The solubilization and phase equilibria of w/o microemulsions have been shown to be dependent on two phenomenological parameters, namely the spontaneous curvature and elasticity of the interfacial film, when interfacial tension is very low. The spontaneous curvature of an interface is basically determined by the geometric packing of surfactant and cosurfactant molecules at the interface, whereas the interfacial elasticity is related to the energy required to bend the interface. The droplet size and solubilization of microemulsions is mainly determined by the radius of spontaneous curvature, and is further influenced by interfacial elasticity and interdroplet interactions. A w/o microemulsion with a highly curved and relatively rigid interfacial film can exist in equilibrium with excess water at the solubilization limit due to the interfacial bending stress. Increasing the natural radius and fluidity of the interface can increase the droplet size and hence the solubilization in the microemulsion. On the other hand, a w/o microemulsion with a highly fluid interfacial film can exist in equilibrium with an excess oil phase containing a low density of microemulsion droplets due to attractive interdroplet interaction. Increasing the interfacial rigidity and decreasing the natural radius in this case can increase water solubilization in the microemulsion by retarding the phase separation process. Thus, a maximum water solubilization in a w/o microemulsion can be obtained by minimizing both the interfacial bending stress of rigid interfaces and the attractive interdroplet interaction of fluid interfaces at an optimal interfacial curvature and elasticity. The study of phase equilibria of microemulsions can serve as a simple method to evaluate the property of the interface and provide phenomenological guidance for the formulation of microemulsions with maximum solubilization capacity.

This paper is focused on the influence of polystyrene (PS)-poly(1,4-butadiene) (PB)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) triblock terpolymers on the w/o microemulsion of the pseudo-ternary system water/sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS)/xylene-pentanol. Despite the insolubility of the copolymer in water as well as in the xylene-pentanol mixture, it can be incorporated into the w/o microemulsion and interactions between the triblock terpolymer molecules and the anionic surfactant headgroups can be detected by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements. Furthermore, dynamic light scattering measurements were used to determine the aggregate diameter of the modified microemulsions. For lower polymer concentrations large aggregates between 100 and 500 nm can be observed. Surprisingly, at a higher terpolymer concentration of 5 wt%, significant smaller aggregate diameters can be identified by dynamic light scattering and Cryo-SEM. One can conclude that the copolymers are incorporated in the inverse microemulsion droplets, where the PB blocks cover the water droplets. The thermally induced radical cross-linking of the butadiene units in the presence of azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) leads then to covalently closed nanocapsules with an average size of 10 nm.

A series of microemulsions, both W/O and O/W, based on nonionic surfactants of the form (NP(EO)n), were prepared using the titration method. Mixing a constant weight of surfactant with a constant volume of the dispersed phase and an initial volume of continuous phase produces an emulsion, which is titrated to clarity with another surfactant (cosurfactant). Plotting (a) the volume of cosurfactant necessary to transform an emulsion into a microemulsion containing a fixed volume of dispersed phase and constant weight of surfactant versus (b) different initial continuous-phase volumes yields a straight line. Extrapolating from experimentally determined values for the cosurfactant volume to the value corresponding to a zero-volume continuous phase allows the determination of the surfactant molar composition and the average number of ethylene oxides (EO) per nonylphenol adsorbed at the interface. Using a surfactant with the same number of ethylene oxides yields a single-surfactant microemulsion. Measurement of surfactants transmittance in the oil and water phases demonstrates that microemulsification occurs when the surfactant interfacial film is equally soluble in the two phases. Surface pressure measurements reveal that oil penetration impedes formation of O/W microemulsions with n-tetradecane or n-hexadecane as dispersed phase. Conductance, particle size, and transmittance measurements show that above a certain dispersed-phase volume percolation of the microemulsion occurs.

Microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC) is an electrodriven separation technique. Separations are generally achieved using microemulsions consisting of surfactant-coated nanometer-sized oil droplets suspended in aqueous buffer. A cosurfactant such as a short-chain alcohol is generally used to stabilize the microemulsion. This review summarizes the various microemulsion types and compositions that have been used in MEEKC. The effects of key-operating variables such as surfactant type and concentration, cosurfactant type and concentration, buffer pH and type, oil type and concentration, use of organic solvent and cyclodextrin additions, and temperature are described. Specific examples of water-in-oil microemulsions and chirally selective separations are also covered.

The mechanism of silica particle formation in monomer microemulsions is studied using dynamic light scattering (DLS), atomic force microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and conductivity measurements. The hydrolysis of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) in methylmethacrylate (MMA) microemulsions (MMA = methylmethacrylate) is compared with the formation of SiO2 particles in heptane microemulsions. Stable microemulsions without cosurfactant were found for MMA, the nonionic surfactant Marlophen NP10, and aqueous ammonia (0.75 wt%). In the one-phase region of the ternary phase diagram, the water/surfactant ratio (R w) could be varied from 6 to 18. The DLS and SAXS measurements show that reverse micelles form in these water-in-oil (w/o) microemulsions. The minimum water-to-surfactant molar ratio required for micelle formation was determined. Particle formation is achieved from the base-catalyzed hydrolysis of TEOS. According to atomic force microscopy measurements of particles isolated from the emulsion, the particle size can be effectively tailored in between 20 and 60 nm by varying R w from 2–6 in heptane w/o microemulsions. For MMA-based microemulsions, the particle diameter ranges from 25 to 50 nm, but the polydispersity is higher. Tailoring of the particle size is not achieved with R w, but adjusting the particle growth period produces particles between 10 and 70 nm.

Microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC) is an electrodriven separation technique. Separations are typically achieved using oil-in-water microemulsions, which are composed of nanometre-sized droplets of oil suspended in aqueous buffer. The oil droplets are coated in surfactant molecules and the system is stabilised by the addition of a short-chain alcohol cosurfactant. The novel use of water-in-oil microemulsions for MEEKC separations has also been investigated recently. This report summarises the different microemulsion types and compositions used to-date and their applications with a focus on recent papers (2002-2004). The effects of key operating variables (pH, surfactant, cosurfactant, oil phase, buffer, additives, temperature, organic modifier) and methodology techniques are described.

Fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) has been successfully used to characterise water-in-oil (w/o) microemulsions. The investigated systems were stabilised by sodium bis-2-ethylhexyl sulphosuccinate (AOT) and the measured diffusion times have been related to the radii of the aggregated species, which for some systems, were separately determined by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). We demonstrate that FCS is capable of measuring hydrodynamic radii of microemulsions rapidly and at surfactant concentrations lower than previously reported for other techniques. FCS was also used to specifically interrogate microemulsion droplets containing a fluorescently-labelled biomolecule, specifically phalloidin, a peptide fungal toxin from Amanita phalloides, and the enzyme -chymotrypsin (-CT). The microemulsion droplets are only marginally increased in size if a small peptide (phalloidin) is included in the water phase, whereas the droplet size is significantly increased when a larger protein (-CT) is included.

The micellization behavior of cetylammonium bromide and its mono-, di-, and trihydroxyethylated head group analogues and water/oil (w/o) microemulsion formation with them have been studied with detailed thermodynamic and structural considerations. The critical micellar concentration, micellar aggregation number, and behavior of the surfactants at the air/solution interface have been studied in detail. The results have been analyzed and discussed. The formation of the w/o microemulsion stabilized by the aforesaid surfactants in conjunction with the cosurfactant n-hexanol in isooctane has been investigated by the dilution method. The energetics of the transfer of cosurfactant from oil to the interface has been estimated. The structural parameters, namely, droplet dimension, droplet number, and population of surfactant and cosurfactant on the droplet surface, have also been estimated. The efficacy of the surfactants in respect to water dispersion in oil and cosurfactant concentration level at the oil/water interface has been worked out. Such microemulsions are prospective compartmentalized systems to assist enzyme activities. In this respect, the trihydroxyethylated head group analogue in the above series has been found to be a better performer for the preparation and stabilization of microemulsions that has correlated well with its performance than the others in the hydrolysis of p-nitrophenyl-n-hexanoate by the enzyme Chromobacterium viscosum lipase.

