In 1957 Robert Ellis proved that a group with a locally compact Hausdorff topology T making all translations continuous also has jointly continuous multiplication and continuous inversion, and is thus a topological group. The theorem does not apply to locally compact asymmetric spaces such as the reals with addition and the topology of upper open rays. We first show a bitopological Ellis theorem, and then introduce a generalization of locally compact Hausdorff, called locally skew compact, and a topological dual, Tk, to obtain the following asymmetric Ellis theorem which applies to the example above:Whenever (X,⋅,T) is a group with a locally skew compact topology making all translations continuous, then multiplication is jointly continuous in both (X,⋅,T) and (X,⋅,Tk), and inversion is a homeomorphism between (X,T) and (X,Tk).This generalizes the classical Ellis theorem, because T=Tk when (X,T) is locally compact Hausdorff.  相似文献

Our paper studies the topology of uniform convergence on compact sets on the space of densely continuous forms (introduced by Hammer and McCoy (1997)), usco and minimal usco maps. We generalize and complete results from Hammer and McCoy (1997) concerning the space D(X,Y) of densely continuous forms from X to Y. Let X be a Hausdorff topological space, (Y,d) be a metric space and D k (X,Y) the topology of uniform convergence on compact sets on D(X,Y). We prove the following main results: D k (X,Y) is metrizable iff D k (X,Y) is first countable iff X is hemicompact. This result gives also a positive answer to question 4.1 of McCoy (1998). If moreover X is a locally compact hemicompact space and (Y,d) is a locally compact complete metric space, then D k (X,Y) is completely metrizable, thus improving a result from McCoy (1998). We study also the question, suggested by Hammer and McCoy (1998), when two compatible metrics on Y generate the same topologies of uniform convergence on compact sets on D(X,Y). The completeness of the topology of uniform convergence on compact sets on the space of set-valued maps with closed graphs, usco and minimal usco maps is also discussed.  相似文献

Let A be a uniformly closed and locally m-convex Φ-algebra. We obtain internal conditions on A stated in terms of its closed ideals for A to be isomorphic and homeomorphic to C k (X), the Φ-algebra of all the real continuous functions on a normal topological space X endowed with the compact convergence topology.  相似文献

A locally compact group is called polythetic if it has a subnormal series with monothetic factors. IfG is a totally disconnected polythetic group then AutG is locally compact in its natural topology and has small invariant neighborhoods. IfG is compact then AutG is compact too.  相似文献

We prove that if X is a locally compact σ-compact space, then on its quotient, γ(X) say, determined by the algebra of all real valued bounded continuous functions on X, the quotient topology and the completely regular topology defined by this algebra are equal. It follows from this that if X is second countable locally compact, then γ(X) is second countable locally compact Hausdorff if and only if it is first countable. The interest in these results originated in [1] and [7] where the primitive ideal space of a C*-algebra was considered.  相似文献

We study final group topologies and their relations to compactness properties. In particular, we are interested in situations where a colimit or direct limit is locally compact, a k ω-space, or locally k ω. As a first application, we show that unitary forms of complex Kac-Moody groups can be described as the colimit of an amalgam of subgroups (in the category of Hausdorff topological groups, and the category of k ω-groups). Our second application concerns Pontryagin duality theory for the classes of almost metrizable topological abelian groups, resp., locally k ω topological abelian groups, which are dual to each other. In particular, we explore the relations between countable projective limits of almost metrizable abelian groups and countable direct limits of locally k ω abelian groups.  相似文献

Letk be a locally compact, totally disconnected, nondiscrete field, and letG be a Lie group overk satisfying suitable conditions which depend on the characteristic ofk. It is shown thatG is compact if it admits a bicontinuous automorphism which is ergodic with respect to Haar measure. A note on closed images of locally compact metric spaces   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary A decomposition theorem about closed images of locally compact metric spaces is discussed. It is shown that a space is a closed image of a locally compact metric space if and only if it is a regular Fréchet space with a point-countable k-network, and each of its closed first-countable subset is locally compact.  相似文献

We prove that the additive group (E*, τ k (E)) of an -Banach space E, with the topology τ k (E) of uniform convergence on compact subsets of E, is topologically isomorphic to a subgroup of the unitary group of some Hilbert space (is unitarily representable). This is the same as proving that the topological group (E*, τ k (E)) is uniformly homeomorphic to a subset of for some κ. As an immediate consequence, preduals of commutative von Neumann algebras or duals of commutative C*-algebras are unitarily representable in the topology of uniform convergence on compact subsets. The unitary representability of free locally convex spaces (and thus of free Abelian topological groups) on compact spaces, follows as well. The above facts cannot be extended to noncommutative von Neumann algebras or general Schwartz spaces. Research partially supported by Spanish Ministry of Science, grant MTM2008-04599/MTM. In this note two results about compact subgroups of locally quasi-convex groups are shown:
  1. The quotient group of a locally quasi convex Hausdorff group modulo a compact subgroup is again locally quasi-convex.
  2. If a subgroup of a locally quasi-convex group is compact in the weak topology, it is also compact in the original topology.

