A new route to the phosphindole system

A new and possibly general route to the hitherto relatively inaccessible simple substituted phosphindoles, utilizing the extreme readiness of simple phosphole sulfides to undergo Diels-Alder dimerization, is described. The synthesis reported here is that of 3,6-dimethyl-l-phenylphosphin-dole sulfide which is prepared in good yield in two simple steps from the readily available 3-methyl-l-phenylphosphole.     

Estimation of Joule heating effect on temperature and pressure distribution in electrokinetic-driven microchannel flows

In this study we present simple analytical models that predict the temperature and pressure variations in electrokinetic-driven microchannel flow under the Joule heating effect. For temperature prediction, a simple model shows that the temperature is related to the Joule heating parameter, autothermal Joule heating parameter, external cooling parameter, Peclet number, and the channel length to channel hydraulic diameter ratio. The simple model overpredicted the thermally developed temperature compared with the full numerical simulation, but in good agreement with the experimental measurements. The factors that affect the external cooling parameters, such as the heat transfer coefficient, channel configuration, and channel material are also examined based on this simple model. Based on the mass conservation, a simple model is developed that predicts the pressure variations, including the temperature effect. An adverse pressure gradient is required to satisfy the mass conservation requirement. The temperature effect on the pressure gradient is via the temperature-dependent fluid viscosity and electroosmotic velocity.     

Applying the concepts of density functional theory to simple systems

Equations are derived for the chemical potential and local hardness of the ground states of helium and the related two electron ions. With these properties it is possible to correct the energies of the simple single‐zeta wave functions to the nearly exact values. The calculations are simple for these simple systems. Oxygenation of Simple Olefins through Selective Allylic C−C Bond Cleavage: A Direct Approach to Cinnamyl Aldehydes

A novel metal‐free allylic C−C σ‐bond cleavage of simple olefins to give valuable cinnamyl aldehydes is reported. 1,2‐Aryl or alkyl migration through allylic C−C bond cleavage occurs in this transformation, which is assisted by an alkyl azide reagent. This method enables O‐atom incorporation into simple unfunctionalized olefins to construct cinnamyl aldehydes. The reaction features simple hydrocarbon substrates, metal‐free conditions, and high regio‐ and stereoselectivity.     

An expeditious and environmentally benign methodology for the synthesis of substituted indoles from cyclic enol ethers and enol lactones

A simple and environmentally friendly method is developed for the synthesis of substituted indoles from commercially available aryl hydrazines and cyclic enol ethers with Montmorillonite-K10 as a heterogeneous catalyst. The catalyst is non-toxic, inexpensive and recyclable and the process is clean, high yielding and operationally simple.     

Interlayer Bond Formation in Black Phosphorus at High Pressure

Black phosphorus was compressed at room temperature across the A17, A7 and simple‐cubic phases up to 30 GPa, using a diamond anvil cell and He as pressure transmitting medium. Synchrotron X‐ray diffraction showed the persistence of two previously unreported peaks related to the A7 structure in the pressure range of the simple‐cubic phase. The Rietveld refinement of the data demonstrates the occurrence of a two‐step mechanism for the A7 to simple‐cubic phase transition, indicating the existence of an intermediate pseudo simple‐cubic structure. From a chemical point of view this study represents a deep insight on the mechanism of interlayer bond formation during the transformation from the layered A7 to the non‐layered simple‐cubic phase of phosphorus, opening new perspectives for the design, synthesis and stabilization of phosphorene‐based systems. As superconductivity is concerned, a new experimental evidence to explain the anomalous pressure behavior of T_c in phosphorus below 30 GPa is provided.     

Chemoselective hydrosilylation of hydroxyketones

A chemoselective method for the hydrosilylation of ketones has been developed, using the combination of triphenylsilane and a catalyst prepared from Ni(COD)₂ and the simple N-heterocyclic carbene IMes. The most notable feature of this method is that free hydroxyls are largely unaffected, thus providing a simple one-step procedure for the conversion of hydroxyketones to mono-protected diols, wherein the protecting group is exclusively installed on the ketone-derived hydroxyl. The process is typically high yielding with both simple ketones and more complex hydroxyketone substrates.     