ZnS nanoparticles were synthesized in four component "water in oil" microemulsions formed by a cationic surfactant (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB), a cosurfactant (pentanol or butanol), n-hexane and water. The effect of various parameters (nature of cosurfactant, water/surfactant W(0), and alcohol/surfactant P(0)) on the formation and stability of ZnS nanoparticles was investigated thoroughly. UV-Vis spectroscopy was employed to directly follow the formation of ZnS systems in the microemulsions. Thus, particle size was estimated from the position of the first excitonic transition by employing an approximate finite-depth equation and an empirical correlation, giving average diameters in the ranges 2.3-2.5 and 3.0-3.5nm, respectively. Stable ZnS nanoparticles were obtained by employing low water and high cosurfactant amounts. This suggests that at high concentration the cosurfactant molecules act as capping agents on the surface of the inverse micelles, while low water amounts are needful to obtain water droplets with a radius close to that of the interfacial film spontaneous curvature. HRTEM analysis showed that the samples are formed by a few crystalline ZnS nanoparticles of spherical shape, embedded in and amorphous organic matrix, with a coherent scattering domain between 2 and 4nm.

The factors influencing the formation of water-in-134a-propellant microemulsions using the fluorinated ionic surfactants ammonium perfluorooctanoate, ammonium perfluoroheptanoate, and sodium perfluorooctanoate has been determined. None of the fluorinated ionic surfactants could be used to prepare clear, one-phase systems when used as sole surfactant, but they could be when combined with a short-chain fluoro- or hydrocarbon alcohol in surfactant:cosurfactant weight-mixing ratios (K(m)) in the range 1:2 to 2:1. When hydrocarbon alcohols were used this clear region extended over a wide range of compositions and was confirmed by means of photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS) to contain microemulsion droplets in the propellant-rich part of the phase diagram. PCS studies performed in the presence of the water-soluble drug terbutaline sulfate showed that it was possible to solubilize the drug within water-in-propellant microemulsion droplets. These studies confirm for the first time that it is possible to prepare water-in-propellant 134a microemulsions using fluorinated ionic surfactants and to solubilize water-soluble drugs within these systems.

Release of nortriptyline hydrochloride from oil-water microemulsions
The release of nortritptyline hydrochloride from oil-in-water (o/w) microemulsions (isopropyl myristate as oil, propylene glycol as cosurfactant, polysorbate 80 as surfactant and phosphate buffer, pH 7.4, as the continuous phase) containing increasing concentrations of polyethylene glycol 400, used to facilitate the diffusion of a drug from the inner oily phase of the microemulsion to the outer aqueous phase of such a dispersion system, was studied by determining the permeability constants of the drug through hydrophilic and lipophilic membranes separating the o/w microemulsions from the receiving aqueous phase (phosphate buffer pH 7.4). The permeability of nortriptyline hydrochloride from microemulsions through the lipophilic membrane increased as the concentration of polyethylene glycol 400 in the disperse system increased. The apparent permeability constant for nortriptyline hydrochloride, from the microemulsion without polyethylene glycol, was 1.36 x 10(-3) cm x h(-1), it increased up to 7.80 x 10(-3) cm x h(-1) in the presence of polyethylene glycol at a concentration of 50% (v/v) of the initial volume of the aqueous phase.

