in the monomer. The dendrimer poly(?‐caprolactone)s were converted into macroinitiators via esterification with 2‐bromopropionyl bromide. The star‐block copolymer dendrimer poly(?‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) was obtained by the atom transfer radical polymerization of 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate. The molecular weights of these copolymers were adjusted by the variation of the monomer conversion. Then, dendrimer‐star, block‐comb copolymers were prepared with poly(L ‐lactide) blocks grafted from poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) blocks by the ring‐opening polymerization of L ‐lactide. The unique and well‐defined structure of these copolymers presented thermal properties that were different from those of linear poly(?‐caprolactone). © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The backbone was first prepared by SET‐LRP of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate macromonomer using CuBr/tris(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl)amine as catalytic system. The obtained comb copolymer was treated with lithium diisopropylamide and 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide to give PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator. The diblock copolymers of polystyrene and poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) (PSt‐b‐PtBA) with various molecular weights and hydrophobic/hydrophilic (styrene/acrylic acid) chain length were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Selective hydrolysis of the diblock copolymers (PSt‐b‐PtBA) resulted in amphiphilic block copolymers of polystyrene and poly(acrylic acid) (PSt‐b‐PAA). The amphiphilic block copolymers of PSt‐b‐PAA with average molecular weight (Mn) <7500 were proved to be critical in dispersing the pigments of UV curable ink‐jet inks for manufacturing the color filter. Incorporating DB2 diblock copolymer dispersants with styrene/acrylic acid ratio at 1.5 allowed more UV curable compositions in the red and blue inks without deteriorating pigment dispersing stability and jetting properties of the ink‐jet inks. The ink drops can be precisely ejected into the tiny color area. Better properties of the cured red stripe such as nanoindentation hardness and chemical resistance were found. The competing absorption of UV light by the blue pigment hindered the through cure of monomers near the interface between glass substrate and the blue stripe. This leads to lower hardness and poor chemical resistance of the UV cured blue stripe. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 43: 3337–3353, 2005  相似文献

A new kind of dendronized polymer brush with metallo‐supramolecular polymer side chains was fabricated by a combination of macromonomer and graft‐to approach. The alternating copolymers of maleic anhydride and styryl macromonomers pendant with Fréchet‐type dendrons of three generations were reported previously. In this article, terpyridine groups were introduced along the backbone of the dendronized polymers through the amidolysis of anhydride groups. The terpyridine functionalized PEO linear chains were then incorporated through the complexation of terpyridine and Ru(II) ion. Thus, dendronized polymer brushes with amphiphilic properties were synthesized. AFM analysis showed worm‐like single molecular morphologies of the polymers of three generations, and 1H NMR analysis indicated that such molecular brushes had an amphiphilic nature in solution. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Ethyl cellulose graft poly(poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate) (EC‐g‐P(PEGMA)) amphiphilic copolymers were synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, and gel permeation chromatography. Reaction kinetics analysis indicated that the graft copolymerization is living and controllable. The self‐assembly and thermosensitive property of the obtained EC‐g‐P(PEGMA) amphiphilic copolymers in water were investigated by dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and transmittance. It was found that the EC‐g‐P(PEGMA) amphiphilic copolymers can self‐assemble into spherical micelles in water. The size of the micelles increases with the increase of the side chain length. The spherical micelles show thermosensitive properties with a lower critical solution temperature around 65 °C, which almost independent on the graft density and the length of the side chains. The obtained EC‐g‐P(PEGMA) graft copolymers have both the unique properties of poly(ethylene glycol) and cellulose, which may have the potential applications in biomedicine and biotechnology. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of well‐defined rod‐coil PAA‐b‐DPS block copolymers, containing Fréchet‐type dendronized polystyrene (DPS) with different generation as a rod‐like hydrophobic block and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) as a hydrophilic coil were synthesized. The procedure included the following steps: the precursor PMA‐b‐DPS copolymer was prepared through ATRP of Fréchet‐type dendritic styrene macromonomer bearing the first to the third generation (G1–G3), respectively, initiated by poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA‐Br). Then, by converting PMA into PAA by subsequent hydrolysis, the targeted amphiphilic copolymers were obtained. Moreover, by using the rod‐coil amphiphiles as building blocks, large compound micelles and vesicles were formed in a binary solvent mixture of DMF/H2O. Morphological changes in self‐assembly showed dependence on the length of the dendronized block.

The first example of well‐controlled atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of a permanently charged anionic acrylamide monomer is reported. ATRP of sodium 2‐acrylamido‐2‐methylpropanesulfonate (NaAMPS) was achieved with ethyl 2‐chloropropionate (ECP) as an initiator and the CuCl/CuCl2/tris(2‐dimethylaminoethyl)amine (Me6TREN) catalytic system. The polymerizations were carried out in 50:50 (v/v) N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF)/water mixtures at 20 °C. Linear first‐order kinetic plots up to a 92% conversion for a target degree of polymerization of 50 were obtained with [ECP]/[CuCl]/[CuCl2]/[Me6TREN] = 1:1:1:2 and [AMPS] = 1 M. The molecular weight increased linearly with the conversion in good agreement with the theoretical values, and the polydispersities decreased with increasing conversion, reaching a lower limit of 1.11. The living character of the polymerization was confirmed by chain‐extension experiments. Block copolymers with N,N‐dimethylacrylamide and N‐isopropylacrylamide were also prepared. The use of a DMF/water mixed solvent should make possible the synthesis of new amphiphilic ionic block copolymers without the use of protecting group chemistry. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