We prove that any projective coadmissible module over the locally analytic distribution algebra of a compact p-adic Lie group is finitely generated. In particular, the category of coadmissible modules does not have enough projectives. In the Appendix a “generalized Robba ring” for uniform pro-p groups is constructed which naturally contains the locally analytic distribution algebra as a subring. The construction uses the theory of generalized microlocalization of quasi-abelian normed algebras that is also developed there. We equip this generalized Robba ring with a selfdual locally convex topology extending the topology on the distribution algebra. This is used to show some results on coadmissible modules.  相似文献

It is shown that the space X[0,1], of continuous maps [0,1]X with the compact-open topology, is not locally compact for any space X having a nonconstant path of closed points. For a T1-space X, it follows that X[0,1] is locally compact if and only if X is locally compact and totally path-disconnected. We study locally compact group topologies on simple and semisimple Lie groups. We show that the Lie group topology on such a group S is very rigid: every “abstract” isomorphism between S and a locally compact and σ-compact group Γ is automatically a homeomorphism, provided that S is absolutely simple. If S is complex, then noncontinuous field automorphisms of the complex numbers have to be considered, but that is all. We obtain similar results for semisimple groups.  相似文献

Let A be a lattice-ordered algebra endowed with a topology compatible with the structure of algebra. We provide internal conditions for A to be isomorphic as lattice-ordered algebras and homeomorphic to Ck(X), the lattice-ordered algebra C(X) of real continuous functions on a completely regular and Hausdorff topological space X, endowed with the topology of uniform convergence on compact sets. As a previous step, we determine this topology among the locally m-convex topologies on C(X) with the property that each order closed interval is bounded.  相似文献

We study the class Wof Hausdorff topological groups Gfor which the following two cardinal invariants coincide

ES(G)=min{|H|:HGdense and essential}

TD(G)=min{|H|:HGtotally dense}

We prove that W contains the following classes:locally compact abelian groups, compact connected groups, countably compact totally discon¬nected abelian groups, topologically simple groups, locally compact Abelian groups when endowed with their Bohr topology, totally minimal abelian groups and free Abelian topological groups. For all these classes we are also able to giv ean explicit computation of the common value of ESand TD.  相似文献

The concepts of k-systems, k-networks and k-covers were defined by A. Arhangel’skii in 1964, P. O’Meara in 1971 and R. McCoy, I. Ntantu in 1985, respectively. In this paper the relationships among k-systems, k-networks and k-covers are further discussed and are established by mk-systems. As applications, some new characterizations of quotients or closed images of locally compact metric spaces are given by means of mk-systems.  相似文献

Lind and Schmidt have shown that for certain ergodic Zk-actions on a compact abelian group Γ, the homoclinic group H is isomorphic to the Pontryagin dual of Γ. Einsiedler and Schmidt extended these results and showed that Γ is a quotient of a locally compact ring R modulo H. In this paper, we present a dynamical interpretation of R if k=1: it is a product of the stable group and the unstable group of Γ, under a suitable topology. As applications, we give a topological interpretation of the Pisot-Vijayaraghavan theorem and we link the results to tessellation theory.  相似文献

The main results of the paper are:
(1)
If X is metrizable but not locally compact topological space, then Ck(X) contains a closed copy of S2, and hence does not have the property AP;
(2)
For any zero-dimensional Polish X, the space Ck(X,2) is sequential if and only if X is either locally compact or the derived set X is compact; and
(3)
All spaces of the form Ck(X,2), where X is a non-locally compact Polish space whose derived set is compact, are homeomorphic, and have the topology determined by an increasing sequence of Cantor subspaces, the nth one nowhere dense in the (n+1)st.

The aim of this paper is to go deeper into the study of local minimality and its connection to some naturally related properties. A Hausdorff topological group (G,τ) is called locally minimal if there exists a neighborhood U of 0 in τ such that U fails to be a neighborhood of zero in any Hausdorff group topology on G which is strictly coarser than τ. Examples of locally minimal groups are all subgroups of Banach-Lie groups, all locally compact groups and all minimal groups. Motivated by the fact that locally compact NSS groups are Lie groups, we study the connection between local minimality and the NSS property, establishing that under certain conditions, locally minimal NSS groups are metrizable. A symmetric subset of an abelian group containing zero is said to be a GTG set if it generates a group topology in an analogous way as convex and symmetric subsets are unit balls for pseudonorms on a vector space. We consider topological groups which have a neighborhood basis at zero consisting of GTG sets. Examples of these locally GTG groups are: locally pseudoconvex spaces, groups uniformly free from small subgroups (UFSS groups) and locally compact abelian groups. The precise relation between these classes of groups is obtained: a topological abelian group is UFSS if and only if it is locally minimal, locally GTG and NSS. We develop a universal construction of GTG sets in arbitrary non-discrete metric abelian groups, that generates a strictly finer non-discrete UFSS topology and we characterize the metrizable abelian groups admitting a strictly finer non-discrete UFSS group topology. Unlike the minimal topologies, the locally minimal ones are always available on “large” groups. To support this line, we prove that a bounded abelian group G admits a non-discrete locally minimal and locally GTG group topology iff |G|?c.  相似文献