(1)H NMR relaxation and diffusion studies were performed on water-in-CO(2) (W/C) microemulsion systems formed with phosphorus fluorosurfactants of bis[2-(F-hexyl)ethyl] phosphate salts (DiF(8)), having different counterions (Na(+), NH(4)(+), N(CH(3))(4)(+)) by means of high-pressure in situ NMR. Water has a low solubility in CO(2) and is mainly solubilized by the microemulsion droplets formed with surfactants added to CO(2) and water mixtures. There is rapid exchange of water between the bulk CO(2) and the microemulsion droplets; however, NMR relaxation measurements show that the entrapped water has restricted motion, and there is little "free" water in the core. Counterions entrapped by the droplets are mostly associated with the surfactant headgroups: diffusion measurements show that counterions and the surfactant molecules move together with a diffusion coefficient that is associated with the droplet. The outer shell of the microemulsion droplets consists of the surfactant tails with some associated CO(2). For W/C microemulsions formed with the phosphate-based surfactant having the ammonia counterion (A-DiF(8)), the (1)H NMR signal for NH(4)(+) shows a much larger diffusion coefficient than that of the surfactant tails. This apparent paradox is explained on the basis of proton exchange between water and the ammonium ion. The observed dependence of the relaxation time (T(2)) on W(0) (mole ratio of water to surfactant in the droplets) for water and NH(4)(+) can also be explained by this exchange model. The average hydrodynamic radius of A-DiF(8) microemulsion droplets estimated from NMR diffusion measurements (25 degrees C, 206 bar, W(0) = 5) was R(h) = 2.0 nm. Assuming the theoretical ratio of R(g)/R(h) = 0.775 for a solid sphere, where R(g) is the radius of gyration, the equivalent hydrodynamic radius from SANS is R(h) = 1.87 nm. The radii measured by the two techniques are in reasonable agreement, as the two techniques are weighted to measure somewhat different parts of the micelle structure.

A kinetic study was carried out on various solvolytic reactions in water/ NH4OT /isooctane microemulsions. The NH4OT surfactant is a derivative of the sodium salt of bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (NaOT or AOT), where the Na+ counterion has been replaced by NH4+. The counterion substitution effects the phase diagram of the system, and therefore, NH4OT-based microemulsions with high water content reaching values of W = 350 (W = [H2O]/[NH4OT]) can be obtained. The presence of high W values suggests a transition in the microemulsion microstructure from water-in-oil (w/o) to oil-in-water (o/w), as was confirmed by conductivity and 1H NMR self-diffusion measurements. The interpretation of the kinetic studies in terms of pseudophase formalism allows us to analyze the effect of the microemulsion on chemical reactivity, regardless of its microstructure. It has been confirmed that the values of the solvolytic rate constants at the interphase of oil-in-water microemulsions are similar to those obtained for aqueous SDS systems, showing that the hydration degree of the interphase of the oil-in-water microemulsions is independent of W. The influence of the surfactant counterion on the solvolytic rate constants was analyzed by comparing HOT-, NaOT-, and NH4OT-based microemulsions. An important influence on the rate constants caused by the changes in the structural properties of water has been observed as was confirmed by the water 1H NMR signals.

A variety of quaternary and ternary systems of the type of dodecane/aliphatic alcohols/Na-dodecyl sulphate/water or a water-replacing component (formamide, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, propylene carbonate, dimethylsulfoxide, acetonitrile) were subjected to a comparative analysis of microemulsification. The compositions of the systems of the type of oil/surfactant/cosurfactant/water or nonaqueous liquid were changed with respect to surfactant (Na-dodecyl sulfate and triton X 114) concentration, cosurfactant (homologous aliphatic alcohols) concentration and mixing ratio of water and water-replacing component. The appertaining phase diagrams were plotted and compared with those of aqueous systems. The experimental results suggest that the phase regions, which are designated as nonaqueous microemulsions, probably represent, not only microemulsions in the usual sense, but a separate kind of mixed phase whose microstructure is examined by special studies. Analogously to aqueous microemulsion systems, transparency and spontaneous formation of homogeneous multicomponent systems cannot serve as the sole criteria for waterless microemulsion formation. But they are important guiding properties of microemulsion formation in multicomponent systems. The variety of components involved in the chemical composition and the current insufficient knowledge do not permit to generally decide whether nonaqueous systems can be assigned to microemulsions or to molecular solutions. For clarifying this problem a detailed examination of the miscibility behavior, especially that of binary systems as a function of temperature, and the role that surfactant and cosurfactant play in the formation of homogeneous systems will be necessary.
