We give an example of a Banach spaceX such that (i)X * is isometric tol 1, (ii)X is isometric to a subspace ofCθ) and (iii)X is not isomorphic to a complemented subspace of anyC(K) space. This is a part of the first author’s Ph. D. Thesis prepared in the Hebrew University of erusalem under the supervision of the second author.  相似文献

It is shown that ifX is an ℒ⫗ space with separable dual, thenX has a quotient isomorphic toC(ω)α if, and only if, there is anɛ >0, such that theɛ-Szlenk index ofX is at leastα. It was previously known, that ifX is a separable ℒ⫗ space with a non-separable dual, thenX has a quotient isomorphic toC[0, 1]. Research partially supported by NSF Grant MCS-74-07509-A03.  相似文献

We introduce a geometrical property of norm one complemented subspaces ofC(K) spaces which is useful for computing lower bounds on the norms of projections onto subspaces ofC(K) spaces. Loosely speaking, in the dual of such a space ifx* is a w* limit of a net (x a * ) andx*=x*1+x*2 with ‖x*‖=‖x*1‖ + ‖x*2‖, then we measure how efficiently thex a * 's can be split into two nets converging tox*1 andx*2, respectively. As applications of this idea we prove that if for everyε>0,X is a norm (1+ε) complemented subspace of aC(K) space, then it is norm one complemented in someC(K) space, and we give a simpler proof that a slight modification of anl 1-predual constructed by Benyamini and Lindenstrauss is not complemented in anyC(K) space. UniversalC*-algebrasC*(A) exist for certain topological *-algebras called algebras with aC*-enveloping algebra. A Frechet *-algebraA has aC*-enveloping algebra if and only if every operator representation ofA mapsA into bounded operators. This is proved by showing that every unbounded operator representation π, continuous in the uniform topology, of a topological *-algebraA, which is an inverse limit of Banach *-algebras, is a direct sum of bounded operator representations, thereby factoring through the enveloping pro-C*-algebraE(A) ofA. Given aC*-dynamical system (G,A,α), any topological *-algebraB containingC c (G,A) as a dense *-subalgebra and contained in the crossed productC*-algebraC*(G,A,α) satisfiesE(B) =C*(G,A,α). IfG = ℝ, ifB is an α-invariant dense Frechet *-subalgebra ofA such thatE(B) =A, and if the action α onB ism-tempered, smooth and by continuous *-automorphisms: then the smooth Schwartz crossed productS(ℝ,B,α) satisfiesE(S(ℝ,B,α)) =C*(ℝ,A,α). WhenG is a Lie group, theC -elementsC (A), the analytic elementsC ω(A) as well as the entire analytic elementsC є(A) carry natural topologies making them algebras with aC*-enveloping algebra. Given a non-unitalC*-algebraA, an inductive system of idealsI α is constructed satisfyingA =C*-ind limI α; and the locally convex inductive limit ind limI α is anm-convex algebra with theC*-enveloping algebraA and containing the Pedersen idealK a ofA. Given generatorsG with weakly Banach admissible relationsR, we construct universal topological *-algebraA(G, R) and show that it has aC*-enveloping algebra if and only if (G, R) isC*-admissible.  相似文献

In a previous paper (Israel J. Math.28 (1977), 313–324), it was shown that for a certain class of cardinals τ,l 1(τ) embeds in a Banach spaceX if and only ifL 1([0, 1]τ) embeds inX *. An extension (to a rather wider class of cardinals) of the basic lemma of that paper is here applied so as to yield an affirmative answer to a question posed by Rosenthal concerning dual ℒ1-spaces. It is shown that ifZ * is a dual Banach space, isomorphic to a complemented subspace of anL 1-space, and κ is the density character ofZ *, thenl 1(κ) embeds inZ *. A corollary of this result is that every injective bidual Banach space is isomorphic tol (κ) for some κ. The second part of this article is devoted to an example, constructed using the continuum hypothesis, of a compact spaceS which carries a homogeneous measure of type ω1, but which is such thatl 11) does not embed in ℰ(S). This shows that the main theorem of the already mentioned paper is not valid in the case τ = ω1. The dual space ℰ(S)* is isometric to , and is a member of a new isomorphism class of dualL 1-spaces.  相似文献

It is shown here that for any Banach spaceE-valued amart (X n) of classB, almost sure convergence off(Xn) tof(X) for eachf in a total subset ofE * implies scalar convergence toX.  相似文献

LetC 1=(ΣG n ) l 1, where (G n ) is a sequence which is dense (in the Banach-Mazur sense) in the class of all finite dimensional Banach spaces. IfX is a separable Banach space, thenX * is isometric to a subspace ofC 1 * =(ΣG n * ) m which is the range of a contractive projection onC 1 * . Separable Banach spaces whose conjugates are isomorphic toC 1 * are classified as those spaces which contain complemented copies of C1. Applications are that every Banach space has the [metric] approximation property ([m.] a.p., in short) iff (ΣG n * ) m does, and if there is a space failing the m.a.p., thenC 1 can be equivalently normed to fail the m.a.p. A necessary and sufficient condition for an operator fromC(K),K compact metric, into a Banach spaceX to be an isomorphism on a subspace ofC(K) isometric toC 0(ω ω ) is given. We construct, under MA, a non-Hausdorff (T1-)topological extension *ω of ω, such that every function from ω to ω extends uniquely to a continuous function from *ω to *ω. We also show (in ZFC) that for every nontrivial topological extension *X of a countable set X there exists a topology τf on *X, strictly finer than the Star topology, and such that (*X, τf) is still a topological extension of X with the same function extensions *f. This solves two questions raised by M. Di Nasso and M. Forti.  相似文献