Microwave-assisted efficient synthesis of azlactone derivatives using TsCl/DMF under solvent-free conditions

A simple and efficient procedure for the synthesis of azlactones employing condensation reaction of aromatic aldehydes with hippuric acid has been developed by using the tosyl chloride (TsCl) and dimethylformamide (DMF) system as condensing agent in the absence of solvents under microwave irradiation. The present protocol is operationally simple and offers several advantages such as high yields, short reaction time, and simple workup.

Tertiary amines promoted synthesis of symmetrical 1,3-disubstituted ureas

Symmetrical 1,3-disubstituted ureas and cyclic ureas have been synthesized from corresponding isocyanates and diisocyanates by a new versatile, simple and quick method in the presence of tertiary amines at room temperature. The method under investigation has several advantages over the existing techniques, as it is simple to carry out; does not require complicated equipment; work-up is simple, as it does not use expensive chemicals. Moreover, the yields are almost quantitative. It has a potential for commercial applications in pharmaceutical chemistry.

Perturbation theory in large order for some elementary systems

Reasons for understanding the general problem of perturbation theory in large order are discussed. It is shown that the behavior of perturbation theory in larger order is generally very simple because it reflects just the semiclassical content of the theory. Many simple examples are given, including some graph-counting problems. The behavior of mass-renormalized perturbation series for some very simple field-theory models is examined. It is shown that mass renormalization hardly affects the large-order behavior of a weak-coupling perturbation series. However, in a strong-coupling perturbation series mass renormalization has a dramatic effect.     

Electrochemical oxidation of alcohols: Part II preparative anodic oxidation of secondary alkanols employing lithium nitrate

The nitrate-mediated oxidation of simple alkanols to the corresponding ketones is described. Except for compounds containing several tertiary hydrogens the procedure is simple to perform and gives clean products in high current yield.     

Proline-catalyzed asymmetric assembly reactions: enzyme-like assembly of carbohydrates and polyketides from three aldehyde substrates

Directed asymmetric assembly of simple achiral building blocks into stereochemically complex molecules like triketides has been described for the first time using l-proline catalyzed asymmetric double aldol reactions. The product pyranoses contain four asymmetric centers constructed under proline catalysis in a highly diastereoselective and modestly enantioselective fashion from three aldehyde molecules. These results suggest that the construction of complex products from simple starting materials is within the realm of organocatalysis involving the simple naturally occurring amino acid l-proline. Our successful assembly of pyranoses from simple aldehydes under proline catalysis suggests that this approach may warrant consideration as a prebiotic route to sugars and polyketides.     

Efficient and Convenient One‐Pot Synthesis of Phosphoramidates and Phosphates

A simple and efficient one‐pot method is described for the synthesis of phosphoramidates/phosphates in excellent yields from dialkylphosphites and trichloroisocyanuric acid in acetonitrile and subsequent treatment with dialkyl amines/alcohols. The procedure is operationally simple, has reduced reaction times, and uses a one‐pot procedure.

A simple procedure for preparing a stable stock reagent an working reagents for the detection and determination of phospholipids is proposed, and a simple, rapid and accurate thin-layer chromatographic technique is suggested. The results obtained for egg yolk phospholipids are presented as an example.     

A simple and convenient procedure for the synthesis of 1-aminophosphonates from aromatic aldehydes

A simple, efficient, possible industrial process has been developed for the synthesis of 1-aminophosphonic acids from simple starting materials. As described below, treatment of aromatic aldehydes with ammonia and reaction with diethyl phosphite gives diethyl N-(arylmethylene)-1-aminoaryl methylphosphonates, which can be easily hydrolyzed to diethyl 1-aminoarylmethylphosphonates. This method is easy, rapid, and good yielding for the synthesis of 1-aminoalkylphosphonates from simple starting materials.     

Highly Efficient Solvent-Free Synthesis of Dihydropyrimidinones Catalyzed by Zinc Oxide

A simple, efficient and practical procedure for the Biginelli reaction using zinc oxid (ZnO) as a novel and reusable catalyst is described under solvent-free conditions in high yields. The use of this agent is characterized by remarkable reactivity, moderate costs, low toxicity and simple work up procedures.