LetX(-ϱB m ×C n be a compact set over the unit sphere ϱB m such that for eachz∈ϱB m the fiberX z ={ω∈C n ;(z, ω)∈X} is the closure of a completely circled pseudoconvex domain inC n . The polynomial hull ofX is described in terms of the Perron-Bremermann function for the homogeneous defining function ofX. Moreover, for each point (z 0,w 0)∈Int there exists a smooth up to the boundary analytic discF:Δ→B m ×C n with the boundary inX such thatF(0)=(z 0,w 0). LetC denote the Banach space of scalar-valued continuous functions defined on the closed unit interval. It is proved that ifX is a Banach space andT:C→X is a bounded linear operator withT * X * non-separable, then there is a subspaceY ofC, isometric toC, such thatT|Y is an isomorphism. An immediate consequence of this and a result of A. Pelczynski, is that every complemented subspace ofC with non-separable dual is isomorphic (linearly homeomorphic) toC. Summary Let {X n },n=1,2,..., be a sequence of independent random variables distributed according to a distribution functionF(x) with finite variance,F n (x) be the empiric distribution function ofX 1,...,X n for eachn, andφ (n) * andφ * be optimum stratifications corresponding toF n (x) andF(x) respectively. It is shown in this paper thatφ (a) * tends almost surely toφ * under a suitable criterion. Institute of Statistical Mathematics  相似文献

The weight-spectrumSp(w, X) of a spaceX is the set of weights of all infinite closed subspaces ofX. We prove that ifκ>ω is regular andX is compactT 2 withω(X)κ then some λ withκ≤λ≤2 is inSp(ω, X). Under CH this implies that the weight spectrum of a compact space can not omitω 1, and thus solves problem 22 of [M]. Also, it is consistent with 2ω=c being anything it can be that every countable closed setT of cardinals less thanc withω ∈ T satisfiesSp(w, X)=T for some separable compact LOTSX. This shows the independence from ZFC of a conjecture made in [AT]. Research supported by OTKA grant no. 1908.  相似文献

For a continuous, increasing function ω: R → R \{0} of finite exponential type, this paper introduces the set Z(A, ω) of all x in a Banach space X for which the second order abstract differential equation (2) has a mild solution such that [ω(t)]-1u(t,x) is uniformly continues on R , and show that Z(A, ω) is a maximal Banach subspace continuously embedded in X, where A ∈ B(X) is closed. Moreover, A|z(A,ω) generates an O(ω(t))strongly continuous cosine operator function family.  相似文献

For dynamical systems defined by a covering map of a compact Hausdorff space and the corresponding transfer operator, the associated crossed product C *-algebras C(X) α,ℒℕ introduced by Exel and Vershik are considered. An important property for homeomorphism dynamical systems is topological freeness. It can be extended in a natural way to in general non-invertible dynamical systems generated by covering maps. In this article, it is shown that the following four properties are equivalent: the dynamical system generated by a covering map is topologically free; the canonical embedding of C(X) into C(X) α,ℒℕ is a maximal abelian C *-subalgebra of C(X) α,ℒℕ; any nontrivial two sided ideal of C(X) α,ℒℕ has non-zero intersection with the embedded copy of C(X); a certain natural representation of C(X) α,ℒℕ is faithful. This result is a generalization to non-invertible dynamics of the corresponding results for crossed product C *-algebras of homeomorphism dynamical systems.  相似文献

Let X be a locally compact topological space and (X, E, Xω) be any triple consisting of a hyperfinite set X in a sufficiently saturated nonstandard universe, a monadic equivalence relation E on X, and an E-closed galactic set XωX, such that all internal subsets of Xω are relatively compact in the induced topology and X is homeomorphic to the quotient Xω/E. We will show that each regular complex Borel measure on X can be obtained by pushing down the Loeb measure induced by some internal function X ? *\Bbb CX \rightarrow {}{^{\ast}{\Bbb C}} . The construction gives rise to an isometric isomorphism of the Banach space M(X) of all regular complex Borel measures on X, normed by total variation, and the quotient Mw(X)/M0(X){\cal M}_{\omega}(X)/{\cal M}_0(X) , for certain external subspaces M0(X), Mw(X){\cal M}_0(X), {\cal M}_{\omega}(X) of the hyperfinite dimensional Banach space *\Bbb CX{}{^{\ast}{\Bbb C}}^X , with the norm ‖f‖1 = ∑xX |f(x)|. If additionally X = G is a hyperfinite group, Xω = Gω is a galactic subgroup of G, E is the equivalence corresponding to a normal monadic subgroup G0 of Gω, and G is isomorphic to the locally compact group Gω/G0, then the above Banach space isomorphism preserves the convolution, as well, i.e., M(G) and Mw(G)/M0(G){\cal M}_{\omega}(G)/{\cal M}_0(G) are isometrically isomorphic as Banach algebras.  相似文献

It is proved that ifE is a separable Banach lattice withE′ weakly sequentially complete,F is a Banach space andT:E→F is a bounded linear operator withT′F′ non-separable, then there is a subspaceG ofE, isomorphic toC(Δ), such thatT G is an isomorphism, whereC(Δ) denotes the space of continuous real valued functions on the Cantor discontinuum. This generalizes an earlier result of the second-named author. A number of conditions are proved equivalent for a Banach latticeE to contain a subspace order isomorphic toC(Δ). Among them are the following:L 1 is lattice isomorphic to a sublattice ofE′;C(Δ)′ is lattice isomorphic to a sublattice ofE′; E contains an order bounded sequence with no weak Cauchy subsequence;E has a separable closed sublatticeF such thatF′ does not have a weak order unit.
